The Huskies took the field in the Dempsey Indoor facility on Tuesday as they continued preparations for the 118th Apple Cup vs. Washington State as they will host their cross-state rivals on Sunday, September 6th, the day before Labor Day. It was a spirited two-and-a-half-hour practice that saw a handful of team periods and several players who were either out or limited previously participating in practice.Dawgman's Scott Eklund and Kim Grinolds were on hand and shared there thoughts starting with which players were back and participating fully, including cornebacker Dylan Robinson, linebacker Jacob Manu and defensive lineman Kai McClendon.They also discussed some of the big plays that took place, from Taariq Al-Uqdah's diving interception to some big plays that were turned in by the wideouts and tailbacks.Eklund and Grinolds also discussed the recent announcement by pretty much every major FBS conference, including the Big Ten and SEC, that they will not accept players who were on pro teams and in training camps who wish to re-enroll and play college football.

It was billed as a 'mock game' for the fans and definitely shorter than the guys anticipated in terms of total plays and there was a lot of situational work and special teams on display, but it wasn't exactly the easiest practice to follow because of what they were trying to get accomplished. In short, the ball moved around all over the place and didn't share much in common with the previous play in terms of down and distance.That said, they saw some strong performances on both sides of the ball, starting with Demond Williams on offense and Jacob Lane and Ramzak Fruean on defense. Williams unofficially threw for well over 200 yards on 15-18 passing and two touchdowns - one to Christian Moss and one to Baron Naone. First-year quarterback Derek Zammit threw the only other touchdown of the night, an 11-yard strike to first-year walk-on receiver Asa Thompson. With Jedd Fisch saying post-practice that all the players that have been previously held out of competitive situations will be fully ready to go starting Sunday, the guys talked about the depth at both quarterback and running back and how those rooms look right now.They also gave their props to the defensive effort on display, especially at the line of scrimmage and with Ksani Jiles' 40-yard pick six off Treston Kini McMillan.After 14 practices, the real preparations start toward Washington State tomorrow. Every player, minus CJ Christian and Jordan Washington , suited up and went through the pre-scrimmage warmup, but then that's when a number of them went to the east field to do individual workouts and conditioning drills.But when it came to the players that did stand out, there were a number on both sides of the ball. We started on the offensive side, and then moved over to the defense.We also got to see the punters for an extended period, and also got to see Tyler Robles go 2-3 on field goal attempts on the night.Near the end of the podcast, the guys talked about safety Rylon Dillard-Allen, the play that resulted in him getting bounced from a live period and then what UW Head Coach Jedd Fisch said about RDA after practice. The fifth-year defensive lineman is taking part because of the Colorado ruling allowing those players from 2022 that were grandfathered in to the five-for-five years of eligibility initially granted by the NCAA.While the NCAA is appealing the ruling from the Colorado court, it's assumed those eligible under that ruling would participate and play as long as they can until told otherwise. Uiagalelei still has a long ways to go in terms of getting up to speed because of all the time he missed preparing for the NFL Draft and life as a pro, but he already knows so much of what Ryan Walters and Jason Kaufusi expect that it shouldn't take him too long to get up to speed.When the competitive periods hit, it was clear which side of the ball was ready to go and which side is still feeling things out. Whether it was a stunning pick by freshman Jeron Jones in the corner of the end zone, a pick by another freshman - Ramzak Fruean - that he would have taken to the house, or just their play overall... the defense was heads and tails above the offense right now.With the exception of one receiver that came out and scored a couple touchdowns today in those same team periods. It's what we expected to see out of Christian Moss during spring ball before injury put him on the shelf. But he looks fully back and set to not just compete, but to win a starting job.At least one of the Dawgman guys thinks you can put the starting three receivers in ink; Dezmen Roebuck, Rashid Williams, and Christian Moss. They also discuss who the next three receiver would be after that.And Ryan Walters is going to have his hands full trying to figure out which linebackers he has to keep off the field. And could some of those linebackers end up actually working their way into some extra time in the slot just outside the box? One thing is for sure; with so many experienced players coming back, as well as athletic talent, Walters is going to have a lot of tough decisions to make moving forward.

There was a lot of work on position drills, as well as special teams drills. Kim and Scott talked at length about players that stood out to them on both sides of the ball. There was an emphasis on the secondary, including some thoughts on true frosh Jeron Jones and Rahsjon Duncan and also their early takes on a depth chart back there.After a quick ad break they talked about a new Husky that will definitely have better days than he had today. Freshman offensive lineman Ah Deong Yang was on the sidelines all practice today doing conditioning after going down with cramps yesterday. And as it fortuitously worked out for us, Zach Durfee was taken as the 7th Husky in the 7th round just moments before we were set to wrap up the podcast, so we were able to give our thoughts on that news too. To start, we talked about the general tone of the scrimmage, which went 130 plays according to UW Head Coach Jedd Fisch. We talked about the gulf in class between Demond Williams and the rest of the quarterbacks room. We talked about the running backs that continue to get turns and how that room will invariably change once Jayden Limar and Trey Cooley are cleared to play. We talked about how good it was to see Ohio State transfer Bodpegn Miller get some snaps during the scrimmage and also how some of the lesser-known pass-catchers, like Charlie Crowell, started to get some production. We talked about interceptions by Kayden Greene and freshman safety Gavin Day highlighting the play the defense.  We talked about the battle in the trenches, how it's been a blessing that no one has really gotten injured in there so far this spring, and how the rooms will definitely improve, especially when the DL gets former Mississippi State standout freshman Kai McClendon back. But mostly it was about how the defense is still a ways ahead of the offense, and also how the competition level has continued to rise and rise, leading to more scuffles and how the competition has pressurized things to where there's more breakdowns - like poor snaps, penalties, and the like. For one thing, it wasn't a very long practice. It went basically two hours as UW Head Coach Jedd Fisch cut things short right before we expected to see another team period to round things out. That may have been because of the ongoing NFL Draft and players and coaches wanting to watch some of their former teammates potentially get drafted. It was a beautiful Thursday at Husky Stadium as the Washington Huskies worked through their fifth day of spring football. Though it was a shells-and-shorts practice, the Huskies got a lot accomplished. And there was a lot to talk about now that UW is through a third of their spring practices.  Some of it was through the new players - the freshmen and transfers - clearly getting more comfortable with their roles and the routines that they've become accustomed to. And some of it was players just beyond the point where they've shaken off the rust and are now getting past the 'welcome back' phase of camp and have created a platform for themselves by which they can push on to the next level in their development. Some of them, like Quaid Carr, have been helped because the players that were expected to be around him aren't there. And others, like a trio of true freshmen in WR Jordan Clay, OL Kodi Greene, and DL Derek Colman-Brusa, have simply impressed by how quickly they've assimilated into the first teams and showed off their considerable talent. In what appeared to be an attempt to make up for some of the reps lost when Jordan Washington was hurt Saturday, Jedd Fisch took his Washington team back into Husky Stadium in full pads to not just finish what they started but also add a few more turns to the video vault. And in doing so they allowed a few players to tack on some own personal highlights, starting with sophomore defensive back Elias Johnson. The 6-foot-2 Johnson was all over the place during Tuesday's Day Four workout, knocking down passes, getting in the way of runs and generally causing headaches for his teammates on the offensive side of the ball. Running back Jordan Washington was taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons. As of the posting of this story he's conscious and moving all of his extremities.Based on the history of how UW Head Coach Jedd Fisch likes to run his Saturday practices, they were just getting into a long team scrimmage period that probably would have gone at least 50-60 plays. But even in the short amount of scrimmaging that we saw in the first day with full pads, we still saw plenty to talk about. The Washington Huskies were 21st in total defense and 15th in scoring defense last season. Could they be even better in 2026? There sure seems to be a lot of reasons to think so, starting right at the top with defensive coordinator Ryan Walters. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got together after day two of UW's spring football campaign, held Thursday afternoon in mixed conditions on the east field next to Husky Stadium, and hashed out all the good, bad, and ugly that they saw during the 150-minute practice. And the intermittent, spitting wind and rain didn't help things for the offense.  The good on that side of the ball came mostly from the receivers and tight ends, led by Rashid Williams, Chris Lawson, and Decker DeGraaf. It was a mixed day for quarterback Demond Williams and a less than stellar day for the centers, as Jake Flores and Parker Cross were deputized during the final team period due to the Hatchett brothers being unavailable at that time. But most of the talk was about the defense. From the big, stout defensive front to the experienced linebacking crew and a defensive backs room filled with youth and athleticism, there was a lot to talk about. Last week, Washington's coaching staff signed 25 players during the early signing period. In this podcast, Dawgman's Scott Eklund and Chris Fetters go through each of the 12 offensive prospects and the one specialist who signed and where they see each one fitting in once they arrive. They went through each position group and started things off by discussing Derek Zammit, a quarterback from New Jersey, who committed to the Huskies over offers from Alabama and Miami among others.  A big focus was the targets that Zammit will have to throw to including a three highly-rated wideouts in Mason James, Jordan Clay and Trez Davis as well as a wideout who emerged on the 7on camp circuit, Blaise LaVista. The Huskies were able to flip Clay (Baylor) and Davis (Tulane) late in the process and they talked about how all that played out. The offensive line got a lot of attention with five-star Kodi Greene leading the way. They also talked a lot about the running back class which featured four-star Valencia (Ca.) tailback Brian Bonner and three-star Oregon tailback Ansu Sanoe as well as the tight ends who saw a flip from Kekua Aumua from Florida as well as Sam Vyhlidal who came on during the spring and summer with great workouts in front of the Husky coaching staff. A big focus was the versatility of the defensive prospects including top in-state prospect Derek Colman-Brusa who could play almost anywhere along the defensive line next season. He is joined by another top in-state prospect in O'Dea's David Schwerzel who signed late on Wednesday with the Dawgs as well as top out-of-state targets Tufanua Ionatana Umu-Cais  and JD Hill and a developmental prospect like Ta'a Malu who is only in his second season of playing football. At linebacker the Huskies added two long, hard-hitting athletes at the position in Ramzak Fruean and Ezaya Tokio, each of whom is over 6'4" tall. In the secondary, much like the defensive line, the Huskies added five players, four of which could project at four different positions in the deep patrol. Elijah Durr, Jeron Jones and Ksani Jiles each look like they are fits at corner. Gavin Day, a hard-hitting safety from the state of Nevada, will be an in-the-box safety while Rahsjon Duncan is a swing player who could play both safety or corner and was called by national pundits/analysts the hardest hitting corner in class. There was so much to talk about as Washington took UCLA to the woodshed 48-14 in what might be the last league game ever played in the Rose Bowl. If you're a Washington fan, what a way to do it. It was a game that had so many crazy things happen, including the possibility that this game was the last league game ever at the Rose Bowl, playing on grass the first time this season, a handful of UCLA fumbles, two special teams touchdowns, Adam Mohammed running for over 100 yards, Demond Williams gaining more and more confidence as the game wore on, the defense absolutely showing up when they needed to, and so much more. And they did it all with a pretty banged up team, one that had a limited Jonah Coleman and Denzel Boston, and no Tacario Davis even though he warmed up before the game. But plenty of other players stepped up to handle their business. And the guys also tried to tackle the question a lot of UW fans were asking themselves after the game; should UW now be extending Fisch's contract?
