The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund - hashed out all the main talking points after the Washington Huskies defeated the No. 23 Illinois Fighting Illini Saturday afternoon at Husky Stadium. And just like the weather coming off Lake Washington, the UW fans in attendance got to see a little bit of everything. They saw the Huskies go 6-6 in the red zone with 6 touchdowns, they saw the Huskies penalized 30 yards on one play, they saw a double pass between their Big 3 - Demond Williams, Denzel Boston, and Jonah Coleman. They saw Boston get career highs for catches and yards. And most importantly, they were able to see the Huskies come home, wash the bitter taste of a 17-point defeat at Michigan, and cap it off with a dominant offensive display as UW now goes into their second bye week before heading to Wisconsin. The guys talked about the key plays and drives that allowed Washington to get ahead and even go back into the lead late in the first half after Illinois had bounced back to take their own lead. And then they hashed out all the different adjustments that were made on both sides of the ball, the takeaways, the almost takeaways, the penalties, and everything else that happened during a day where the weather seemed to show all four seasons within a span of a few hours. Things Discussed: OFFENSE Bryce Underwood had has best game yet. Throws down the middle of the field can beat ANYTHING. His RPO reads are on point. Chip is doing a great job with him. How do they keep finding these TEs? Michigan made a lot of young guy mistakes but also overcame them because they have kids who can step up. Max Bredeson for Heisman? PFF numbers on him don't capture what he does. The split stretch trap TD was a *READ* by Bredeson!!! Offensive philosophies: One school of thought (Lloyd, Harbaugh) is if you option you let the defense call the plays. Other school of thought (Chip, Malzahn) is take what they give you. Post-Gattis, M ran maybe three RPOs/season. Blake Frazier: Still not super strong but that agility is visible. Ryan Hayes as a RS Fr would have looked like this. In the break: Sam Webb's football career, Craig praises Seth/Brian, Seth says there are MSU guys who would do this sort of thing (e.g. Chris Vannini) if they had the fanbase to support it. Michigan fans want to KNOW more than they want to believe. DEFENSE USC gameplan vs the Washington gameplan. This was the Ohio State 2024 gameplan: play four against the run, 75% two-deep, lots of QQH, and invite the opponent to screw up. Will Howard, Demond Williams: these are college QBs. If you give them enough opportunities to make hard reads they'll screw up and throw it at a defender. This has gotta be hard for Wink because if you play this way against an NFL team you'll get shredded. Vanilla defense unlocked fast play from their linebackers. Yay Michigan went away from Bear fronts against 2 TEs on the field. This is hard for Wink, but he's not good at disguising fire blitzes, and believes he does. Got away with it at the Ravens because he had great man coverage defenders. He needs to use less of them to keep them effective. They still got taken advantage of on passing downs in this game. Edge defense: only one Barham went too high incident, which is VERY GOOD! Hutch would have games with 1 or 2 and I'd praise him to the heavens. Need to calibrate. M mixing more man into their coverages. Jordan Young out there at the end of the half—that kind of stuff has to stop. Young is young Rod Moore, but at this stage it's Rod against Washington in 2021 not Rod against OSU—Rod needed time to become the guy who could start against Ohio State.

The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds in Ann Arbor and Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund in Seattle - caught up postgame after Washington's 24-7 loss to Michigan, a game where anything that could have gone wrong for the Huskies did. And then when it seemed to go right, the nature of the brutal battle turned those tiny wins into Pyrrhic victories due to injuries. Three offensive players - starting left tackle Maximus McCree, starting tight end Quentin Moore, and backup tight end Kade Eldridge - all went down with first half injuries and Washington Head Coach Jedd Fisch said postgame that the prognosis for all three in terms of coming back to play soon wasn't good. In fact, McCree is now out for the year with a foot injury. The guys talked about how the injuries impacted a game that already had major injury concerns for both teams, how Michigan was able to pull the card UW used last year against the Wolverines by using second-half turnovers to go ahead and stay ahead on the scoreboard, the massive discrepancy in time of possession - especially in the fourth quarter - and more. They talked about the battle between Demond Williams and Bryce Underwood, how the battle in the trenches ultimately impacted the game for both young quarterbacks, and also Fisch taking responsibility for not getting his team prepared to finish the game the way they needed to. Washington has figured out a way to beat the teams they should. But what about the teams they could beat? That also is something the guys talked about in their final thoughts as the Huskies head back to Seattle licking their wounds and searching for answers as another tough opponent - Illinois - is set to travel to the Emerald City off a bye week. Oh, and Kim has a couple passes for Sunday's hoops exhibition game versus UNLV, so if you're interested send him an email: kimg@dawgman.com  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Lifted by another strong second half against Rutgers, the Washington Huskies will carry a 5-1 record into Ann Arbor to take on the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday. Ex-Interns Jack and Luke rehash Washington's win over the Scarlet Knights before turning their attention to this upcoming weekend. Topics of discussion include Washington's recent slow starts and the challenge of playing a 9 AM Pacific Time game. On the brighter side, they discuss the likelihood of Demond Williams continuing his impressive sophomore campaign against a Wolverine pass defense that has allowed teams like Nebraska, USC, and Oklahoma to move the ball through the air. Luke also looks to continue his dominant Betting B1G season, where he currently boasts a 12-6 picking record and a six-game lead over Jack. The duo also picks a couple of players on each side of the ball that they anticipate performing well against Sherrone Moore's Wolverines on Saturday. It was also the first road win of the Jedd Fisch era on Montlake and the first road win for Washington since their 2023 win in Corvallis over Oregon State. Among the topics discussed during the 40-minute game recap: - Kim's take on the atmosphere compared to other Apple Cups at Martin Stadium, and also how beer sales impacted the crowd (if at all).- The adjustments Washington made over the course of the game to eventually push past the pesky Cougars in the fourth quarter- The offensive efficiency, starting with Demond Williams and the fact that they didn't have to punt for a second-straight game.- The defensive issues against WSU's passing game and especially the struggles that both Leroy Bryant and Deven Bryant had.- The momentum gained by the two big fourth-quarter turnovers, starting with Alex McLaughlin's pick-six and Dylan Robinson's punchout the very next play.- John Mills' monster pancake block to spring Jonah Coleman for an early touchdown.- The continued impressive performance by the offensive line, especially with how they were able to overcome and adjust to all the early games WSU's defensive line threw at them.- Final thoughts as the Huskies look ahead to hosting the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes. We are witnessing a season to remember and the only proper way to celebrate it is to acknowledge Cal-O-Ween. The Mariners are playing good baseball, they aren't just winning on good pitching or high scoring offense, they're finding a way to do it all and if they can keep it up, they'll go far. Of course, the question remains, can they keep it up? No matter how well we've done over these last 10 games, we are still only a half game up on the Astros, so theirs is no room for error. :30- There's been a lot of chatter about the play of Demond Williams Jr and Jonah Coleman, but is it too early to start hyping up postseason awards for the Dawgs? The real test is still a week and a half away against Ohio State. :45- We close out this humpday with one last thing! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Washington Huskies decimated UC Davis 70-10, and the guys from Dawgman.com - Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund - broke down all the positives they saw. And there were a lot of them. To start, the Huskies got off to a hot start, scoring the five times they had the ball in the first half, amassing a 42-10 halftime edge. They were also able to get a pick from Tacario Davis and should have had another one from their other 6-4 corner, Ephesians Prysock. But there were still some sloppy penalties and execution issues that kept the Huskies from shutting down the Aggies completely. Chris and Scott talked about their favorite players of the game, starting with Jonah Coleman and his four first-half touchdowns (five overall!), as well as how rock-solid Demond Williams was with his decision-making all night long. Then they turned to the defense to talk about their difference-makers. They also went through all the true freshmen that have played so far this season. There's 10 in all, including four that made their UW debuts tonight; Chris Lawson, Champ Taulealea, Ramonz Adams, and D'Aryhian Clemons. And they also gave their final thoughts on the game and especially how it plays into how the Huskies will work during their BYE week leading into their Apple Cup game in Pullman in two weeks' time. The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - broke down their Colorado State thoughts after further review and also offered up their insights into the main things to watch tonight as the Washington Huskies square off with top-5 FCS foe, the UC Davis Aggies. They go through a thorough recap of what they saw on tape in Washington's 38-21 win over the Rams, starting with quarterback Demond Williams, then the OL, TE, WR, and finally the running backs. After a quick break they turn the tables and talk about the defense and what they hope to see in terms of area of improvement from game one to game two. And Kim asks the guys; who do they expect to be Washington's leading rusher, receiver, and tackler? Scott offers up a quick recruiting update in terms of players expected to be at Husky Stadium tonight (hint: it's mostly going to be 2027 and 2028 prospects), and they also talk about the recent hoops offer to top TE prospect Tytan McNeal from Eastside Catholic. Now having been offered by the Huskies for both football and basketball, which sport is likely going to be his best at the next level. The guys finish up the pregame podcast with their final thoughts, including the fact that the Aggies will be playing in front of a Husky Stadium crowd that will roughly be 15 times the size the one they just saw in their road win at Utah Tech. Training camp is winding down, and game week is almost here (with Week Zero kicking off Saturday!). That means it's time for a recap from the road.On the latest episode of Y-Option, presented by our founding partner 76 — keeping you on the GO GO GO so you never miss a beat — Jim Thornby and I sit down to unpack everything learned while traveling coast to coast. What stood out:* Penn State: The Nittany Lions have earned the right to be in the national title conversation. I'm a big believer in Drew Allar, as QBs need scars and every Penn State fan knows he has them. I think his maturity and work off the field will lead him to his most successful season in Happy Valley and I would bet in January he will say he played with the most joy in his young career. * Oregon: Despite losing a ton of production, their competitive depth is elite. Dante Moore (not yet named the starter) looked like one of the most impressive QBs I've seen in years. His ability to layer the ball, locate his wideouts and throw a catchable ball is as good as I've seen on the tour. * The Midwest stops: Illinois (my CFP sleeper), Wisconsin, and Iowa. Three places I'd never been to and each visit revealed growth and momentum. Walking away, my takeaway was simple: everybody has gotten better from a year ago. Another takeaway, Bret Bielema is one of the nation's most underrated head coaches. His experience as a head coach, an assistant with the Patriots & more has tangible depth to it and will only help this team if they can get through September undefeated. I think his team will be one of the biggest storylines of the season.* Back West: Our tour out West began in Eugene and then headed north to Seattle to see Jedd Fisch's team in his second year. Demond Williams, Jonah Coleman, Denzel Boston are all stars. With an improved OL this group is going to give teams fits. Add in two 6'4'' corners and UW will be a must see team this fall. We concluded in LA for some Big Ten Network crew fellowship and after watching DeShaun Foster's Bruins and Lincoln Riley's Trojans one thing is certain–the West Coast schools all look like B1G programs on the offensive and defensive lines. * Overall: the best part of the tour was time with my colleagues. Gerry DiNardo, Kyle Coughlin, Ashley Adamson and all of our Big Ten Network colleagues - it was an absolute blast and we made sure to make the most of it. And our Coach found himself with more slips than he knows what to do with!In addition, we dive into Cal naming a starting QB, Utah's opinions on public injury reports, Stanford in Week Zero and the Cougs and Beavs. Overall, this episode is a full rundown of training camp takeaways, the storylines that matter most, and what's ahead as the season kicks off.So with that, let's get after it!!
