Have you ever been in a situation where someone wants something from you, but they won't come out and ask for it? They'll hint at it, tip toe around the issue, or just hope you figure it out based on the look they give you. My kids do that all the time. A common problem I hear among podcasters is “no one shares the show/leaves reviews/sends in feedback.” I always ask the same follow up: “Are you asking for it?” It's the same lesson I give my kids. Don't ask don't get. That's why today, we're going to look at the best way to ask (and enable) your audience for feedback. Want more content like this?  The best way to do it is to subscribe to my free newsletter over at https://podcastworkflows.com/join Top Takeaways: Ask early. That's early in the episode, and earlier than you need the feedback. You want to maximize the amount of times your audience hears the ask so they take action. Ask often. Repeat your ask multiple times throughout an episode. It might feel like too much, but trust me, it's not. Ask everywhere. Don't just ask on your podcast. Play Episode Listen Later Jun 20, 2024 28:30

In the final episode of season 21, the Developer podcast hosts Michael and Rob reflect on the lessons they've learned about becoming better developers over the past few months. Listen to Rob and Michael recap Season 21, Discussing Lessons Learned and Becoming Better Developers. Here are some of the key takeaways on Becoming Better Developers: Invest Time in Working ON Your Business, Not Just IN It One of Rob's main realizations was that he spent too much time on client projects. He was not taking enough time to improve and market his consulting business. To address this, Rob instituted a weekly "business development" time. During this period, he would step away from client work and focus on branding, automation tools, marketing strategies, and other efforts. The goal was to grow his business, not just execute client projects. Refocus and Redefine Your Brand For Michael, the past season involved a lot of rebranding, soul-searching, and really defining who his core customer is and what services he wants to focus on providing. He pruned out the consulting work that didn't align with his new vision to build a more focused brand around his new Envision QA product line. Get Organized Along with redefining his brand, Michael had to get organized—going through old code repositories, archiving obsolete projects, and separating out components for his new products. This provided clarity on what assets were still relevant moving forward. Keep Learning and Staying Current Both Michael and Rob emphasized the importance of continuously learning and keeping your skills up-to-date in order to stay relevant and marketable. Michael cited examples of getting re-certified, learning new languages and frameworks, and studying emerging areas like cloud and AI. Periodically Try Something New Rob advised trying new things periodically. This could be a new programming language, new tools, or revisiting an old area you hadn't practiced recently. Trying new things helps keep you out of ruts. It can also reignite your passion for areas you drifted away from over the years. Do What You Enjoy A recurring theme was the importance of finding enjoyable work. The work should energize you rather than drain you. Rob said, "We are not serving ourselves, our customers, or our families if we're not doing stuff we enjoy." He added, "That's what we're going to do best." Doing work you enjoy was emphasized as crucial. Reflect on Progress The hosts recommended periodic reflection. Look back at where you were six months or a year ago. Appreciate the progress you've made. Evaluate areas with less progress. Refocus your efforts in those areas. Celebrate your wins. But don't settle for where you are now. Get Feedback, Make Adjustments Finally, they advocated proactively getting feedback - whether from a manager, customers, or just self-evaluating strengths and weaknesses. Use that feedback to make adjustments, invest in training to shore up weaknesses, and optimize your strengths. Consistently re-calibrating based on feedback is key. A final thought on becoming better developers The main message? Consistent self-reflection, redefining priorities, continuous learning, and aligning your work with your skills and passions are crucial to purposefully growing as a developer over the long run. With intentionality and wisdom, the journey to becoming better developers can be an ever-rewarding one. Get and Give Feedback Surveys from Lowe's to just about everywhere online Why? Because it's so important to not just work efficiently but to make sure you're pursuing the right objective and in the right manner I manage projects and critical aspect of my job is defining early and accurately what my customer or stakeholder needs and wants as project deliverables Making assumptions or rushing to the execution phase are two big errors which lead to poor results and damaged business relationships On this topic I recommend recent episode of the Emotionally Healthy Podcast called The Life Changing Skill of Clarifying expectations” This is what emotionally mature individuals do, and one of the axioms on that podcast is that you can't be spiritually mature unless you're emotionally mature Asking for feedback Talking too loud Too harsh in a meeting Give feedback (solicited and unsolicited) I've worked where we receive emails from managers asking me to give feedback to their direct reports soon after working with them.  I try to always give that feedback and to make it meaningful not just vanilla and predictable How is very important " Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up." - James 4:10 "Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, But he who hates correction is stupid." - Proverbs 12:1 So provide feedback through surveys when you can as a gift to others, but also seek feedback about yourself and never be afraid to face the music of truth when it comes to our behavior and how our behavior is received by others.

You know the kind of testimony you read - either as a consumer or as the recipient - that just makes you go YES! That's exactly what I wanted to hear! (the power of social proof!) This can be the norm for your business if you help your clients out. YES, the way in which you ask for testimonies absolutely shapes the type of testimony you receive. We want testimonies that do a few things: Meet the prospect where they are via the completed client taking them back to the beginning. Demonstrate CLEARLY the aha, takeaway, win, result etc. I am careful using the word “promise” here due to us not LEGALLY being able to promise an outcome. Generally is CONCISE. Authentic WE have to ask the RIGHT questions to get all of this. I am the queen of recieving long-winded testimonies - which are great for ME, but not for someone reading my sales page and wanting to get the bullet point takeaways from my services.  With that…  I find it interesting that a lot of coaches I work with and speak to find it awkward or strange to ask for feedback and testimonies from their clients. OR only use screenshots as testimonies and never get a formal testimony! WHAAAATTT ARE YOU DOING?! There is so much more praise left on the table. And possibly great marketing material. Today we're going to go over different types of testimonies that you might receive in the online health and fitness space, how to use them; but more importantly, how to help clients give you the highest quality testimony that you are looking for from a marketing standpoint.  The power of social proof Low pressure marketing Confidence for YOU & PROSPECT When you have testimonies from clients, backing up your coaching approach, that gives you confidence in marketing your services.  It can also provide confidence in prospects to invest their money with you. … Your motive vs a client's motive is not the same. The prospect knows that. Unless a current or past client is in an affiliate program of some kind, and they're getting a kickback, most social proof is not from someone who is trying to sell you something.  It's from someone sharing their genuine experience, and likely some kind of transformation that they had in working with you.  There are no strings attached for this person.  And that's why social proof is so vital for a brand.  Because it can do a fair amount of the selling for you.  Or at least affirm the rest of your marketing.  … Other people have trusted your process and had success with it. And now potential prospects know that. Not because YOU told them, but because your clients did. GAIN CREDIBILITY through “social PROOF” - YOU HAVE BACKING NOW. You've gained credibility because people say that what you do works. And they're using their own words to do that. This is a massive reason people and brands will BETA test before launching something. Not only to improve the service or offer but to GET FEEDBACK that backs their marketing from consumers. Let's look at different types of social proof that you might receive as an online health and fitness professional.  THREE TYPES OF SOCIAL PROOF: Screenshots, Written testimonies, photos/video Especially in the digital era, this can come in the medium of screenshots from a training app and successes that the client has had, or from a communication app like Voxer or slack. Get legal approval - form, asking, make it anonymous, put it in your terms when they join. It can be built into your terms that they agree to when signing a contract, or joining your program. And there are also more specific client testimony release contracts, and forms that can be implemented into your business.  Back to the screenshots. Just because something is a screenshot does not mean that it's a “low quality” testimony.  SUPER POWER OF SCREENSHOTS = ORGANIC in real time of the process If you can get an organic screenshot of someone sharing their succ...

More About Ryan Ermeling:There are a lot of coaches and consultants for Christian organizations out there. Here's what makes me different from almost every single one of them:I'm not a Christian educator, pastor or church worker. I'm an entrepreneur.Over the course of 15 years, I transformed a garage start-up into the largest video streaming provider in collegiate athletics. Stretch Internet worked with nearly 600 schools, experienced double-digit growth in 14 out of 15 years and was named to the Inc. 5000 list as one of the fastest growing privately held companies in America. But in 2018, God put a new calling on my heart, and I sold my business to a global capital venture firm so I could devote time to that new pursuit. Now, through my Seven Marches consultancy, I translate business concepts into tools (like www.parentpulse.com and www.measure.church) that help churches, Christian schools, missional non-profits and Christian business leaders. I pull practical insights from my 15 years as a CEO. I utilize principles from Disney and Amazon and Intel. I infuse ideas from authors like Daniel Pink and Chip and Dan Heath. I help leaders tap into the wisdom and real-world experience of leaders like Ed Catmull (former Pixar CEO), Marc Randolph (co-founder of Netflix) and Bob Iger (Disney CEO).Innovation happens at the intersection of diverse ideas and concepts – like business and ministry.
