A career in surgery has a profound impact on those who practice the craft. High rates of poor mental health are well described but incompletely understood. One potential mechanism for advancing our understanding of surgeon well-being is studying surgeons' emotional experiences. Shame, a self-conscious emotion reflecting how an individual feels about themselves, could be a particularly powerful lens. In this series on shame in surgery, we explore what we know about shame in surgery and what shame can tell us about learning and working as surgeons. In this second episode, we talk with Dr. ElAbd and Dr. Zammit about their study examining the relationship between shame-based learning, grit, and burnout across surgical specialties. In an episode where they've never needed his bullshit X-Men knowledge more, Zammit's out sick. But never fear true believer as he's been replaced by our good friend Darcy Smith from Studio Folly! Who knows NOTHING about X-Men. He didn't even know Wolverine aka Logan aka James Howlett bones were coated in adamantium. You all better come for him in the comments. They didn't even mention the time after Wolverine got the adamantium ripped from his bones where he turned into a full on cave man, wore a bandana and had no nose. Nor do the mention the time of how he got his adamantium back. You see, at the time, and unbeknownst to the rest of the X-Men, Apocalypse had kidnapped (man-napped? mutant-napped?) Wolverine and pitted him up against Sabretooth (who had been enhanced with adamantium from the arms of the evil mutant Cyber (he had arms coated in adamantium)) to see who would become Death (one of the Horsemen of Apocalypse). Wolverine defeated Sabretooth believing that only bad would come out of Sabretooth becoming Death and so Apocalypse sucked off the adamantium from Sabretooth to give to Wolverine. Even his teeth were adamantium at this point, but that didn't last. He was then made to attack the X-Men and he was all wrapped up in a red headscarf thing and wielded a big scimitar for reasons that are unclear. Probably to hide the fact that no one was supposed to know he was Wolverine as there was another Wolverine on the team, but not like his clone or his son or his clone of a clone, this one was a Skrull (one of those shapeshifting aliens) who was pretending to be Wolverine for some reason that escapes me. Did Apocalypse put him on the team or was that just a sweet coincidence? This was during Apocalypse: The Twelve storyline, which was something that was teased for so long in the comics but ended up being just a terrible mess where Apocalypse wanted to get sucked off into the body of Nate Grey (an alternate reality and all powerful son of Jean Grey and Scott Summers who was kicking it sweet in the 616 universe who later went on to become a mutant shaman, then become a bit of everyone, then he made an alternate reality where sex was forbidden which makes sense as he was tricked by an evil Madelyne Pryor from a different alternate dimension to have sex, which is weird as Madelyne is a clone of Jean Grey, his mum) but Scott Summers pushed him out the way and took his spot, so Apocalypse ended up sucking off Cyclops and then they merged into one guy and then choofed off for a bit to finally come back to cheat on his wife. Last week, Washington's coaching staff signed 25 players during the early signing period. In this podcast, Dawgman's Scott Eklund and Chris Fetters go through each of the 12 offensive prospects and the one specialist who signed and where they see each one fitting in once they arrive. They went through each position group and started things off by discussing Derek Zammit, a quarterback from New Jersey, who committed to the Huskies over offers from Alabama and Miami among others.  A big focus was the targets that Zammit will have to throw to including a three highly-rated wideouts in Mason James, Jordan Clay and Trez Davis as well as a wideout who emerged on the 7on camp circuit, Blaise LaVista. The Huskies were able to flip Clay (Baylor) and Davis (Tulane) late in the process and they talked about how all that played out. The offensive line got a lot of attention with five-star Kodi Greene leading the way. They also talked a lot about the running back class which featured four-star Valencia (Ca.) tailback Brian Bonner and three-star Oregon tailback Ansu Sanoe as well as the tight ends who saw a flip from Kekua Aumua from Florida as well as Sam Vyhlidal who came on during the spring and summer with great workouts in front of the Husky coaching staff. The guys from Dawgman.com - Scott Eklund and Chris Fetters - got together to offer their thoughts after Day 7 of UW spring football. It was a day for the purists as the Huskies went through a 2.5 hour practice under beautiful Seattle spring skies. There wasn't much to chew on from a fan's perspective as there was a ton of individual work and installation on both the offensive and defensive sides, but the team saved their best work for the last half hour of practice. It was there where they went through a two-minute drill for the both the first and second teams, and the offense was able to score both times. Scott and Chris talk about what they saw during those two-minute drills, including standouts on both sides of the line of scrimmage. For the offense it was freshman receiver Chris Lawson, and for the defense it was defensive backs Rahshawn Clark and Caleb Presley. After a quick break the talk turns to the offense, specifically the offensive line and how they lined up today. There were a few tweaks to the basic lineup Michael Switzer has been using for his number and number two lines, and two true freshmen - John Mills and Champ Taulealea - featured in those tweaks. To finish the podcast out, Scott breaks down the news that 247Sports entered in a couple of crystal balls for Washington earlier Tuesday. In the movie Deadpool and Wolverine they say that their Wolverine is the worst Wolverine because he got drunk once at the wrong time. The Plumbing Boys find that unsatisfactory. Zammit imagines a Wolvie who kept his chauffer license and loves his job, Jackson creates the greatest Plumbing riff of all time, and Duscher performs many incredible one man plays to the delight and frustration of his two friends.
