The Other Side Of The Bell - A Trumpet Podcast

This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring trumpet performer, composer and sound designer Tim Larkin, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Tim Larkin trumpet interview"   About Tim Larkin: Tim Larkin is a composer, trumpet player, and sound designer whose work spans decades across the gaming, jazz, and film industries. His credits include Portal, Dota 2, Team Fortress 2, and HBO's The Rat Pack, with past live performances alongside legends like Ella Fitzgerald, Sheila E., and Huey Lewis. Tim won an Academy Award creating sound design for Best Animated Short at the 75th Academy Awards for his work on The ChubbChubbs! Setting Standards is his long-awaited debut jazz album, and was released on August 1, 2025 on all major platforms. The album is a curated collection of reimagined classics and one original composition that captures the emotional breadth, musical depth, and cinematic storytelling that have defined Larkin's career across jazz, film, and video games. Setting Standards includes interpretations of songs by Bobby Caldwell, David Foster, Jimmy Webb, and more anchored by his own original composition, “Gumshoes.” “This album isn't about chasing trends,” says Larkin. “It's about honoring the songs that stuck with me and reimagining them in a way that feels honest keeping the soul intact but letting them breathe in a new space.” Setting Standards blends cinematic jazz, soulful arrangements, and live instrumentation into a cohesive listening experience that's both nostalgic and forward thinking. With contributions from longtime collaborators including John Paris (Earth, Wind & Fire) and renowned arrangers Maurizio Metalli, Lennie Moore and Joris Hoogsteder, the album is a modern take on the classic jazz experience.   Episode Links: Tim Larkin profile on IMDB Setting Standards streaming links Video of Tim conducting the orchestra at the Dota 2 International Championships in 2023, at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle The Dota 2 2025 International Grand Championships Opening Ceremony   Upcoming Events: Virtuosity Musical Instruments Boston, October 17 & 18 Greg Black Mouthpieces, November 7 & 8 North Carolina Music Educators Association Conference, November 9 & 10   Podcast Credits: “A Room with a View“ - composed and performed by Howie Shear Podcast Host - John Snell Cover Photo Credit - Tim Larkin Audio Engineer - Ted Cragg

We recap the concert and pay tribute to the group’s decades-long legacy. “Wu-Tang Clan is our generation’s equivalent of the Beatles — it’s not even close,” Martin asserts in the conversation. “They basically created an entirely new style out of an existing form of music. We've discovered a time-warp. The Mariners win in Minnesota, despite Luis Castillo blowing a 5-run lead in the 4th. Luckily, the bullpen stepped up and the M's were able to do some of the little things to get the winning run in the 9th and walk away with a 6-5 W. We saw Munoz in the 8th and Brash in the 9th and Dan Wilson didn't have us questioning his moves. It felt like a good fundamental win. :30- Mariners Morning After The Mariners squeaked out a 6-5 win and it was a Julio sac fly that won it for the M's, his second of the game and the season… and thus “Sac Watch” has begun. :45- Caitlin Clark was in town last night as the Storm fell to the Fever in front of a sellout home crowd. TOD LEIWEKE Tod is a remarkable human being, full stop. His journey's genesis is rooted in very humble beginnings in one of the poorest counties in Missouri, punctuated by two tragedies, to becoming one of the most prolific sports executives in the United States over the last four decades. He  is currently part-owner, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Seattle Kraken and was instrumental in building the world's first carbon neutral stadiums and a beloved institution in the city, Climate Pledge Arena. Before his current roles, he served as NFL as Chief Operating Officer running day-to-day operations of the league including football operations, media, marketing, NFL International, communications and social responsibility. Prior to rejoining the NFL, Tod  was Chief Executive Officer of Tampa Bay Sports and Entertainment, which included the Tampa Bay Lightning and Amalie Arena and in his last season the team was a Stanley Cup Finalist accentuating a remarkable turnaround of the franchise.   Prior to joining the Lightning, Tod served as CEO of the Seattle Seahawks (NFL) and Vulcan Sports & Entertainment for seven years. During his tenure in Seattle he revived the Seahawks 12th Man brand, and assisted in building one of the NFL's finest 200,000sf waterfront practice facilities including access for fans to attend training camp. Concurrently he  also provided oversight of the Portland Trail Blazers (NBA) as acting President. Tod also served as first ever team President of the Seattle Sounders FC (MLS) helping set in motion the team that is now regarded as one of the model franchises in Major League Soccer then averaging over 40,000 fans per match. He is part-owner of the Sounders FC.   Preceding this, Tod was President of the Minnesota Wild and Minnesota Sports & Entertainment. This is a very special episode that we have for you this week, because for the first time in six years, Pearl Jam finally returned home to play a show in Seattle. Not only that, but it was both Randy and Javier's first time witnessing a show in their hometown. It was a week of celebration as the city featured so many fun events in connection with the band, and what made it memorable on our part is that we had such a great group of friends to experience it with. From visiting Seattle grunge landmarks, to signing massive flags and pre-gaming at local bars, this is one of our favorite traveling experiences. Which is why we have invited our group of friends who all stayed together at a BNB in striking distance to Climate Pledge Arena on this episode to talk about how meaningful it was to all of us. While the six person conversation will certainly take up a healthy chunk of the episode, we will dig deep into this awesome show from last year. There are special moments featured here that a year later we look back on very fondly. The last five songs in the main set - Upper Hand, Waiting For Stevie, Man Of The Hour, Satan's Bed and Rearviewmirror displayed perhaps one of the best set runs that Pearl Jam had in all of 2024. We'll spend a lot of time on Man Of The Hour, which was already a highly emotional moment due to the tribute to the late Bill Walton, but was also incredibly important to the hosts from this night. While the end of the main set was killer, the end of the encore has tons of talking points as well with a modified rendition of All Along The Watchtower, the first appearance of Yellow Wing (a mashup of Ledbetter and Little Wing) as well as one of the final times to date that Setting Sun has closed a show. For all of you old school Live On 4 Legs fans, this will take you back to older episodes as the total run time on this exceeds two hours, but there's no lack of stories and celebration for a show that certainly deserves it's flowers!
