1 Corinthians 1:1-9
Moundsville Baptist Church
"I thank my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given you in Christ Jesus, that in everything you were enriched in Him, in all speech and all knowledge, even as the testimony concerning Christ was confirmed in you, so that you are not lacking in any gift, awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord." [1 Corinthians 1:4-9]
Today, we start a new study looking at Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian congregation. This was a congregation built out of new converts, ignorant of many of the right and good practices of God before Paul came, and slow to move in the right direction at times. They were split into factions, had immoral sexual practices, seeking honor and power in the world. Yet Paul is so certain of their right standing in the Lord. Why is this so? Let us take a look at his argument throughout this book today.

On this third Sunday in Epiphany - this season of light and revelation - we read the story of John the Baptist suddenly recognizing his cousin Jesus for who he really is and cries, "Behold, the Lamb of God." And John's final request to us is simple: tell the truth.
Problem Solving Process: 1. Identify the problems by asking - What exactly has gone wrong? What are the before and after differences? 2. Prioritize the problems 3. Define the problems ----------------- Grace cannot coexist with Guilt, Human obligation, and human goodness

What images stir in your mind when you hear the word "saints"? A football team? Religious iconography? A jazz band playing, "Oh When the Saints"? This week we continue our month-long series, "Who Are You?" contemplating what it means to say that we are saints. It's both a key statement of who we are and lofty vision for who we're supposed to be.

We cannot know the "Peace" of God until we first understand the "Grace" of God.
Despite all the problems the church has, Paul is still thankful for the church. Paul is still committed to helping this church. Paul understood that the perfect church was a myth and chose to be thankful and committed to the church while working to improve the church. When you look through this passage and see all that Paul is thankful for in this church, you can't help but notice a repeated theme. There is grace given by Jesus. They had been enriched by Jesus. They were hoping in Jesus. They were called to Jesus. Paul was thankful for the church because of Jesus work in the church. This is why we can be thankful for the church as well. We are thankful for the church because of Jesus' work in the church. This passage shows us four ways Jesus has worked in the church that make us thankful for the church.

Since Christians are definitively and progressively holy, we should celebrate the holiness of God's church.

We've all made a bad first impression at least once in our life. The beginning of Paul's writtings have given many in our society a bad impression of Paul. Can the Lutheran understanding of baptism and what comes at the end of Paul's letter help us move beyond first impressions? How is the way God does it different then how we can do it?
Any relationship needs a good foundation. Today we take a look at our relationship with Christ and the foundation that God has provided for it.

Who are we in Christ? How did you/we get here? Where are you/we going?
There are many misconceptions about what church is and what church must be. There are equally as many misconceptions about its roles and importance in the lives of people. These types of misconceptions often make church look bad, boring, or unimportant. This shouldn’t be the case. This is a sermon series about church – what God commands of it and how you should participate.
