Have you ever been caught in a conversation where you felt unheard or misunderstood? On this episode of the Do Good to Lead Well podcast, I'm exploring the transformative power of effective listening. With insights from Stephen Covey's timeless principle of seeking first to understand, and a revealing study from Zenger Folkman in Harvard Business Review, I uncover the real markers of great listening. It's not just about nodding silently; it's about engaging mindfully, channeling curiosity through thoughtful questions. These skills help us navigate today's polarized landscape and build bridges where there were none.Active listening is more than a skill; it's an art that can mend divides and strengthen connections. Drawing from my own experiences, I share how misplaced advice during an enthusiastic travel story highlighted the pitfalls of assuming rather than understanding. Empathy and emotional intelligence are key, especially in a tech-driven world where face-to-face interactions are rare. By being present, asking the right questions, and truly listening, we can foster more meaningful relationships and learn from disagreements. Tune in to this episode and discover how great listening can lead to a brighter, more connected future. What You'll Learn- Why listening is a crucial skill in our personal and professional lives.- Common misconceptions about effective listening.- Is being silent sufficient to demonstrate great listening?- It's all about timing when it comes to giving advice.Podcast Timestamps(00:00) – Why Listening is a (Leadership) Superpower(02:52) – Key Behaviors of Great Listening(15:47) – A Personal Example(19:11) – A Final ThoughtKEYWORDSPositive Leadership, Active Listening, Communication Skills, Empathy, Emotional Intelligence, Effective Communication, Seek First to Understand, Asking Questions, Building Relationships, The Power of Curiosity, Navigating Disagreements, Unsolicited Advice, Polarized World, Open Dialogue, CEO Success
You've been told to “speak your truth.” But what if that truth-telling… is actually pushing people away? In this fiery mini-sode, I'm unpacking the energetics and trauma patterns behind unsolicited advice, oversharing, and feeling the need to "educate" someone we don't agree with—and how it's not always as loving or helpful as we think it is. INSIDE THE EPISODE:
Have you ever given or received advice, only to realise it didn't land the way you hoped? This week I explore the common (and sometimes uncomfortable) experience of unsolicited advice—when someone offers suggestions or solutions without being asked. I reflect on how this type of advice, even when well-intentioned, can feel dismissive, create disconnection, and even lead to codependency. Support doesn't always mean solving. Sometimes, the most powerful thing we can offer is our full, caring attention. In this episode you will learn: Why unsolicited advice can feel invalidating or emotionally disconnecting What some of the internal motivators are behind giving advice The importance of presence and co-regulation over rushing to fix someone's feelings Helpful alternatives to unsolicited advice Reflective journal prompts to consider - How do you feel when someone gives you unsolicited advice? Have you ever gotten advice that made you question your whole life choices? This week, we're unpacking unsolicited advice, the kind no one asked for, yet somehow shows up. From the well-meaning auntie with a PhD in your personal life to the friend who's projecting more than supporting, we're asking: when does guidance turn into control? We're sharing the story times that made us rethink our boundaries, breaking down why it stings, and getting into how to give advice without sounding accidentally condescending. Let's talk passive aggression, people-pleasing, and why “you should…” is usually where we check out.All this and more in this week's episode!
Don't we all love unsolicited advice? No?! Obviously, I jest. Of course we don't, especially when fighting for your life. In this relatively brief podcast I discuss my interaction with such unsolicited benevolence (as the giver surely must feel that's what it is). In short, Sweet Brown said it best: Ain't nobody got time for that!
What if the people who drain your energy aren't the problem—but your reaction to them is? In this episode, Michael and Christian take a closer look at the concept of “energy vampires” and what really makes certain interactions feel exhausting. They explore how our attention, expectations, and values shape our experience of others—and how much of what we perceive as draining comes from within. You'll learn how to manage your focus more intentionally, recognize when misalignment is the real issue, and lead with more empathy and clarity. If you want to protect your energy and strengthen your leadership presence, this episode offers powerful insight.
In this soulful and unfiltered conversation, I'm joined by my dear friends Elizabeth DiAlto and Elisha Tichelle, co-hosts of the Mystical Aunties podcast. Together, we dive into the deep waters of boundaries, power, projection, and the energetic transformation of perimenopause. We talk about what it means to be a mystical auntie, how to navigate judgment and unsolicited advice with grace, and the sacred process of untangling from identities built around doing and productivity. Elizabeth brings her fierce and tender wisdom as a sacred embodiment teacher, while Elisha shares her powerful presence as an oracle and somatic guide. There's depth, there's laughter, and there's truth. This is a conversation for anyone moving through change, reclaiming their power, and remembering who they truly are. The university is uniquely Catholic in its origin, and yet currently, higher level education on elite campuses is a “red-hot mess,” according to George Weigel. In this episode, Andrew Petiprin sits down with George Weigel to discuss academia and the intellectual life, not simply as a theoretical enterprise left for those who dwell in an ivory tower, but as driver of culture and social life. They discuss the role of the Church in academia, the scholarly legacy of Pope St. John Paul II, the importance fighting the culture war, and the troubles facing the Western civilization. These topics are also the focus of Weigel's most recent book “Pomp, Circumstance, and Unsolicited Advice: Commencement Addresses and University Lectures,” where he tells students that true academic learning is carrying on the great Catholic tradition. This week, I'm heading back to San Francisco's Chinatown for another delightfully chaotic mystery with our favourite sixty-something sleuth, Vera Wong. In Jesse Sutanto's latest novel, Vera Wong's Guide to Snooping on a Dead Man, the tea shop is still bustling, but what Vera's craving is just a little more excitement in her now much fuller life. When she encounters a young girl outside the police precinct, Vera senses a mystery in need of an answer, and she's back on the case! A locked briefcase, a viral social media moment, and a trail of secrets are far too much for the calming effects of a cup of her chrysanthemum tea.In this episode, I share my spoiler-free thoughts on this cosy, yet surprisingly dark sequel. I talk about why Vera continues to be such a compelling character and how this book explores found family and identity in the digital age.Whether you loved the first Vera Wong book or you're just dipping your toes into the world of cosy crime and cosy mysteries, this one has humour, heart, high-stakes sleuthing, and a grandmother who's got more guts than your average gumshoe. So, pop the kettle on, settle in, and let's chat all things books. In today's episode, I'm talking about the darkly comedic That'll Teach Her by Maz Evans, a murder mystery set in a primary school. The story kicks off with the sudden death of the headmistress, Claudia Stitchwell, with the official reason given being an allergic reaction to nuts in a chocolate cake... But some of the parents aren't buying it, so they turn to their school WhatsApp group to start putting the pieces together and figure out what really happened, uncovering a lot of secrets that would have been better staying buried along the way.The book is told in a really fun way, using WhatsApp chats, chat boards, school newsletters, and police reports, all of which give it a unique twist. Want to know if this book is for you? When an organization lays people off , those who remain are often left scrambling to find their footing – and hold other people up – in an environment that no longer feels stable. Send us a textIn this episode, I talk about my journey of personal growth, sharing the ups and downs of dealing with unsolicited advice, judgment, and how we see ourselves. Life has a way of throwing challenges our way, but I've learned that these moments often hold the biggest lessons if we're willing to embrace them.Let's be real—unsolicited advice can be annoying. But I've come to realize that it usually says more about the person giving it than it does about me. Judgment? Oh, that's often just a reflection of someone else's insecurities or shame. And when it comes to how we view others, it's usually shaped by what's going on inside us.One of the things that helps me stay grounded is starting the day with prayer and mindfulness. It sets a positive tone and reminds me to stay open to life's lessons—even the hard ones. Speaking of hard lessons, criticism used to sting, but now I see it as an opportunity to grow. Approaching feedback with an open mind has been a game-changer.Asking for help? That used to be tough for me. I thought it made me weak. But guess what? It's a sign of strength. We're not meant to do life alone—everyone has their own journey, and we all deserve support along the way.One of my biggest takeaways is this: life is about the journey, not just the destination. Embracing vulnerability has deepened my connections with others and strengthened my sense of self. Self-acceptance is key to finding true happiness. Takeaways from this episode:Unsolicited advice often reflects the giver's perspective.Judgment from others can stem from their insecurities and shame. How we perceive others is influenced by our internal state.Prayer and mindfulness can set a positive tone for the day.Criticism can be a tool for growth if approached with an open mind.Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.Everyone has a unique journey and deserves support.Life is about the journey, not just the destination.Embracing vulnerability can lead to deeper connections.Self-acceptance is crucial for personal growth and happiness.Be sure to connect with Conversations with Bizzy! Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values
With the 2024 elections in rearview both parties are trying to grapple with what lessons they should learn. Who better to offer unsolicited advice than Josh Lewis and Blake Fischer, the respective hosts of the Saving Elephants and The Homeless Conservative podcasts? As two Trump-skeptical conservatives on the outside looking in, sure both parties are eager to hear their thoughts on how both parties should proceed in the elections ahead. In this episode, Josh and Blake take a deep dive into what went wrong and what went right for the Republicans in 2024 and what might help them secure their newfound majorities for elections to come. But wait, there's more! This episode is the first in a two-part series. In part 2 Blake puts Josh on the hot seat to ask what lessons the Democratic party should take from their 2024 losses. But you won't find that conversation on the Saving Elephants podcast. Instead, it appears as a special cross-over episode on Blake's The Homeless Conservative, which you can listen to here. About Blake Fischer and the Homeless Conservative Blake Fischer is a political junkie, so you don't necessarily have to be. A lifelong conservative, Blake covers conservative policies, current politics, and the historical context of today's events. With a unique blend of media critique and a focus on the big issues that often go unaddressed, Blake offers insightful solutions to pressing problems without the fear-mongering or populist outrage used in mainstream political media. Blake says, “I know a lot of people who would consider themselves more conservative than liberal, but don't like Trump and feel like there's nowhere for them in the Republican party. Welcome to the club! But if that's you, I'd encourage you to not check out completely because we need reasonable citizens in this country to pay attention and vote accordingly if we want to change the direction of government and politics.” Blake lives in Oklahoma and is the creator of The Homeless Conservative.
