Songwriter, singer, author, and musician's advocate Shelly Peiken joins the podcast in this episode. She's written some of the biggest hits of the past 30 years like What A Girl Wants, Almost Doesn't Count, Come On Over Baby, Bitch, and so many more. Shelly talks about what got her into music as a kid and how she pivoted from a career in fashion to music. Being a hit songwriter was not straightforward or immediate. But once she sold a song that found it's way onto a Taylor Dayne album, she discovered that songwriting was more her style than being a touring musician.   Shelly talks about how she wrote some of her biggest hits, how she also sang on some of them, and how digital delivery changed EVERYTHING and changed it almost overnight. That's when she helped found Songwriters Of North America and advocated for the modernization of songwriters' rights. In addition to writing hit songs, Shelly has also written a hit book, was nominated for a Grammy, and has won a She Rocks Award! So what's next for her? She's in the middle of writing a musical. This conversation was an amazing behind the curtain look at songwriting, how it's changed over the years, and more. We even answer the question, “if you write the song but someone else records it before you, are you covering yourself when you record it?” Check out Shelly Peiken at shellypeiken.com, on Facebook or Instagram. A 2017 Best Spoken Word Album Grammy Nominee! Confessions of a Serial Songwriter is an amusing and poignant memoir about songwriter Shelly Peiken's journey from young girl falling under the spell of magical songs to working professional songwriter writing hits of her own. It's about growing up, the creative process – the highs and the lows, the conflicts that arise between motherhood and career success, the divas and schemers, but also the talented and remarkable people she's found along the way. It's filled with stories and step-by-step advice about the songwriting process, especially collaboration. And it's about the challenge of staying relevant in a rapidly changing and youth-driven world. As Shelly so eloquently states in Confessions of a Serial Songwriter: “If I had to come up with one X factor that I could cite as a characteristic most hit songs have in common (and this excludes hit songs that are put forth by an already well-oiled machine...that is, a recording artist who has so much notoriety and momentum that just about anything he or she releases, as long as it's 'pretty good ' will have a decent shot at succeeding), I would say it would be: A universal sentiment in a unique frame.” Peiken has tapped the universal sentiment again and again; her songs have been recorded by such artists as Christina Aguilera, Natalie Cole, Selena Gomez, Celine Dion, the Pretenders, and others. In Confessions of a Serial Songwriter, she pulls the curtain back on the music business from the perspective of a behind-the-scenes hit creator and shares invaluable insight into the craft of songwriting.

This week, #WomenCrush Music Founder, Ashley Kervabon, chats with the organization's Queen of Operations (and recording artist) Moe Lincoln about how to balance being a business person, artist and being a woman in the industry. They discuss different roles in the industry, important basic business tips, how to get started as an artist & how to stay sane while doing it all. The resources they mention range from networking events like Balanced Breakfast (https://www.blncdbrkfst.com/), Facebook groups (Music Biz Besties, GBTRS & MICNG) and books like Shelly Peiken's Confessions of a Serial Songwriter & David Baskerville's Music Business Handbook & Career Guide.  About #WomenCrush Music (www.womencrushmusic.com):  #WomenCrush Music is a non-profit organization that serves to create opportunities for rising women songwriters by hosting international showcases, educational workshops & networking events. Whether they are just in the beginning of their careers and want to start performing at local venues, or they’ve just released their second album and are ready to go on tour. #WomenCrush Music wants to connect artists with future collaborators, educate them about the business and inspire them to make an impact on this male-dominated industry. It was founded in January 2017, when Ashley Kervabon saw a need to build a stronger community amongst women in the music industry in Portland, OR. When the first showcase was a success, Ashley reached out to women in her online music communities to see if any other cities had ongoing showcase series for women artists. It was then that she realized there was a void that needed to be filled and she started her expansion by bringing the showcase series to her hometown of NYC. By fall of 2017 #WomenCrush had grown dramatically, including several new team members and many more new cities launching in 2018, such as, Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin, New Orleans, Nashville, San Francisco, San Jose, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Missoula! My first hosted radio show with guest Michael Nesmith, blazing the airwaves with GoodTimes, arguably the best Monkees album, maybe ever, and, his cuts, Me and Magdelena, and I Know What I Know, amongst the best of his recorded music. That's saying a lot. We talk about what sparked his passion as a young lad and what sparks it today. The journey of The Nez. Please join me and producer Justin Lebens, Emmy Winner for the Foo Fighters Sonic Highways from Ridgerock Studios in the beautiful Hollywood Hills on Conversations Radio Network.
