Songwriter, singer, author, and musician's advocate Shelly Peiken joins the podcast in this episode. She's written some of the biggest hits of the past 30 years like What A Girl Wants, Almost Doesn't Count, Come On Over Baby, Bitch, and so many more. Shelly talks about what got her into music as a kid and how she pivoted from a career in fashion to music. Being a hit songwriter was not straightforward or immediate. But once she sold a song that found it's way onto a Taylor Dayne album, she discovered that songwriting was more her style than being a touring musician. Shelly talks about how she wrote some of her biggest hits, how she also sang on some of them, and how digital delivery changed EVERYTHING and changed it almost overnight. That's when she helped found Songwriters Of North America and advocated for the modernization of songwriters' rights. In addition to writing hit songs, Shelly has also written a hit book, was nominated for a Grammy, and has won a She Rocks Award! So what's next for her? She's in the middle of writing a musical. This conversation was an amazing behind the curtain look at songwriting, how it's changed over the years, and more. We even answer the question, “if you write the song but someone else records it before you, are you covering yourself when you record it?” Check out Shelly Peiken at shellypeiken.com, on Facebook or Instagram. She is also an educator and is a founding member of the Songwriters of North America, advocating for creators' rights. Welcome to Season 3, Episode 2 of Song Chronicles. Our guest today is Michelle Lewis, an Emmy- and Peabody-winning songwriter and composer and an advocate of songwriters' rights as executive director of SONA. Michelle's parents were both musicians. Her dad was the tenor saxophone player in Frank Sinatra's band and her mom was a session singer who sang with the likes of Benny Goodman. Michelle talks about what it was like to tag along with her parents in the early seventies scene of working musicians in New York as "the little mascot of the cats." Michelle recording jingles as a kid After college, Michelle had a deal with Irving Azoff's Giant Records as a recording artist. Later her songs were recorded by other artists, including Cher, Amy Grant, Kelly Osbourne, and Lindsay Lohan. We talk about the invisibility of songwriters and the skill involved into distilling your life experience into words that can be sung by someone else, like a screenwriter writing for actors. More recently, Michelle has been a composer for children's television, including Doc McStuffins, for which she won a Peabody Award. She shares how writing for television lets her express a different range of creativity because it's not bound by genre. Michelle with her Peabody Award In 2015, Michelle had a cut on an album that sold millions of copies and yet she was paid a fraction of what her 2005 hit was worth. Learning how much streaming technology had devalued the work of songwriters, she got together with songwriters Shelly Peiken, Pam Sheyne, Kay Hanley, Adam Dorn, Jack Kugell, and attorney Dina LaPolt to form SONA, Songwriters of North America. SONA pushes for changes to legislation like the Music Modernization Act which updated how songwriters are paid mechanicals to reflect the streaming music landscape. Michelle breaks down the different sources of revenue for songwriters including mechanicals, performance royalties, publishing, and syncs. SONA meeting with Senator Edward Markey Michelle is a mentor with WriteGirl, an organization that provides free mentoring to girls interested in songwriting and other types of writing including poetry, fiction, journalism, and screenwriting. We talk about the experience of helping girls write their first songs and how their lives are changed after seeing their songs performed. Michelle shares a story about watching future National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman develop her voice in WriteGirl workshops. WriteGirl songwriting workshop Enjoy this conversation about the importance of the jobs of songwriters, who provide the soundtrack to our lives.

Different decades, different artists, same result: hit songs for Brandy, Christina Aguelera, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Demi Lovato, Celine Dion and Keith Urban. Songwriter Shelly Peiken could be considered the "Queen of the Woman Empowerment Anthem." She's written tons of songs for tons of artists - everyone from Britney and Celine to Miley and Brandy. But her two biggest anthems are also her biggest hits - "What a Girl Wants" by Christina Aguilera and "Bitch" by Meredith Brooks. These days she's taking matters into her own hands as she prepares to release her first solo album, 2.0 etc in August. She also wrote a fantastic book about all of it called Confessions of a Serial Songwriter that is as honest and enjoyable as her songs are. We discuss her place in the business today, her legacy, the new album, and the stories behind these songs and more including INXS, Joe Cocker and Meat Loaf. A couple former guests factor heavily in this conversation as well. She's an engaging and wise woman. Enjoy! www.shellypeiken.com https://www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
Shelly Peiken is a Grammy Award Nominated songwriter, an artist and author, best known for writing songs for the likes of Christina Aguilera, Mandy Moore, Meredith Brooks, Miley Cyrus, NSYNC, Brandi, Demi Lovato and so many more. Shelly has an incredible songwriting resume, including one of my favorite songs, “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks. She had the first number 1 song of the new millennium with, “What a Girl Wants” by Christina Aguilera. Twenty years later, after a whole career of writing for other people’s voices, she finally decided it was time to step forward and put her songs out, herself. She did this by revisiting some of her most beloved hits with an album called 2.0, which will be out this summer. From our conversation you’ll learn: The backstory of how her first hit song, “Bitch” was written Why she almost gave up right before she got her first hit How songwriting has changed in the last 20 years How to know who to take creative advice from Why the universe responds when you follow what feels good Behind the scenes details of what it was like to almost work with Britney Spears (and what she's really like) Why it can be an advantage to hustle and even struggle for a while before you make it Tips for Creative Moms Pre-save Shelly’s New Song: https://cmg.ffm.to/notebook Listen my single, "Rise" out Now: https://ffm.to/laurenlograssorise Read my People Magazine Article: https://people.com/music/lauren-lograsso-new-song-rise/ Follow the show @UnleashYourInnerCreative & @LaurenLoGrasso for updates and exclusive content! --- This episode is sponsored by · That's Really Cool Man Podcast: That's Really Cool Man is the official podcast of the internet's worst animator, Danny Casale aka Coolman Coffeedan. https://www.coolmancoffeedan.com/ · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/unleashyourinnercreative/message

A 2017 Best Spoken Word Album Grammy Nominee! Confessions of a Serial Songwriter is an amusing and poignant memoir about songwriter Shelly Peiken's journey from young girl falling under the spell of magical songs to working professional songwriter writing hits of her own. It's about growing up, the creative process – the highs and the lows, the conflicts that arise between motherhood and career success, the divas and schemers, but also the talented and remarkable people she's found along the way. It's filled with stories and step-by-step advice about the songwriting process, especially collaboration. And it's about the challenge of staying relevant in a rapidly changing and youth-driven world. As Shelly so eloquently states in Confessions of a Serial Songwriter: “If I had to come up with one X factor that I could cite as a characteristic most hit songs have in common (and this excludes hit songs that are put forth by an already well-oiled machine...that is, a recording artist who has so much notoriety and momentum that just about anything he or she releases, as long as it's 'pretty good ' will have a decent shot at succeeding), I would say it would be: A universal sentiment in a unique frame.” Peiken has tapped the universal sentiment again and again; her songs have been recorded by such artists as Christina Aguilera, Natalie Cole, Selena Gomez, Celine Dion, the Pretenders, and others. In Confessions of a Serial Songwriter, she pulls the curtain back on the music business from the perspective of a behind-the-scenes hit creator and shares invaluable insight into the craft of songwriting.

From October 2015: Today, I wrap up my conversation with the incredible Shelly Peiken! We continued the conversation as Shelly and I discussed her forthcoming book, Confessions Of a Serial Songwriter. I asked her about some of her collaborative relationships and how each partner brought a unique dynamic to her creative efforts. I also attempted to bond with Shelly by reminiscing about the seventies music we grew up with and how it influenced us. Then it was just chitchat leading into a parting piece of what I called “Shelly wisdom,” and I know you’ll just love listening to her for the entire episode. She is one of the best there is. ENJOY! ~ Dean
From October 2015: “I wanna thank you, Shelly Peiken, for giving me some great insight on songwriting.” This is what I said to my very special guest after shaking off the nervousness of interviewing a truly creative professional songwriter. As you will sense from the conversation, Shelly has a warm and calm demeanor, and definitely has a passion for creating songs, often with a partner (“I like the company.”) She had some helpful things to say about getting writer’s block out of your system, and advice on how to help creative ideas flow more freely. She and I briefly reviewed her four biggest songs, as I am sure she’s done so many times. But it was fun to hear about how, in the 1980’s, she went about submitting her material to a major recording artist, and how one of those songs got onto a debut album, which soared to triple platinum status. Please enjoy the program, and don’t miss the conclusion in the following episode! ~ Dean
In this episode you’ll have the pleasure of hearing confessions of serial, #1, award-winning songwriter, Shelly Peiken. She and Meredith Brooks took a risk with their '90s pop anthem “Bitch,” which ended up topping the charts, receiving a Grammy nomination and several tv/film placements. Shelly received her first #1 hit with Christina Aguilera for “What A Girl Wants” followed by “Come On Over Baby.” In our interview we chat about her songwriting career, and her most recent tour series, "Living Room Live" where she shares her journey through monologue and song. The tour is based off her grammy nominated book, “Confessions of a Serial Songwriter,” which we talk about in this interview as well. I had a great time getting to know Shelly during her visit to Nashville for Tin Pan South Songwriting Seminar this past April. This week, #WomenCrush Music Founder, Ashley Kervabon, chats with the organization's Queen of Operations (and recording artist) Moe Lincoln about how to balance being a business person, artist and being a woman in the industry. They discuss different roles in the industry, important basic business tips, how to get started as an artist & how to stay sane while doing it all. The resources they mention range from networking events like Balanced Breakfast (https://www.blncdbrkfst.com/), Facebook groups (Music Biz Besties, GBTRS & MICNG) and books like Shelly Peiken's Confessions of a Serial Songwriter & David Baskerville's Music Business Handbook & Career Guide. About #WomenCrush Music (www.womencrushmusic.com): #WomenCrush Music is a non-profit organization that serves to create opportunities for rising women songwriters by hosting international showcases, educational workshops & networking events. Whether they are just in the beginning of their careers and want to start performing at local venues, or they’ve just released their second album and are ready to go on tour. #WomenCrush Music wants to connect artists with future collaborators, educate them about the business and inspire them to make an impact on this male-dominated industry. It was founded in January 2017, when Ashley Kervabon saw a need to build a stronger community amongst women in the music industry in Portland, OR. When the first showcase was a success, Ashley reached out to women in her online music communities to see if any other cities had ongoing showcase series for women artists. It was then that she realized there was a void that needed to be filled and she started her expansion by bringing the showcase series to her hometown of NYC. By fall of 2017 #WomenCrush had grown dramatically, including several new team members and many more new cities launching in 2018, such as, Los Angeles, Chicago, Austin, New Orleans, Nashville, San Francisco, San Jose, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Missoula! Follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay posted on their events at @womencrushmusic.
