Despite the song's lyrics that illustrate Meredith Brooks' multitude of qualities and flaws, it's the first line of the chorus of “Bitch” that turned heads in 1997. After a long music career that spanned three decades, this undeniably catchy pop song put the veteran singer and guitarist on the map. The song felt empowering and special when it came out, but how does it hold up now? And did Meredith turn out to be an artist we SHOULD actually be paying attention to? Rob and Matt talk with legendary singer / songwriter MELANIE! We talk to Melanie about her experience at the original woodstock as one of only 3 solo performers.  Melanie goes into great detail about her experience; Starting with the moment she first heard of woodstock, flying for the first time in a helicopter and taking the stage in front of a massive audience (unlike anything she ever experienced). We also talk about: Her #1 song (in 1970) BRAND NEW KEY and how she came up with the idea for the song (you won't believe what it was).   Performing with Miley Cyrus (Backyard Sessions) Melanie's new album MAGIC BUS.  This is a radio interview and music from 1972.   We loved talking to Melanie and reliving many memories with her and you'll love this interview. *********** A little bit about Melanie: Melanie landed in the New York City music and radio scene in the late 1960's. Her first single Beautiful People immediately became a turntable hit. Her first tour began with an impressive 40-day run of shows at Paris' world-famous L'Olympia Theater at the personal invitation of Bruno Coquatrix. In the years to come she would entertain millions: at An Aquarian Exposition (the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival), at Carnegie Hall, and the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury music festivals, The Sydney Opera House, the South Korean DMZ, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Royal Albert Hall, and other theaters, halls and beloved music clubs around the globe. Melanie launched Neighborhood Records, making her the first American woman to open a mainstream record label. She recorded over 20 chart hits and many have been re-recorded. Melanie received an Emmy after composing lyrics for the theme song of the hit television series Beauty and the Beast. “What Have They Done to My Song Ma” was re-recorded by Ray Charles with the Count Basie Band. Nina Simone delivered a remarkable rendition, as well. “(Lay Down) Candles in the Rain” was re-recorded by Mott the Hoople on their 1971 album Wildlife. Meredith Brooks and Queen Latifah later re-recorded the anthem. “Some Say (I Got Devil)" was re-recorded by Smith's frontman Morrissey. Melanie has always known her calling in life was to entertain. Audiences have welcomed her to the stage for more than fifty years, and she continues to perform today. ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.   Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see 2 video segments from this interview.  Just search "know good music". We have returned from a long hiatus to discuss a wonderful book entitled Bitch: On the Female of the Species by Lucy Cooke. Sarah asked James and Mark to read this book that gives an updated look at Darwin's original model of sexual selection, a topic we covered extensively in Season 4. In this episode we cover the introduction and first 2 chapters of the book.In our conversation about the book, we discuss how Darwin's stereotypical, and simplistic. views of male and female roles in mating and reproduction have persisted 150 years later. As Sarah says, we are still suffering from the hangover Darwin's misogyny. Chapter one of the book does a great job challenging the simplistic notion of what "is a female?", and we explore that topic in detail. Mark was enamored with the existence of gynandromorphs (gyn=female, andro=male, morph=form), organisms that exhibit both male and female phenotypic structures. This led us to discuss the difference between sex and gender and why the simplistic view, often exposed in popular culture of late, of there being only 2 sexes, is incorrect and ignores actual biology. Image taken from https://www.eriebirdobservatory.org/ebo-blog/2021/2/21/a-second-bilateral-gynandromorph-northern-cardinal-in-northwest-pennsylvaniaWe also discuss how stereotypical gender roles influence how biologists interpret the behaviors they observed which often leads to misunderstanding and faulty interpretations. We encourage our listeners to read along with us, as we plan to discuss Chapters 3 & 4 next episode. Lucy Cooke (Photo: David Dunkerley)Here is another example of gynandromorphs, but in butterflies.Image from https://www.earth.com/news/gynandromorphs-half-male-half-female/The opening theme to Discovering Darwin is "May" by Jared C. Check your phone voice, boo. When you're talking about your business or your work in this world, do you raise the pitch of your voice up into the customer service register? NO SHAME. But flipping into Nice Mode or “phone voice” is HURTING your biz. We were socialized to put more importance on being polite and nice than actually saying the true, real thing that might be upsetting. This doesn't mean you should go be a jerk on purpose, but this is your permission slip to stop trying so hard to be polite at all costs. Because that niceness is often not in service to your client OR your business. It is your job as the coach or provider to be the EXPERT and show up in LEADERSHIP. It is not your job to please your client. Saying THE THING, even when it feels rude or too much, CREATES trust. Find out exactly how and why in this episode. She is the mother of two children, ages 20 and 17, and currently lives in Pennsylvania where she works as a therapist, a kayak instructor, and a ski instructor. I wanted Kimberly to share her story on the show because she is the rare unicorn who has no physical perimenopause symptoms, but she does have emotional ones. It's an interesting dynamic that you will hear Kimberly talk about, as she shares what her unique perimenopause experience has been like without the telltale markers that many of us depend on to know where we are on the menopause journey. Kimberly has thought deeply about what perimenopause means, beyond the physical, and she's living a life that shows that this meaningful transition period is about so much more than waning hormones and erratic periods.  Some of the things Kimberly discusses include: Being kind to her body and focusing on where it can take her instead of what it looks like Why having rage issues without hot flashes is crazy-making and confusing How perimenopause impacted her decision to quit her “perfect job” Why she decided NOT to follow her husband to California when he got a new job and how that decision has made her perimenopause experience - and her marriage -  better. ******************************** If you live in the Allentown, PA area and are interested in working with Kimberly for therapy, use this link to her practice.
