The foundation begins with crafting a written career plan complete with your personal mission, vision, and SMART goals—providing clarity and decision-making guidance when opportunities arise. John shares an example of what his career roadmap might have looked like during the transition to hospital CMO, demonstrating how specificity creates momentum. Building on this foundation, John explores four complementary acceleration tools:  finding an accountability partner who keeps you honest about commitments, developing strategic mentor relationships with those who've walked your desired path, investing in professional career coaching for structured guidance, and harnessing the exponential power of mastermind groups where collective wisdom propels everyone forward.  The episode concludes with thoughts on a potential hospital management mastermind program John is considering launching for physicians specifically targeting C-suite positions. In this solo episode, I break down the recent controversy surrounding a career guide published by Indeed, the world's largest job site, with 365 million daily users and over 3.5 million employers. Here's a teaser: The guide labeled ages 45-55 as “late career” and 55-65 as “decline,” sparking an outcry over its ageist language.I stumbled across the uproar late one night on LinkedIn and decided to post my thoughts, which quickly went viral. Indeed responded within hours, issuing an apology and removing the offensive content, but the damage was already done! The guide perpetuated harmful stereotypes, like the idea that workers in their 40s and 50s should aim for less demanding roles and stop learning new skills. This couldn't be further from the truth—many of us are thriving in our careers at this stage, with plenty of energy and ambition. While I appreciate how quickly Indeed responded, I still question how the management allowed the guide to be published in the first place. It raises concerns about whether they truly support an age-inclusive work environment. But this situation has opened up an important conversation about ageism, and I'm hopeful it will lead to lasting change. Can several viral posts on LinkedIn really change how a major corporation thinks about age? Join me as we explore how this Indeed debacle can serve as a catalyst for real change in tackling ageism in the workplace. Don't worry—we'll get some solid career advice and probably a few laughs too.In This Episode:-Introduction and overview of Indeed's corporate values-Personal experience with the career guide controversy-Career stages in Indeed's career guide-Critique of the career guide's advice-Raising a successor for your position-Retirement in your forties: myth or reality?-The "decline" era: what to expect-The reality of ageism in the workplace-Indeed's apology and future stepsResources Mentioned in the Episode:-Indeed's live webinar on November 7, 2024, titled “Success and Satisfaction in the Later Stages of Your Career”: https://www.linkedin.com/events/7237487552620843009/ -Indeed's article, “Ageism in the Workplace: Its Impact and How to Prevent It”: https://www.indeed.com/hire/c/info/ageism-in-the-workplace -Indeed's article, “ADEA: An Employer's Guide to the Age Discrimination in Employment Act”: https://www.indeed.com/hire/c/info/adea#:~:text=The%20purpose%20of%20the%20ADEA,ability%20when%20making%20those%20decisions. -Maureen's LinkedIn post: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/maureenwclough_are-you-over-55-indeed-as-in-the-one-that-activity-7235228512918388738-wIYC?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_iosConnect with Maureen Clough:-Instagram: @itgetslateearly - https://www.instagram.com/itgetslateearly/-YouTube: @itgetslateearly...

After my first decade of coding, I learned so much I thought: "I must be at least somewhat intelligent, right?". But there was something more valuable I lacked - wisdom. Without wisdom, you'll make decisions in your career that look right in the short term - but turn out disastrous over time. Wisdom is the ability to make decisions when the rules don't apply. There's no book you can read, no guide to follow, and no clear cut answer. It's derived from experience, sound judgment, a broad perspective, and considering the ethical implications of a decision. And if you learn to cultivate wisdom, you can achieve the things that really matter in your career - and life. In this episode I share why people in tech careers often mistake intelligence for wisdom. Then I'll help you understand why our industry is so prone to making unwise decisions. I'll go on to help you see the dangerous outcomes of short-term thinking. And finally, I'll share some practical things you can do to become a wiser programmer - and technologist in general. If you've never been an addict, you may be surprised to know many programmers (and other people in tech job roles) struggle with drug use. Nobody working in tech is a stranger to stress and pressure! But sometimes the ways we cope are unhealthy. If you're currently using, I've been honest and transparent with you - I've been there. I was a marijuana addict for 25 years, and often used it with the rationale that it helped me manage the stress of my job. However, I learned the hard way that using drugs to cope with work creates more problems than it solves. In this episode, I'd like to help you understand WHY drug use is so prevalent in the tech industry. I'll also share the consequences to your career that arise from ongoing use of drugs. And finally, I'll offer some healthier ways to cope with the inherent problems that programming and tech related jobs introduce - rather than turning to drugs as a coping mechanism. I hope this helps you have some compassion for your coworkers who may be trapped in addiction, do what you can to improve the conditions we all work in, and if you're currently struggling - get help so you can flourish in your career! Considering a career in real estate or planning to switch to a new brokerage in 2024? I'm here to help you navigate this important decision. In this informative video, I will share vital tips for choosing the right real estate brokerage, ensuring your career takes off in the right direction. Commission Structure: Let's talk about the significance of understanding the commission structure of the brokerage you're considering. Questions like the commission percentage, payment split, and the existence of a cap are crucial. She uses her own experience with EXP, where a $16,000 cap ensures agents know what to expect financially. Additional Fees: Beyond commissions, I advise you to inquire about any additional fees. Some brokerages may have fees for E&O insurance, desk usage, or lead generation. Knowing these costs upfront helps you plan your budget effectively. Leads: Lead generation is a vital aspect of success in real estate. Let's discuss whether the brokerage provides leads, how many, and whether they are exclusive. Understanding the lead system is key to maximizing your opportunities. Training and Education: New to real estate or looking to enhance your skills? We shall discuss the importance of training and education. Does the brokerage offer mentorship, marketing plans, or scripts? Joining an organization invested in your growth is crucial for long-term success.  Marketing Support: Marketing is the backbone of any successful real estate business. Let's also talk about how the brokerage can assist in developing your brand and marketing your listings. Does the brokerage provide a marketing budget, and how is it funded? Technology and Tools: A solid CRM system is essential for lead management. I will highlight the importance of having the right technology and tools at your disposal. EXP, for instance, provides these resources at no extra cost to agents. Brokerage Culture: Let's align yourself with a brokerage that shares your values and goals. Each brokerage may have a different culture and support network, so choose one that suits your needs. My Expertise: With a track record of selling over 2,300 homes and being in the top 1% of agents nationwide, I am a trusted source of real estate advice.  Make the Right Choice: In a competitive real estate world, your choice of brokerage can significantly impact your career. Navigating Salary Negotiation for Civil Engineers: A Beginner to Mid-Career Guide

The Engineering our Future Empowering Engineers to Become Leaders Podcast

If you are an engineer in the early to mid-stages of your career, mastering the nuances of salary negotiation is crucial to make sure you are compensated failry and advance in your career. Whether you're starting your first job or looking for a significant raise, understanding how to effectively negotiate your salary is a skill that will serve you well throughout your career. Understanding Industry Standards in Civil Engineering Begin your salary negotiation by researching the standard salary range for civil engineers in your area and with your level of experience. Resources like the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) provide valuable data on average salaries in different specializations and regions. I have personally used their annual salary survey to see where I stand. As a ASCE member, you get 5 reports. Highlighting Your Engineering Skills and Experience In a field as diverse as civil engineering, your specific skill set can have a significant influence your salary. Early on you should emphasize any specialized training, internships, or project experiences you may have to fill the technical experience gap. Mid-career engineers should highlight their track record of successful projects, leadership roles, and any relevant certifications or skills, like proficiency in specialized software or sustainable design practices.Company Size and Project Budgets Understand that salaries can vary widely depending on the company size and the industry they are in. Large firms or firms with high-budget projects may give you higher salaries compared to smaller firms or those focusing on less lucrative projects. However, smaller firms might offer other benefits like a more diverse range of projects or faster career advancement.Market Demand and Specialty Civil engineering is a broad field with varying demand across specialties. Areas like infrastructure, sustainable design, and smart city projects might have higher demand, potentially leading to better salary prospects. The best way to take advantage of this is to keep up to date on industry trends and how they might affect your marketability and salary potential.Cost of Living Considerations As a civil engineer, you might find opportunities in various geographic locations. A salary that is competitive in a small town might not suffice in a major city. Adjust your salary expectations based on the cost of living of where you live.Beyond Salary: Benefits and Work-Life Balance Consider the entire compensation package, including benefits like health insurance, retirement plans, and professional development opportunities. Work-life balance is particularly important in the demanding field of civil engineering, so consider perks like flexible working arrangements or opportunities for remote work.Aligning with Your Career Goals Reflect on your career trajectory and personal goals. Are you aiming for a role in project management, or do you aspire to specialize in a niche area of civil engineering? Your salary expectations should align with these career aspirations and the steps needed to achieve them.Thank you for reading Engineering our Future. This post is public so feel free to share it.Effective Negotiation Tactics for Engineers As an engineer, your approach to negotiation should be methodical and data-driven. Prepare by gathering salary data, listing your achievements and qualifications, and practicing your negotiation skills. Remember, negotiation is not just about the salary figure; it's about establishing your value to the company.Understanding Your Employer's Financial Health Be aware of the financial health of your potential employer. A firm with a strong portfolio of ongoing projects may be in a better position to offer a higher salary than a firm with fewer projects.Future Growth and Professional Development Consider the potential for professional growth and salary progression within the firm. Opportunities for ongoing training, certifications, and promotions are valuable for long-term career development in civil engineering.Exploring Alternative Compensation If a higher base salary isn't negotiable, consider other forms of compensation like signing bonuses, performance bonuses, or additional paid leave. These can be especially appealing in the early stages of your career.Leveraging Your Current Position If you're already employed, use your current salary and role as a benchmark, but don't limit your expectations to incremental increases. Focus on what you should earn based on industry standards and your qualifications. As a civil engineer, whether you're just embarking on your professional journey or are a decade into your career, mastering salary negotiation is crucial for your career progression and financial well-being. When you have industry knowledge, a clear understanding of your personal value, and strategic negotiation tactics, you are well-equipped to approach these discussions with confidence. Remember, successful negotiation is a skill that develops with practice and experience. To continue improving your negotiation skills, consider joining professional forums, attending workshops, and networking with peers in the civil engineering community. These platforms can offer valuable insights, mentorship, and support, empowering you to navigate your career path effectively. Your journey in salary negotiation is not just about securing a fair compensation; it's about affirmatively shaping your career trajectory. We encourage you to take this knowledge, engage actively with your professional community, and approach your next salary.
