As much as Ben Vida's previous work has caught and held my attention, his new album with Nina Dante and Yarn/Wire, “The Beat My Head Hit,” has hit me like something else entirely. It's a phenomenal expression of a musical space Vida has been exploring for the last few years that lands in multiple ways. There are visceral reactions that lead to emotional swings from joy to wistfulness with many stops in between. I can't stop listening to it. Ben and Brad chat about collecting language, the human voice as a synthesizer, how the new album started, and where this piece of music is going in the future. “The Beat My Head Hit” is out now on Shelter Press. https://benvida.bandcamp.com/album/the-beat-my-head-hit https://www.yarnwire.org/ https://www.ninadante.com/ https://www.instagram.com/thesnakesaidtotheriver/ The Seltzer Salon is a concise, conversational podcast hosted by Brad Rose and produced by Foxy Digitalis. Each episode features a musician, artist, writer, or anyone, really, focusing on a single project or idea. I know we all have limited time each day, so I wanted to do something a little smaller scale with just as much impact, so episodes will be 25-45 minutes in length. Brad Rose is the the principal writer and editor-in-chief of Foxy Digitalis, an online music magazine and has run various DIY record labels for the last 30 years. This week we are joined by François J. Bonnet, recording artist (as Kassel Jaeger) and theoretician, Director of Groupe de Recherches Musicales of the National Audiovisual Institute (INA-GRM) in Paris, and producer on National French Radio France Musique. We talk with him about the recent publication of the english translation of his book "After Death" (2020, Urbanomic)in the context of the current pandemic and the general externalisation and disembodiment of death. We do end up divagating about improvisation, the sublime, romanticism and other meta-musical tropes in the direction of François' most recent book "The Music To Come" (2020, Shelter Press). https://www.urbanomic.com/book/after-death/ https://shelterpress.bandcamp.com/merch/fran-ois-j-bonnet-the-music-to-come-english-edition

Stockholm-based composer Ellen Arkbro is known for her work as a minimalistic explorer of experimental and ambient territories. Here she has made a mix featuring Japanese and Scandinavian music for acoustic string instruments, rhythmic electronic music, and two works for organ composed by her colleagues and dear friends Isak Edberg and Kali Malone. In her own words: "This is music that inspires me, music that brings clarity to mind. Arranged in this particular order, this collection of music reveals some of the ways in which seemingly distinct kinds of music are ultimately non-different. “ Tracklist: Isak Edberg - Lamé [Composed for the Dübenorgan in Stockholm in 2010] Yoshi Wada - Off The Wall I [Off The Wall, FMP 1985] Gabor Lazar - Crisis of Representation #4 [Crisis Of Representation, Shelter Press 2017] Kim Myhr - Sleep Nothing, Eat Nothing [All Your Limbs Singing, Sofa 2014] Mark Fell - Multistability 3 [Multistability, Raster-Noton 2010] Henry Flynt - Celestial Power [You Are My Everlovin / Celestial Power, Edition Hundertmark 1986] Kim Myhr - Harbor me [All Your Limbs Singing, Sofa 2014] Mamoru Fujieda - The Third Collection, Pattern IX [Patterns of Plant, Tzadik 1997] David Stackenäs - Morioka [Bricks, Clean Feed 2017] Kali Malone - Glory Canon III [Organ Dirges 2016-2017]
