Corey Costanzo is the Co-Owner of Asheville's Still Point Wellness Spa, a licensed addiction counselor, trauma specialist, licensed massage and bodywork therapist, master didgeridoo player, colleague, and my good friend. In this episode, Corey and I have a conversation about the challenges in talking about hard topics and ways we avoid doing it. We share personal stories as well as understandings in our work as therapists. Avoiding hard topic is one of the biggest silent killers in relationships. Many people dodge uncomfortable conversations to keep the peace, but that usually just builds resentment, misunderstandings, and eventual explosions. Fear has a way of exposing the questions our hearts are really asking: Am I safe? Will someone hold me? Will anyone stay? In Psalm 27, David discovers a Father who answers every one of those fears with His unshakable presence. Join us as we discover the hope, security, and rest found in Jesus.Talk It Over:1. Which of these three questions do you find yourself asking most often right now? Am I safe? Will You hold me? Will You stay? Why?2. What fears tend to reveal what you believe about yourself or about God? Where are you most tempted to become your own “light” or “salvation”?3. What stood out to you about the picture of God as a Father who protects, holds, and never leaves His children? Was there a truth that challenged or encouraged you?4. David longed to be near God's presence, but through Jesus we have Christ living in us. How does that change the way we face fear this week?5. What's one situation this week where you need to remember one of these truths? I am safe. I am held. I am never abandoned.+ + + + +Hey, while you're here, please help Generation by clicking the 'Subscribe' button, then click on the BELL

Most of us don't pray honestly. Not because we're trying to be fake, but because we're not sure God can handle the real version. So we edit. We soften. We bring the composed version and hope it's enough.Psalm 13 blows that up. David shows up with accusations, exhaustion, and zero filter...and God didn't redact a word of it. He put it in the Bible. This message is about what makes that kind of honesty possible. It's about a love that was decided before you woke up this morning, that doesn't flinch at your anger or your doubt or your 2AM spiral. And it's about why the cross changes everything about how we pray in a "how long" season.Talk It Over:1. David prays with zero filter, accusation, exhaustion, raw honesty. When you pray, which version of yourself usually shows up? Why do you think that is?2. Observation #1 is about naming the gap between what God promised and what life actually feels like. What's a gap you've been afraid to name out loud, even to God?3. We talked about the 2AM spiral, where we're running scenarios, mapping outcomes, trying to think your way out of something thinking can't fix. What does your version of that look like, and have you ever brought it to God unfiltered?4. The pivot in verse 5 happens before anything changes. What would it look like for you to say "but I trust" right now…not because circumstances improved, but because 'hesed' doesn't change?5. David had a promise. We have the cross. How does knowing what 'hesed' actually cost change the way you pray in a "how long" season?+ + + + +Hey, while you're here, please help Generation by clicking the 'Subscribe' button, then click on the BELL

In this solocast I talk about probably the most important decision you will make in your life, choosing a partner. A strong match can amplify happiness, health and success for decades; where a poor one can drain energy, create chaos and affect children adversely. In the beginning when dating, date with intention rather than desperation or just entertainment. Know yourself well so you are clearer in what you are experiencing that is right for you. Many people also avoid deeper questions in the beginning of their relationship. I give examples of some of these questions to get clearer and not just caught up in the attraction. It is important that you pay attention to consistency in availability, response to your needs, and comfort with vulnerability. Choose Well! Let's Talk About It! Phoebe Klaus, L.Ac, MTOM is a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine specializing in pediatric and teen wellness. A joyful devotee of Mother Earth, she explores the deep relationships between people, plants, and the spirit that connects all living things. From her off-grid home in the Appalachian forest, Phoebe spends her days growing and processing herbs, tending her homestead, and learning from the wisdom of both nature and human culture. She shares this life of wonder and joy with her husband, three teens, baby daughter, and two dogs. In this episode, Phoebe and I talk about her experience of "re-mothering" herself as a result of losing her mother at a very young age. She describes the process of intentionally giving herself the nurturing, safety, and unconditional love that a healthy mother would have provided in her life. Almost all of us are carrying something we've worked very hard to keep in the dark. The Friday night. The addiction. The version of you nobody on Sunday gets to see.Psalm 51 is David's song from the floor, written after his affair with Bathsheba blew his whole life apart. It's raw, it's honest, and most of us have prayed some version of it. But here's what Matt unpacks in this message: David was reaching across a thousand years for what Jesus has already handed you. A clean heart. A washing that holds. A Spirit who won't leave. He was begging for what you're already living inside of.If you've ever thought God can't use someone like me, or my past disqualifies me, this one is for you. You don't have to clean yourself up before you come. Come wrecked and messy and realize that the cross of Jesus did all the cleansing and renewal you need.Come out of hiding.Discussion Questions:1. What's something you've been hiding (from God, from yourself, from people who love you)? What has the energy of keeping it hidden cost you?2. David was reaching for a clean heart, a Spirit who stays, and a sacrifice that finishes the work. He was reaching across a thousand years for what we've been handed in Christ. Which of those three do you most need to stop praying for and start living from?3. Take a moment of quiet. What is the Holy Spirit putting His finger on as you sit with this Psalm? Not "what should I do" but "what is true of me that I've been missing"?4. What would it look like this week to live from your new identity in Christ instead of for an acceptance you're trying to earn? Where specifically does this need to land: work, school, marriage, parenting, your own head when you're alone?+ + + + +Hey, while you're here, please help Generation by clicking the 'Subscribe' button, then click on the BELL

Derek Rutter is a therapist in private practice in Asheville, North Carolina. His approach specializes in using somatic parts work in the treatment of trauma, addiction, and attachment wounds. In addition to working as a therapist, Derek is a father, partner, artist and athlete. He loves the big questions and cherishes the small things. Some people think he's funny. In this episode, Derek and I have a conversation about the importance of respecting other people's boundaries. It shows respect for autonomy-treating people as capable adults rather than extension of your needs, builds trust and safety-people feel secure opening up when they know their limits won't be pushed, and it models good behavior-when you respect others, they're more likely to respect yours. Respecting other people's boundaries is a foundational skill for healthy relationships, emotional intelligence, and mutual trust. A lot of us carry misconceptions about God...that He's disappointed, distant, frustrated, or waiting for us to finally get our act together. But Psalm 139 reveals something radically different. In this message, we unpack the truth that God fully knows you, deeply loves you, constantly stays with you, and isn't asking you to perform for His acceptance. If you've struggled with shame, anxiety, loneliness, self-hatred, or feeling “not enough,” this sermon is for you.Jesus didn't come to expose you. He came to rescue you. And being fully known by God may be the safest place you've ever been.FOR GROUP DISCUSSION & REFLECTION:1. David marvels at being fully known by God, but most of us flinch at the idea. What's one area of your life where being "found out" felt (or would feel) threatening? What would it change if you believed that God already sees it all and His response is a hand of blessing, not a gavel?2. What's a misconception about God you carried for a long time that you didn't realize was wrong until later? How did it shape the way you lived?3. God assigned your value in the womb, before you had a résumé or a track record. Where do you still catch yourself trying to EARN value, whether with God, at work, or in relationships? What would it look like to stop auditioning for a role you've already been given?4. The sermon made a distinction between the voice of the accuser and the voice of God. Which voice do you hear more often and how do you tell the difference?5. David doesn't apologize for his raw honesty in verses 19-22. He actually goes DEEPER in verses 23-24. What would it look like for you to bring the unfiltered, unedited version of yourself to God this week instead of the cleaned-up "church voice" version?+ + + + +Hey, while you're here, please help Generation by clicking the 'Subscribe' button, then click on the BELL
In this solocast I talk about how love is a verb, it is in our actions. Possessiveness is usually guised in what people believe love is or in their ways they love. So we need to choose loving action over control. The idea that love is a verb emphasizes that love isn't primarily a passive feeling, emotion, or static "thing" you fall into or possess. Instead it's an active practice; a series of deliberate actions, choices, and behaviors you engage in daily. Possessiveness often shows up in jealousy, monitoring, restricting freedoms, emotional manipulation to name a few and it can erode trust and safety. I discuss practical ways to practice verb-love over possession. In this episode, Corey and I have a conversation about a common but damaging pattern blame shifting and deflection. This repeated pattern creates a "blame game" or a criticize-defend cycle, where real issues never get solved. It builds resentment, reduces emotional safety, and can lead to one or both partners to walk on eggshells. Everyone deflects occasionally under stress, it's human, but when it's a consistent pattern, it signals deeper issues like poor emotional regulation or unwillingness to take responsibility. Are you exhausted from the constant hustle for approval? Most of us spend our lives "striving"—wrestling for success, relationships, or validation to finally feel like "enough." We live as if it's all on us, but what if the blessing you're fighting for is one you already possess? In this message, we look at the life of Jacob—a man defined by "the grasp." From his birth to his adulthood, Jacob used schemes and control to secure his future. But in a midnight wrestling match with God at Peniel, Jacob discovered a life-changing truth: We win with God by finally losing. Why Listen?Identify Your Struggle: Recognize where you are striving for what only God can give.Find Your New Name: See how God moves us from "deceiver" to "chosen."Experience True Rest: Learn to live from a place of victory in Christ rather than fighting to earn one.Stop trying to con your way into an identity. Whether you're limping through a hard season or locked in a match with your circumstances, discover how to drop the act and receive the blessing already secured for you at the Cross.Big Idea: We don't have to spend our lives wrestling for the blessing that we already possess in Christ!Discussion Questions:1. What's the one thing you keep striving for that you believe will finally make you feel like enough?2. Jacob prayed sincerely and then immediately went back to scheming. Where in your life do you find yourself doing the same thing?3. Jacob stopped performing and just told the truth about himself. What would it look like for you to drop the act and come to God exactly as you are?4. "You don't behave your way to a new name. You receive it." What old name are you still living under that Jesus has already replaced?5. If every spiritual blessing is already yours in Christ, what would change about the way you live this week if you actually believed that? Keywords: Jesus in Genesis, Jacob wrestling God, Genesis 32, spiritual rest, identity in Christ, Christian podcast, sermon on Jacob.+ + + + +Hey, while you're here, please help Generation by clicking the 'Subscribe' button, then click on the BELL

Dan is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with over 36 years of clinical experience. Throughout his career, he has worked with a variety of therapeutic approaches, including Gestalt, psychodynamic, and systems-based therapies. He has practiced in diverse settings and worked with clients ranging from adolescents to adults. Dan's primary focus has always been on relationships—how we navigate both the challenges and strengths within them, move through periods of connection and disconnection, and develop healthier ways of relating to ourselves and others. He has 3 daughters and a wife who he loves to spend time with. Dan's interests range from spirituality as well as taking hikes, spending time at the ocean, and hanging out with family. In this episode Dan and I discuss that feeling emotionally disconnected from your partner can be deeply painful, but it's a common experience that often signals a need for deeper connection rather than the end of love. The pain typically arises from unmet emotional needs, unresolved conflict, stress, or differing attachment styles. Recognizing that disconnection is not a failure, but a signal to reconnect, is the first step toward healing. We all build “towers” hoping they'll give us security, identity, and a sense that our life matters. The Tower of Babel shows how humanity has always tried to construct those things apart from God. But the gospel tells a different story. Instead of climbing our way up, God came down to us in Jesus.Discussion Questions:1. Where do you most often look for security or significance in your life right now?2. What are some of the “towers” people commonly build today to feel safe or to prove they matter?3. Can you think of a time when God interrupted your plans? Looking back, how might that have been mercy?4. Why do you think it's so easy for us to drift toward self-salvation instead of trusting what God has already done?5. How does the gospel change where we look for our safety and significance?Supporting Scriptures: Genesis 9:1, Genesis 9:7, John 1:14, Acts 2:1–12, Philippians 2:5–11+ + + + +Hey, while you're here, please help Generation by clicking the 'Subscribe' button, then click on the BELL

Stress can negatively affects both partners' well-being and relationships, often leading to increased arguments, decreased intimacy, and a general sense of disconnection. The strain of dealing with stress often affects communication, making it difficult for partners to understand each other's needs and feelings. However, it can also bring a couple together, as they demonstrate their connection and positive attunement. In this episode, my wife Rainbow and I have a conversation of a recent stressful event in our lives and how we navigated it. When was the last time you said 'I'm sorry' and truly meant it? It is often easy to say the words, but to truly feel sorry - to be vulnerable, take accountability, and try to change a bad behavior or habit - it can often prove more difficult. We tend to say 'I am sorry' when we feel embarrassed about mistakes or trying to appease another person. The art of apologizing is a critical skill we must learn in order to build deep, meaningful relationship with those around us. And while we often try to avoid conflict in our day-to-day lives - especially with those closest to us - it's important to remember that it is through conflict and differences that we learn, grow, and improve ourselves and our relationships. In this solocast, I talk about "the art of apologizing" and why it is critical for deepening your relationships. I explain why conflict is necessary for self-growth and understanding and the connection between self-compassion, accountability, and a sincere apology. I also explain how a sincere apology can impact the healing process following a hurtful event, why it's okay to take time to truly feel sorry before apologizing, and how it can often lead to acceptance and forgiveness. In this solocast I talk about allowing and accepting from your partner is one of the most powerful yet underappreciated ingredients in building a strong, lasting committed relationship. Couples who practice accepting influence experience; less gridlock, fewer escalating conflicts, greater emotional safety and trust, better co-parenting, and higher overall happiness and relationship satisfaction to name a few the positive benefits. I share practical ways to do this. Related Content: Other Podcast Episodes Managing Expectations in Relationships HeartShare: Expressing Needs Let's Talk About It! When life feels unstable, your emotions swing, and your faith feels fragile, this message brings grounding hope. From 2 Corinthians 4:18, The Line and the Swing* reminds us that what we feel is not always what is most true. You are more than your circumstances, more than your thoughts, and more than your emotions. While your soul may fluctuate, your identity in Christ is finished and your union with Him is secure. Learn how to live from what is already true about you, find peace beneath the pressure, and anchor your everyday life in the unchanging reality of God's grace.FOR GROUP DISCUSSION & REFLECTION:1. The sermon talked about gospel riches already being ours, like oil under the surface. Where do you most often live as if you are spiritually broke instead of rich?2. How would you describe the difference between living from your identity versus living for your identity? What does that look like in real life this week?3. When your soul is swinging with anxiety, doubt, temptation, or disappointment, what do you usually assume that means about your relationship with God?4. Which idea was most freeing for you today: that your identity is finished, that your soul fluctuations are normal, or that union with Christ is unchanging? Why?5. How could knowing the difference between spirit and soul change the way you treat yourself or others when things feel messy or unresolved?Prov. 23:7; 2 Cor. 4:18; Heb. 10:14; Col. 2:10; 2 Cor. 5:21; Col. 1:22; 1 Pet. 2:11; Jn 3:5-8; 2 Pet. 1:4; 1 Thess. 5:23; Heb. 4:12; 1 Cor. 6:17; Heb. 6:19; Gal. 2:20* A huge thanks to Dan Stone for his contribution to this message. Have you ever tried to read the Bible and felt confused, discouraged, or quietly guilty for not “getting it”? You know it matters...but at some point you got lost and maybe even gave up.In this message, we discover a single, life-changing framework Jesus himself gives us for reading the Bible. Through the story of the road to Emmaus, Jesus shows that Scripture isn't primarily about rules to follow or heroes to imitate. It's one unified story pointing to one true Hero: Him.When we stop reading the Bible as if it's mainly about us and start reading it through the Jesus lens, everything changes. The pressure to perform gives way to freedom. Confusion turns into clarity. And seeing Jesus for who he is begins to reshape how we see God, the Bible, and ourselves. If you've ever felt burned out by trying harder, unsure how the Bible connects to real life, or hungry for a faith built on something solid, this message is for you.FOR GROUP DISCUSSION & REFLECTION:What has your experience with reading the Bible been like: encouraging, confusing, heavy, life-giving, or something else? What stood out to you most from this message? Was there a moment, phrase, or idea that shifted how you see the Bible?Where have you tended to read the Bible with yourself at the center? How has that shaped your view of God or yourself? How does seeing Jesus as the Hero change the way you approach Scripture What might look different if your goal is to see Him rather than fix yourself?+ + + + +Hey, while you're here, please help Generation by clicking the 'Subscribe' button, then click on the BELL

But if you avoid speaking up about your own needs that can lead to self judgement, inauthenticity and people pleasing. Although confrontation can be stressful, conflict can even be beneficial; if you handle it the right way, it can resolve problems and make a relationship stronger. What if the quiet ache beneath your busyness, stress, and exhaustion is really a longing for joy? Not hype. Not fleeting happiness. But a joy that lasts, even when life feels heavy. In this Advent message, we explore how Christmas doesn't give us instructions to find joy, but an announcement that joy has come. From Luke 2 and Romans 15, we're reminded that joy isn't something we achieve through better circumstances or stronger emotions. It's something we receive when we remember what's already true in Christ. If you're tired of joy that fades, weary from trying to manufacture excitement, or longing for a joy that doesn't require you to perform, this message is for you. Discover how true joy grows as we trust the good news: you are fully forgiven, deeply loved, completely secure, and never alone...because the Savior has come.DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:Where do you most notice joy fading in your everyday life?Which of the “indicators” stood out to you the most, and why do you think that one hit close to home? (Celebrations not sticking, emptiness after getting what you wanted, exhaustion from manufacturing excitement, nostalgia, or performance pressure.)How have you typically thought about joy before this message? More connected to circumstances, feelings, or something fragile?Which gospel truth feels hardest for you to trust right now? (Fully forgiven, united with Christ, deeply loved, secure, or complete. What makes that one challenging to believe?)What might it look like for you this week to “watch the video” and remember what is already true?+ + + + +Hey, while you're here, please help Generation by clicking the 'Subscribe' button, then click on the BELL

In this solocast I talk about the desire to change our partner and how well that works (tongue and cheek). It is reasonable to expect personal growth and evolution within a relationship, but this should be a shared journey of self-reflection and mutual support, not a one-sided demand. In the grand finale of our Gospel of Mark series, we step into the shock, surprise, and life-changing power of the empty tomb. Mark 15:40–16:8 reveals unlikely heroes, unexpected grace, and a resurrection that doesn't just change Jesus' story, but ours. This message explores what it means to not just live from “Friday” (forgiveness and the cross) but to start living from “Sunday” (new life and resurrection power). Discover how the risen Christ rewrites your identity, restores your calling, and invites you to walk in the freedom of who you already are in Him. It's time to live from Sunday.FOR GROUP DISCUSSION & REFLECTION:1. Where do you see yourself in the cast of “unlikely characters” at the cross and the empty tomb? How does it encourage you that God often works through the quiet, overlooked, or hesitant?2. What are some “tombs” you tend to revisit (old stories, old shame, old ways of coping)? What would it look like to step into the newness He's already given you?3. What part of the resurrection story feels most personal or hopeful to you right now? Why does that particular truth land with you?4. If resurrection isn't just Christ's story but ours, what changes about the way you see your identity and daily life? How does “living from Sunday” reshape the way you approach challenges, failures, or fears?+ + + + +Hey, while you're here, please help Generation by clicking the 'Subscribe' button, then click on the BELL
In this episode, Derek and I discuss how emotional immaturity isn't about age—it's about the inability or unwillingness to handle emotions in a healthy, adult way. In relationships, it shows up as patterns that consistently hurt connection, trust, and growth. Many emotionally immature people were raised in homes where emotions were punished, ignored, or explosive—so it feels normal to them. Emotionally immature people often love intensely—but conditionally. The relationship feels passionate and deep… until there's conflict or discomfort. Emotional maturity means two people can feel big things—anger, fear, sadness—and still treat each other with respect and care while working through it.
