The Essential Sai Satcharita
Chapter 16 & 17 - Historical Commentary

In these two combined chapters, a man comes to Baba seeking Brahma Gyan. As the Leela unfolds, Baba plays along with his request, and in the process, shows the man his shortcomings, thereby instructing us on the most important aim of human life. This commentary is a compilation of similar Leelas that give us some more spiritual gems from Baba. Baba had unique ways of imparting knowledge. Sometimes, it was by asking for a specific amount of Dakshina; at other times, through parables or dreams, or through His touch. Mr. Tosher, alias Shri Narayan Ashram, says, “Baba's method of teaching was varied. He would, sometimes, simply touch the head of the devotee with His palm, which would have a certain kind of influence on the devotee. At other times, He pressed His hands on a devotee's head as though he was crushing out some of their lower impulses. On occasion, he would pat the devotee's back, or would pass His palm over their head. Each method had its own effect, affecting the sensations and feelings of the devotee. Apart from touch, He executed an invisible operation on the devotee, whereby He would bring about a great change in him.” This was experienced by Mr. Tosher (in 1913 or 1918), when Baba conveyed (without the use of touch or words) the feeling that differences between various souls, or for that matter, all differences were unreal, and that the only real thing was the Divinity which underlines all. The truth was not uttered in words by Baba before Narayan Ashram. This Leela was taken from the life of Shri Sai Baba, written by Narasimha Swamiji. Khaparde says, in his diary, that during Aarti, Baba gave him mystic glances, and all his questions were answered. At other times, he beat Ram Maruti Bua, who became ecstatic following the beating! Once, Baba lifted Maruti Bua above his head and whirled him around which helped Bua progress to the next stage of his spiritual journey. On Guru Purnima day, devotees placed books at Baba's feet for His blessings. Sometimes, Baba deliberately exchanged books between devotees. Lessons on Dakshina Baba had a uniquely marvellous way of teaching. He often taught His lessons through the amounts He took as Dakshina: 1) Rs. 2 for Nishtha and Saburi (Ref: Sathe and Radhabai Deshmukh, Sai Satcharita Chapters 18 and 19). 2) Rs. 4 often indicated the ego complex, i.e., Manas, Buddhi, Chitta and Ahankar and the need to surrender these at the Guru's feet. 3) Rs. 5 symbolises the senses, i.e. the Indriyas (e.g., The Marwari who demanded quick Brahma Gyan (Sai Satcharita 16 & 17). 4) Rs. 6 refers to the six internal enemies (e.g., Mrs. Tarkhad, Ref: Devotees' Experiences, written by Sri Narasimha Swamiji) 5) Rs. 9 refers to Nav Vidya Bhakti of the Bhakti Marg (e.g., Laxmibai and Anantrao Patankar and the parable of the mare, Sai Satcharita Ch. 42 and 21, respectively.) 6) Rs.15: Giving Dakshina here means deriving les¬sons from the scriptures and lodging them in the heart, where Baba resides. (e.g., Prof. Narke. Ref: Devotees' Experiences, written by Sri Narasimha Swamiji). 7) Rs.16.50: This indicated Sharanagati (i.e., total and complete surren¬der to Baba). Another interesting Leela on Dakshina is of Baba instructing Shyamdas Uddavesh Bua to read the 11 Skanda of Eknath Bhagwat. When Shyamdas went to Shirdi, Baba asked him for 11 rupees every day, and he readily gave this. He did this daily for 10 days. Every day he would go to the Dwarka Mai at about 3.30 in the afternoon, and only at that time would Baba ask for Dakshina. On the 11th day, as usual, Baba asked for Dakshina. Conveying to Baba that he had no money left, Shyamdas told Baba, “You tell me where I am to get the money from? Instead, I offer my 10 Indriyas and mind." To this, Baba replied, "These are already mine! Who are you to give them to me? Go to Bapusaheb Butti and borrow 11 rupees and give them to me." On hearing this, Shyamdas got up to go and get the money. He had hardly reached the gate of the Sabha Mandap, when Baba called out to him, "Arre Shyam, come here, and bring the 11 rupees later, but bring them from Bapusaheb Jog. Now be seated." After taking the Udi and Prasad, he went to the Wada and totally forgot about the 11 rupees. At 3.30 p.m., he went for Darshan, but Baba did not ask for the 11 rupees. In the evening, he said, "Go to Bapusaheb Jog and ask for 11 rupees, and bring him along with you." Shyamdas went to the Wada and found Bapusaheb Jog reading the Eknath Bhagwat to a few devotees. He told Jog what Baba had said. Both of them then went to the Masjid. Baba was getting ready to go out, and seeing them, He blessed them, but did not ask for Dakshina. Later, they returned to the Wada. The other devotees asked Shyamdas about the episode of the 11-rupee Dakshina, and what it meant. Shyamdas had not pondered over it. Thereafter, both of them went to Baba every day, but Baba did not ask for Dakshina. On the fourth day, it was in the evening when Baba asked Jog, "So how man...

Hi guys! I’m back from my break in the Spanish Desert. I went to a European Burning Man Festival Called Nowhere and had a lot of fun building a camp, feeding the build crew lots of high vibe conscious eating food at our camp, as well as teaching yoga, teaching the chakras, discovering awe inspiring creative projects and connecting with like minded people. I also lost my voice for 5 days because of the tremendous amount of dust and wind storms, so if my voice sounds a little off to you today, that’s why.  I drove to Paris from Spain yesterday where I’ll be practicing some yoga , and maybe catching some interviews for the show, before I head back to Spain to attend the Yoga Conference in Barcelona where I hope to get some interviews as well. If you guys want to follow my yomad (as in yoga nomad) travel adventures, you can find me on instagram at Visionary Lifestyle Guide and of course the IG for the show at Visionary Lifestyle Podcast. Today’s guest is Jules Febre. Jules Febre was born and raised in a section of New York City known as the Lower East Side. At the age of 13, Jules spent three months in India; two of which were spent in Mysore studying Ashtanga Yoga with Sri. K. Pattabhi Jois. During that time he was invited to share satsang with Swami Nirmalananda and Shyam Das, two radical yogis that have each contributed greatly to the progression of yoga in the West. At the age of 16 Jules began working at the Jivamukti Yoga School helping to clean, and is now considered one of the leading teachers of the Jivamukti Yoga method, teaching the method world wide as well as facilitating at the very highly regarded teacher training programs. Jules travels and teaches for a major part of each year, including Europe, Australia, Asia, and more. He is grateful to his teachers, Sharonji (Gannon), Davidji (Life) who he has had the privilege of studying with for over 15 years, for igniting his devotion to the Jivamukti Yoga practice and for inspiring countless students around the world. I met Jules in India where he was teaching at the International Yoga festival in Rishikesh, where we recorded this interview in a garden at the Parmarth Niketan Ashram. Jules is a bit different than most of the yoga teachers I’ve met. He has a wicked sense of humor, that he brings into his classes, and he’s clearly very well studied and only when he speaks do you realize his tremendous depth. In this interview we discuss the 5 Tenants of Jivamukti Yoga, the yogic perspective on Veganism, his experience Teaching in Correctional Facilities Yoga Beyond the 8 Limbs, the importance of Planting Seeds, and Jules gives us a deep explanation of what it means to live the first tenant of yoga, Ahimsa. My dear friend, brother, teacher and all around inspiration Govind Das stops by the kitchen table to talk with me about what yoga means in a 21st Century application, the path of bhakti, how to combat the Maya, embracing ones dharma and finding compassion in these troubling times. Govind Das is truly one of the great American yoga teachers and you should check out his classes and offerings whenever possible. INTRO TOPIC - my confusion around the new age community and the recent police brutality events. Govind Das first came to yoga while living in Los Angeles in 1994 because of health concerns- specifically ulcerative colitis/crohn's/inflammatory bowel disease... After years of many different practices with the intention of healing(hatha yoga, ayurveda, buddhist meditation etc), Ira Rosen found his yogic "home' in the path of Bhakti Yoga... the aspect of yoga frequently described as the "yoga of the heart" or "the yoga of love and devotion". Not by avoiding or denying our life and health challenges, but only by accepting and courageously moving through and forward, the flower of our full appreciation and devotion to Life blooms. It is in this tradition of "Bhakti/Devotion" where Ira was given his spiritual name- Govind Das or simply "Govindas" which means "servant of the Divine"... This path of service is at the root of his spiritual life- to serve the Love and Spirit that lives in the hearts of all. His journey has led him to India on 5 different occasions to immerse himself in the ways of the yoga tradition at the Ashram of his "Guru" or main spirtual teacher- Neem Karoli Baba, as well as spending time in holy yogic places like Vrindavan, Varanasi, Rishikesh and many more... Through his journeys to the "motherland of yoga"- India, Govindas has been blessed to enjoy the "darshan" or be in the company of many yogic saints, sadhus, and wise teachers- It is from these transmissions that Govindas shares the authenticity of the Bhakti path... As well Govindas would like to express heartfelt gratitude to his yoga teachers here in California - Bryan Kest, Saul David Raye, Shiva Rea, and Mark Whitwell... and bow to his Bhakti and Kirtan teachers Ram Dass, Jai Uttal, Bhagavan Das, Krishna Das, Shyam Das, Raghu Markusand many many more... www.bhaktiyogashala.com

This podcast with our dear friend Shyam Das which was scheduled for broadcast today January 22, 2013 tragically coincided with his passing in a motorcycle accident in India three days ago. There are simply no adequate words to describe this loss to all of us. Master chanter, brilliant Krishna scholar, Shyamdas was globally revered, but much more importantly, he was loved for his delightful and friendly ways, his sparkling humorand his seamless, astonishing devotion to the ancient tradition of the ways of love for the Hindu facsimile of the Manifest Divine, Krishna and Radha. Synchronistically, this podcast features a conversation we did with him just before he left for India for the last, fateful time.
