Gather around my dear children, I have a super cool episode for you... Meet Sharon Gannon, artist, dancer, musician, poet, activist, and founder of Jivamukti Yoga which teaches compassion for all living beings. She is the author of over 14 books, she's created a global yoga practice as a means to unite, she strives daily to be closer to God, and every day she lives her life to uplift others. In this episode Sharon tells us about her past as an artist, her transition to veganism, and her desire to create lasting positive change in the world. Most of us think of yoga as a workout but in this episode we discover it is so much more.

“Sometimes I wish it was back in it's little corner where no one gave a toss about it” SG Episode 84: Keeping it real in an industrial yoga complex world with Stewart Gilchrist and Mick Barnes This episode is without a doubt the closest to my heart, as my two main teachers who I love dearly came together in one (zoom) room! CHECK THIS OUT! It's a legendary one! Stewart Gilchrist and Mick Barnes both Senior Yoga Teachers (teaching for over 15 and 20 years) and true legends. We speak about how CAPITALISM IS DESTROYING YOGA! How they both navigate in a world of teacher training, Lulu Lemon world and retreats. Swimming against the tide. Or as Stew says swimming against a huge tsunami. They explain WHAT YOGA IS AND WHAT YOGA ISN'T! . It's an incredible unique, authentic and pure hearted episode sharing the ultimate truth and core of what yoga is or at least should be….. and even if you aren't into yoga, these two will entertain you and open up your eyes and inspire you in many ways! Those are yogas. The other ones aren't, they are businesses, just in it to make a profit. They are made up, without any scriptural history. YOGS ENDS SUFFERING: STEW: I think about quitting everyday. But then I think about how many people are suffering in this world and I suffered badly before I found yoga. I suffered every singe day and I made others suffer. And the one thing that helped me was yoga. So if I can show people that helped me with my suffering I can alleviate some of that suffering for them. That is what keeps me going. That stops me from quitting every single day. YOU CAN'T DO YOGA ON A COMPUTER: MICK: After Covid we got left with the phenomenon that is now Zoom. That has been the most challenging. Our little shala has never recovered, we lost some people because they lost their discipline and now we are still up against the Zoom and it sickened me. It sucked the life out of me, this capitalist marketing, people getting rich with setting up cameras all over gyms and yoga schools, but you can't do yoga on a computer, a big part of the practice is the effort it takes to get to the shala. It's been very hard for me. JUST KEEP GOING: Stew to Mick: Hang in there, you're doing the right thing. I get frustrated and angry with it too, just keep doing what you're doing. What you're doing is fine, it's almost like a separation, you got to separate yourself mentally. You can feel alienated. But you have to keep going….. YOGA IS A SCIENCE: MICK: I believe yoga is a science. If you subscribe to a certain order of practices, processes, being open to being taught, moving from absolute nobody awareness to awareness, its a holistic process, this is so much more than turning a computer on. Teachers need to have these people present, so we can emerge them, teach them, educate them, so they get the full benefit of it. THERE IS AN ORDER FOR EVERYTHING. Give everybody an opportunity to shine be able to teach anyone to practice yoga. You have to start somewhere. IT'S NOT WHERE YOU ARE GOING, IT'S WHERE YOU CAME FROM! MICK: Sharon used to say we are everything there is nothing to get, nothing to gain. And that is exactly it, it's not about where we are going, it's retracing our way back where we came from. (Sharon Gannon, co-founder Jivamukti Yoga) THE EVOLUTION OF THE SPIRIT! MICK: When you get older, you realise it's not really you doing it. That's the practice. The evolution of the spirit, it's not you.

Episode 42 of the podcast is all about How to Feel Infinite Joy and Universal Compassion, Now.There is a guided Meditation Practice, for channeling the higher self, which begins at 1:00:54 The episode is centered around an idea from the legendary yoga teacher Sharon Gannon who said: “You cannot do yoga. Yoga is your natural state. What you can do are exercises which may reveal to you where you are resisting your natural state.”I drilled home Sharon's presupposition that our natural state is bliss, joy or ecstasy - by sharing the meaning behind some of the eternal spiritual teachings. I share several Sanskrit Mantras that are devoted to describing the true nature of all living beings, which establish a connection to reality beyond our familiar ego-personality structure. I then deconstruct the 12th yoga sutra of Master Patanjali, which does three things: 1. It identifies “a busy mind” as the enemy of peace, then offers the remedy (two recommendations) for freeing us from our suffering: 2. Constant Practice, to remove blockages to our natural state3. Non- Attachment, to Non-attachment is not about being a cold or emotionally dead brick wall, instead, it's about learning how to let go of the thoughts and emotions that create suffering. Once we can stop being so attached to our thoughts, we experience tremendous relief, inner peace, and a pervading sense of joyful well-being.This episode was created with the intention of helping our community practice achieving a “spiritual reset” as we close out an old year and prepare for a new one.The Jai Sugrim Method Podcast is sponsored by Commons CBDI use commons cbd daily to reduce exercise induced inflammation, as well as for good sleep. You can order Cannabis Products from Commons with my ambassador link:www.commons.co/with/jsugrimThe Show is also sponsored by WHOOP, your personal digital fitness tracker: Order your whoop strap with Jai's Unique Link:https://join.whoop.com/376818To train with Jai, and learn about his yoga classes and massage therapy treatments:www.jaisugrim.comTo Join The Art of Aging Book Club:https://jaisugrim.com/book-club/To support this podcast go to patreon:patreon.com/jaisugrimEnjoy and share this episode!May it bring You Insight!

In 1969, Swami Vishnudevananda pioneered what has become a life transition ritual for the GenX and Millennial precariat: the Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) Programme. He was a cult leader rapist who thought yoga would help the world understand messages sent by UFOs. Not exactly confidence-inspiring.Not every YTT programme is bad—today's bonus host Matthew has worked in some good ones for over a decade. But on the whole, we're talking about an industry that has graduated up to 500K ppl over 50 years through a pseudo-educational process that has greased the epistemological pipeline towards conspirituality.YTTs are unregulated by any academic or professional consensus. They are driven by the anxious charisma of urban yoga studio entrepreneurs who need to sell big-ticket products to counter the rising overheads of the gentrification they're helping to drive. Their curricula offers a pastiche of uncited resources. They pad contact hours with sermons and meditation sessions. The typical YTT training manual is an unironic postmodern meat-grinder in which Iron Age philosophy and high school anatomy are blended with quotes from Carl Jung and Rumi. As an example, Matthew looks at a Jivamukti Yoga School manual from a 2007 training hosted at Omega Institute.Again: not all YTTs are bad, or lead to QAnon. But the ritual and charismatic pedagogy that most offer has a lot in common with the sacrament of redpilling—albeit more socially acceptable and aspirational. Conspirituality went viral in 2020. It's time to ask whether the YTT industry compromised a culture's immunity to it.Notes:Hello, YogAnon! In 2008 he was introduced to Jivamukti Yoga in a yoga class at a local neighborhood gym in Jersey City New Jersey. As he continued to take Jivamukti classes both locally and at the Jivamukti Yoga School NYC. Austin wanted to learn more about yoga and share with others his life changing experience brought about while practicing the Jivamukti Yoga Method. In 2011, Austin attended the Jivamukti 300+ hour teacher training program at the Omega Institute. In 2012, he continued his studies and completed his 800-hour Jivamukti Teacher Certification at The Jivamukti Yoga School NYC. In 2013, Austin and his partner Bob opened a 3000 square foot Jivamukti Yoga Center in downtown Jersey City, two blocks away from where he took his first Jivamukti yoga class. Austin is extremely grateful to his teachers, Sharon Gannon and David Life. Austin views Gannon and Life as his upa-guru, a teacher who points you in the right direction. Without them Austin would have never had a full understanding of why veganism is so crucial to a yoga practice. While Austin ran the Jivamukti Center in Jersey City he continued to seek deeper teachings outside the Jivamukti method, ones that would offer a deeper understanding of the ancient teaching of yoga from its roots. It was at this point that Shri Yogishri Sudarshan Kannan came into Austin's life as a teacher and Sat-Guru. In 2020, Austin founded the Urban Sadhu Yoga Method, “a method of applying ancient yogic wisdom in a contemporary context.” He and his partner Bob are the co-owners of Urban Sadhu Yoga Shala, formally Jivamukti Yoga Center Jersey City. She always does this with a healthy dose of her Brit wit and sensibility! She teaches weekly at her LA studio Rising Lotus Yoga, as well as trainings and conferences. Her journey begin when she was fortunate enough to stumble into the beginning of the western Yoga revolution in New York city in the early 90s. The east village was still known as Alphabet City and it was here she found her healing and passion for Yoga at the Jivamukti Yoga Center. A deeply spiritual center led by Sharon Gannon and David Life who were intimidating, wild and incredibly uncompromising in their conviction that Yoga was a path to Self-Realization. She moved to Los Angeles in 2001 where she continued her practice and trained with some of the best teachers in the world including an apprenticeship with Senior Iyengar teacher Lisa Walford. This training along with other studies informed her vinyasa flow style with a deep love of alignment and functional movement, that if yoga is about relationships then building a more healthy and sustainable and joyful one with the body and movement can lead to a deeper inquiry into the self. In April 2006 she opened and co-founded Rising Lotus Yoga, a busy and thriving studio in Los Angeles, attracting practitioners seeking alignment based Vinyasa Yoga classes with healthy doses of dharma talks, chanting and joyful community. In 2008 she created the popular Rising Lotus Teacher Training Program, along with Daniel Stewart,  which teaches trainees how to bring intelligent alignment and sequencing to students as well as bringing real meaning back to the yoga practice with dharma talks, self-reflection and a commitment to stay constantly curious to the path of becoming a teacher of yoga, which ultimately is a teacher of the heart. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/agethoughtfully/support

Jeffrey's yoga journey started in 2007, after graduating from Berklee College of Music. At the time he couldn't afford to attend daily yoga classes, but the practice was such an emotional healing bomb for him that he learned on his own from DVDs, YouTube and attending one community class each week at his local yoga studio. Jeffrey moved to New York in 2009 and began practicing at Jivamukti Yoga School. In 2011 he completed the 300hr Jivamukti Yoga Certification, respectfully thanking Sharon Gannon and David Life for making that possible and continued on to complete the 500hr Jivamukti apprenticeship that same year. He began practicing Ashtanga Yoga on his own in 2012 and in 2014 I found his teacher, Guy Donahaye (director of the Ashtanga Yoga Shala NYC). YOGA BUSINESS series Part 1 Austin- Urban Sadhu .“Yoga business isn’t yoga”- David Life .We start our exploration with these wise words of my teacher and co founder of the Jivamukti Yoga method David Life. Yoga and business how do they go together and do they even go together? We live in a capitalist society, so in modern yoga, in this modern world we respond to that society in a capitalist way, but where is the bhakti in that? This and a lot more is up for discussion with three amazing beings. Austin from Urban Sadhu in New Jersey, Clare from Jivamukti Yoga Bern and Nora from India. This first episode is with Austin. We discuss seeing money as energy (shakti) running a yoga studio, his method, social issues he wants to tackle through the means of yoga like race, gender, gender identity, reproductive right, the social structure of capitalism and more. LINK IN BIO! .I personally have had some issues with the whole yoga brand thing, especially also within the method I teach, I personally feel that the “branding” part, the making money part can stand in the way of the actual teaching part, as in, I just want to teach a method and not sell a brand, or feel that I am being sold as part of that brand, so I focus on the teaching, the students, the blessings received from the founders of the method and everyday I live my yoga. So these series mean a lot to me, exploring the different ways of looking at Yoga Business, I have learned so much and I know you will too, and this is just as valuable and resonant for those who aren’t yoga teachers or students. .ENJOY! LISTEN! SHARE! LEAVE A REVIEW! It is much appreciated. .Austin worked for twenty-two years as a designer in the American theater. In 2008 he was introduced to Jivamukti Yoga in Jersey City, New Jersey. In 2011 Austin attended the Jivamukti 300+ hour teacher training program at the Omega Institute. Harmony and Russell are at heart amateur archivists of the emerging yoga punk scene that grew up in the heart of Generation X. For us Lisa Schrempp embodies everything that is cool about how we did things. Angry, disaffected, latchkey kids, having to make dinner by ourselves; we made everything in our world by hand because no one else was around. That's punk. And that is Lisa Schrempp to a T. Lisa was a 17 year old human gazelle and modern dancer in Chicago. She received a scholarship to dance with the Alvin Ailey dance company, so she left Chicago and took off to the East Village Alphabet city (Needle Village), finding odd jobs, like working as a bartender, to help pay the bills. She didn't take any shit and partied hard -- living the way she wanted. Eventually, she found her way to a 10 AM yoga class, (although 10 AM was a little early for her) and found herself practicing next a couple of sincere seekers: David Life and Sharon Gannon. Through her journey of over 35 years, in the ancient sciences of yoga and Ayurveda, Lisa found what she was searching for all along. “If I'm prepared for the world, I can be a healing balm.” - Lisa Schrempp Lisa walks us through her NY story and so much more in our podcast called “Can't Cheat Karma.” Hear her thoughts on Gurus, Cancel Culture, Yoga Scandals, and the importance of the weekly oil bath, she weaves a beautiful lesson of how we each have our own Karma to live out and how it effects our behaviors, but also gives us agency in the world to change our actions. Yantras: The Creative Self & Its Expression

A Quest for Well-Being

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 25, 2020 54:02

Creating Yantras is a traditional spiritual practice that, just like yoga and meditation, leads you to the source, to a feeling of contentment. Yantras were originally conceived over four thousand years ago in the northern regions of India. A mystical experience, a centering, comes from a meditative practice that has a spiritual focal point. Creating Yantras is a particularly powerful spiritual practice that enables you to connect your essential creative self with its expression. Working with these designs has become part of contemporary stress-reduction practices brought to us from the East along with yoga and Eastern philosophies. Sacred Yantras are made up of the following components: the bhupur (outline); circle; petals; triangle, six-pointed star, or square; and bindu (central dot). Most of these shapes are purely geometrical and relate to the cosmic laws of sacred geometry. Sacred geometry is a pre-linguistic form of communicating through basic archetypal symbols that has been used in various forms throughout civilization. It is the shapes' placement on the Yantra, centrally around the bindu, that gives the forms a magnetic charge. The elements are placed to bring your eyes from the outside to the center, mirroring the spiritual practice of harnessing the mind from its wandering tendencies to rest upon the object of perception and bring you to rest peacefully at the center of your being. The only purely non-geometric form used in the Yantras is the petal. This form is thought of as the lotus petal directing your gaze inward to the center. The petal directs the lower mind to the higher mind or consciousness. Drawing the petals freehand (with the help of the semicircular guide) can bring a feeling of connecting your personality with the Yantra. The freeform of the petals is juxtaposed with the more structural universality of the geometric shapes. This merging of natural shapes with the strictly geometric forms is a beautiful aspect of the Yantra. One of the key teachers in bringing this knowledge to the West was Sarah Tomlinson's teacher, the late, great Sri Harish Johari, see further reading for his and other notable teachers in this century. Today the practice of Yantra Painting is done mostly in the confines of one's own home as a devotional puja, an offering to a deity, to bring healing and good fortune to one's family and home. It is, largely thanks to the students of Harish Johari also becoming taught and practiced in yoga centers throughout Europe and the USA allowing this ancient art to be incorporated into the many flourishing western spiritual practices.  — In this episode, Valeria interviews Sarah Tomlinson the author of Nine Designs for Inner Peace: The Ultimate Guide to Meditating with Color, Shape, and Sound And Yantra Bliss Oracle Deck Sarah Tomlinson is an internationally acclaimed Yantrika (Yantra teacher and practitioner), yoga teacher and artist, with renowned fans across the globe including Elena Brower and Sharon Gannon, co-founder of Jivamukti Yoga. Sarah worked extensively with her mentor Harish Johari in India, he initiated her into the spiritual practice of painting Yantras. Sarah is the author of Coloring Yantras, (Shambhala Publications, 2017), Nine Designs for Inner Peace, (Destiny Publishing, 2008) and creator of the Yantra Bliss Oracle Deck, (2017). This is a dynamic Jivamukti Open level class, the asana is oriented around hip opening, we do a lot of prep for padmasana (lotus) and we bring in some balance with lift to the tip-toes, Ardha Baddha Padma Padangusthasana! the class is inspired by these words from Sharon Gannon's focus of the month:When someone is enraptured by prema that love for the divine, that mood or bhava, overflows into love for all beings. In Sanskrit, this is called sarvatmabhava and it is what allows the person to become released from the clutches of avidya. When avidya lifts, the jiva understands that they are not their body or mind, this comprehension, instead of increasing self-importance makes one more humble. Humility is a winning ticket for the soul who yearns for yoga—for enlightenment.

Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior is a classic Jivamukti Yoga sequence. It was taught to me by my yoga teachers Sharon Gannon and David Life. "This is a brisk, guided, led vinyasa class in which the teacher calls out the asanas and provides the breath count, but gives minimal instruction as to how to do the various asanas. The class offers a well-rounded practice as a set sequence that includes a warm-up, the setting of an elevated intention, chanting, surya namaskar, standing asanas, twists, balances, backward bending, forward bending and inversions, as well as meditation and relaxation, and is designed to be completed in one hour. Thus, it is suitable for those who have limited time to devote to a yoga practice, for those who are looking for a workout to “shape up” physically, and for those who are looking to include a robust asana practice in a manageable daily routine. Because it is a fixed sequence that is always the same, a student has the opportunity to progress to the level of mastery by committing to a consistent, steady, regular sadhana." ~ Sharon Gannon, David Life. The first few classes may seem overwhelming, but with time and steady practice, progress will inevitably come. The Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior 1-hour sequence is a comprehensive yoga class that transforms, invigorates and energizes, while at the same time grounding and leading the student inward on an exploration of the deeper spiritual aspects of the self. ~ www.jivamuktiyoga.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bruceyogi/message

At a very young age, Mary learned that the food on her plate was actually the body of a dead animal. She refused to eat it and declared herself a vegetarian. She grew up never knowing another vegetarian and thinking that she was weird. When she grew older and learned that animals were hurt to produce dairy products and eggs, she went Vegan.Yoga showed up many years later. As her practice developed she felt the call to teach but even louder was the call to teach veganism. During her 500-hour teacher training, she was given the task of presenting to the class an aspect of yoga that was “in her pocket." She knew that she had to do a talk on Veganism but in the past any time she started to talk about the animals she’d get a huge lump in her throat and shut down. She had just started working with a teacher named Ramana who helped her find her voice. For her talk, she used Sharon Gannon’s book ”Yoga and Vegetarianism” as the blueprint. She started teaching for a studio, Breathe Yoga as well as being hired by Dr. Ted Barnett to teach at Rochester Lifestyle Medicine, where she learned the health benefits of a vegan diet from some of the best doctors in the world. She also had the opportunity to teach for Dr. Thomas Campbell in his lifestyle medicine practice.Mary was elected Vice President of a local animal rights nonprofit for three years, co-founded Rochester’s wildly popular VegFest, and founded our local chapter of Anonymous for the Voiceless, a nonprofit that brings the terrible truth of animal suffering to people on the street. One fateful day, Mary came across a news story about a cow who had escaped a slaughterhouse who was now living at a sanctuary in New Jersey. A few months later she traveled to NJ to meet that cow, Freddie and Mike Stura, the man who rescued him. Freddie inspired her to design a T-shirt with his image. When she opened the Rochester Vegan Community Center his handsome face was their logo. A couple of years ago Mike asked her to move to Skylands. She did and now helps take care of Freddie and the other kids that live at the sanctuary. In this episode YIV's Holly Skodis & Julie Kirkpatrick discuss:• Jivamukti Yoga and it's inclusion of veganism• Insights that Julie has learned from Sharon Gannon & David Life• How to approach veganism with yoga studentsAre you intrigued by yoga? Are you interested not only in the physical practices of yoga, but also by the philosophy and history? Do you want to learn more and go to a deeper level with your yoga practice? Perhaps you have been a practitioner for many years, but never seem to quench your “yoga thirst”? If any of those statements apply to you, then you share something in common with Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher, Julie Kirkpatrick, who is also searching for deeper meaning of life through a deeper understanding of yoga and how it can help modern people live a meaningful life in troubling times. The founders of the Jivamukti Yoga method, Sharon Gannon and David Life, granted Julie the Advanced Jivamukti Yoga Teacher certification in 2005. David Life is Julie's brother, so the method has been accessible to her since its inception in 1986. Julie has been and continues to be a student of the method and a seeker of understanding of yoga, since that time. She completed her 300 hr. training in 2003, and her 800 hr. training in 2004. Her association with Jivamukti Yoga has allowed her to teach classes, workshops, and retreats abroad in Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, Spain, Turkey, Canada, and Vietnam, as well as in the United States in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Michigan, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana, and Ohio. Julie brings to her yoga classes a wide range of experience, having taught a variety of class styles including open, basic, vinyasa, prenatal, children’s yoga, and restorative classes. She strives to bring together practitioners through a sense of community with each other, for really, there is nothing more valuable in yoga then coming together as a community of spiritually minded truth seekers, which happens every time we gather together to practice yoga. Julie strives to uphold this vision. Before focusing full time on teaching yoga, Julie worked in public education, visual arts, and community gardening. She was an activist for fair housing and community garden preservation on the Lower East Side of New York City, where she has lived with her children Jules and Alex Febre since 1981.Connect with Julie:Facebook: @julie.kirkpatrick.58Instagram: @juliefrancine1 Listen & Subscribe

How did yoga become so popular in America? One of the epicenters where the transformation took place was Jivamukti Yoga Center in New York's East Village. Ken talks with Jivamukti co-founder and legendary teacher Sharon Gannon about how she wedded rigorous asanas with Sanskrit chanting and meditation, presented it as a complete philosophy grounded in Eastern mysticism, and somehow, improbably, made yoga hip. People showed up in droves, as did celebrities like Madonna, Sting, Willem Defoe and Donna Karan. Today Jivamukti Yoga centers are in major cities around the world, and its influence is felt deeply. Sharon Gannon is a musician, an animal rights/vegan activist, and the author of several books, including her latest, The Magic Ten and Beyond: Daily Spiritual Practice for Greater Peace and Well-Being. In our conversation, she talks about what drew her to yoga, and what led to the creation of the Jivamukti method. I truly hope you’re enjoying the show and sharing it with those you think could benefit from it! Today’s guest is yoga legend Sharon Gannon. Sharon is a 21st-century Renaissance woman, an animal rights and vegan activist and a world-renowned yogini, perhaps best known as the founder, along with David Life, of the Jivamukti Yoga Method. She is also an accomplished writer, dancer, painter, musician and chef. Sharon has devoted many years exploring the role of diet in promoting physical, emotional and mental well-being as well as spiritual development. She lives in a 125-acre wild forest sanctuary in Woodstock, NY. She is a pioneer in teaching yoga as spiritual activism and is credited for making yoga cool and hip—relating ancient teachings of yoga to the modern world. Sharon's book Yoga and Vegetarianism has been called the "seminal" work on the subject, exploring the relationship of veganism to the teachings of yoga. Sharon is a also a musician and is a featured vocalist on many CDs.She has produced numerous yoga-related DVDs and is the author of several books on yoga. Her latest offering is Simple Recipes for Joy: More than 200 Delicious Vegan Recipes, a beautifully illustrated cookbook with recipes that are featured in the Jivamuktea Café in NYC. Sharon's writing has also appeared in numerous publications. I met Sharon at The International Yoga Day at the United Nations in New York last year, where she was teaching a class. I was moved by many of the words she shared, so I caught up with her a few days later at the Jivamukti school near Union Square, that she founded with her husband David Life. We talked yoga and she spelled out the ideal yogi diet.  Sharon has a fresh take on the subject, really breaking it down from a yogic perspective. I learned so much in this conversation, and I hope you do too. I urge you to read her book Yoga and Vegetarianism as a follow up to listening to this show. If you consider yourself a yogi or on the yogic path at all, I’d say this is required reading. On this week’s podcast, New York Times Best-selling author and striving Yogi, Karan Bajaj, shares how sabbaticals, vipassana meditation, and living in his dharma has helped him create more power, clarity, and purpose in his life and for millions of readers. The Purpose Driven Life The sad reality is that only one out of every three Americans are now reported to be very happy. It's no surprise that on the wrong road, we can find ourselves feeling disconnected from our passion, discontent with where we are, and craving a shift towards a more purpose driven life. In our journey, we may do many things to find purpose again including changing jobs or in finding temporary satisfactions through "weapons of mass distractions," like alcohol, food, and even the wrong relationships. To find a purpose driven life however, Karan plants the seed of thought that what we may need to do is simply create the time to focus on what we truly desire through yoga, meditation, and sabbaticals. To be able to feel more content with yourself and where you are in life, Karan guides us to the focus of stripping away your emotional materialism. How to Strip Yourself of Emotional Materialism Emotional materialism is defined by Karan as “constantly wanting to become something or someone better.” A person who focuses on emotional materialism is someone who is incessantly looking for growth within jobs, social circles, and experiences in order to become “someone better,” all without ever feeling good about where they are. They believe that once they have become that "better person" or achieved something bigger, only then will they be truly happy.  This however is the exact opposite of how to become content with who we truly are. After we strip ourselves of emotional materialism, we become more selfless. After we become more selfless, we can see ourselves as the best medium for carrying out our work; the magic of contentment is that it doesn’t even matter if that work fails. To a Yogi, the most important thing is that they are a vessel that carries out their work. But how do we begin this process of changing our mindset and not focus on becoming something else, but on who we are right now? How can we truly strip ourselves of emotional materialism and become selfless? Karan suggests three powerful steps: Learn, Reflect, and Meditate. To be content, you must do all three consistently over time. In order to allow ourselves to simply just “be,” we get to learn through secondary resources such as books and people, reflect on those learnings, and finally experience what we have learned through meditation. Finding Contentment in Your Life It is obvious that if you are consumed with negative thoughts about where you are, then you won't be able to lead a life of happiness. Many people believe that true contentment is found in reaching the "moment" from when they get from Point A to Point B. Ironically, their current purpose might just be where they currently are right now; between Point A and Point B. "Instead of focusing on how to get from Point A to Point B, you must pause for a moment to give yourself the space to help you feel content with yourself, which will lead you to find your purpose." - Karan Bajaj If you rush yourself and forget to learn, reflect, and meditate, you won’t be able to take the powerful moment to pause for thoughts such as, “I am what I am. I’m where I’m currently at in life, and I’m going to be the best me that I can be.” Karan teaches to not rush life, and rather take it one day at a time to see where it can lead you. How To Prepare For A Sabbatical or Meditation Retreat In the process of Karan living out his dharma, he realized that he didn’t need to spend time following radical goals, but rather to enjoy "being" and discovering his true path through meditation. To help do this, Karan has taken two, one year long sabbaticals. He calls this the 4-1-4 rule.  Work for 4 years diligently, take one year off, then return for 4 more years. However, not everyone can take an entire year away from their work, family, and life to spend on reflecting and meditating. Some people follow a 7 -1-7 rule by working 7 weeks and then taking a week off. Karan also suggests taking short, meaningful vacations by spending time in new environment or doing a 10-day meditation retreat. By letting everything familiar go on a sabbatical, you get to dissolve your habits and cyclical thinking so that you can start anew again on your return. The only true prerequisite for a meditation retreat is that you welcome it with an open mind and have an acceptance for you and those around you. You may be thinking that doing a sabbatical or meditation retreat such as Vipassana can be a scary experience. You may even question whether or not it will be easy for you to let go of society's conditioning and commit yourself to focusing on meditation for so many days. These worries are very common for people who are new to meditation retreats, but embracing this fear and going through the threshold can be a life-changing experience. In this episode Robert A.F. Thurman discusses the meditation practices of the mindful revolution from a Buddhist perspective. He discusses its influence on the mind and some different ways it can be practiced: you can count your breath or you can say your mantra. When your mind wanders, you bring it back to the main focus and you disassociate yourself from distracting thoughts. In this way, you gain more control over your reactions and learn to develop a higher concentration. “Why Be Mindful” Episode 54 of the Bob Thurman podcast is an excerpt from the lecture “Igniting the Bliss Within,” given at Jivamukti Yoga Tribe Gathering in New York City, on January 4, 2016. Prayer is our most universal and individual way of communicating with the Divine, of connecting with the infinite dimension of our being. Drishti Point Yoga and Spirituality

As a path to enlightenment through compassion for all beings, Jivamukti Yoga is grounded in the original meaning of the Sanskrit word asana as “seat, connection” – relationship to the Earth. Earth implies all of life. Citing Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, which states that asana should be sthira and sukham, Jivamukti Yoga maintains that one’s relationship to others (asana) should be mutually beneficial and come from a consistent (sthira) place of joy and happiness (sukham). This is a radical idea that, when put into practice, can dismantle our present culture, which is based on the notion that the Earth and all other animals exist for our benefit and to be exploited for our own selfish purposes. So the practice of asana becomes more than mere physical exercise to keep one’s body fit or to increase strength or flexibility; it becomes a way to improve one’s relationship to all others and thus lead to enlightenment – the dissolution of the sense of separateness, the realization of the oneness of being, the discovery of lasting happiness. Listen to a Drishti Point Yoga Podcast with Jivamukti co-Founder, Sharon Gannon. Sharon speaks about Jivamukti Yoga, compassion for all beings, devotion to God, and her own Sadhana that is woven into all that she does.

In this simple way, we can all become socially engaged. Sharon Gannon encourages us to write one letter a week. This is destined to be a Vegan Radio classic. Derek threads the story of his move to New Orleans through interviews with his yoga teachers and recordings of the Kirtan chanting featured at the beginning of the classes. Derek has been studying Jivamukti Yoga which was founded by vegans Sharon Gannon and David Life and taught at the Swan River studios in New Orleans. The featured interview is with Libby Bryan, a vegan instructor at the school, who offers insight into the connections between veganism and yoga and the Sanskrit word Ahimsa, that means "to do no harm". Much of the featured Kirtan is centered around the chant "Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu", which translates to "May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all." From Derek's personal journey to the universal wisdom of yoga and compassion, this podcast captures something transcendent and beautiful, and perhaps often overlooked in the modern struggle for the liberation of animals.
