From the ethical and personal observances of Yama and Niyama, respectively, to the physical aspects of Asana, the breath control of Pranayama, and the mental focus of Dharana. I'm back with Chapter 2 of the Bhagavad Gita! This is so dense I had to split it into two parts. Today we'll discuss verses 1-38. This chapter serves as a foundation for understanding the eternal nature of the soul (Atman) and the importance of non-attachment in the face of life's challenges. Let's look at Arjuna's emotional turmoil and Krishna's tough love approach, emphasizing the need for inner stability and the acceptance of life's transient nature. The emphasis on the immortality of the soul, the significance of understanding one's Dharma, and the win-win perspective in life. This chapter literally has all of Krishna's essential teachings. Making it a gold mine. Get ready to learn from the original life coach (Krishna):

More than ever our work as yoga teachers is challenging and important. We don't want to be like this lady, right? Trying to sell people something they don't need while their house burns down? People need yoga, but they need the kind of yoga that supports awareness, connection and care (which could mean lots of different things for different students and teachers!). People do not need the kind of yoga that encourages disconnection and shutting down.  Over the last two months we've been exploring how to address current events in your yoga classes, first wth a solo episode: Should You Talk About Current Events In Yoga Classes?? ... and then I looped my friend Hari-Kirtana into the conversation and he shared How To Give a Dharma Talk When The World Is On Fire.  And today we are diving into Part 2, What The Teachings Say About Current Events with Hari-kirtana Das (PART 2)! In this episode, you'll hear: how to make the connections between current events and yoga philosophy what are "the teachings?" ...an observation of the range of yoga wisdom traditions to draw from what does yoga epistemology (pramana) say  what do yoga's core principles / ethics / values say advice for Red State yoga teachers examples of on the spot created dharma talks based on actual current events Hari-kirtana das (he/him)  is a yoga teacher, spiritual mentor, and the author of two books on yoga philosophy: Journey Into the Bhagavad Gita: A Guide to Exploring Timeless Principles of Transcendental Knowledge and Integrating Them Into Your Life and In Search of the Highest Truth: Adventures in Yoga Philosophy.  Hari has been practicing devotional and other yogic disciplines for over 40 years, has lived in yoga ashrams and intentional spiritual communities, worked for Fortune 500 companies and Silicon Valley start-ups, and brings a wide range of spiritual knowledge and life experience to his classes, workshops, and presentations. You don't me to tell you that the world as we know it is burning to the ground. This makes teaching yoga hard, important and strange. A few episodes back I answered the question, “Should we talk about current events in our yoga classes?” By essentially saying, “maybe… but most likely YES.” In that episode I talked about how important it was to have an understanding and point of view about what the yoga teachings would say about current events. I received a ton of great feedback about that episode, and also a lot of questions. So we are diving deeper into those questions with my friend Hari-Kirtana Das.  Hari-kirtana das (he/him)  is a yoga teacher, spiritual mentor, and the author of two books on yoga philosophy: Journey Into the Bhagavad Gita: A Guide to Exploring Timeless Principles of Transcendental Knowledge and Integrating Them Into Your Life and In Search of the Highest Truth: Adventures in Yoga Philosophy. He's on the faculty of numerous Yoga Teacher Training programs, offers live online workshops and courses throughout the year, and his mission is to illuminate the many ways in which the yoga wisdom tradition can guide us toward meaningfully transformative spiritual experiences. In this episode, you'll hear: why it makes sense for yoga teachers to talk about current events and politics in class how  teachers can start to make the connections between current events and yoga philosophy Hari's formula for delivering a great dharma talk ideas to help teachers integrate philosophy into asana class And stay tuned for Part 2 of this conversation coming soon! A decade-lius later, as a young New Yorker during the hey day of late 70s and early 80s, his spiritual awakening started to root while zig-zagging and chanting mantras on foot across Manhattan as courier – a foreshadowing of his true calling as one who delivers ancient philosophy packed in contemporary wisdom, and evolved into a bhakti practice, and his eventual discovery of a Hare Krishna temple.Connect with Hari✩ Website: https://hari-kirtana.com/✩ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hari.kirtana/✩ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Harikirtanadas✩ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/harikirtana✩ Free Chapter of Journey Into the Bhagavad gita: https://bit.ly/3EqUNyt✩ Journey Into the Bhagavad-gita: A Guide to Exploring Timeless Principles of Transcendental Knowledge and Integrating Them Into Your Life by Hari-Kirtana Das: https://amzn.to/3QBcOwr✩ In Search of the Highest Truth: Adventures in Yoga Philosophy by Hari-Kirtana Das: https://amzn.to/3GrwQYrSupport and stay connected with the GTY community✩ Website: https://www.gtypodcast.com/✩ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/gtypodcast/✩ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@guystalkingyogapodcast✩ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/guystalkingyogaCheck out Yoga For Dudes with Larry✩ Website: https://www.yogafordudes.com/✩ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@UC4yM9Mv-q7fA8VKBEyzt27A

An eighteen chapter dialogue between Krishna and the warrior Arjuna, the Bhagavad Gita is a story about following your dharma and being fearless in the face of life's many challenges, by recognizing your essential nature and call to duty.Additionally, the conversation touches on how individuals can find their unique paths in yoga, especially during times of identity crisis, to become fearless in the face of uncertainty. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 395: Anticolonial Philosophy & Yoga with Shyam Ranganathan   Description: Yoga philosophy can sometimes feel overwhelming, inapplicable to the modern problems we face today, or just too abstract. Dr. Shyam Ranganathan, a repeat guest on the podcast, has a gift for breaking philosophy down in a way that we can relate to.   Dr. Shyam Ranganathan is a philosopher, author, researcher, and leading voice in anti-colonial philosophy, as well as the founder of the Yoga Philosophy Institute. He specializes in the study and translation of philosophy, especially South Asian philosophy and Yoga. In his recent book, Yoga — AntiColonial Philosophy, Shyam explores yoga as a decolonial tradition and how we can reconnect to that legacy in our modern practice.   In this episode, Shyam explains how colonialism shows up even in yoga philosophy, and how we can apply the practice of yoga and yoga philosophy to the many social justice issues we face in the world. He shares more about Ishvara Pranidhana (devotion to sovereignty), samskaras (rituals and practices), and how we might apply them to our daily lives to take back agency and practice yogic behavior. Tune into this conversation if you are seeking to be inspired by how philosophy can be a tool for liberation.   Key Takeaways: [2:04] Shannon gives a shout-out to sponsor, OfferingTree. [3:08] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Dr. Shyam Ranganathan. [6:20] What does Shyam do and who does he do it for? [8:06] How did Shyam choose the title of his book, Yoga — AntiColonial Philosophy? [9:27] Why is it that yoga philosophy does not often give a platform to the voices of South Asian yoga teachers and authors? [13:35] Shyam reflects on how education is not really about learning but about training people to follow instructions. [16:39] How does the practice of yoga and yoga philosophy apply to the many social justice issues we are facing in the world? [21:40] Shyam explains the concept of Ishvara Pranidhana (devotion to sovereignty) in more concrete terms with some examples.  [24:19] What is the practice to get out of being stuck in our own prejudices? [26:23] What are samskaras in yoga and how do they affect us? [29:55] Shyam shares how we can take back and redeploy our agency instead of getting stuck in loops and patterns. [31:58] Shannon pops in to give a shout-out of thanks to OfferingTree. [33:25] Simply practicing yoga is the easiest way to disrupt the harm of colonialism. [34:47] Shannon and Shyam discuss how challenging certain laws may be a part of resisting colonialism and is yogic behavior. [39:47] Shyam explains what he means by "the real philosophical practice is what one does where one already is in relationship to the people that are already in one's life." [44:51] What is a practice that can be a first baby step for someone who has not explored much of yoga philosophy? [46:57] What might the first moment of conscious thought look like when we are showing up as an ally for ourselves? Shyam talks about what the practice of yoga can look like in our daily lives. [51:31] Shannon and Shyam discuss the future of (de)colonization. [57:35] Shannon and Shyam chat about how he felt writing the book and how Shannon felt reading it. It's geared to getting us to follow instructions."   "Every kind of bigotry or small-mindedness is part of just not being free from those past experiences."   "What happens is we don't see our agency when we're in these patterns and loops because our agency is hidden by these patterns, but our agency is what's powering it. So we have to find a way to redeploy our agency."   "You can't be working on your autonomy and also being colonized at the same time."

The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Audible.com: https://n9.cl/umiag Yoga Philosophy An Outline of the Secret Hindu Teachings By Hereward Carrington Narrated by Lori Nadeau Richardson Carrington presents a fairly deeply detailed look at understanding the 8 limbs of Yoga. Originally published in 1923 as a Westerner's perspective and understanding of the practice Yoga, Carrington reveals a surprising depth of understanding as that of an adept, and manages to impart a lot of information, similar in that way that several more recent and more famous Yogis have shared their versions of shedding light on Yoga. Depending on how deep one's own practice has been, there are several jewels of information in this small book that many current practicing yogis will find interesting, as well as some different perspectives on material that may offer a slightly differing view than what is generally taught in yoga teaching programs. As a historical document, Yoga Philosophy delivers quite a good understanding of the practice from a time period when Yoga was barely heard about in the US, much less known, and makes for interesting comparison for how most people approach Yoga in the 21st century.

Walking through the grandeur of Amber Fort or witnessing the heart-wrenching reality of children begging in the streets, one is constantly reminded of life's radical duality. This coexistence of opposites is a powerful teacher in the yogic tradition, where we are called to witness without attachment. The practice of holding both beauty and pain with equanimity lies at the heart of our spiritual evolution. Embracing the Extremes: Beauty and Suffering Intertwined India amplifies the senses. The vibrant markets, ornate temples, and intricate craftsmanship offer a feast for the eyes, while the rawness of human suffering confronts us at every corner. It is tempting to be swept away by either extreme—to revel in the beauty or to grieve the suffering—but true wisdom lies in the ability to hold both without preference. Life's richness comes not from avoiding discomfort or chasing pleasure, but from embracing the tension between the two. The Spiritual Path: Detachment in the Face of Duality The mind seeks to categorize experiences as ‘good' or ‘bad,' yet the teachings remind us that duality is an illusion. We are called to bear witness to both extremes, knowing that they are transient and that neither defines the deeper reality. The practice of detachment, of seeing without being swayed by the highs or the lows, is essential on the spiritual path. In navigating life's contrasts, we cultivate a stillness within—one that remains unshaken by the duality of external circumstances. This is the essence of our practice, and it is here that we find our deepest strength and wisdom.

It does not have to be 60 minutes or 30 minutes or even 10 minutes. It can be really short. And if that makes my body feel good, that is enough."   "Another thing that can be so hard actually, is that if our expectations for our practice are really high, ...we're never going to get anything done."   "Why are we putting value judgments on the length of time?"   "Your home practice does not need to look like the classes that you teach. Your home practice should look like what you need."   "We just need to reframe what we think is necessary for both home practice and what we teach."   "Motivation is fickle."   "We want to assign so much more power to yoga and to movement because we want things to be miracle fixes."   "I don't necessarily think that a 15-minute practice means that you're rushing things."

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 373: Yoga Philosophy for Parenthood with Claire Holloway   Description: How can yoga philosophy support people in their parenthood or caregiving journey? Are the ancient yogic teachings still applicable to modern life? Claire Holloway shares insights about how we can tap into the wisdom of yoga philosophy to guide our actions as we navigate this phase of life.   Claire is the founder of The Centre of Bright Beginnings. She offers yoga, corrective exercise, and educational support for those embarking upon or moving through the journey of matresence – conception, pregnancy, postpartum, and parenting. Her work supports not only those identifying as mothers but also parents, caregivers, and parents-to-be. She studies and shares yoga through the lens of her personal experiences of becoming and being a mother.   In this episode, Claire reflects on her own postpartum journey and the challenges she faced that led her to do the work she does now. She breaks down how we can apply the teachings of ancient yoga philosophy to life today as parents, and shares practical tips on integrating yoga philosophy into our day-to-day activities. Claire also shares how we can moderate our energy as parents when so much of it goes to our children, how to avoid comparing ourselves with the “perfect parents” on social media, the many decisions that are connected to parenting and birthing, and more.   This is such a rich discussion for anyone who is a parent, future parent, caregiver, or if you support or know parents in your life.   Key Takeaways: [0:06] This episode is about how yoga philosophy can support you as a parent or in some other capacity as a caregiver. [3:41] This episode is sponsored by OfferingTree and Pelvic Health Professionals - and Shannon has some big news about Pelvic Health Professionals. How does it still apply to parenting today? [25:44] How does Claire start to bring in yoga philosophy when talking to brand new parents? [30:57] With social media, it is easy to compare ourselves to others and feel like we're not living a perfect life or being perfect parents. [41:09] What are some of the challenges new parents are facing now? [48:15] Shannon and Claire discuss tapas and how that can show up in parenting. Even that simple awareness can bring more compassion to ourselves. "   "The more out of control things feel, the more we cling to whatever we feel that we can control."   "One of the really underlying themes is about um taking the right action as opposed to stopping and not acting because of the fear."   "Yoga is about the opposite of that, about coming back from separation and isolation towards connection and community and unity."
