In this episode of the Superpowers for Good show, HaChi Yu, Director of Jivamukti Yoga® New York, shared her passion for fostering deep connections—not just through yoga practice but through a broader vision of community and inclusivity.“Yoga actually means union or to yoke, which means to create a connection,” HaChi explained. She described Jivamukti as grounded in the Sanskrit concepts of “Jeeva,” meaning soul, and “Mukti,” meaning liberation. “We are all trying to reconnect to our true potential and our true nature, which we believe is goodness,” she said.HaChi's mission extends beyond the physical practice of yoga. The studio serves as a hub for building relationships, learning, and healing. Jivamukti Yoga®, founded in 1984 in New York City, emphasizes a philosophy of interconnection: to oneself, to others, and to the earth. After navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the closure of her Los Angeles studio, HaChi returned to New York and opened a small studio in Chinatown. Now, she is expanding to a larger 5,000-square-foot flagship location in Brooklyn. HaChi described the new space as one that will “allow us to host multiple studios for meditation, yoga classes, readings, and events simultaneously.”To bring this vision to life, HaChi is raising funds via a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Honeycomb Credit. She views the campaign as an extension of her yoga philosophy. “The community is not separate from the business,” she noted, emphasizing the collective nature of sustaining inclusive wellness spaces.Supporters can join the campaign by visiting s4g.biz/jiva or scanning the QR code featured during the episode. Crowdfunding allows people to contribute to meaningful projects with even modest investments, aligning with HaChi's vision of accessible and inclusive participation.Jivamukti Yoga® is more than a physical practice. It's a reminder of shared responsibility and the power of community. Supporting this expansion is an investment not only in yoga but in a more connected and compassionate world.tl;dr:Jivamukti Yoga® emphasizes connection as the foundation for personal and community transformation.Founder Sharon Gannon and David Leif launched Jivamukti in NYC, fostering a yoga lifestyle since 1984.After COVID closed her LA studio, HaChi reopened in NYC and is now expanding to Brooklyn.HaChi is using Honeycomb Credit crowdfunding to raise capital, embracing her community-first philosophy.HaChi identifies connection as her superpower, teaching others to forge meaningful bonds across differences. How to Develop Connection As a SuperpowerHaChi believes her superpower is connection, a skill tied directly to her yoga practice. “Yoga means to link, it means to connect,” she explained, adding that her ability to connect with others transcends physical yoga. She focuses on fostering connections between people, cultures, nature, and shared human experiences. Her goal isn't to highlight individual differences but to celebrate similarities, saying, “What makes us the same? Not what makes us different.” This focus allows her community to thrive and underscores her belief that connection is the foundation of wellness.Years before transitioning into yoga, HaChi was a professional ballerina. During one of her retirement performances, she panicked moments before stepping on stage in stilts. Overwhelmed with fear, she voiced her hesitation to the stage manager. When her director noticed her struggle, he addressed the audience directly, bringing transparency to the challenge she faced. This act of connection—being seen and supported—helped her proceed with confidence. The incident reinforced HaChi's belief in the power of connection to overcome fear and foster growth.Tips for Developing the Superpower of Connection:Listen Deeply: Focus on what's behind a person's words with empathy and attention.Foster Inclusivity: Look for common ground to connect across differences.Be Vulnerable: Ask for help when needed—it builds mutual trust and understanding.Cultivate Awareness: Pause to reflect on shared humanity before responding.By following HaChi's example and advice, you can make connection a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileHaChi Yu (she/her):Director, Jivamukti Yoga® New YorkAbout Jivamukti Yoga® New York: Educational center offering haven for physical, mental, emotional health and well-being through mindfulness practices.
In 2017 Derek sought out Alison West, one of the most recognized and respected yoga instructors in the industry, for his 200-hour teaching certification and his first step out of the pain, tension, and overall chronic imbalances that dogged him for over five years. It was Alison who helped introduce Derek to the infinite potential that yoga offers for developing agency and awareness in navigating the deep challenges with our twisted, asymmetrical, and complex bodies and tapping into the mind-body connection. Alison West, Ph.D, E-RYT, C-IAYT is director of Yoga Union and the Yoga Union Backcare & Scoliosis Center, and has been teaching yoga for over thirty years.

My conversation with Sol Nazzar, a yoga teacher from Honduras, was so beautiful as we dove into her history and how getting in tune with yourself helps you to be inspired by your true nature. I hope that this conversation made you want to travel to learn more from yoga teachers around the world just like Sol and I both have done. And how it has changed both of our paths because of it - it can change yours as well! If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about Honduras then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Honduras episode? What was it like to “grow up” with yoga? Yoga as a family activity every Sunday Why incorporate dance, capoeira, body expression, and theater into yoga? How to find your own inner guru? Yoga is an everyday methodology Tell me more about Sol Nazzar Sol Nazzar, a yoga teacher from Honduras, has been teaching yoga for 20 years, integrating her diverse training in Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, Sivananda, Jivamukti, Hatha, and Vinyasa styles. She combines her experiences in capoeira, dance, body expression, and theater to create a unique and fluid approach to yoga. She teaches internationally and at the Yoga's Garden in Honduras. What to expect in the Yoga In Honduras episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Sol Nazzar is a radiant yoga teacher hailing from Honduras. Sol's name, meaning "sun" in Spanish, perfectly captures the radiance she brings to her dynamic and transformative yoga classes. With 20 years of teaching experience under her belt, Sol's journey has led her to integrate various yoga styles, including Ashtanga, Iyengar, Kundalini, Sivananda, Jivamukti, and Vinyasa into her teaching. But it doesn't stop there; she infuses her classes with her deep love for capoeira, dance, body expression, and theater, creating a unique and mesmerizing experience for her students. What sets Sol apart is her deep-rooted connection to yoga, which she inherited from her family. Growing up, her father's life-changing encounter with an Indian guru led him to embrace yoga wholeheartedly. Her mother, while pregnant with Sol, also practiced yoga, creating an aura of positivity and mindfulness that surrounded her family from the very beginning. Their Sunday ritual of exploring different yoga asanas together laid the foundation for a lifelong passion for yoga and a love for sharing its profound benefits with others. In the backdrop of Honduras, where yoga was once met with skepticism and misconceptions, Sol's perseverance and passion have contributed to its blossoming acceptance. Her family's studio, Yoga's Garden, has been a guiding light, offering a sanctuary where students discover the true depth of yoga beyond physical postures. The studio's nurturing environment has attracted practitioners from diverse backgrounds, fostering growth in not only asana but also meditation and energy work. To be an authentic spiritual warrior, one needs spirituality every day. That person shouldn't just talk the talk but they should also walk the walk in every aspect of life. A spiritual warrior needs to have healthy habits every morning. They get to the yoga mat consistently, recite mantras, dive deep into meditation, dedicate their lives to the study of ancient texts, and experience perpetual soul growth by going on spiritual retreats. They have to immerse themselves to partake in diets, fasts, and plant medicine journeys for months at a time. They have to not fear the intake of psychedelics and bad trips. Spiritual warriors take all of those sacred teachings that they've learned and share them with their students. All these things combined form a being of integrity, the authentic spiritual warrior. Join Anand as he talks to health and wellness educator for 25 years, Jai Sugrim about why everyone needs spirituality through yoga in their life. Jai is steeped in the Jivamukti and Ashtanga yoga lineages and has a 15-year history of studying shamanism with master curanderos of the Peruvian Amazon. He loves to share health and mindfulness practices that help his students create peace of mind. Start being in the now today by listening to this episode.
Hate something? Change something!Born at the beginning of the 60s, Stewart experienced the hippy revolution, punk rock, new wave, two tone, reggae and much more in the diverse politicised atmosphere of Thatcherist Britain. Leading a wild, nihilistic, and hedonostic lifestyle led him to a multitude of years and experiences with hallucinogenics, shamanism and ethnobotany both recreationally and spiritually. The new age travellers and the second summer of love in the UK, where Rave and Ecstacy redefined alternative culture and reinvigorated the esoteric arts, which kindled an interest in buddhism and yoga in Stewart. Following a severe back injury Stewart experienced an amazing recovery through intensive Astanga Vinyasa Mysore yoga practice.Stewart's sadhana led him toward an extensive yoga education with teachers from around the world who have had a profound effect on his style of teaching.A devoted activist in a wide range of issues: the Arms trade and nuclear disarmament, human and animal rights, environmental and ecological issues, anti-racist/fascist, pro LGBTQ, anti capitalist and anti poverty. He spent 10 years as a youth worker and teacher within the voluntary sector before training as a Lawyer in inner city London. Stewart relates his radical traditionalist approach to Yoga to include these important modern issues and his experiences therein. With great respect to the founders for their activism in animal rights he qualified as a Jivamukti teacher in 2003 and since has taught extensively in London and worldwide with annual retreats workshops in India and Sri Lanka. Stewart is a Senior Registered Yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance. He founded East London School of Yoga and has been teaching Teacher Training for 8 years. He is currently studying at SOAS University toward an MA in Traditions of Yoga and Meditation with hopes of research toward a Phd. Jeffrey's yoga journey started in 2007, after graduating from Berklee College of Music. At the time he couldn't afford to attend daily yoga classes, but the practice was such an emotional healing bomb for him that he learned on his own from DVDs, YouTube and attending one community class each week at his local yoga studio. Jeffrey moved to New York in 2009 and began practicing at Jivamukti Yoga School. In 2011 he completed the 300hr Jivamukti Yoga Certification, respectfully thanking Sharon Gannon and David Life for making that possible and continued on to complete the 500hr Jivamukti apprenticeship that same year. He began practicing Ashtanga Yoga on his own in 2012 and in 2014 I found his teacher, Guy Donahaye (director of the Ashtanga Yoga Shala NYC). In 2015, he began apprenticing under Guy's tutelage, acquiring all the techniques, concepts and philosophies that were imparted to him from his teacher. Jeffrey continues to immerse himself daily in sadhana so that he can share his love and passion for yoga to inspire others as he has been. You can connect with Jeffrey at https://www.instagram.com/jeffreyvillanuevayoga/ (@jeffreyvillanuevayoga) and on his https://www.jeffreyvillanueva.com/ (website). In this Changemaker Challenge episode, Carly Banks sits down with fellow yoga health coach Dana Skoglund. Dana broke the $100K mark with her yoga health coaching income this year, working an average of 25 hours per week! Prior to YHC, Dana was making $18K teaching 6-8 yoga classes per week. To try to make more money, she would lead a ton of workshops, but that left her exhausted. Dana now works 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. Her evenings and weekends are free to spend with her family, and she loves the freedom of creating her own schedule. Yoga Health Coaching also provides Dana with the freedom to travel because she can work from anywhere. Dana's success is due in great part to her ability to understand the value of investing and reinvesting in her self and her business skills. Simultaneously, she's investing in the growth of the people she can serve. Her goal for next year is to double her income. With an income that exceeds her basic needs, Dana is able to reinvest in her business skills, design the life she wants to give herself and her family, all while leading others to permanent positive change. How did yoga become so popular in America? One of the epicenters where the transformation took place was Jivamukti Yoga Center in New York's East Village. Ken talks with Jivamukti co-founder and legendary teacher Sharon Gannon about how she wedded rigorous asanas with Sanskrit chanting and meditation, presented it as a complete philosophy grounded in Eastern mysticism, and somehow, improbably, made yoga hip. People showed up in droves, as did celebrities like Madonna, Sting, Willem Defoe and Donna Karan. Today Jivamukti Yoga centers are in major cities around the world, and its influence is felt deeply. Sharon Gannon is a musician, an animal rights/vegan activist, and the author of several books, including her latest, The Magic Ten and Beyond: Daily Spiritual Practice for Greater Peace and Well-Being. In our conversation, she talks about what drew her to yoga, and what led to the creation of the Jivamukti method. Hi everyone! Cate here with Dana Skoglund. Dana has been in YHC mastery for two years, with her first pilot in April 2015. She is doing amazing things with her health coaching career, surpassing her goals in finance, impact, and reach each year. She just finished her 10th round of courses, and she now has two other mastery continuity programs that she's created. Today, we are going to chat about marketing and client outreach, and tackle some of the following questions: How do I build a lead generation system to convert 60 people into my course again and again? What is your conversion rate? When you get on the phone with them, how many people opt-in to your courses? If your conversion rate is lower than 30%, what's wrong with the system? When in that sequence are you making an offer? Make the offer to have a strategy session with you sooner than later. When are you making an offer to join your program? Is there a way to simplify? Tune in to hear our laser coaching session that focuses on nurturing potential clients and making time for personal interactions, allowing you to advise them on what they truly need. What you'll get out of tuning in: Why personalized interactions are so important How to use feminine-style marketing to nurture qualified leads When to make an offer, and when to hold off Show Highlights: Yoga Health Coaching Yoga Health Coaching Mastery Dana's website Show Highlights: 3:00 - When building your email list, think about how many people you need to hit your goal. Then consider how you can simplify it to reach the people who will sign up for your courses at the price you are willing to give them. 7:00 - Make sure you get yourself in a peak state before you coach someone into enrollment in your courses. 10:45 - Instead of pushing clients toward your courses, get interested in what's going on with them. When they come in, it's not about you and your values; it's about finding out more about them and what they need. 15:00 - Don't make an offer prematurely. Whether it's free trainings, body work, applications for more sessions, or making sure they see quality content that may help them personally, your work can really nurture them in what they need. 20:00 - In all content, you should always provide an opportunity for them to have a conversation with you. This will allow people the opportunity to get in touch with you and your courses more quickly and efficiently. 22:50 - Ask people to refer their friends! More people are willing to give referrals than we typically ask. And referrals have the best conversion rate, with 80% of people buying when they have a referral from a friend. Favorite Quotes: "In any kind of coaching, you want to get yourself in a peak state before you dial or sit down with someone." - Cate Stillman "I choose to feel confident that I can do this. I listen deeply. I come from a place of wholeness. I trust myself and the universe." - Dana Skoglund "Reevaluate how you have your home page so people can just get right into a strategy session with you." - Cate Stillman "At some point paying for leads is faster." - Cate Stillman Guest BIO: Dana Skoglund is a Certified Yoga Health Coach, Yoga teacher, and mother of two rambunctious young boys. "It took me a while to be okay with reaching out and investing in support." "There's always a big long list, but by creating organization within that list…I'm only working on one or two things at a time. And that feels totally doable." Coach Bio: Dana Skoglund is a Certified Yoga Health Coach, Yoga teacher, and mother of two rambunctious young boys. [FEATURED GUESTS] About Kip Andersen Kip Andersen's environmental awakening came as a result of An Inconvenient Truth. After seeing the film, he began to recycle religiously, turn off lights constantly, shower infrequently, and ride a bike instead of driving. Andersen believed he was doing everything he could to help the planet by following the guidelines of national and international environmental organizations, but his life took a different direction when he found out animal agriculture is the leading cause of environmental destruction. He is the founder of AUM Films and Media, a 501c3 non-profit focused on creating films and media that promote thrivability, compassion, and harmony for all life. He is also an entrepreneur, as well as a certified Jivamukti and Kundalini yoga teacher. He is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo school of business and has called San Francisco home for more than a decade.
