Edward Snowden is largely only a public name thanks to Glenn Greenwald's reporting, for which he was one of the contributors to a Pulitzer Prize-winning series for The Guardian in 2014. For a while, Matt Taibbi was considered the heir to Hunter Thompson when his gonzo journalism tore open the 2008 financial crisis and gave the public the term “vampire squids.” Yet in more recent years, both men have swerved right: Glenn became a darling on Fox News and Taibbi was recruited by Elon Musk as one of the Twitter Files “journalists.” How did that happen? We're joined by journalist Eoin Higgins, whose new book, Owned: How Tech Billionaires on the Right Bought the Loudest Voices on the Left, dives into the career arcs of both Greenwald and Taibbi, and how they confuse and distort right-left alignments. Born in New Haven, CT, Heidi reported on the fashion universe for national magazines, writing features and styling photo shoots throughout her twenties. With a BA in apparel and textiles from Cornell University, she covered style and travel from New York to Paris, where she served as Fashion Director and Associate Bureau Chief of Women's Wear Daily and W Magazine. After Paris she went to India, where she lived part-time studying yoga for the next 8 years. In 2007, she opened and taught at a yoga studio in San Francisco, and two years later, she discovered her creative self in photography. Self-taught, she began by creating self-portraits and realized a meaningful way to make sense of the world and her place in it. Her images are often based in self-inquiry that stem from personal experiences, relationships, and/or investigate identity. She is represented by galleries in the U.S. and Uruguay and has exhibited internationally. Heidi is a founding member of the online collective Six Shooters, has twice been a Critical Mass finalist, received recognition from the likes of WPGA Pollux Awards and the Julia Margaret Cameron Award. Her work has been featured in PDN and Rangefinder magazines and in online photo blogs including CNN, NPR and the New Yorker's Photo Booth. Editorial credits include WSJ Magazine, Disegno and Grey Magazine. In 2014, Kehrer Verlag published the photography book Grassland under Lender's pseudonym H. Lee. She currently resides on an 80-acre ranch in Pueblo Garzon, Uruguay, where she has founded CAMPO, a nonprofit creative institute, supporting international artists, www.campogarzon.org.In this episode, Heidi recounts her impulsive decision to leave her burgeoning career as a fashion director in Paris at the young age of 26. Her tale is marked by personal challenges, including a divorce and the emotional rollercoaster of IVF, which she bravely shares with Anne. Heidi's journey of self-discovery and resilience is punctuated by her immersion into the world of yoga, where she trained under the renowned Pattabhi Jois, finding solace and a renewed sense of purpose.Prompted by Heidi expressing the realizations she had while shopping in Goa, Anne shares a similar experience from her recent trip to Greece, emphasizing the significance of unique, locally crafted fashion. Anne also speaks candidly about her battle with rheumatoid arthritis and how yoga has been instrumental in her physical and emotional well-being, noting that movement does indeed help with pain, despite seeming counterintuitive. The episode takes a reflective turn as Heidi shares the trials and tribulations she faced during her attempts at conceiving through IVF, eventually leading her to embrace a different life path with acceptance and grace.A pivotal moment in Heidi's personal story, she tells Anne, is her discovery of Garzon, Uruguay. During an impromptu trip to South America, she stumbled upon her dream home in the quaint village, which became the birthplace of CAMPO. Heidi describes to Anne how her passion for photography flourishes in this picturesque setting, where the art of self-portraiture becomes a therapeutic outlet and a means of self-expression. The episode highlights how photography, combined with mindfulness practices, has been a crucial part of Heidi's healing journey.Heidi goes deeper into the founding and growth of CAMPO, which has evolved into a sanctuary for artists, chefs, and writers from around the world. Heidi articulates her vision of creating transformative experiences for both residents and attendees, fostering a sense of community through artistic collaboration. The festival, now a three-day event with a month-long residency program, is using the theme "unsettled" this year. The theme explores migration and movement, thus reflecting Heidi's own journey of continuous reinvention. The episode concludes with a heartfelt discussion between Heidi and Anne on the value of solitude, introspection, and the interconnectedness of creative pursuits and personal growth. Heidi shares important moments of reconnection with her past and influential figures, weaving a narrative of the importance of serendipity and openness to new perspectives. Through her story, Heidi exemplifies resilience, creativity, and the transformative power of embracing life's unpredictable turns. An intimate and heartwarming interview with a talented artist who has a plethora of global experience. Matthew is in the guest seat today! Why? Because in 2019—just months before the pandemic and this podcast kicked off—he published a book titled Practice and All is Coming: Abuse, Cult Dynamics and Healing in Yoga and Beyond. It focused on survivor stories of assault and abuse within the cultic mechanisms of Pattabhi Jois' Ashtanga Yoga community. The book also proposed a path into co-creating safer yoga communities via enhanced critical thinking, self-and-other-care, student empowerment, and community resilience. In many ways, this book holds the keys to how one-third of the team has tackled the conspirituality era. Derek and Julian interview their colleague about it all on the occasion of the release of a second edition, now titled: Surviving Modern Yoga: Cult Dynamics, Charismatic Leaders, and What Survivors Can Teach Us (North Atlantic Books). She began her study of yoga at the age of 18 while attending the University of Massachusetts. From her first class, she knew she had found something special and deeply familiar. While she began to practice yoga on a purely physical plane and because it felt good, it became apparent some years later that there was more to Yoga than she originally thought. In 1991, Nicki traveled to Mysore, India to study with Sri K Pattabhi Jois, the master of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. She fell in love with the practice and continued her studies with Pattabhi Jois until his death in 2009. What she experienced on that first trip was a radical realization that yoga is much more than a physical practice. The yoga affected her deeply on an emotional and spiritual level. After that she was hooked! As she delved deeper into the Ashtanga practice she became curious about her teacher's teacher and his lineage. She learned that Tirumalai Krishnamacharya had been Pattabhi Jois' teacher and also the teacher of BKS Iyengar. This led her to study Iyengar Yoga with Mr. Iyengar, his children and with many of his senior teachers as well including Gabriella Giubilaro and Patricia Walden, at his institute in Pune, India. Nicki has always believed that her practice continued to grow and evolve due to her study and practice of both of these systems of Yoga. Nicki continues to study to study yoga with senior teachers and believes that a great teacher must always remain a dedicated student. Nicki's teaching has grown out of her practice and her deep faith in yoga and she chooses to honor her students as individuals first and foremost. Nicki's style combines asana, pranayama, philosophy, and poetry and her classes are strong and accessible to everyone. Nicki uses humor in her teaching to set her students at ease and she is considered to be very relatable and down to earth. She is known as a Teacher's teacher and loves igniting the spark of yoga in her students. Nicki lives on the beautiful island of Maui, Hawaii, where she owns and directs the Maya Yoga Studio on the North Shore of Maui. She has been featured in numerous articles and has graced the cover of Yoga Journal magazine. She is featured in 2 Ashtanga Yoga videos available through Gaiam and in 9 videos entitled Maya Yoga Vinyasa on her youtube channel. She is currently finishing a book on Yoga for beginners. Nicki teaches workshops and teacher training courses at her studio on Maui and travels all over the world conducting workshops, teacher trainings, and retreats.
Deep Cut pulls from our bonus episode archive to unearth previous ideas that remain relevant today. News from Alabama: after a 23-year ban on yoga in schools, generated by a Republican moral panic, Governor Kay Ivey signs a bill that lets kids do yoga again, but with some restrictions: "All instruction in yoga shall be limited exclusively to poses, exercises, and stretching techniques. All poses shall be limited exclusively to sitting, standing, reclining, twisting, and balancing. All poses, exercises, and stretching techniques shall have exclusively English descriptive names. Chanting, mantras, mudras, use of mandalas, induction of hypnotic states, guided imagery, and namaste greetings shall be expressly prohibited." Those who promote yoga as universal goodwill welcome this Indian art form being made more accessible for children in a State with terrible educational markers. Hindu nationalists, on the other hand, might be outraged at a secularized version of yoga, stripped not only of references to Hinduism but of signs of any type of Indian spirituality. And a lot of white yoga progressives will look at this policy—mostly from the urban North— and worry about authenticity and appropriation. How will the children feel? In considering who wins and loses with this new development, Matthew reviews recent U.S. yoga-war history: battles between the Hindu American Foundation and Yoga Journal, the rise of Christian non-yoga-yoga "Praise Moves", and Encinitas Union School District got sued for allegedly violating the Establishment Clause by contracting devotees of Pattabhi Jois to teach the kids yoga. It's not a stretch to see an overlap between this theme and the medical-moral panic over vaccines. In both cases, the focus is on the imagined corruption of children, whether by poison, politics, or inner quiet. You might know David Garrigues as a Certified Ashtanga yoga teacher, but today you'll hear all about what spurred him into the Seattle punk scene, and how music pulled him out of a very difficult time in his life, where he was homeless and starting to sink into a very dark place. How did he go from a homeless young punk rocker to practicing yoga in Mysore, India, with Pattabhi Jois? You'll find out in this episode. David has a deep dedication to the practice, music, poetry, and art. We discussing the evolution of his practice and teaching over the years and how it's culimated in his newest book: Ashtanga Yoga Vinyasa: Movement, Breath, and Posture in the Primary Series. It takes courage to write a book, let alone six of them! It takes courage to put yourself out there on YouTube consistently (if you haven't checked out Asana Kitchen with David Garrigues - be sure to) and to create over 20 video courses! And it takes courage to get on your mat every day. David talks about some of the motivations that continue to bring him to his mat daily, some deep emotions that continue to linger, like shame, anger, and resentment. This need for constant purification and ongoing evolution, is what continues to spur him to gather up all his courage each day to face himself on his mat! We're examining both the shadow and the light aspects of the asana practice today with David Garrigues, and his particular approach to practice within this deeply explorative conversation. I hope that this conversation made you see what is possible in the realm of yoga — and what is IMPORTANT on the path of yoga. If you're looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about yoga in Angola then this is the conversation for you. Support the podcast: https://www.patreon.com/wildyogatribe Tell me more about Hamilton De Sousa Hamilton De Sousa has been practicing yoga for over 20 years. As he says, he fell in love with the first sun salutation and never looked back. He has spent time in India studying Ashtanga yoga in Mysore and Goa. He opened his own studio in Angola called The Studio in Luanda, the capital city of Angola. He teaches Ashtanga, Hatha, Power, and Restorative yoga at his yoga studio. Hamilton is also a long-time Vipassana meditator. For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Angola episode? The body is the best teacher Don't push until you break A background in fitness and as a personal trainer The most important thing is to be on the mat every day Doing a yoga pose won't make you a better person Yoga is a big ocean, you can't know everything in one lifetime What to expect in the Yoga In Angola episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast Hamilton De Sousa, a yoga teacher from Angola, defines yoga as a self-journey and self-inquiry practice that helps humans evolve and develop to connect their individual consciousness to the universal consciousness. Through the practice of yoga, one can become self-aware of their body, thoughts, and consciousness and ultimately become one with all. Hamilton shared with us his profound experience - an experience of oneness where he left his body, went into the sun, and touched everything. This experience made him realize that he is everything, and he is not afraid to die since that day. Hamilton shares how he fell in love with yoga and his 20-year journey practicing Ashtanga yoga, as well as vipassana meditation. He emphasizes the importance of discipline and devotion in Ashtanga yoga, while also acknowledging the need to adapt the practice to truly listen to the body. He also highlighted the humbling nature of yoga and its ability to become an integral part of one's daily life. Incredibly, Hamilton studied with Pattabhi Jois himself in Mysore, India, and while the classes were large and he received few adjustments, the energy and progress he experienced were unparalleled. When the conversation veered towards why the world needs, yoga Hamilton shared his belief that people are turning to yoga to answer deep existential questions and cope with the stress and fast pace of life. Yoga provides a way to connect and find purpose in life. Curious about yoga in Angola? This is the conversation for you! It's often said that yoga is timeless, but many modern methods are recent inventions. What keeps them anchored in earlier traditions? I recently explored this with Mike De Masi, who runs a discussion group devoted to the yoga of T. Krishnamacharya and his students – from B.K.S. Iyengar and K. Pattabhi Jois to T.K.V. Desikachar and Srivatsa Ramaswami.Among other topics, our conversation covered:* What “tradition” means when so much has changed* Whether stories told by lineages stand up to scrutiny* How one relates to other worldviews as a foreigner* What scholarship on yoga can offer practitioners* Why critique should be balanced with respectRESOURCESWorldwide Krishnamacharya Yoga CommunityBreath of the Gods (a 2012 film about Krishnamacharya)“The Yoga of the Haṭhābhyāsapaddhati” (Birch and Singleton)The Goddess Pose (a book about the life of Indra Devi)Srivatsa Ramaswami's Vinyasa Krama website Get full access to Ancient Futures at ancientfutures.substack.com/subscribe
Traditionally, physical yoga aims to raise vital energy. This is often described as a serpent-like power that dissolves the mind. However, one influential teacher saw Kuṇḍalinī differently. T. Krishnamacharya, who taught B.K.S. Iyengar and K. Pattabhi Jois, said it was a blockage that had to be burned, not a means to liberation. Simon Atkinson's book explains why. Drawing on his experiences as well as his research, this conversation explores implications for modern practitioners. Simon has practised yoga for more than 20 years in the tradition most closely associated with Krishnamacharya's son, T.K.V. Desikachar. Cathy Louise has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga for 31 years. Her first teacher was Beryl Bender Birch, who she did a two-year apprenticeship with in New York in the late 1980s. Cathy Louise's early studies with Beryl still inform her teaching today. Cathy Louise met Pattabhi Jois during his first visit to New York and received his blessing to teach Ashtanga in 2000. Known for her transformative hands-on adjustments, Cathy Louise's teaching style also owes much to John Scott. In the late 1990s, she assisted John in his Mysore classes in London and then inherited her own Mysore style classes at Astanga Yoga London. While in London she taught vinyasa yoga at Triyoga, did a year-long apprenticeship in Pregnancy Yoga with Lynne Pinette, and met Nancy Gilgoff who was pivotal in empowering Cathy Louise as a female Ashtanga teacher. Cathy Louise's Pregnancy and Mom & Baby classes draw on her experience as a mother of three. In her Ashtanga classes too, she openly shares her journey as a woman so students may learn how best to adjust the practice of yoga in all stages of their lives. Perimenopause is the time before menopause. A woman's hormone levels start to change causing symptoms like: Irregular menstrual cycles – ovulation becomes less regular. Flow can be lighter or heavier Hot flashes – hormone changes can start to create hot flashes. Sleep problems – due to hot flashes or “night sweats”. Mood changes – hormone levels change meaning some women have more mood swings, irritable. Decreased fertility – ovulation becomes less regular so it's harder to conceive. Changes in sexual feeling – less interested in sex. Loss of bone density – with lower oestrogen bones lose density faster than you can replace bone. Changes in cholesterol levels – lower oestrogen levels can make you start to have “high cholesterol”. Other symptoms can be vaginal dryness, weight gain, slow metabolism, thinning hair, and dry skin. Menopause is when you have not had a menstrual cycle for at least a 12-month period. Menopause can happen in your 40s to 50s. The average age in the US of menopause is 51 years old. Symptoms can continue as with “perimenopausal” symptoms, and you can also experience: Fatigue, difficulty concentrating or memory loss, dizziness, weight gain, incontinence, bloating, changes in body odour, depression and anxiety, breast pain, headaches, joint pain, burning tongue, muscle tension, dry itchy skin, osteoporosis, gum problems, anxiety, brittle nails, tingling in the legs/arms. Early Menopause or Premature Menopausecan happen any time before the usual age of 40s-50s. Early menopause can come with having a hysterectomy (removal of ovaries), chemotherapy (cancer treatment) or stress. It's important if you have early menopause that you have a balanced diet and take medical advice to make sure you remain healthy.

He was introduced to Ashtanga yoga to deal with anxiety and depersonalisation disorder, and it helped him immensely. Soon afterwards made the trip to Mysore at the Laxmipurum shala with Pattabhi Jois. He was granted Level 2 authorisation from the AYRI, as it was known at the time. That was over 23 years ago, and he's remained immersed in yoga. Matt complements his Ashtanga practice with Zen Buddhism and the daily sitting practice of Zazen. He finds in this combination an immediate effect resulting in a steadier, more focused mind whilst moving through the asana sequences. The result is a sense of in-the-moment presence coupled with a solid flexible mind & body. In 2015 Matt created the ‘Nee-Ji', safe knee support for yoga & meditation. (nee-ji.com). Norman E. Sjoman is the author of the 1996 book The Yoga Tradition of the Mysore Palace. The book contains an English translation of the yoga section of Sritattvanidhi, a 19th-century treatise by the Maharaja of Mysore. It contributes an original view on the history and development of the teaching traditions behind modern asanas. According to Sjoman, a majority of the tradition of teaching yoga as exercise spread primarily through the teachings of BKS Iyenger and his students. He claims this “appears to be distinct from the philosophical or textual tradition of hatha yoga. In addition, it does not appear to have any basis as a genuine tradition as there is no textual support for the asanas taught and no lineage of teachers." Sjoman studied at the University of British Columbia and Stockholm University before obtaining a PhD from the Centre of Advanced Studies in Sanskirt at Pune University. In addition, he holds a pandit degree from the Mysore Maharaja's Mahapathasala. Sjoman spent 14 years in India studying four different shastras n Sanskrit, with several pandits. In the mid 1980s, while doing research at the Mysore Palace, Sjoman made copies of the yoga section of the Sritattvanidhi. This was a "colossal" illustrated compendium, authored in the 19th century by the then Maharaja. The book included diagrams of 122 yoga asanas. Unlike the few other known historical yoga treatises, the emphasis was solely on the physical activity. Some appeared based on Indian wrestling and other gymnastic exercises. In that aspect more closely resembling modern yoga as exercise forms such as Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Both B. K. S. Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois, who are major influences on modern yoga forms, themselves studied under teacher Tirumalai Krishnamacharya at the Mysore Palace in the 1930s. Sjoman discovered that the royal family, in the early 1900s, had employed a British gymnast to train the young princes. When Krishnamacharya arrived in the 1920s to start a yoga school, his schoolroom was the former gymnasium complete with ropes. Sjoman argues that several exercises detailed in a purposely written western gymnastics manual were incorporated into Krishnamacharya's syllabus, resulting in his vinyasa style, and further passed on to Iyengar and Jois. The Yoga Tradition of the Mysore Palace was published in 1996 including the 122 asana illustrations and extracts from the gymnastics manual. Naturally, the radical, perhaps heretical, idea that some of the practice of modern yoga as exercise is based on something as mundane as British gymnastics caused a stir in the yoga world.
Dreams of becoming a Professional Golfer crushed by debilitating back pain sent Rob Lamport on an epic search in Secret India for the esoteric teachings that could free him from his body pain. He lived in Mysore and practised with B.N.S Iyengar as well as Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois. Learn why you might want to be careful eating too many bananas! After his first trip he swore to never go back to India (like so many of us!) but after a few months away, he began to miss it and so decided to return and spent the next three years living there. (like so many of us!) Dr. Rob became a fixture in the Gokulu, community as our go too guy for putting overzealous yoga folks back together! You'll find Rob is a pretty humble and private guy. Now living in Italy, he continues to be fully dedicated to his yoga practice with a strong focus on pranayama, learning from Sri. O.P Tiwari (as Harmony has also done). He loves to cook, especially with his wonderful wife Tara Mitra, who was also a guest on our show (episode 91). He offers online yoga anatomy courses for complete beginners and for those yoga instructors with previous experience. They offer insights into muscular and joint movement learned through modern medical research and clinical experience. Each course includes a basic understanding of anatomy and function, describes the most common conditions, and how to manage them through yoga medicine. During the course of this morning's conversation we touched on the subject of authenticity. How does someone become real we asked? And it was said that Sunny Boy Williamson whispered this to John Lennon once about the Rolling Stones, “They're plastic soul, John.” So, he called Paul, and named his album “Rubber Soul.” After a long time of practice and effort the Rolling Stones became real and they made Gimme Shelter… and nothing has been more real since. This said, our guest today is not a Greek Warrior Princess. She is neither Greek nor a Princess! She is, in fact, Mauritian, speaks Creole, was born in London to nurses and very seriously grew up destined to be a Dentist. Though she had her dharma firmly in hand, she got a little hunched in the shoulders from bending over all those open-mouthed patients, and a little frustrated holistically let's say, with the narrowness of that profession. And so, she decided to pursue a new dharma, one more aligned with her true self. She became a yogi. Much like her mother and in harmony with the heritage of her grandparents and great-grandparents. We spoke with Zeena on some surprisingly hot topics. We went looking for answers to some difficult questions regarding appropriation and appreciation? What is the difference? Does appropriation have to do with breaking ahimsa (non-harming)? We talked about privilege, racism, and defining our present understanding of past experiences — as uncomfortable as that new understanding might be… like our work with the transgressions of Pattabhi Jois. It was incredible that these typically uncomfortable and very difficult topics became easy to discus with Zeena — Her infectious humour and grace allowed us to flow with ease and gentleness. She is a rare gem. “Wherever there has been pain and some form of practice or reverence has been born from that pain… We feel protective around it.” FIND OUT MORE ABOUT ZEENA WEBSITE I INSTAGRAM I ASHTANGA YOGA CLUBHOUSE JOIN HARMONY APRIL 10th - Spirit-Centered Self-Care Retreat The Finding Harmony Podcast is hosted, edited and produced by Harmony Slater and co-hosted by Russell Case. Oi ga vay and Jesus Christ! Happy Purim and Passover! Oh boy, do we have a special interview for you today! We have someone we have wanted to speak to ever since we first initiated this Podcast: The Inimitable Eddie Stern! But man, we had so many problems with this recording! Ha! Just booking the time, some unexpected delays, so we just jumped right in without any introduction. Then we stopped so abruptly we lost the damn interview for weeks, only recovering the recording with a bit of technological magic. You'll feel absolutely transported as you jump right into our conversation with the iconic Eddie Stern… Talking about rectangles of all things and their place of importance in our world! Around 3 minutes in, you'll get to hear why (or why not) we always do postures to the right side first! And, of all the outrageously unorthodox things we said in this interview, “jumping to the left” seems to epitomize how unconventional we've all become. So listen now, as Eddie speaks to the origins of Revolved Side-Angle (parivrtta parsvakonasana) in the Ashtanga Sequence, and to the larger context of “Listening” within the yoga tradition. What is it that we, as students, can learn from surrendering our own beliefs and desires to a steadier mind found in the teacher? Is this even necessary? These days, Eddie is, surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly), directing his attention away from Pattabhi Jois' lineage, no longer wanting to engage in that world and all that it represents. We ask him to speak about how we, as students, might find our way moving forward in a post-guru world. It gets emotional. Spoiler Alert! Be sure not to miss the celebrity name drops at the end and a beautiful story about Lou Reed passing from life to death. A little Ashtanga episode for your ear holes! Nothing I like better than a fine and geeky Ashtanga-based chat and what a privilege to do so with the raconteur himself, Russell Case. Russell has been practicing and teaching Ashtanga yoga for more than 25 years. A humble and refined teacher, he was given Authorization by Pattabhi Jois in 2005. Case is known for his joking spirit, and his perpetual eye toward social justice work. When Pattabhi Jois invited him to his pranayama class in 2007, he considered this distinction to be the highest grade. Russell co-hosts the Finding Harmony Podcast with Harmony Slater which is one of my favourite yoga podcasts and if you like Ashtanga you should check them out

Born in 1964, Bryan Kest has been practicing yoga since 1979, starting when he was 14 years old. He initially studied in Hawaii with David Williams, the first person to bring Ashtanga yoga to America. He then studied in India with K. Pattabhi Jois, the main proponent of Ashtanga yoga. Bryan Kest has been teaching yoga since 1985. "My primary objective", says Kest, "besides turning more and more people on to a healthier, more peaceful lifestyle that continually challenges them to grow, is to teach a system of exercise that fully integrates the body, mind, and spirit. The new trend towards yoga is not surprising, given that the body is limited and the mind is limitless. The combination of body and mind creates an incredibly broad range of fulfillment, including top physical condition and a calm, peaceful, clear mind." Today, WE TALKIN' BOUT PRACTICE!One of my favorite quotes stems from the philosophy of K. Pattabhi Jois, "mid-husband" of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga: "Practice and all is coming." He found it very essential to manifesting success and growth.Allen Iverson had a very different value judgment of practice: "who needs it?!"The answer: EVERYONE WHO EVER WANTS TO BE THE BEST VERSION OF HERSELF/HIMSELF/THEIRSELVES.In today's solo-sode, I will tell you how to bridge the gap between who you are and who you want to be. How to go from desiring self-development to *being your living, breathing, developing self* continuously. Namely, how to become You 2.0.Our fiery desires to become the next level version of ourselves are great, but not enough to create transformation. We have to fill that gap with...you guessed it: PRACTICE!Not any practice. Intentional, directed, and smart practice.I utilize a personal example of my own process of self-development: my vision to become Abby The Speaker 2.0.Feel free to follow my template to becoming You 2.0:Visualize & Feel: Who is You 2.0? What is she/he better at? What qualities does she embody and emanate? Where is she doing her better-ness?Research & Define: What do you need to practice to become the specific vision of the better you? What work/reps will it take to become that future person, already nestled inside of you today? What arsenal of skills do you need to acquire and sharpen? What emotional and mental barriers or zones of discomfort will you have to accept and break through?Position Yourself Accordingly: What environment do you need to be in to become You 2.0? When you surround yourself with like-inspired and like-focused community, you will develop that much faster and that much more powerfully.Simply Practice, Again and Again: Do the intentional, directed, and smart practice over and over again.+1: Practice of the Pod (POP): Get out a pen and a journal. Focus on your breath for 1-10 minutes allowing your third eye (imagination, intuition, insight) to run free. Then answer these questions:Leftmost: 'what do I want to become better at?' 'who do I want to evolve into?' I want to become better at (fill in the blank). I want to evolve into a person who embodies (fill in the blank) and emanates (fill in the blank).Rightmost: Write that identity and embodiment in the present tense. 'I am an excellent (fill in the identity).' 'I emanate (fill in the quality/qualities).'In the gap: fill in all of the skills you can practice on a daily basis to close the gap.Bonus: Set a reminder in your phone to do one of those things in one small way, starting TODAY.
This week, Comes a Time welcomes Denise Kaufman, musician, yogi, activist, founding member of the all-girl SF band Ace of Cups, Merry Prankster, and so much more. Having joined her first Civil Rights picket line at 14 years old, Denise found herself as a young activist in the 1960's San Francisco in the heart of the same world where the Grateful Dead came to be. Denise shares with Mike and Oteil the incredible tale of meeting Ken Kesey, “getting on the bus,” and getting her Prankster nickname “Mary Microgram.” She also explains what led to her going to music school at 33, her time teaching yoga to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and other celebrities, and opening a private school in Hawaii now in its 44th year of operation. Denise has lived many lives in one with one adventure following the next. Growing up in San Francisco during the 1960s placed Denise Kaufman at the center of a cultural revolution. Her commitment to social justice and exploratory approach to life led her to adventures in counterculture: from being arrested at UC Berkeley's Sproul Hall protests during the Free Speech Movement, to "getting on the bus” (as "Mary Microgram") with Ken Kesey, the Merry Pranksters and the Grateful Dead; to forming the legendary Ace of Cups—an all-girl band that opened for Jimi Hendrix, The Band, and Janis Joplin; to being one of the seven founding mothers of Island School on Kauai; to studying with Robert Nadeau Shihan, Yogi Bhajan, Bikram Choudhury, Pattabhi Jois, and Paul Grilley and to teaching yoga to Madonna, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Quincy Jones, and Jane Fonda. Denise lives between Venice Beach and Kauai - playing music, teaching yoga, surfing and continuing to learn, channel inspiration and connect all those around her. Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, BKS Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, TKV Desikachar. These are all names that many in the yoga community are familiar with and are considered by many to be the pioneers of modern yoga. But thanks to the work of modern yoga scholars like Elliott Goldberg, we are learning about numerous other figures who influenced the modern practice of yoga. Who were these characters and how did they affect how yoga evolved in modern times? Join us with Elliott Goldberg, yoga scholar and author of The Path of Modern Yoga: The History of an Embodied Yoga Practice, as we discuss a figure named Yogendra Ji who paved the way for the modern yoga teacher and set the stage for how hatha yoga would be taught in the west. His sessions lasted about an hour and culminated in savasana, not meditation. Many of his views, such as his feelings on guru yoga and the practical benefits of Hatha Yoga, echo in many modern yoga teachers today.
