Jabee is a rapper from Oklahoma City with a story to tell. Armed with memories of his own experiences filtered through the lens of books by the likes of Huey Newton, Assata Shakur, and Kurt Vonnegut, Jabee's album, "Black Future," is full of socially conscious and introspective songs that bang, a rarity in present day Hip-Hop. He acknowledges the past and the present, but as the album's title suggests, Jabee looks towards the future and inspires the listener to get active and create the desired outcome for oneself and one's community. Joshua Harris was the Green Party candidate for mayor of Baltimore City in 2016, securing a remarkable 10%-13% of the vote, but don't confuse him for a politician. He is an activist who works in the community on issues of civic engagement, educating people on where to get needed information about what is happening in the communities they live in, and also training citizens on grassroots organization. He is also a proponent of the arts and how they can help to build strong communities, and his non-profit, Hollins Creative Placemaking, does just that. Your name is one of the most important things you will ever have in your life. Potential allies, enemies, employers, and loves interests glean from it a glimpse into your upbringing, culture, and status in society. A name passed down from an influential and wealthy grandfather can open doors without you ever having to lift a finger to turn the knob, while a quote unquote “ethnic” name that originates from a culture of lower standing in the hierarchy of the class, or caste system of society, can close those doors just as quickly. On this episode, recorded the day after the big Freddie Gray protests in Baltimore on the eve of Saturday 04/25/2015, we discuss the Freddie Gray incident, the protests after, and the history of Baltimore Police brutality and the cover ups. The conversation then takes a turn to more abstract but related topics of protests in general, making real social change, consciousness, the role of Black women in all of this, morality, the role of religious institutions, and ends with a powerful "rant" by Singodsuperior about the need for all humans to respect all other humans as human beings.
