In this "Industry Dive" episode, Chris Gehringer, a Senior Mastering Engineer & Partner at Sterling Sound joins me for an in-depth discussion on the state of mastering & the loudness wars in modern music. Chris has mastered countless albums over the decades, such as: Wu-Tang Clan's “Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” & Naughty By Nature's 1991 self titled album, along with modern chart toppers such as Rhianna, Lady Gaga & Dua Lipa. Chris' work has also received 20 Grammy nominations (and counting). In the episode, we talk about: the evolution of music mastering; where the loudness war stands in 2025; how brickwalling hinders the mastering process; if there will ever be an industry shift towards "louder doesn't mean better;" Eric Bass of Shinedown's experiences with Sterling Sound's Ted Jensen & how Eric prefers a more dynamic master of their music; how Chris was involved with the interludes featured on Wu-Tang Clan's "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers);" the loudness / brickwalling controversy surrounding Metallica's "Death Magnetic;" how Dolby Atmos & AI might factor into the future of mastering & so much more! Be sure to visit MyWeeklyMixtape.com to hear all of the songs we discussed in this episode!  Theme music is "Unveiled" by The 4th. Reminiscing from some of my favorite moments in SSA History. On this episode, we unearth a gem from the catalogue reviewing the Greatest Two Weeks In Hip Hop (hence the title). On November 9th & 23th, 1993, three of the greatest albums in Hip Hop History was launched. Wu-Tang Clan released their debut album, "Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers" on Nov 9th; & on the same day, A Tribe Called Quest released their 3rd album (& arguably their greatest album), "Midnight Marauders." Two weeks later on the 23rd of that month, Death Row Records released Snoop Doggy Dogg's long anticipated debut album, "Doggystyle." All three projects became some of the most timeless works of art within the genre, helping to usher in a Golden Era of Hip Hop & pushing the culture forward. We break down all three albums; how it may have represented the greatest 2-year peak in Hip Hop history, and waaaaay more. The crew reviews the almighty Wu-Tang Clan and their iconic classic debut album Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) as it turns 30. After doing what seemed the impossible to assemble a supergroup of emcees hailing from Staten Island and Brooklyn, the collective gained major notoriety with their debut single "Protect Your Neck". Word and a buzz began to grow. The group, which was lead by creative guidance of executive producer and member RZA, drew acclaim for their unique approach to hip-hop music: Utilizing a martial arts motif gained from 70s kung-fu flicks and legends mixed with rugged street tales from the 90s New York City and a mixture of gems of knowledge and Supreme Mathematics from the Five Percent Nation (which many of the group were members), they excelled of their raw lyrical ability over dusty, yet refined soul samples with a heavy dose of hard percussion. Critics and fans all over were amazed. The album featured the fellow singles that were noteworthy: the timeless "C.R.E.A.M (Cash Rules Everything Around Me)" and the cult classic hit "Could It Be So Simple". Supporting these singles were a strong a set of album tracks that became almost as recognizable and classic as their radio worthy counterparts. As of 2023, it is almost 4x platinum and been recognized by many publications and organizations as one of the best 20 hip-hop albums of all-time. In 2022, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It is also noted as an album that was the backbone of the East Coast hip-hop renaissance of the mid 90s along with Enta Da Stage, Illmatic, Ready To Die, The Sun Rises In The East and others.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesThe Conversation: 'Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" Turns 30https://theconversation.com/enter-the-wu-tang-36-chambers-turns-30-how-the-album-pays-homage-to-hip-hops-mythical-and-martial-arts-origins-215049Albumism: Wu-Tang Clan's Debut "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" Turns 30 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/wu-tang-clan-debut-album-enter-the-wu-tang-36-chambers-album-anniversaryNPR (All Things Considered): Revisiting "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" 30 Years Laterhttps://www.npr.org/2023/11/05/1210800438/revisiting-enter-the-wu-tang-36-chambers-30-years-laterHypeBeast: RZA Announces "(36 Chambers) 30th Anniversary Shows https://hypebeast.com/2023/9/rza-36-chambers-wu-tang-clan-30th-anniversary-gramercy-theatre-shows-announcement-infoSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Today, we're delving into the gritty and groundbreaking world of hip-hop with the seminal album "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" by the legendary Wu-Tang Clan. Released in 1993, "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" is not just an album; it's a cultural phenomenon that forever changed the landscape of hip-hop. This album was the brainchild of a rap collective like no other, the Wu-Tang Clan, hailing from the gritty streets of Staten Island, New York. "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" is a hip-hop masterpiece that's as raw as it is poetic, as aggressive as it is introspective. The Clan, composed of RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa, and the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, unleashed their lyrical prowess over RZA's rugged yet masterful production. The album is a lyrical and sonic martial arts masterpiece, where each member brings their unique style and perspective to the forefront. Tracks like "C.R.E.A.M.," "Protect Ya Neck," and "Shame on a N***a" are like verbal barrages, showcasing the Clan's intricate wordplay, vivid storytelling, and innovative flow. "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" is more than an album; it's a movement. The Clan's lyrics and style are steeped in kung-fu imagery and street tales, creating a universe that's both otherworldly and deeply grounded in reality. Their influence extends far beyond music, shaping fashion, language, and the very essence of hip-hop culture. Upon its release, the album was met with critical acclaim and garnered a dedicated following. It's now widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. The Clan's use of martial arts samples, gritty production, and their sheer lyrical prowess redefined what hip-hop could be. As we drop the needle on this vinyl gem, we invite you to join us on a lyrical journey through the rugged and innovative sounds of "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)." We'll explore the Wu-Tang Clan's impact on hip-hop culture, the album's enduring influence, and its well-deserved place in the pantheon of rap classics. Crédits :  — Générique : Dr Alban "Sing Hallelujah" — Titres écoutés dans l'émission : “Bring Da Ruckus”, “Shame On A Nigga”, “Clan In Da Front”, “Wu-Tang: 7th Chamber”, “Can It Be All So Simple”, “Protect Ya Neck (Intermission)”, “Wu-Tang Sword”, “Da Mystery Of Chessboxin'”, “Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta F' Wit”, “C.R.E.A.M.”, “Method Man”, “Tearz”, “Wu-Tang: 7th Chamber - Part II”, “Conclusion”. Prince Rakeem “Ooh I Love You Rakeem”, Dr. Dre ft. "From the slums of Shaolin, Wu-Tang Clan strikes again The RZA, the GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck Raekwon the Chef, U-God, Ghostface Killah and the Method Man..." (and also Masta Killa...) That's right. Today we're talking about the greatest rap album of all time made by the greatest rap collective of all time. It's time to enter the 36 chambers of death... "Enter the Wu-Tang" is explosive, rugged and raw, and filled with verse after verse of the nastiest bars on top of some of the greatest hip hop production ever. With RZA's beats masterfully combining the grime of gangsta rap with the gritty and violent confrontations in kung fu films, they were unstoppable. By the end of this album, you know exactly who Wu-Tang was, what they're capable of, and an incredible look at the world they were creating with their own 'Shaolin'. Marta Sigríður Pétursdóttir fjallar í dag um kvikmyndirnar Blindspotting og The Girl in the Spider's Web. Og hugað verður að merkilegri plötu: Wu-Tang Clan er rapp-stórveldi, hip hop-heimsálfa, fatalína, íkonógrafía, lífstíll, fagurfræði og söguheimur út af fyrir sig. En allt hófst það með plötu sem kom út fyrir aldarfjórðungi síðan, Enter The Wu Tang (36 chambers). Davíð Roach Gunnarsson spilar Wu Tang Clan í hljóðkerfi lestarinnar í dag og hækkar svo um munar.
