When #BlackLivesMatter emerged in 2013, it animated the most consequential Black-led mobilization since the civil rights and Black power era. Today, the hashtag-turned rallying cry is but one expression of a radical reorientation toward Black politics, protest, and political thought. We're joined today by the author of a book about the past 10 years of political movement, Christopher Paul Harris. His book To Build a Black Future examines the spirit and significance of this insurgency, offering a revelatory account of a new political culture—responsive to pain, suffused with joy, and premised on care—emerging from the centuries-long arc of Black rebellion, a tradition that traces back to the Black slave. City Lights LIVE, The New Press, and Princeton University Press celebrate the publication of two new books: “America Purgatory: Prison Imperialism and the Rise of Mass Incarceration” by Benjamin Weber, published by The New Press, and "To Build a Black Future: The Radical Politics of Joy, Pain, and Care” by Christopher Paul Harris, published by Princeton University Press. “American Purgatory” is a vivid work of hidden history that spans the wars to subjugate Native Americans in the mid-nineteenth century, the conquest of the western territories, and the creation of an American empire in Panama, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. "American Purgatory" reveals how “prison imperialism”—the deliberate use of prisons to control restive, subject populations—is written into our national DNA, extending through to our modern era of mass incarceration. Weber also uncovers a surprisingly rich history of prison resistance, from the Seminole Chief Osceola to Assata Shakur—one that invites us to rethink the scope of America's long freedom struggle. To “Build a Black Future” examines the spirit and significance of this insurgency, offering a revelatory account of a new political culture—responsive to pain, suffused with joy, and premised on care—emerging from the centuries-long arc of Black rebellion, a tradition that traces back to the Black slave. Drawing on his own experiences as an activist and organizer, Christopher Paul Harris takes readers inside the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) to chart the propulsive trajectory of Black politics and thought from the Middle Passage to the present historical moment. Carefully attending to the social forces that produce Black struggle and the contradictions that arise within it, Harris illustrates how M4BL gives voice to an abolitionist praxis that bridges the past, present, and future, outlining a political project at once directed inward to the Black community while issuing an outward challenge to the world. Benjamin Weber is an assistant professor of African American and African Studies at the University of California, Davis. He has worked at the Vera Institute of Justice, Alternate ROOTS, the Marcus Garvey and UNIA Papers Project, and as a public high school teacher in East Los Angeles. He makes his home in Davis, California. Christopher Paul Harris is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global and International Studies at University of California, Irvine. His research interests range from Black political thought, culture, aesthetics, and social movements to broader questions concerning the possibility of revolutionary transformation in the 21st century. Advancing an abolitionist critique of the capitalist world-system, his work aims to understand the political lives, thought, and cultures of the Black diaspora and the underlying social forces that shape them. Thursday, November 30th, 2023 Christopher Paul Harris is Assistant Professor of Global and International Studies at the University of California, Irvine, and the author of To Build A Black Future: The Radical Politics of Joy, Pain, and Care. We discuss why addressing our society's hard-wired prejudices must be a substantial part of our endeavors toward a truly multicultural democracy. Central to building a Black future is reframing and recreating institutions from the perspective of those who have been historically marginalized. The core of the Black movement is a response to Black pain and anti-Black violence. Despite all the violence, Black Joy is evidence that Black communities are thriving and serve as a prefigurative politics of what's possible on the other side of pain. Care is recognizing that Black people and other marginalized communities carry trauma and need healing. 19 Keys presents High Level Conversations to bring you into the high frequency of talk to elevate your mindset and value. S1E13 Ft. Chaka BarsFeatured Guest Bio:Chaka was born in Barbados and grew up in England. After joining the military and serving active duty in Iraq for four years, Chaka returned home to find that a close friend of his was murdered. Chaka decided to make a shift, realizing his life was more valuable than what he was doing with it, and moved to London starting Spartanfam, which promotes an "anytime, anyplace, anything" philosophy to working out; no expensive diets or equipment -- just bodyweight. He outgrew that path fairly quickly when he realized that he had greater potential and purpose for helping others. Chaka went on to create IHeartAfrica, an organization founded to help preserve orphanages and medical centers in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in 2017. With his mission to help people and build a better future, Chaka raises funds with the help of donors, including celebrities such as Lenny Kravitz, Michael B. Jordan and Colin Kaepernick, to continue to build a sustainable future for orphaned children in Africa. He is on the front lines of issues that affect Black people first-hand and is educating us by touching on issues from health care, socio-economic class, human rights and the importance of a vegan diet. Chaka wants “our” people to thrive as a culture. When you speak to Chaka, you're immediately drawn in. He has something about him where you're hanging on to his every word and wanting to learn more about his organizations. This Episode:This episode goes high level on the relationship between black americans and the rest of the diaspora, the future of Africa, relationship between men and women, and much more.
