L is for Ligtnin' (and) Licks. Ladies Love Loud Losers, listen...In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past six decades, artists the world over in every artistic medium have used Eno's strategy while attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2025, lazy, lackluster yet somehow still award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming forty-third episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. They had previously utilized the letters A thru K, so naturally, they went with L.Sonic contributors featured in Lightnin' Licks Radio's forty-third episode include: Beastie Boys, National Public Radio, James Todd Smith, Ol' Burger Beats, Prince Paul, De La Soul, Gravediggaz, Method Man, John Ussery. RZA is a rapper, producer, composer, actor, director, and the creative mastermind behind the hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan. Since the group's classic 1993 debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), he has produced the most albums for the group and its respective members, pioneering a style rooted in stark booming beats, vintage soul samples, and gritty narratives. Beyond Wu-Tang, RZA launched the horrorcore group Gravediggaz and released music as his alter ego, Bobby Digital. His artistic range extends to scoring films like Dallas Jackson's Thriller, acting in projects like G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and collaborating with artists across genres, including Paul Banks of Interpol in the duo Banks & Steelz. In August 2024, RZA, alongside Colorado Symphony and Christopher Dragon, released his first classical album, A Ballet Through Mud, continuing to redefine boundaries in music and storytelling. ------ Thank you to the sponsors that fuel our podcast and our team: Athletic Nicotine https://www.athleticnicotine.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Squarespace https://squarespace.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Vivo Barefoot http://vivobarefoot.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA25' ------ LMNT Electrolytes https://drinklmnt.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Sign up to receive Tetragrammaton Transmissions https://www.tetragrammaton.com/join-newsletter

It's a good idea to check in with your favorite works of art as you get older. You may find that you have outgrown certain albums, or that they haven't aged well. Maybe the meaning will deepen over time, as certain aspects of a record mean something different as you move through life with a different perspective. That is the goal with our occasional retrospective episodes... we take a look back at records after 30 years and see what we make of them as adults. This week we are apply9ng that lens to Gravediggaz masterpiece, the misunderstood 6 Feet Deep. DBRP hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc are joined by collaborator Cutso to dissect the album that kicked off the horrorcore movement accidentally. 6 Feet Deep (known by a title we're not at liberty to type in Europe) is one of Prince Paul's masterworks, a theme album about resurrecting rappers who suffered from mismanagement by adopting horror film atmospherics, wild sing song flows, and razor sharp lyrics from his collaborators. Of course, we all know that RZA would go on to change the sound and business environment of hip-hop with Wu-Tang, but fellow Diggaz Frukwan and Too Poetic were perhaps the group members most committed to the bit. The resulting album is one of the most unique in the genre and we're happy to detail why we feel that way. For further discussion on this topic please check out DBRP 77 which contains an interview with Frukwan and any of our previous episodes with Prince Paul interviews as well. This episode was produced by Paolo "Cutso" Bello and we deeply appreciate his involvement. Theme song by DEM ONE and Cutso. Episode art by David Ma. Brought to you by Stony Island Audio, the only podcast network with shows that have featured interviews with both Jerry Seinfeld and Boom Bap Project.

To end the month of October, we had to save the best for last. Arguably the best album in in the horrorcore genre, we give you 6 Feet Deep from group Da Gravediggaz released in ‘94. Considered a super group consisting of producer Prince Paul (The Undertaker), rappers Fruitkwan (The Gatekeeper), Poetic (The Grim Reaper), and the RZA (The RZArector), all assuming graveyard style names. It is the perfect blend of beats and rhymes to create a spooky atmosphere and definitely the pinnacle of slasher hip-hop. https://www.tiktok.com/@brandonhetzel996?_t=8qu5gyqVsMt&_r=1 https://www.instagram.com/str8_the_clippa/profilecard/?igsh=cTBzNnFhenRkN3Nl https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086006336425&mibextid=LQQJ4d

Hey, stop that sniggering at the back. Just because a Prince album is called 'Come' doesn't mean that it's all smutty and full of filth. Oh wait no, that's exactly what it means. Recommence sniggering if you wish. If you want to hear Prince croon about oral sex and orgasms then have we got a treat for you in this episode. Conversely if you want to hear Krister find it excruciatingly embarrassing having to listen to Prince's sexy talk then you're also in luck. Thankfully we're also able to chat about acts such as Jeff Buckley, Gravediggaz and Orbital so it's not all wall to wall smut. As always please do give us a follow on our social media platforms and why not go and give us a nice rating over on Spotify now that you're able to while you're checking out this episode's companion playlist and our ongoing and sprawling playlist of songs from each album that we do an episode on. Cicely Balston won the 2023 Music Producer's Guild's Mastering Engineer of the Year Award, and when you hear the music she has mastered—and the smart, easygoing way she discusses it—you understand why. Working out of AIR Studios in London, Balston has applied her talents to the doom-punk band Witch Fever and David Bowie's back catalog, as well as some dynamite-sounding hip-hop reissues for the Vinyl Me, Please record club, including Eric B. & Rakim's Don't Sweat the Technique, Gravediggaz's 6 Feet Deep, and Madlib's Shades of Blue. How did this young British woman become an ace hip-hop masterer, and do those albums require a specific skill set? Are people too fixated on analog vs. digital? How did she become a mastering engineer anyway, and what's the most commonly misunderstood aspect of what she does? (Photo by Silvia Gin.)

REMASTERED & OPTIMIZED - Series 0 Episode 4 (1998) of Ricky Gervais & Stephen Merchant on XFM, before they met Karl Pilkington. In this episode, Ricky Gervais bleeps out the Gravediggaz 1-800 Suicide. In remastering so-called "Series 0", my aim is to subtly improve audio quality while maintaining the generally 'rough' character of the sound. Importantly, these 9 'episodes' have attained a sort of canonical status among XFM fans, which I do not intend to change by attempting to rearrange the bits and stitch them back together in the 'proper' order. Therefore, you may notice repeated links that are not all in chronological order. The original XFM radio show hosted by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant in 1998 marked the beginning of a comedic partnership that would later evolve into the popular podcast and television series known as "The Ricky Gervais Show." Initially, the show aired from January to August 1998, every Sunday from 4–6pm, and featured a mix of music, banter, and interactive segments with the audience. This early version of the show was more conventional in its format, with Gervais and Merchant engaging with listeners through phone-ins and reading letters, setting the stage for their unique brand of humor. The duo left XFM following the station's acquisition by the Capital Group in 1998. After the success of the first season of "The Office" (UK), which Gervais co-created with Merchant, Gervais and Merchant returned to XFM in 2001. They were joined by producer Karl Pilkington, whose offbeat musings and life stories became a central feature of the show. Pilkington's role evolved from merely "pressing the buttons" to becoming an integral part of the show, contributing his unique perspective and stories, which endeared him to the listeners. As a result, the show shifted its focus to Pilkington's anecdotes and the co-hosts' reactions, creating a cult following that endures to this day. THIS TRACK HAS BEEN OPTIMIZED FOR AUDIO.

Today we are joined by the man, the myth, the legend Killah Priest. Brooklyn rapper Killah Priest has spent his lengthy, respected career making intensely spiritual music that connects Gnostic religious philosophy with the contemporary Black struggle. He made his first appearances on several Wu-Tang Clan side and solo projects, including albums by Gravediggaz, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and Genius/GZA, leading to the signing of his group Sunz of Man and the release of his acclaimed debut album, 1998's Heavy Mental. After leaving the major-label system, he went independent with 2001's Priesthood, and became an integral member of supergroups the HRSMN (aka the Four Horsemen) and Black Market Militia. He's continued releasing ambitious, metaphor-heavy solo albums such as 2007's The Offering and 2013's The Psychic World of Walter Reed, and produced some of the most experimental, spiritually advanced work of his career with later works such as 2020's Rocket to Nebula. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Brownsville, Killah Priest (Walter Reed) became infatuated with hip-hop as a child, listening to old-school and new-school acts alike. He also was influenced by local figures Genius and Onyx's DJ Suave, who would often play local parties. Killah Priest began working on his rhyming and eventually earned a considerable reputation in his neighborhood, but instead of furthering his musical career, he took a sabbatical to educate himself, primarily about religion and history, which had a major impact on his songwriting. Priest made his return to rap in 1994, appearing on several Wu-Tang projects including Gravediggaz' 6 Feet Deep, Ol' Dirty Bastard's Return to the 36 Chambers, and Genius/GZA's seminal Liquid Swords. All of his cameos were noteworthy, but his role on Liquid Swords -- especially "B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth)," essentially a Priest solo track -- earned special attention. By the end of 1996, his own group, Sunz of Man, was off the ground, having become the first act signed to Wu-Tang Records. In 1997, GZA suggested to Geffen that they should sign Priest, and the label took his advice. Priest worked on his debut solo album with True Master and 4th Disciple, two producers who were also associated with Wu-Tang. The resulting album, Heavy Mental, was dense with religious imagery and filled with evocative sounds. It received excellent reviews upon its March 1998 release and was a respectable commercial success, debuting at number 24 on the Billboard 200. Priest issued his second album, View from Masada, in May 2000, further bolstering his status as one of the most compelling solo artists in the extended Wu-Tang family (even though, at the time, he was disconnected from the crew). Although View from Masada was well-received, it failed to do well commercially, and he was dropped from his label. While many rappers let go from a major-label either vanish or take years to resurface, Priest wasted no time and established his own imprint. July 2001's Priesthood, involving no Wu-Tang input whatsoever, was produced by Luminati and Nirocist, and released on the MC's Proverbs imprint. July 2003's Black August, however, came out on Recon. Although he certainly wasn't silent after this -- Black Market Militia (featuring Tragedy Khadafi and Hell Razah), the HRSMN (featuring Ras Kass, Kurupt, and Canibus), and Sunz of Man were ongoing concerns -- a few years passed before Priest's next solo album. March 2007's The Offering appeared on the Traffic-distributed Good Hands Records. His release schedule picked up considerably -- Behind the Stained Glass, Black August Revisited, and Beautiful Minds, the latter a full-length collaboration with Chief Kamachi, were all released in 2008. The Exorcist, Elizabeth, and several mixtapes appeared in 2009. The 3 Day Theory, featuring guest appearances by several emcees including Cappadonna, Ill Bill, and the Last Emperor, was released by Man Bites Dog in 2010. Following several delays, Killah Priest returned in 2013 with the ambitious double-CD The Psychic World of Walter Reed, a reunion of sorts with the Wu-Tang family, featuring guest rhymes and production by GZA, RZA, Inspectah Deck, and Ghostface Killah, as well as an appearance by George Clinton. The more sci-fi-themed Planet of the Gods appeared in 2015, and Priest formed the group Moon Crickets with Toronto-based rapper Lord Fury and DJ Mercilless. The Infinite Universe, with Vendetta Kingz, was released in 2016, and the mixtapes Don't Sit on the Speakers, Vol. 1 (with 4th Disciple) and The Untold Story of Walter Reed, Pt. 2 appeared in 2017. A 2020 mixtape with frequent collaborator Jordan River Banks, Journey to the Planet of the Gods preceded one of Priest's deepest, most abstract releases, Rocket to Nebula, an often-beatless record filled with reversed samples and ambient textures. A proper album with Banks, The Third Eye in Technicolor, closed out the year. The cinematic Lord Sun Heavy Mental 1.1 appeared in March of 2021.Show Notes:Killah Priest | Official WebsiteKillah Priest TV | YoutubeKillah Priest | InstagramKillah Priest | TwitterKillah Priest Discography | DiscogsGhostface Killah | TwitterRZA | TwitterNature Knows No Color-Line: Research into the Negro Ancestry in the White Race by J.A. And keep on eye out for upcoming shows by his bands Death By Stereo, Voodoo Glow Skulls and Manic Hispanic! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: The only ICP song we really discuss is (of course) “Miracles”. The Great Milenko is a devil figure in the Juggalo cosmology - "According to the group's mythology, The Great Milenko is a necromancer and illusionist who tries to trick individuals into greed and other such sins. He takes out the worst in an individual and creates powerful illusions in an attempt to cause them to become hedonistic and greedy. An honorable individual must fight his magic in order to make it to Shangri-La." Horrorcore is a genre that was a big deal in the 90s. It's pretty much what it sounds like. Horror-inflected rap music. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony were initially extremely horrorcore. They had a song called "Hell Sent" about invading hell and killing demons. Looking back now it was inescapable, from the Geto Boys ("Chuckie") to Ice-T ("pulse of the rhyme") to the Gravediggaz ("1-800-Suicide"). It's one of those things you don't realize is everywhere until years later when it's gone. American Juggalo is a great short film about the Gathering of the Juggalos. You should watch it. Busey movies discussed include The Buddy Holly Story, Point Break, Under Siege and The Gingerdead Man. We also talk about his appearances on such reality TV shows as I'm With Busey, Celebrity Rehab and Gary Busey Pet Judge. The Rock is Phil's favorite 90's action movie. People get it confused with Con Air but it's much better. All three stars (Connery, Harris and Cage) go all-out. Jake Busey is Gary Busey's son, he looks like his dad. Starship Troopers is a Paul Verhoeven film loosely based based on the film of the same name by Robert Heinlein. It's maybe the best anti-war movie of the past 50 years but the general public really showed their ass by missing the point. Is Gary Busey in Lethal Weapon? You bet your ass he is. There was a lot going on in 1999. Y2K was looming over us, we were all partying like Prince (the artist formally known as) told us to, all colors were quickly being replaced with chrome, and all the pop monsters like Britney Spears, Cristina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, etc, RULED the charts. But underneath the bubbly surface, a hip hop coming of age tale of epic proportions was being carefully crafted... by hip hop royalty, Prince Paul. If you're wondering why you can't remember a specific song by him, it's because he's not usually center stage. A prodigy from the New York hip hop scene getting attention as young as 14, Paul was in several groups in his teenage years, including the influential group Stetsasonic, before producing De La Soul's first three albums. Paul continued producing and grouping up over the years, with mixed results, including a three song collaboration with Boogie Down Productions (which included KRS-One), a team up with RZA and others called Gravediggaz, and demo for Horror City with Superstar and various other MCs, which although not a success, would end up providing material for "Prince Among Thieves." In 1996 he was ready to make something for himself, but apparently did not have a lot of success in getting people involved, opting to get people outside of the music industry to guest on his debut "Psychoanalysis: What Is It?" It's a very strange album that wasn't exactly a banger, but for the following album, he had more than enough success in getting people involved. Featuring some of the greatest names in hip hop of the time, including Big Sha, Kool Keith, Everlast, Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, Sadat X, Xzibit, RZA, and De La Soul (to name a few), with a Chris Rock cameo for good measure, "Prince Among Thieves" is a time capsule. It's a fully formed rap opera with compelling characters and a story of the streets as old as time...
