Blamison begin a new ongoing series for season 3 by talking about the 2010 film The Book of Eli and pairing it with the 2001 underground hip hop classic The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox. We dig into the film's peculiar place in recent cinematic history, its religious text (because there is little subtext), and what a couple of rappers from Harlem have to do with Denzel Washington. Other things discussed: Red Hot Chilli Pipers, Christian hip hop giants and shitty calculations. KNOSAGE & Novek welcome Adam (Advizer) and Roberto (Cybervato)!Roberto (El Cybervato) is an interdisciplinary performance artist and educator. Sifuente's projects include: #exsanguination, a collaboration with new media artist jonCates and Aram Han Sifuentes (2016-2019); “Reculmulations: Digital Avatars and Performance objects,” a collaboration with digital artist Claudia Hart and composer Edmund Campion (Black and White Gallery NYC).As co-founder of the San Francisco based performance troupe La Pocha Nostra, he has performed and conducted workshops with La Pocha across the US, Canada, Europe and Latin America. Sifuentes has co-authored two books with Guilermo Gomez-Peña; most recently “Exercises for Rebel Artists: Radical Performance Pedagogy” Routledge 2011. As a performance pedagogue, he has been Artistic Director of the Trinity College/La MaMa Performing Arts Program NYC. Sifuentes is currently Professor of performance at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The 1990s saw hip-hop's influence extend well beyond the confines of the traditional large metropolitan areas (New York, Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, et al.), initially spreading into the suburbs, where it infiltrated every socio-economic strata and crossed every cultural boundary, then ultimately found its way into smaller regional niches, such as, in the case of the progressive rap combo Oddjobs, Minneapolis and St. Paul. With the equally forward-looking artists of the Rhymesayers Entertainment enterprise, the group not only helped to put Minnesota on the hip-hop map but, inspired by previous mavericks like De La Soul, the Beastie Boys, Hieroglyphics, and Freestyle Fellowship, also helped to tie rap's coastal-based, old-school past with its visionary, postmodern, untethered future. The individuals who would eventually form the official Oddjobs lineup originally came together in 1996 as members of the 30-odd-strong Cases of Mistaken Identity (CMI) collective, a rotating cadre of rappers, DJs, b-boys, and graffiti writers drawn mostly from a pair of local high schools. By 1998, Minneapolis MCs Advizer (Adam Waytz) and Crescent Moon (Alexei Casselle), and St. Paul producers/DJs Anatomy (Stephen Lewis) and Deetalx (Devon Callahan), had gravitated toward one another and began performing together at all-ages venues as Oddjobs, occasionally backed live by local band Heiruspecs. Not long thereafter, the group released its first tape, Case Studies, with CMI and began to earn a measure of local exposure. The foursome's entrée into more widespread underground circles came the next year with its debut indie full-length, Conflict and Compromise. They attracted even more notice within the hip-hop community after Crescent Moon's strong showing at the battle competition of the 1999 Scribble Jam, and via his frequent spot as an auxiliary MC for Eyedea + Abilities of Rhymesayers fame. Advizer and Deetalx made the move to Brooklyn in the fall of that year to attend college, but the members kept Oddjobs alive via tapes, telephone calls, and commutes, resulting in the 2000 EP Absorbing Playtime. At around the same time, the Funboy EP was pressed in a limited edition of 5000 and officially released only in Japan. (It quickly began making the rounds in the United States as a bootleg.) Across the Tracks, a Deetalx mix CD, and Live at the Bryant Lake Bowl, with Chicago's Typical Cats and Heiruspecs, both appeared in 2001.The full CMI crew -- by that time down to Oddjobs and MCs Nomi and Naimles -- had planned to follow with a full-length project. Instead Nomi (Mario Demira) joined as an official member (CMI Productions became the business front for the group), and the three remaining Minnesotans made the final move to New York the following autumn. Success and respect came surprisingly quickly for the quintet in the Big Apple. Its 12" single "Blue Collar Holler" rose to the sixth spot on the CMJ college radio chart. (A subsequent remix of the song attracted guest appearances from Aesop Rock and Vast of Cannibal Ox.) Oddjobs shared stages with or opened for De La Soul, DJ Shadow, Blackalicious, El-P, and Atmosphere, among others. In 2002 the crew released its first nationally distributed full-length, Drums, on its own indie startup label Third Earth Music. The album was lauded by fans, fellow rappers, and critics alike. They briefly partnered with Eyedea for the extremely rare toss-off cassette Whereabouts of Hidden Bridges. The collaboration also accounted for a track on the next official Oddjobs recording, the six-song The Shopkeeper's Wife EP, released in the spring of 2003. ~ Stanton Swihart
Yo what's up this is toru and in a way so are you. For those of you who don't know me, I'm a music producer, artist, and entrepreneur.I make music for that space between the dance floor and the bedroom, which, as of this moment, I am grateful to say has been streamed millions of times and licensed by brands big and small, including companies like Apple.I believe that regardless of what you produce, whether it be music, art, physical goods, or even spreadsheets, you have a process, whether you know it or not.To explore this further, I created The ProducerHead Podcast.ProducerHead is a place to have conversations with Producers about their experience and process to share what works and what doesn't. To help each of us learn and improve our own processes.Today's guest is Brooklyn-based Cryptic One, a rapper, producer, drum programmer / finger drummer extraordinaire, and honestly a legend in his own right. If you had told a younger me that I'd be talking to this man in this context, there's no way I would have believed you. He's a member of the Atoms Family. He's released music through Def Jux.Has credits with artists that include Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, and others I'm definitely missing.AndIf that weren't enough, Cryptic One just received a Billboard plaque for the Lloyd Banks track “Dead Roses,” which he produced.Today is part two of the incredible conversation with Cryptic One, a Brooklyn-based rapper and producer. If you already listened to part one, then you already know and are ready to strap in for more. If you haven't already heard part 1 of this interview, I highly recommend you check it out. We talked about impostor syndrome, finding your own voice as an artist, and the role of consistency on the path to quality.Today's convo will close out some of the ideas we started in part 1 as well as get into:The impact of social media on finding your artistic identity,Turning small projects into larger projectsHow to use self-doubt positively. That's it for this episode of ProducerHead. Appreciate you coming through and being a part of it. My hope is that it helps you unlock a bit more creativity and find progress in a way that matters to you. Before we go:There are three simple and zero cost ways to support the ProducerHead Podcast.1 - Tap in and subscribe or follow wherever you're listening, whether it be Spotify or Apple.2- If you haven't already, drop a review on Apple or Spotify. As we entered the new millennium in 2000, I started to seriously think about finally starting my own record label. From doing my Time Travel Radio Show, being Co-Owner of Caught In The Middle Magazine, hosting/organizing Scribble Jam, and running my Rage Promotions company, I was regularly meeting indie or unsigned artists with no outlet for their music, and I hoped I could help make a difference. Aesop Rock and Vordul of Cannibal Ox were planned to help me launch the label with exclusive releases, so I could then shift the focus to promoting some new and upcoming talent; Monkey Wrench Factory, Alltruisms, and more! But, this is the label that never was, so what happened?

As one of the founding members of the legendary NYC underground hip-hop crew The Atoms Family, MC/Producer Cryptic One has been a part of a lot of classic material. From his guest appearance on Cannibal Ox's “Cold Vein” to engineering Aesop Rock's “Labor Days” he was primed to take a big leap as a solo artist. But a series of bad breaks shut down his label and caused him to disappear for six years. Cryptic One has returned, but with a different focus on production, reinventing himself in a completely different lane. In this episode, Blueprint sits down with old friend Cryptic One to talk about his reinvention and newfound happiness in music. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We're joined by AJ Suede who spoke with us about his recent album "Hundred Year Darkness" with Small Professor, his previous album "Metatron's Cube" with Televangel, and his album pick for this episode "The Cold Vein" by Cannibal Ox. Big thanks to Suede for his patience working thru some technical issues and for bringing such thoughtful answers to our questions.
In episode 25 I talk to Vast Aire (Cannibal Ox) about Funky Four Plus One, an American hip hop group from The Bronx, New York, composed of Jazzy Jeff, Sharon Green, D.J. Breakout, Guy Williams, Keith Keith, The Voice of K.K. and Rodney Stone. The latter two members also performed together as the duo Double Trouble, notably in the film Wild Style. They were the first hip hop group to receive a record deal, as well as the first to perform live on national television. The group was also notable for being the first to have a woman MC, Sha-Rock.
Episode 103 is the 3rd installment of our indie hip-hop tribute series. This time, we're joined by Mr. Eon of The High & Mighty, who sits with the crew to discuss one of hip hop's greatest eras. We hear stories about how it started for them, the Masta Ace beef, working with Bobbito, The Alchemist, Rashida Jones, Beetlejuice, Kool Keith, Pharoahe Monch, Eminem and Cage. During the late 90s and early 00's, Eastern Conference Records was a staple in independent hip-hop. Who better to tell vivid tales of the indie hip-hop movement than one of the guys responsible for it? We've got joints by Non Phixion, Saukrates, Natural Elements, Jigmastas, J-Live, Arsonists, Company Flow, Cage, All Natural, Rascalz, Cannibal Ox, J.U.I.C.E., Sir Menelik, Kool Keith, Ill Advised, Choclair, Mr. Lif, Mike Zoot and of course, The High & Mighty. What made this era one of the greatest? The music was fresh, innovating, original, honest and most importantly fun. D-I-Y in full effect. Record stores in full effect. Online chat groups where you shared music was definitely in effect. That feeling of excitement while scarfing down a slice of pizza or Gray's Papaya because you couldn't wait to see what Fat Beats on 6th Ave had. When Fat Beats wasn't enough for your fix, you went to the LES to peep A-1 or took the iron horse to Fulton Street, to check out Beat Street and grab a treat from Juniors after. The days in New York during the indie hip-hop movement were magical. Now, let's re-live those memories and magic this era gave us. If you've any interest in underground hip hop then this album is probably familiar to you. Widely hailed as one of the most important hip hop albums of all time, The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox a real lightening in a bottle moment for Vast Aire and Vordul Mega. And now, having just celebrated its 20th anniversary, it seems a good a time as any to explore why. Having formed simply by dint of knowing each other through the New York battle rap scene and hanging out at El-P's flat/studio, Cannibal Ox came together somewhat at the behest of El-P. What transpired was two years of hard graft on their first (of only two) album together, created as they sat around thinking about rhymes and creating music with producer El-P. The skills of Vast and Vordul really shouldn't be underestimated. Having clearly honed their craft through years of spitting rhymes in ciphers on the streets, their lyrical dexterity and outrageous vocal partnership is clearly a highlight of this album. That's alongside El-P's production. This was the first thing he'd ever worked on outside of the work he'd done with his old group Company Flow, and it's a tour de force. Together with Can Ox, they paint a paranoid, dystopian, Philip K Dick inspired vision of Harlem, Brooklyn and New York City as a whole. Despite being hailed a classic, to date it has only sold just over 100,000 copies. Which is clearly fucking insane. That alone means it fulfils our criteria as an unsung classic, but like so many other artists we've covered on this podcast, Can Ox are real artist's artists. So we ask you, is it worth of a place in our discography? You decide, as ever.

We’d always planned to do a hip hop episode after the Cocteau Twins, but after the sad passing of MF DOOM was announced on December 31st 2020, we decided to switch focus from The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox to one of DOOM’s finest hours - Madvillainy by Madvillain. Madvillain is one of many collaborative projects that MF DOOM embarked upon throughout his career, with this particular one being his first collaboration with legendary undergroun hip hop producer/DJ/MC Madlib. One of Daniel Dumile’s many personas, DOOM was born out of frustration with the music industry, ad Dumile sought to “destroy that which had created him” following the death of his brother and the unceremonial dismissal of his first project, KMD by then label Elektra records. Until Madvillainy, we had only properly been seen on the first MF DOOM album Operation: Doomsday in 1999. After creating albums under the names King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn in the period leading up to this record, Madvillain saw DOOM bring his “main” persona back into the spotlight, and there it remained until his untimely death last year. In this episode we cover DOOM’s career right up until 2004, whilst also waxing lyrical on the tendency of some journalists to project their own ideas onto art in order to cack-handedly “legitimatize” something that is already very legit. Part two is next week, and we’ll cover his career from DANGERDOOM onwards, and then get torn into Madvillainy.
Part two with Ro and Deza!!! Because my tremendous mistake in deleting the entire episode while resetting the language settings on my new laptop, I couldn't edit this episode. So the music is a little loud at times and stuff that I mention would remove, is there. But it's still dope and part two!! Where we share music and such! We play some of their tracks from Deza and Ro's new collaborative ep, Pick. Also discussing the topics, inspirations and approach. It's the end of the year so we share a few of our favorites. Limbo by Amine, Kota the Friend, Andy by Raleigh Ritchie, Zeal & Ardor, Crack Cloud, - Deza being of Somali descent and Black America's vaguely West African DNA - the Grammys, melodic rap and "Neo Boom Bap" - Quelle Chris, Chris Keys and Kiefer - Ro and Deza's top five favorite emcees - and we discuss getting super powers on December 21st! Remember: telepathy is for fckn cops! And never trust someone that picks Stryker in Mortal Kombat PSA: 19 year anniversary of the Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox @jetaxel @morikawarollin @dezatoosweet @megalateshow Outro : Budamunk, Mr Brady & Moka Only - Light Bright
Your Hosts This Episode: Patrique battered_sphinx In this episode Patrique is joined by fellow RYMer, Discord member and Abstract Hip-Hop connoisseur battered_sphinx to discuss the journey and early musical output of one El-P. Traversing what is essentially the trifecta of late 90's / early 2000's Indie Rap. From the underground epicenter of Company Flow's "Funcrusher Plus", to the production for Definitive Jux's most famous release and group, Cannibal Ox's "The Cold Vein" and finally El-P's first solo project and his apocalyptic instrumentation peak with "Fantastic Damage". Along the way discussions are made of El-P's early machine gun-like flow, his production now compared to his newer releases and the significance of "The Cold Vein" as a staple of Underground Rap. As we entered the new millennium in 2000, I started to seriously think about finally starting my own record label. From doing my Time Travel Radio Show, being Co-Owner of Caught In The Middle Magazine, and running my Rage Promotions company, I was regularly meeting indie or unsigned artists with no outlet for their music, and I hoped I could help make a difference. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/storiesaboutsongs/support
I met Theosyn (Brad Theophila) through Hand Job Academy's Clara Bizna$$, when we met at one of her shows after she started playing solo gigs. Brad and I would later collaborate on many projects, including our parodies and "The Dewey Decibel System" with Mega Ran. This week on the podcast, we talk about the early years of mp3.com, his time at RIT and how he linked with underground rap legends Cannibal Ox. We also talk about how he balances his production work for others with his solo material, as well as how he compartmentalizes his side hustles. Thanks Brad! Special Guest: Theosyn.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!Absolute hip hop perfection this episode as Pip has a proper full length chat with rapper/producer/composer - or for brevity’s sake, half of Run The Jewels - El-P!Whether you’re familiar with El-P from his way back underground (dare I say ‘indie rap’) days of Company Flow alongside Bigg Jus and Mr Len, and of course the label Def Jux (including his sonic architecture of the Cannibal Ox album), or his solo work wearing many hats per album – OR – his present work alongside Killer Mike as 50% of Run The Jewels, you will get a ton out of this. Obviously RTJ talk is discussed, but as a fan, Pip goes in deep for the true heads and gets the background info from El’s days (bad memory not withstanding) hustling the Tower Records mailout system, freestyling on the Stretch & Bobbito show, the Rawkus days, collabos, producing for self and as a team, taking on difficult projects to get out of conventions, “delving into water”, and scoring films (like the forthcoming 'Capone'). Oh and also releasing an eerily prescient 4th RTJ album during a pandemic. If you’re familiar with El-P’s work over the years or have listened to Fantastic Damage more than a few times, you’ll understand that a pandemic is probably the perfect time for an El-related project. He might have been born yesterday sir, but he stayed up all night - it’s El-Producto!EPISODE LINKS:EL-P on TWITTERRUN THE JEWELSFANTASTIC DAMAGE reissueCAPONECOMPANY FLOW 'Funcrusher Plus'LINKS FOR SCROOBIUS PIP & SPEECH DEVELOPMENT:SCROOBIUS PIP on TWITTERSCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAMSCROOBIUS PIP on PATREONNORTH STAR RISINGPOD BIBLESPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDS DISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOKDISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAMDISTRACTION PIECES PODCAST ARCHIVE See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

....and we're back. In this episode we talk about our hiatus, quickly touch on Nispey Hussle, do a user requested review, and dig into one of James' favorite albums of all time. We've found a new home and new audio, but this one isn't quite right just yet either! Enjoy!
Def Jux! Yo! We are in the kitchen cookin up classic podcasts here...on this joint we travel back to 2001 with one of Jim's favorite joints, Cannibal Ox's "The Cold Vein." The word play is amazing and the Sci-Fi imagery is second to none. A slept on piece of hip hop is broken down here. Jim gives a special shout out to Chris over at Bier Wax (IG: bierwax), a dope bar in BK that also pays a tribute to the golden era of hip hop...the 90's.
Anthony reviews classic releases by System of a Down, Burial, Cannibal Ox, Sleater-Kinney, and The Postal Service.
This week the boys review "Won't You Be My Neighbor" and Cannibal Ox's album "Blade Of The Ronin". We talk to Daniel "Bobo" Kurlan about his brand new Christmas EP from the guys at Lobo Sound. Other subjects include the gender of Santa, a homeless character on Sesame Street, a vampire movie that takes place during Hurricane Katrina, and much more!
There are cloth mesh barriers lining the steel girders underneath the railroad bridge in downtown Wichita. The bridge, nicknamed the ‘pigeon bridge’, was a home to a roost of the birds--a few weeks before the mesh went up, live traps were placed, pocketed between beams, and the birds’ numbers dwindled. That the pigeon has a pedigree more noble than its circumstances is a fact often overlooked in discussions that center on what to do about the bird. The species is amazingly versatile, and even as a metaphor, the pigeon is a capable ally. The pigeon is the bird of the working poor, as described by Vast Aire in this song by Cannibal Ox, called ‘Pigeon’: It’s difficult to avoid comparison between the eviction of the pigeons from the Douglas Street bridge, and the renovation of Naftzger Park just across the street, which has resulted in the eviction of the unhoused or working poor that visited the park. It’s unclear where the remaining pigeons will relocate now that their flock has been
Episode 8 is our Jansport (backpack) special. A tribute to the independent hip-hop movement that helped spawn labels like Fondle ‘Em, Hydra, Rawkus, Stones Throw, Def Jux and ABB records. A time, where the internet played a major role in the music. This era allowed people to DIY, giving them an outlet never had. This movement created dreams, jobs, life-long careers and of course, some amazing music too. Speaking of music, if we covered everything this episode would be 20 hours instead of 2. We picked obscure cuts all the way to classics heard from the late 90s to the early 00s. We got everybody from Mos Def, Company Flow, MF Doom, Murs, Planet Asia, J-Live, Juggaknots, Weatherman, Saukrates, Jigmastas, Cannibal Ox, L-Fudge, Godfather Don, All Natural, Non-Phixon, Cage, Latryx, Mr. Voodoo, K-Otix, and Vakill to name a few. BANG! @southernvagard #radio keeps the hammer down with our Blueprint #interview #session ! This 90+ minute interview with Columbus, Ohio’s finest is oa doozy! We talk about his latest release, KING NO CROWN, the relentless show grind with Count Bass D last year, how he & Illogic get their cinema on for videos and the upcoming tour with Supastition this Spring/Summer. As always, we get into the early days - coming up in Columbus, meeting the MhZ cats such as Copywrite, Jakki, RJD2 and Camu Tao as well as Spitballz (RIP PRZM), and how he and the Weightless crew made that underground connect to NY via the Atoms Family and Cannibal Ox. You know we dug into that Rhymesayers lineage - Blueprint and crew were in the trenches with Slug, Eyedea, Abilities, Mr. Dibbs and the rest of the family as they conquered the Midwest and eventually the nation in the late 90s and early 2000s, and also dug into the formation of Blueprint & RJD2’s group Soul Position. For you business minded folks out there, Printmatic talks navigating the music industry today and how he is coming off his most successful year ever as a musician. Real music, real life, real stories, ya’ll - nothing more, nothing less. This week the crew welcomes Tommy and we talk rivalries. From the classic to the not so impressive, we talk about how battling is not what it used to be, the difference between beef and rivals and whether Nicki Minaj could hang with Jean Grae in a battle. We also discuss the Forbes' list of the highest paid musicians of 2012, Kendrick Lamar, Celtics vs. Nets and a possible Cannibal Ox reunion.
On this passionate, windy memoir we have: Dilated Peoples' vocal point, Evidence, takes time out from a busy studio session with The Alchemist, to offer us a deep, heart-felt reflection upon his recent life and seemingly creative hiatus. We hold a detailed discussion regarding his new 2011 solo album "Cats & Dogs", the new Dilated Peoples album "Directors Of Photography", his work on The Step Brothers project and his plans to work with Exile. In addition to the aesthetics of musical discussion, Evidence also offers real-life reasons as to why he has seemingly taken a step back from music and pinpoints his recent video for "To Be Continued" as a metaphorical hint at the way in which his life has developed over the past 12 months. He has survived beef with Eminem but are they set to collab soon? Only listening will reveal. Slaine joins us on the road to yet another live show. Classed by listeners of the live broadcast as one of our most heart-wrenching interviews to date, Slaine pulls no punches in explaining the horrendous situation he has recently found himself in with his new album "A World With No Skies". Not only was the full album bootlegged in its entirety months before its release but the consuming need to clear samples has resulted in Slaine pulling the album and revisiting the studio to recreate the entire project. We explore his work as an actor and have the rare chance to see the main motivating factors in the constant struggle of one of hip hop's most thoughtful. You can't afford to miss this. MTV Fight Klub Champion and venom-tongued powerhouse, NEMS, steps up to the plate to offer a candid exploration of his electric career and life so far. We discuss the reasons for his album setbacks and his time with Necro on Psychological Records, as well as being blessed with an evil live spit. NEMS' colourful past and frequent clashes with the Law cannot be ignored and within this interview we dissect the impact of prison on NEMS' music and writing process, as well as hearing about all of his future projects and aspirations. Always Hardcore. Kashmere is one of the UK's most original and consistent artists. His new album is set to become a modern classic, echoing the early work of Company Flow and Cannibal Ox and it was our pleasure to talk with the mind behind the madness. Rarely do UK artists that matter get a platform to explain themselves in 2010 but in this opus we dig deep discussing Kashmere's relationship with Jehst, including their forthcoming collaborative album on YNR records produced solely by The High Plains Drifter himself and much more in a refreshing and purposeful meeting. Verb T joins us live from a seedy Chinese Takeaway to explore his new musical adventure, "Serious Games". Rated as one of the most respected emcees to emerge from UK shores, Verb T explains the creative process behind the album and identifies the reasons for its varied, brave sound. Esential listening for all Verb T fans and followers. Prose are one of the UK's shining lights when it comes to solid, action-packed hip hop.Their new album is already being hailed as a UK classic and their time with us on this show is only set to cement that. With not a strip of industry red tape around them, Steady and Efeks personify their honest, heart-felt music, taking us on a journey through their rise to respect, including their recent tour support with DJ Premier and Royce Da 5'9". As warming as their very music itself - dont miss the rush. AND THAT'S NOT ALL! Menace and Montana's illness becomes so acute that at one stage on this show, both of the Official Bad Boy Duo of Rap Radio have to leave the studio in search of tissues, Andrex and nurses, only to return a few moments later with Twiglets and goosefat.
