Public Enemy frontman, Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, better known as Chuck D, spoke to Today's Amol Rajan about his new documentary “Fight the Power” explores the relationship between the Hip-hop movement, US politics and the struggles of black people in America. Chuck D also gave his take on the controversial rapper Kanye West. He talked about what motivated him to become an artist and what music means to black history.
I like to say we're living in a precedent time, not an unprecedented one. How do we understand that? Being at the museum or writing histories both in poetry and in non-fiction are ways of trying to understand that. “Gatekeepers” hold an essential role in our culture as those in positions of power who determine what we see and hear — and therefore how we understand our world. The poet Kevin Young holds dual gatekeeping roles as both director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture as well as the poetry editor for The New Yorker magazine. In this episode, Young talks about how he holds these responsibilities and likens reading a poem to entering into a museum. He also shares his belief in the power of unexpected transformations, which songs have brought him comfort, and how it's always easiest to write about the place you've just left. Sometimes we meet people that we are inexplicably drawn to, for one reason or another. For me, Michael Killik is one of those people. Killik quotes Chuck D from Public Enemy, sometimes speaks in colorful language (you've been warned) and has the word "Juggernaut" tattooed on his belly. But he's also a dad of four daughters, a doting grandfather, a proud veteran, and a mid-life entrepreneur. Michael makes Killik Hot Sauce that is fermented and naturally low in sodium (an important part of the story). He discovered a love for hot sauce while stationed in Abilene, Texas. But he didn't pursue a business until many years later after living life hard and nearly losing his life - twice. There are several over-arching messages in this episode. You'll come to your own conclusions, but I am reminded of the following simple, yet profound thoughts. Life is short. It's never too late. And you can't judge a book by its cover. Brother Ernie Paniccioli is a legendary hip hop & culture historian, humanitarian, and self-taught photographer who has been ‘documenting the culture since the start.' My first meeting with Brother Ernie was in Vancouver where he said the feeling of being seen—truly seen and known—was more alive because Indigenous people are "everywhere." Unlike in Brooklyn where he grew up eight blocks away from Biggie Smalls. In this conversation, we track the history of hip hop as a global voice—a global power—and how it can teach us to inhabit a consciousness that promotes our collective wellbeing over a collective violence that he says, knowingly, only leads to the perpetuation of more violence. Here's a quote to kick us off, "If you're gonna love Tupac, if you're gonna love Biggie, then you have to look at it through a different lens—and that lens is how do we not hurt each other? How do we not expand on that violence? How do we not relive it? They say, History's best qualified to teach you, whether it's Germany and the Holocaust or the American Native situation. Unless you know your history, you're condemned to repeat it. So, my thing is very simple: let Tupac and Biggie rest in peace, but more importantly, learn from that and learn that violence creates more violence. What you eat, what you see, and what you absorb is what you become," he says before leading us into a list of recommendations to enlighten the mind and lighten the heart. Also, special side note, if you're catching this at the time of air, Brother Ernie's work is currently being displayed at the GRAMMY Museum Experience, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The feature exhibit is called, “A Hip-Hop Life: Five Decades of Hip-Hop Music, Art and Culture" and displays early & exclusive, behind-the-scenes photos of Hip-Hop legends: Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Naughty By Nature, Lauryn Hill, the Fugees, Ice T, Chuck D, Queen Latifah, and many many more. WORKS:- Dig into the history (see Ernie's prints for sale here)- Hip Hop Hall of Fame in 2014 - Served as the chief photographer for the hip hop magazine, “Word Up!” for over 20 years- Spokesman at The United Nations for The Temple of Hip Hop during the Hip Hop Peace Conference- Published several books, including “Who Shot Ya”- Featured as the subject of the award-winning documentary, “The Other Side of Hip-Hop" TOOLS:- Stories that help guide us into a deeper knowing of ourselves- Wisdom that appeals to the importance of history, knowing it, and using it to shape the future- Spiritual truths that guide us out of violence and into regular, good fun- Legendary tales that remind us to celebrate the ones who gave us what we have today LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: BETTER is recorded on the unceded and ancestral territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples, the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, and has been stewarded by them since time immemorial. Public Enemy is the most impactful group of all time. Public Enemy. I shouldn't have to say much else. What Public Enemy has done is unique, legendary and special never to be recreated again. The force that this group is, is unmatched. It's unusual for a group or individual to have such a large impact not just on the culture but in the world. The soundtrack for change around the world lies mostly in this groups hands. Chuck D is a one of a kind lyricist, human, and culture shifter. Flavor Flav is one of the most unique characters in the world, who also changed the reality tv market as we know it. Jump into this episode to learn about these two massive individuals and the rest of the crew that made/makes up the one and only legendary Public Enemy. Thank you for everything you've contributed to the culture and the energy and flavor your contributions have given the world.

This person died in 2016, age 74. He had an agile mind, a buoyant personality, and a brash self-confidence. He was politically and socially idiosyncratic. He was never taught to read properly; years later he confided that he had never read a book, including the ones on which he collaborated. He had Parkinson's disease for more than 30 years. Situated within the current context of police brutality, for-profit prisons, and excessive incarceration rates, Am Johal sits down with educator, writer, and public scholar, Walidah Imarisha. Walidah describes her creative works involving ideas and futures of police and prison abolition, including her book Angels with Dirty Faces, and her current work developing Space to Breathe – a film that looks back on our present moment of the abolitionist movement from a future where police and prisons have been abolished. She also shares her collaboration with adrienne maree brown in the creating the Octavia's Brood, an anthology inspired out of their desire to push movement organizers beyond ideas if “realistic” change. Throughout the interview Walidah also speaks about science fiction as an avenue to inspire greater imaginings for social change, and discusses white supremacy, imperial colonialism, and white “progressiveness” within the past and present histories of Oregon and The United States. In the movie, big breasted Dolly P. and horse hung Burt R. fight pumpkin pie headed freak Dom D. while Chuck D. dances around. Also, Andy finds a used condom and tricks Jason into blowing it up like a balloon, but the joke backfires when Brian pops it and now everyone has to buy new shirts.

Today on the 4th of July, we revisit a special episode. It's been 75 years since Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball, becoming the first Black player to take the field in Major League Baseball in 1947. Jackie was a specific player chosen at a specific time, when baseball was highly aligned with Black popular culture. But what happened between baseball and Black America in the decades after Jackie's pivotal act? Why didn't baseball become a majority Black sport, like basketball and football? Why didn't MLB follow the culture into hip hop or grow its Black fan base? Jesse Washington uses his own lapsed baseball fandom to explore these questions with guests like Public Enemy's Chuck D, Jackie's son David Robinson, and current players and executives.
