Is the doctrine of the Trinity to be found in the Bible? Was Jesus really "of one substance" with God the Father? US Christian apologist James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries returns to defend the doctrine of the Trinity as he discusses key Old and New Testament texts with Sir Anthony Buzzard of the Restoration Fellowship. James believes the doctrine of the Trinity is implicit and explicit at various points throughout scripture. Anthony disagrees and claims the Doctrine of the Trinity is one of the most costly mistakes the Christian church ever made. This show was originally broadcast on 13th March 2010. This episode is an interview with Sir Anthony Buzzard, one of the most active One God believers of our time. Most listeners to this podcast will know about Sir Anthony. If by chance you don’t, you will want to become familiar with him and his work. - Anthony taught for decades at the Church of God, Abrahamic Faith Bible college, now called Atlanta Bible College. He is the author of a number of books, including The Doctrine of the Trinity, Christianity’s Self-inflicted Wound, Jesus was Not a Trinitarian, The Coming Kingdom of the Messiah, Our Fathers who Aren’t in Heaven, Who is Jesus, and more. Some of them are available for free pdf download. See the links to his books and webpage. - I wanted to ask Sir Anthony about some of the changes he has seen in the One God faith movement, and what he has thought have been, and should continue to be effective witnessing tools. - One emphasis in the podcast that I would like listeners to note is the excitement and persistence that Sir Anthony has and continues to have in sharing about the One God and His human Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. Apart from programs that may or may not be effective, I think every one of us can learn from Anthony about being excited and persistent in our sharing about the God of the Bible and His anointed, the Messiah Jesus. Be this face to face with our neighbors and others we meet, or through the modern media of the internet. - Another emphasis that Anthony makes is that we should gain experience, practice in witnessing about our faith in the one God, and this experience is gained by doing it. - We also discuss the “deity of Christ” and Jehovah’s Witness claim that “Jesus pre-existed”. - At the end of the interview, I take the liberty of sharing one other element that I believe is, or could be, essential for an effective witness to God and His Messiah. - Books: The Doctrine of the Trinity, Christianity’s Self-inflicted Wound (and more) https://focusonthekingdom.org/books/ - Website: Restoration Fellowship, Focus on the Kingdom https://focusonthekingdom.org/

In this less biographical episode, Sir Anthony and I discuss various Christian mistakes: obsession with Hebrew names for God and for Jesus, keeping kosher food laws and Jewish holidays, the doctrine of tithing, and even the avoidance of doctors (as if that showed a lack of faith in God). Another mistake was discarding the simple, messianic gospel preached by Jesus, including his Jewish theology of one God, the Father. Jesus, Sir Anthony has argued, was not a trinitarian, and we, as his disciples, shouldn't be either. He suggests that the apostle's (Jesus') creed should be ours. Another mistake: the widespread unwillingness by conservative, and especially Protestant Christians to think critically about trinitarian traditions, and specifically the 4th c. catholic consensus I discussed with Dr. Holmes in episode 42. Finally, how could divine providence allow The Church to go so wrong, for so long, on such a central matter as the doctrine of God? And if unitarian theology is true, then why 19th century unitarianism fail, morphing into a non-Christian movement. One reason (among many), we agree, is some early modern unitarians' wrongheaded denunciation of worship of and prayer to Jesus as "Christian idolatry." You can also listen to this episode on youtube. I first encountered Sir Anthony Buzzard (yes, he's a real "Sir", and his wife Barbara a "Lady") in the endnotes of Dallas Willard's The Divine Conspiracy. Willard had referred to his short book The Coming Kingdom of the Messiah. Buzzard and Willard have in common a deep grasp of the good news of the Kingdom as preached by Jesus, and the centrality of God the Father to this. I've since gotten to know him through his books, and through the yearly theological conference he organizes with Atlanta Bible College. He is a true gentleman, an inspiring Christian, and a penetrating interpreter of the Bible. He is, at heart, a Reformer, in the Radical mode. Stubborn but humble, he's one of a long line of Christians since the Reformation who've discovered that the Bible teaches the one God to be none other than the Father. Like me, he's a biblical unitarian. Here I talk with Sir Anthony about his spiritual journey, from the Church of England, to the Worldwide Church of God, to studies with Christadelphians, to his long time association with the Church of God General Conference. We also discuss his friend and one-time co-author Charles Bunting, and a few of the theological issues he has wrestled with, including Sabbath-keeping, and the literal reality of Satan. You can also listen to this episode on youtube. You can also subscribe via itunes. Next week I'll again talk with Sir Anthony about various issues, including recent "Hebrew Roots" movements, Jesus's teaching about the one God, Christian anti-intellectualism, God's allowing theological errors in mainstream Christianity, and Christian worship of Jesus. The apostle Paul famously says, ...for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. (1 Corinthians 8:6) Is this passage a radical transformation of, or a redefinition of Jewish monotheism? Is it an insertion of Jesus into the Shema confession, that "The LORD is our God, the LORD alone"? In this way, is Paul saying that Jesus is God himself, Yahweh, or that he is "in the divine identity," or at any rate that Jesus is divine? Is there, in short, some trinitarian juice that can be squeezed from this orange? Unitarian Christians don't think so. In fact, this is one of their favorite verses, even suitable for a book title. Why? Clearly, at least one side here is quite mistaken. In this episode, we hear from proponents of each side. In the next, we'll try to weigh their arguments.
