How do you talk money without losing trust—or your audience? From quarterly earnings calls to investor pitches, the world of financial communication is a tightrope walk of clarity, persuasion, and credibility. What makes numbers sound good? When does transparent/positive become too transparent/positive? And why does jargon sometimes feel like the best financial armour? Tune in for a lively dive into the art (?) of financial storytelling—with three experts sharing plenty of insights, red flags, laughs, and a nudge to rethink your next fiscal update and/or investment, especially when your are being pandered to with pathos and patriotism. Long notes: In this episode we discuss financial communication and start with readability. A few selected studies are: Bonsall, S. B., & Miller, B. P. (2017). The impact of narrative disclosure readability on bond ratings and the cost of debt. Review of Accounting Studies, 22, 608-643. Huong Dau, N., Van Nguyen, D., & Thi Thanh Diem, H. (2024). Annual report readability and firms' investment decisions. Cogent Economics and Finance, 12(1). https://doi.org/10.1080/23322039.2023.2296230 Li, F. (2008). Annual report readability, current earnings, and earnings persistence. Journal of Accounting and Economics, 45 (2-3), 221-247. Both Bernard and Erika mention PhD work on financial communication. Bernard's student Nils Smeuninx completed his thesis in 2018; the title is “Dear Stakeholder. Exploring the language of sustainability reporting: A closer look at readability, sentiment and perception”. Erika refers to a PhD study on how small investors respond to plain English as opposed to more complex or less readable text: Rennekamp, K. (2012). The complexity of qualitative accounting disclosures: Managers' choices and investors. Cornell Theses and Dissertations. https://hdl.handle.net/1813/31452 For her part, Veronika co-supervised a student - Xiaoxi Wu, now at Bocconi University in Milan (Italy) - with the Accounting department at Lancaster University (UK), resulting in this article: Koller, V., & Wu, X. (2023). Analysts' identity negotiations and politeness behaviour in earnings calls of U.S. firms with extreme earnings changes. Corporate Communications, 28(5), 769-787. DOI: 10.1108/CCIJ-08-2022-0098 Erika mentions the Juno app, which is designed to explain technical financial language to lay investors. Bernard then refers to Veronika's first foray into financial communication and narrative accounting: Merkl-Davies, D. M., & Koller, V. (2012). “Metaphoring” people out of this world: A critical discourse analysis of a chairman's statement of a UK defence firm. Accounting Forum, 36(3), 178-193. An agentless passive, the sentence ‘mistakes were made' helps to avoid blaming anyone for making mistakes. It has become a catchphrase, often used humorously to hint at disaster, including in gifs and memes Back to financial communication: Referring to the gendered metaphors that it often features, Erika mentions this book chapter: Boggio, C., Fornero, E., Prast, H., & Sanders, J. (2017). Seven ways to knit your portfolio: Is investor communication neutral? In Garzone, G., Catenaccio, P., Grego, K., & Doerr, R. (eds) Specialised and Professional Discourse Across Media and Genres (pp. 137-160). Ledizioni. A cross-cultural study into accounting language is Doupnik, T. S. and Richter, M. (2004), The impact of culture on the interpretation of in-context verbal probability expressions. Journal of International Accounting Research, 3(1), 1-20. In the first part of the episode, we also discuss tone as an important concept in financial communication. Intriguingly, media studies have shown that coverage in itself is good enough for the so-called “markets” (investors, analysts, fund managers) to have a positive attitude towards a company: Engelberg, J. E., & Parsons, C. A. (2011). The causal impact of media in financial markets. Journal of Finance, 66(1), 67-97. Finally, the 2019 annual report by Lockheed Martin, which includes the CEO statement that we analyse at the end of the episode. For more details make sure you visit our blog! In this episode, Dr. Ettensohn draws heavily on his own research concerning pathological narcissism and attachment patterns, using attachment theory as a lens to focus explanatory power onto the often confusing dynamics of NPD. Beginning with a general overview of Bartholomew's four-prototype model of adult attachment, Dr. Ettensohn identifies the most common attachment patterns of individuals with NPD. He describes the relevant research on the development of these patterns and draws parallels with descriptions of early care deficits thought to cause pathological narcissism. The root concept of “learning styles” is based on a simple and intuitive idea: different people most successfully learn through different means. Or maybe they best learn through different sensory or emotional inputs. Possibly because people with differing brains make them more receptive to certain ways of knowing and absorbing information. Some people managed to take this intuitive idea and build massively successful careers for decades. Students were labeled “Visual,” “Aural,” or “Kinesthetic” learners. The problem, as researchers discovered in the ‘00s, is that there's no good evidence to suggest that any of the “learning styles” models popular with teachers actually improved educational outcomes. But that did little to slow the popularity of learning styles — or the mini industry built up around them. 18+ years out from the religion of my birth, it all sometimes can still feel strange. Was that really me? Really my life? Really all my decisions, then and since? I spend an hour here talking about what led me out of the Jehovah's Witnesses, and taking a much-needed walk down memory lane. We get into some interesting questions, and especially: What is it that's so interesting about why someone leaves, and how long ago? I owe a lot of people a lot of gratitude, too many to name, but as promised in the show notes: -For excellent resources on mental health and leaving Cults and similar abusive groups (be they political or religious), Combating Cult Mind Control is a fantastic book by Steve Hassan. https://freedomofmind.org The (somewhat famous) exJW I reference is Randy Watters; no links as I am no longer sure what he's doing or his situation. The lifesaving author I reference is Greg Stafford; his book '3 Dissertations on the teachings of Jehovah's Witnesses' is no longer in print that I am aware of, but we will read all or most of it here. As always, a quick rating here on Spotify or wherever you're listening would be enormously appreciated, plus a follow on any of my social links. In this week's episode Patrick and Greg enlist the help of six quantitative methodological scholars, who share a wide variety of fertile ground for quantitative research, which should be useful for students seeking dissertation topics as well as anyone interested in active methodological areas. Along the way they also mentioned: Kill Bill, The Waltons (with corpses), taking away grandpa's car keys, needing an avocado, Patrick's paygrade, clean-up hitters, unhinged Tweeting, promiscuous models, meercats, cantankerously frequentist, who needs data, and combining with Jordan for 70 points. On this no holds barred episode we woke up today over it! lol Over life's silly daily madness! So, we decided that this episode should be spent talking about life's frustrations of all average regular working people, who put up with all the social media hysteria, political upheaval, and entitled attitudes in our culture and society today. We tlak about the madness of the political right, and how we must foster better attitudes and policies if we're going to beat authoritarian craziness. Lastly, we talk about the UAP/UFO phenomenon, and what our end game about that is.Please support the show!https://linktr.ee/chefbrycomedyChef Bry Comedy | Twitter, Instagram, Facebook | Linktree Hosted on Acast. Often, when we think of moving the equity needle on our campuses, we talk in terms of implicit bias, diverse representation and personal responsibility. We don't often connect it to data. Data tells you which teachers are having discipline referral problems within certain populations. Data tells you which teachers are closing gaps for Black and Brown students more quickly. Data tells you which apps are positively impacting intervention and extension for special populations. For example, because ST math is a game based program that requires no language based skills, it works well for ELs and students who are reading below grade level. How are we using data to create equitable learning environments? Male students typically have more office referrals. Is it that boys are "bad" or is it that schools have designed a system for sedentary, compliant learning while socializing boys to be anything but sedentary and compliant? Using a Strength Based Lens How do we use the information we have to drive action? First, find out what's working, and which teachers are succeeding. Use peer observations to build cultural competencies across your campuses and districts. Add accountability discussions and mentoring to learning walks so that you can impact student learning and behavioral outcomes by replicating behaviors and strategies of successful teachers. I'll be talking more to administrators the rest of this year about campus and district equity initiatives, and how to move them from reflection to data driven action. Hemophilia B is a rare inherited X-linked disorder characterized by a congenital anomaly in the factor IX gene leading to a variable deficiency in clotting factor IX. In this episode, we explore the known differences between Hemophilia B and Hemophilia A and discuss priority areas for further research into Hemophilia B. The episode also guides listeners on an entertaining journey through 19th and 20th century European monarchy and the unlikely role that hemophilia played in forever shaping Europe's governance! The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy
Therapy for Executives and Emerging Leaders Curt and Katie chat about how therapists can support leaders. We look at optimal leadership, leadership identity development, barriers for emerging leaders, challenges that executives face, and how therapists can support these leaders. We explore specific interventions and career assessment questions. This is a continuing education podcourse. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode we explore how therapists can help leaders During times of turmoil - like a global pandemic, an unstable economy, and social unrest - we want to be able to rely on our leaders to help us weather the storm. We look to our employers, our legislators, and our community leaders to solve problems and remain calm. But who supports our leaders? It's important for therapists to understand leadership and the unique challenges that leaders face, so they can help. Further, therapists must be available to provide support to emerging leaders who are coming from much more diverse backgrounds and perspectives who may need help navigating a system that doesn't always accept them or align with their lived experiences. We talk about leader identity development and how leaders develop over time. We look at common barriers and challenges for leaders at all stages of development as well as suggested interventions to address these needs. What do therapists get wrong when working with leaders? “We may be hindering folks that we don't see as leaders based on what we know about them: either their identity and the kind of the societal bias, or based on what we know about how much they're struggling. And so, we won't be able to help these folks move into these positions of leadership and help them elevate themselves in that way.” – Katie Vernoy, LMFT Therapists don't include career assessments and leadership assessment Understanding the interrelation between work and mental health Bias related to stereotypical leaders and not seeing leadership where it shows up outside of able-bodied, tall, white men The calm, peaceful, work-life balance versus optimal performance and ambition Cosigning on poor work behavior and overwork What is good leadership? Leadership can be taught and can be beneficial for every client Concepts of leadership as a process and a position Interdependent, collaborative Servant Leadership Transformational Leadership What does leadership identity development look like? The 6 stages of the model created by Komives, et al. Moving from identifying leaders, understanding positional leadership, then moving to more of a process and interdependent relationship How leadership identity development impacts adult clients What impacts emerging leaders? Identities, especially marginalized identities Relationships with authority figures Resources, privilege within typical leadership development opportunities during childhood and early adulthood Relational trauma, boundaries, communication Marginalized identities and stereotypes with no sure-fire way to perform acceptably Lack of safety and empowerment Career and Leadership Assessment “Oftentimes, these stereotypes [related to marginalized identities] can really hit someone, and that can get in the way of them being able to be a good leader. First off, because they're not given the positions. But it's also something where they're navigating these stereotypes and having to twist themselves into pretzels, in order to fit in that little tiny line that is between ‘too much' and ‘too little'.” – Katie Vernoy, LMFT Career trajectory Leadership identity development stage Current employment Work/life balance Role of work in client's life and within family system Therapists Working with Leaders Life experience that therapists can draw upon Identifying what you don't know Understand your own work trauma and leadership development The CHAT Model (or Katie's model: clarify, imagine, simplify, act) Our Generous Sponsors for this episode of the Modern Therapist's Survival Guide: Thrizer Thrizer is a new modern billing platform for therapists that was built on the belief that therapy should be accessible AND clinicians should earn what they are worth. It is very quick to get set up and it works great in completement with EHR systems. Their team is super helpful and responsive, and the founder is actually a long-time therapy client who grew frustrated with his reimbursement times The best part is you don't need to give up your rate. They charge a standard 3% payment processing fee! Thrizer lets you become more accessible while remaining in complete control of your practice. A better experience for your clients during therapy means higher retention. Money won't be the reason they quit on therapy. This 1956 march was a protest against pass laws that were part of South Africa's system of apartheid – and specifically the requirement that women carry passes. Dissertations are a massive undertaking. Many say it's the equivalent of writing a book. In order to obtain a Doctorate Degree, it's one of the things you have to complete. For Matt Millsap, he wrote his dissertation on the theological engagement of video games. You read that right. We also spend some time discussing the preservation of games, US copyright law, and Nintendo's ever persistent problem of forsaking their legacy. The 1830s were a time of great religious enthusiasm across the United States and saw scores of ladies take up the call to travel from place to place, preaching faith, repentance, and the coming of judgment. Among these women was the New Hampshire-born Nancy Towle, who traveled across the United States and the British Isles. A fiery preacher with a will of iron, she let anyone within earshot hear her message of repentance-- a message that could, at times, sound like harangues, brimstone, and torrents of abuse. On today's episode, we explore:- Her 1818 call to join the small but determined band of female itinerant preachers;- Her 1829 mission to England and Ireland- Her arrest for obstructing the roads and disturbing the peace and the thrill at the prospect of being jailed "for Christ Jesus' sake" - Her sea voyage on a "floating hell," with a narrow escape from being thrown overboard by a "merciless, accursed crew" - Her efforts to get into the infamous Newgate Prison and preach to the prisoners under sentence of death- Her observations of three young Englishmen hanged for forgery and housebreaking- Her prophesy against the English Nobility - Her confrontation with early Latter-day Saint Leaders Martin Harris, William W. Phelps, Sidney Rigdon, and Joseph Smith.
