By the mid-70's the Beach Boys appeared to be a band that had been left behind. Sales had been only moderate for their previous albums, and the band was struggling to determine their direction musically. In the summer of 1973 the movie "American Graffiti" featured several Beach Boys songs, creating nostalgia for the earlier surfing music.Between the revived interest sparked by "American Graffiti" and the success of the Beatles "Red" and "Blue" compilation albums, the Beach Boys released a collection of hits from their early 60's catalogue called Endless Summer. This featured songs from their Capitol Records days, 1962-1965. It was a near-instant success reaching the top of the charts in the United States four months after its release, and becoming their second number 1 album on the US charts. After the success of Endless Summer, the Beach Boys would reposition themselves as an oldies act, continuing in this vein for many years. Brian Wilson would pen one further Beach Boys studio album in 1977 which would meet with meager sales. Afterwards the band would focus on their classics until seeing a resurgence in the late 80's generated from another popular film, Tom Cruise's "Cocktail" Wayne brings us this surfin' themed compilation for this week's podcast. Catch A WaveA true surfing song, this tune is about being on a surfboard, waiting for the right wave to come along. This song was originally released on the 1963 album "Surfer Girl," and a rewritten version was recorded by Jan and Dean as "Sidewalk Surfin."Little Deuce CoupeThis track is about a 1932-vintage Ford model 18 hot rod used in drag racing on the streets of California. "American Graffiti" had featured the deuce coupe prominently, along with the Beach Boys song. The lyrics were written by local radio DJ Roger Christian.Shut DownAnother song about drag racing, "shut down" means you are about to beat the person in the race. The phrase "tach it up" may have lost some meaning in the era of automatic transmission, but the tachometer would run high for a drag race. The song is told from the perspective of the driver of a 1963 Corvette Sting Ray in a race against a 1962 Dodge Dart.Fun, Fun, FunThe inspiration for this song was a story the Beach Boys heard during a radio interview. The station owner described his daughter "borrowing" his 1963 Thunderbird to go to a drive-in hamburger shop. The opening riffs were inspired by Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Uptown Saturday Night by Dobie Gray (from the motion picture “Uptown Saturday Night”)Sidney Poitier starred in and directed this action comedy which co-starred Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Richard Pryor, and Flip Wilson. STAFF PICKS:The Joker by the Steve Miller BandLynch leads off the staff picks with a well known song from Steve Miller. The names in the first line reference several of Miller's previous songs, as well as the made-up word "pompatus." It barely cracked the top 40 in the US, hitting 40 on the Billboard Hot 100. Miller borrowed some lyrics from the song "Lovey Dovey" when he talks about wanting to "shake your tree."The Air that I Breathe by the HolliesRob brings us a slow burning but iconic ballad that the Hollies covered. The original was from Albert Hammond, and previously covered by Phil Everly. The Hollies version was the most successful, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Alan Parsons was the engineer on this song.Hollywood Swinging by Kool & the GangBruce's staff pick is the first number 1 R&B Single from Kool & the Gang. It was a crossover hit as well, going to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rick Westfield is the keyboardist for it and sings lead. The song is a true story of the keyboardist wanting to become "a bad piano-playing man" with the group. Rock and Roll Heaven by The Righteous BrothersWayne's features an ode to the rock stars who had died at an early age. This song is another example of a song that was covered, and did better than the original. Climax performed this song in 1973 but did not chart, while the Righteous Brothers took it to the top 10 in the United States. Lyric would be added in the years to come as more rock stars passed. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Chameleon by Herbie HancockThis jazz funk instrumental track closes out the podcast for the week. This was one of my favorite conversations over the last year or so. Figured it'd be nice to share it again... We are joined in this episode by Writer, Producer, Actor and Mentor, LARRY WILMORE! We discussed what drew Larry to comedy, writing, acting and producing; and, yes, we did talk about the WGA strike; why, as a kid, he was compelled by the work of such greats as Houdini, Buster Keaton, the Marx Brothers and Flip Wilson; rebounding from professional setbacks and keeping a healthy mindset; his thoughts on the "TP&R question" - how to be better at talking about politics and religion across our differences; and we got pretty deep with the concept of consciousness, meaning and why humans have a desire to have a life of meaning. Emmy Award winner Larry Wilmore is a prolific producer, actor, comedian, and writer. He is also the host of the excellent podcast Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air. Larry is perhaps best known for his role as host of Comedy Central's The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and as the “Senior Black Correspondent” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Off-screen, Larry serves as co-creator and consulting producer on HBO's Insecure, and helped to launch ABC's black-ish as an executive producer and is a co-creator of the spin-off Grownish. Previously, he has written for In Living Color, The PJ's (which he co-created), The Office (on which he also appeared), and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also served as creator, writer, and executive producer of The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him his Emmy for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” and a 2001 Peabody Award. In 2016, Larry hosted the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. Larry is also an author, having released his first book, I'd Rather We Got Casinos and Other Black Thoughts, in January 2009. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
The one and only Flip Wilson was one of the funniest and most important stars of the 60s and 70s. Not only did he host a top-rated variety show, break barriers for African-American artists, and create some of the most memorable characters in comedy history, but he also changed the face of television variety shows forever. Flip Wilson only hosted Saturday Night Live once, and while it wasn't a particularly memorable episode, it represented a specific time in SNL's history and had some great moments. In this episode, you'll hear Flip's brief and somewhat odd monologue, along with a couple of funny sketches and the stories behind some of Wilson's greatest creations. Nick also shares behind-the-scenes tales and background stories about Flip's work, including his collaboration with the legendary Richard Pryor. You'll hear an outstanding piece of comedy from The Flip Wilson Show, showcasing their incredible talents, and more. A true comedy legend hosted SNL, and you'll hear all about it in this episode of That Show... [Ep95]

"TV's first Black super star"
In the 1960s, I believe it was comedian Flip Wilson who coined the phrase, "Here comes the judge!" He used it often in his routines. Today, in Jesus' parable, a widow seeks justice against her adversaries from a judge but barely finds it. The Lord promises that justice will come quick when he returns to the earth. Will God's children be spared? Will they also be judged? How will they be judged? Find out.
Even though God is not the one tempting us, He allows us to be tempted, as we discover through the story of Job. It's hard for us to fully understand why God would give permission for Job to experience such sorrow, loss, and hardship. But we do see through Job's testimony, many truths about God are revealed, and He is glorified. SUBSCRIBE to our sister podcasts:Your Daily Prayer: https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-prayer/Your Daily Bible Verse: https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-bible-verse/ Full Transcript Below: 3 Steps to Take When Facing Temptation By Lynette Kittle “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you”-- James 4:7 In the 1960s and 1970s, comedian Flip Wilson created a character named Geraldine, who coined the phrase “The devil made me do it,” whenever she wanted to do anything wrong. His portrayal of human nature, to blame our sins on the devil, hit home and made people laugh at the truth of it. Although, like Geraldine, many of us also like to blame the devil for our sins, James 1:14 explains, “But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed.” Even though we try to push it off on the devil to take the fall for our misconduct, God calls us to take responsibility for it. Like James 1:15 describes, going from temptation to sin is a growing process within us. “Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” If Evil Desires Lead to Temptation, How Was Jesus Able to Be Tempted? Unlike us, who have been born with sin residing within us, Jesus wasn't led to temptation by an inward desire because He had no sin. Matthew 4:1 explains, “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” Although He was led by the Holy Spirit, God was not the one tempting Jesus. James 1:13 explains how, “When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone.” Jesus shows us how to submit to God by submitting to His word, as He did when tempted. Each time the devil tempted Him by distorting the truth about God, Jesus corrected him with the truth of God's word. Who Tempts Us? Like 1 Peter 5:8 warns, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” As Job 2:2 describes, “And the Lord said to Satan, ‘Where have you come from?' Satan answered the Lord, ‘From roaming throughout the earth, going back and forth on it.'” Even though God is not the one tempting us, He allows us to be tempted, as we discover through the story of Job. It's hard for us to fully understand why God would give permission for Job to experience such sorrow, loss, and hardship. But we do see through Job's testimony, many truths about God are revealed, and He is glorified. Isaiah 55:8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. 3 Steps to Take It seems submitting to God is the difficult part of resisting the devil, because when we are willing to do so, the fleeing part comes easy. Following are three steps to take when facing temptations that will help us submit to God. Rely on the faithfulness of God. 1 Corinthians 10:13 encourages us that “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” Don't depend on your own strength. Some temptations may seem so strong and attractive, that it doesn't seem humanly possible for us to resist them, which is true; if we try to depend on our own strength, we'll surely fall into them. Like Proverbs 3:5 instructs, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” We need to resist thinking that we can handle temptations on our own, because we cannot. Philippians 4:13 directs us where to turn for that strength. “I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.” Believe that God will give you a way out. When God allows us to be tempted, He promises it doesn't have the power to overtake us unless we let it, because He will provide a way out. In times of temptation, we can believe what God has said and turn to Him, believing what He has assured us, that He will lead us out of temptation, like Jesus prayed, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13). Intersecting Faith & Life: If you're facing temptations in your life this week, ask God to stop them from growing into sin and death, trusting Him to help you submit to Him through the three steps discussed. We begin our Richard Pryor Show journey here, in 1974, with a Flip Wilson special. Produced by Lorne Michaels a full year before SNL started and only a few months after Flip's show had ended, it acts as a sort of passing of the torch moment from the old guard to the new guard. Too bad it never really comes together in any cohesive way...and too bad William is dead.

Welcome to a new season of Gayest Episode Ever. It will be a Saturday Night Live-centric season. Among the regular, sitcom-focused episodes, we will be doing periodic deep dives into the LGBTQ-focused sketches that ran on the show during its various eras. To kick it off (and to kick off the new season), we are starting with a two-part look at the various queer-adjacent recurring sketches from SNL. This first episode covers the launch of the show until the mid-90s, and next week's episode will get us through the current era. Enjoy? Maybe? It's a lot to take in, honestly, but we swear it's worth discussion. Here are this episode's sketches: Anita Bryant (s5e16 — Burt Reynolds, April 12, 1980) Dion (s9e8 — Flip Wilson, December 10, 1983) Nancy Reagan (s11e2 — John Lithgow, November 16, 1985) Coffee Talk (s16e13 — Roseanne Barr & Tom Arnold, February 2, 1989) It's Pat (s17e3 — Kirstie Alley, October 12, 1991) Lyle the Effeminate Heterosexual (s17e16 — Mary Stuart Masterson, March 21, 1992) Mickey the Dyke (s22e8 — Martin Short, December 7, 1996) Ambiguously Gay Duo (s23e20 — David Duchovny, May 9, 1998) Jeffrey's (s26e12 — Sean Hayes, February 2, 2001) Mango (s27e9 — Ellen DeGeneres, December 15, 2001) You can watch the sketches on Patreon. GGACP marks the 40th anniversary of one of Gilbert's "favorite" gigs, the infamous late-night talk show "Thicke of the Night" (premiered September 5, 1983) with this ENCORE of a 2014 interview with actor, writer and producer Alan Thicke. In this episode, Alan reminisces about everything from his short-lived disco career to penning variety specials for Johnny Cash, Bobby Darin and Flip Wilson. Also, Alan and Gilbert swap wives, John Lennon praises commercial jingles, Merv Griffin composes the "Wheel of Fortune" theme and Paul Lynde drives into a ditch. GGACP salutes the life and career of our friend, Emmy-winning writer and producer Norman Steinberg, by revisiting this memorable conversation from 2016. In this episode, Norman talks about his friendships with Mel Brooks, Harvey Korman and Madeline Kahn, collaborating with Richard Pryor and George Carlin and co-scripting the (arguably) funniest movie of all time, "Blazing Saddles." Also, Norman remembers Peter O'Toole, praises Flip Wilson, accepts an award from Jimmy Durante and ends Luciano Pavarotti's film career. PLUS: "My Favorite Year"! "When Things Were Rotten"! Today on Boston Public Radio: We started off the show by asking listeners about their financial concerns following the U.S. bank failures. Jennifer Nassour & Jesse Mermell joined for a political panel and discussed Sen. Elizabeth Warren's comment on Boston Public Radio that made national headlines regarding her support for President Joe Biden's reelection. When asked if she would support Vice President Kamala Harris on the 2024 ticket, she said, “I really want to defer to what makes Biden comfortable on his team.” Soon after, she told GBH News that she “fully” supports a Biden-Harris ticket. Boston Globe columnist Renée Graham joined to discuss her latest columns, from Fox News and Tucker Carlson's “big lies” to growing watching and loving the drag character Geraldine Jones played by Flip Wilson. She would even be allowed to stay up past her bedtime to watch this show. Matt Ruskin wrote and directed Hulu's new movie focused on the two women who broke the Boston Strangler story. He came on Boston Public Radio ahead of the release next week of “Boston Strangler” for a spoiler-free peek into the making of the film. He talks about how he got interested in the story and his respect for journalism. The Revs. Irene Monroe and Emmett G. Price III discussed lawmakers reconsidering the secrecy of the confessional, Pope Francis' statement on celibacy requirements and today marking 10 years since Francis was elected to be head of the Catholic Church. Boston Globe's film critic Odie Henderson talked about the Oscars and getting 16 out of 23 of his predicted winners right. He shares how watching the Oscars brings people together. We wrapped up the show by discussing single-use plastic bags vs reusable tote bags. A new CNN story reports that it takes about 7,100 uses for a reusable bag to be environmentally friendly.
On this episode we go back to the wild and wonderful 1970's to take a look at The Flip Wilson Show! Flip Wilson is one of those comedians that made a huge dent in comedy during his time but has since been largely forgotten. We're not sure why considering he had one of the most popular variety shows on TV for five years and had a guest list that would blow your mind. He could go toe to toe with any number of popular comedians from the time but so many people don't remember his name. We're here to change that! Flip Wilson, television's first Black superstar, hosted his own variety show that rose to the top of American TV ratings. He united the world to the sound of laughter while snatching a slew of industry awards. But while he enjoyed audience adoration on-stage, Flip struggled with trauma and addiction in his personal life. Yet his enduring work paved the way for more groundbreaking shows, like Sanford and Son, that continued to expand horizons and opportunities for Black comics on the small screen.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
