SHOW NOTES: Welcome back to The Money Pit! It's mid-September, and with so much happening, it's easy to get sidetracked from your home projects. But don't worry, we're here to help you keep things working and organized. We've got a great show lined up for you today, with topics that include: - Extending Outdoor Fun with Patio Heaters: Just because it's fall doesn't mean your outdoor enjoyment has to stop! We'll explore how patio heaters can keep you entertaining, dining, and relaxing outside even as temperatures drop. - Decoding Spooky Home Sounds: With Halloween just around the corner, you might be hearing some mysterious bangs, pops, scratches, or whistles around the house. We'll decode these top mystery noises of the season, explain what they really mean, and show you how to fix them before they give you the creeps! - Saving Money on Your Water Heater: Your water heater might be silently draining your wallet. We'll share smart ways to cut energy costs, reduce water waste, and keep your hot water flowing efficiently, plus tell you how to score up to $600 in tax credits for making a smart upgrade.   Q & A: - Marcus in Louisiana asks about thermal barriers for his attic. We confirm that these radiant barriers do work by reflecting heat, but require proper perpendicular and clean installation to be effective. - Ellie in Wisconsin is celebrating a new home and wants to install wall shelving in her bathrooms. We encourage her DIY spirit, with advice on suitable anchors for lighter items in drywall and the importance of matching anchor ratings to the shelf's weight. - Matt in Ohio is struggling with recurring mold in his shower. We identify improper ventilation and persistent moisture as the likely culprits, recommending a humidistat and antimicrobial caulk after managing the moisture issue. - Dan in Maryland has greasy kitchen cabinets above his stove and asks for cleaning recommendations. We recommend using Murphy's Oil Soap with warm water and microfiber cloths, along with a gentle abrasive pad for tougher spots. - Brad emailed us about building a large patio roof and asked about overlapping it with his existing house roof without connecting. We strongly advise against overlapping as a standalone structure, instead recommending securely tying the patio roof into the house for structural integrity. - Andrew, also via email, reported thunder-like vibrating sounds from the copper pipes in his basement after a new water heater was installed. We attributed this to loose pipes causing a "water hammer" effect and suggested securing them with brackets.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? PLMA Awards Webinar: CPUC + Energy Solutions on the TECH Clean California Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) ProgramA 2025 PLMA Award of Excellence Winner, TECH Clean California, launched by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), promotes clean heating technologies through incentives for heat pump water heater (HPWH) installations. The program has funded over 15,000 installations resulting in significant greenhouse gas savings. As of October 2023, new mandates required that HPWH customers also enroll in demand response programs. To enable this, the team provided additional education to contractors which has led to high enrollment rates. In December 2024, the contractors were asked to provide “proof of enrollment” for their installations which has continued to enhance program participation and contractor engagement. Today, the HPWH contractors are  evolving into demand response leaders in their own right.

Florida Man Allegedly Kills Woman During Date at Resort, Conceals Body in Water Heater Closet, Authorities Say A Florida man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing a woman during a meeting at a resort hotel in the Florida Keys and attempting to conceal the crime. Dylan Lamb, 33, was arrested in connection with the death of 43-year-old Nadyne Marie Tillman, whose body was discovered in a closet at the Amoray Dive Resort in Key Largo on Monday. According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a missing persons report at the resort and found Tillman's body hidden under a water heater. She had been brutally beaten to death. Lamb, who had been on probation for a previous grand theft conviction, allegedly met Tillman through a sex solicitation website. Investigators learned from Tillman's friend that she had texted about meeting a man at the resort on Saturday morning but was never heard from again after saying “I'm in” when Lamb opened the door. A resort employee confirmed Lamb rented the room through Expedia and provided his mother's phone number. He had checked into the room Friday night but refused to switch rooms when hotel staff attempted to relocate him. Lamb vacated the room on Sunday, leaving behind three large trash bags filled with soiled towels and linens, which were later described as heavily stained with blood, urine, and feces. Unfortunately, hotel staff disposed of the bags without alerting authorities, and the dumpster containing them is now gone. Tillman's family grew concerned after she failed to respond to messages, leading her daughter to trace her car to the resort. Police were alerted, and the body was discovered shortly after. Lamb's parole officer confirmed he had met with him the day before the discovery. Detectives arrested Lamb at his job as a kayak instructor. During questioning, Lamb admitted to paying Tillman $200 for sex but claimed she tried to leave without fulfilling her end of the agreement. Lamb alleged that he blocked the door to stop her, and she began hitting him. He said he only hit her once in the face, causing her to fall, hit her head, and lose consciousness. Lamb then claimed he went to the bathroom to calm down and returned to find her not breathing. He said he panicked, tried to clean up the scene, and hid her body in the water heater closet. Lamb also disposed of Tillman's cellphone and the soiled linens. However, investigators found that Tillman's injuries were inconsistent with Lamb's account, revealing multiple facial injuries, including two black eyes and a busted lip. In addition to murder, Lamb faces charges of kidnapping, destruction of evidence, and procuring a prostitute. He remains in Monroe County Jail without bond as the investigation continues. SHOW NOTES: Today, we discuss patio heaters to help you extend your outdoor season and address whether squeaky floors are a sign of a bigger issue, along with tips for fixing them. We also share energy-saving strategies for your water heater to cut down energy bills. Listen as we answer these and other home improvement questions! - Squeaky Floors: Follow these steps to find solutions for squeaky floors. - Patio Heaters: Extend your outdoor living season with patio heater options for year-round comfort. - Water Heaters: Soak up the savings with these water heater efficiency tips.   Q & A: - Cleaning Cabinets: Dan is trying to clean the grease off cabinets above the stove and microwave. We've got tips on how to use Murphy's Oil Soap to clean the cabinets. - Water Quality: Linda sees black particles in the water from her toilet and sink. We suggest cleaning the aerators on the faucet and installing a whole-house water filter. - Pine Flooring: Daniel is installing pine flooring on his porch. We agree with his idea of staining the planks beforehand and offer tips on what fasteners to use. - Brick Repair: One corner of the brick foundation is crumbling. Katherine gets advice on using products to repair the brick and mortar and matching the color of the surface. - Driveway Runoff: Rain runoff on the sides of Randy's driveway is exposing PVC pipe. We recommend digging out the dirt and filling the area with gravel that won't wash away. - Wasps: Gail is having a problem with wasps on the side of her house. Sticky wasp traps can be very effective, along with spraying strong scents that will repel the wasps. - HVAC: Is it a good idea to replace an oil furnace with a heat pump? It can be expensive to replace the furnace and remove the oil tank, but improved heat pump technology has become less expensive and more efficient to use. - Snow on Roof: Will putting a tarp over a log cabin roof help prevent snow buildup? It's not that effective unless the snow is dry and light, and LaDonna will still need to use a roof rake. - Central Vacuum: Water is appearing inside the central vacuum system pipes. Sean needs to insulate the pipes completely to prevent condensation from forming.   ASK A QUESTION: Need help with your own home improvement or décor question? We'd love to help!
