Michael Jackson celebrated his very first Christmas holiday in 1993. Having grown up a devout Jehovah's Witness, Michael once said that because of his religious upbringing, he was taught to never celebrate Christmas or any other holiday. However, that all changed when, at the age of 35, Michael Jackson celebrated his first Christmas, courtesy of one of his truest friends, and Hollywood icon, Elizabeth Taylor. Episode 158: Depeche Mode - Memento Mori (2023) - Part 2 (Featuring Andrew Dineley of "Art on Your Sleeve" and The Sly Dog of "The Sly Dog Music-Cast") Andrew Dineley ("Art on Your Sleeve") and Sly Dog ("Sly Dog Music Cast") are back to finish the discussion on Depeche Mode's 21st century classic, "Memento Mori." In this episode, the four hosts answer the question on everyone's lips: Does the ghost of Pete Burns haunt the streets of Liverpool? But after getting back on track, they also cover the second-half of the album, including beloved songs like "Before We Drown", "Always You", and "Speak to Me." Are we experiencing a Depeche Mode renaissance? That question will be answered at the end of the episode when the four critics collaborate to rank it for its Final Evaluation! Episode 155: Depeche Mode - Memento Mori (2023) - Part 1 (Featuring Andrew Dineley of "Art on Your Sleeve" and The Sly Dog of "The Sly Dog Music-Cast") The reviews are in and it seems that most critics love Depeche Mode's 15th studio album, "Memento Mori." From the joyous pop sounds of first single "Ghosts Again" to the throwback 70's aura of "Soul with Me" to the James Bondian "Don't Say You Love Me", the band does indeed sound re-energized and ready to conquer the world in 2023. Devotees Brian & Sarah are joined by Andrew Dineley of the "Art on Your Sleeve" podcast and The Sly Dog of "The Sly Dog Music-Cast" on a journey through the album's 12 tracks and all parties are prepared to pepper the discussion with facts and opinions on these new songs. Andrew is a fan who has followed the band since their debut on the "Some Bizarre" compilation, but who moved away from them as they turned more conventional and more "rock 'n roll" in the 21st century. The Sly Dog is a younger fan, with an interest in many genres of music, who discovered the band within the last decade and caught up with their "glory days" after the fact. Sarah is a loyal fan who nevertheless has recently expressed disappointment with the group's recent (re the last 20 years) penchant for mid-tempo tunes with odd percussion. And Brian is a loyal member of the Black Swarm who feels bad saying that even songs like "The Child Inside" and "Peace" "...aren't really that good." Together, the four hosts will cover the first half of the album, including the already-classic "Ghosts Again", as the journey through "Memento Mori" begins! Songs Covered in this episode: My Cosmos is Mine Wagging Tongue Ghosts Again Don't Say You Love Me My Favourite Stranger Soul with Me Add more Andrew Dineley to your life by listening to "Art on Your Sleeve": https://softoctopus.co.uk/podcast/ Explore the world of the Sly Dog by listening to "The Sly Dog Music-Cast": https://slydogmusiccast.podbean.com/ Join "Art on Your Sleeve" on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/442664446671424 Join "The Sly Dog Music-Cast" on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063551979539 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Read more at http://www.permanentrecordpodcast.com/ Visit us at https://www.facebook.com/permrecordpodcast Follow us at https://twitter.com/permrecordpod Check out some pictures at https://www.instagram.com/permanentrecordpodcast/ Leave a voicemail for Brian & Sarah at (724) 490-8324 or https://www.speakpipe.com/PermRecordPod - we're ready to believe you!
This week's episode deviates from the normal Lit Match episode structure in order to honor the life of Abigail's aunt, Gail Hayes, who was a talented writer, devoted mother and wife, and active fundraiser—some of her many roles in life. Gail (who Abigail called Gigla or Gig) passed away on January 24, 2023 from Glioblastoma (brain tumor) after courageously fighting this disease for 21-months. In this episode, Abigail pulls her interview with Gail from her first podcast, Story Effect. She interviews Gail about four dominant story-influences on her life, which include THE CRICKET IN TIMES SQUARE, her favorite book, and three of Gail's favorite songs. All of these explore Gail's love for music and how it has an innate ability to connect, inspire, and educate people—even transcend language, although Gail focuses on the words and messages in the book and songs to discuss why they influenced her. Following the interview, Abigail pulls 5 big takeaways and explains why they can teach and inspire writers. With each takeaway, Abigail provides a writing exercise or writing tip(s) that writers can immediately apply to their craft and WIP (work-in-progress). So, writing friends, take out your notebooks! This episode offers both life and writing lessons you won't want to miss—and all from a kindred spirit who possessed a magical ability to simplify words in powerful and meaningful ways. You thought this was your grandfather's regular old podcast. Oh, but it's so much more than that. Because once you slip inside, you find yourself transported to a magical world. A world where time doesn't exist. A world of prehistoric rebels, terrible Mel Gibson films, skank pits and five legendary and mythical songs from the triple j hottest 100 countdown of 2000. Look, the real moral of the story here is back your stuff up because otherwise a perfectly good episode gets lost and another gets recorded with far more cursed bits in it, alright? Shut up and eat your Turkish delight. Special thanks to Elliot from The Simpsons Index and Sidequest Studios for assistance in recording this episode. SONGS COVERED: 95.
