He co-founds and christens the neo-psychedelic pop group The Teardrop Explodes with Julian Cope but walks out of the band just as they are about to break big and goes to work in a tearoom instead. He then forms The Wild Swans, the indie-band of choice for literary-minded teens in the early 1980s, and Care with Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds, sharing a flat with a seventeen-year-old Courtney Love along the way. Marriage, fatherhood, tropical illness, and divorce follow, interspersed with artistic collaborations with Bill Drummond and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others. Following an onstage reunion with Cope at the Royal Festival Hall, Simpson discovers that seven thousand miles away, in the Philippines, he is considered a musical god. Presidential suites, armed-guards, police escorts you couldn't make it up, and, incredibly, he does' t need to. Revolutionary Spirit is the story of a musician driven by an unerring belief that artistic integrity will bring its own rewards. It concludes with an exorcism of sorts as Simpson finally rids himself of the debilitating demon of psychological depression that has, from the age of nine, run like malware in the background of his life.

Pop: The History Makers with Steve Blame

Francesco Mellina is a renowned photographer, best known for capturing the vibrant music and cultural scene in Liverpool during the late 1970s and early 1980s. To watch this www.popthehistorymakers.comIn this podcast we concentrate on his work in the book - Total Stranger, Unseen photographs of Pete Burns and Dead or Alive between 1978 and 1983. Mellina was not only Burns' photographer, he was also the band's early manager. Known for his androgynous appearance and bold fashion choices, Pete Burns, became a prominent figure in the music scene with their worldwide hit ‘You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)' blending elements of new wave, dance-pop, and goth culture.Originally from southern Italy, Mellina moved to the UK and quickly immersed himself in the burgeoning punk and post-punk music movements. His work, particularly from this era, provides an intimate and authentic portrayal of iconic musicians, including The Clash, The Ramones, and Siouxsie and the Banshees, as well as everyday youth culture. Mellina's photography stands out for its raw, candid style, often blurring the lines between subject and spectator, offering a unique glimpse into the underground scene that shaped a generation. His images have since become important historical records of a transformative period in British music and culture. The book si available from Francesco Mellina's website.www.redbookart.comThe exhibition Total Stranger is on between 21 September 2024 – 19 January 2025, Wednesday–Sunday, 10am–4pm at Bridge Cottage, in Port Sunlight, Wirral. Part 3 of the discussion finds them finishing up the tracks on Side One and flipping the record over to start Side Two.  As usual, our hosts end up covering a wide variety of topics during their discussion. While talking about the first song, the author Raymond Chandler comes up, as does film noir.  When Brian and Sarah move on to the instrumental song that closes out Side One, the composer/conductor Gustav Mahler is brought into the discussion.  For the first song on Side Two, Brian and Sarah both find it relevant to mention Pete Burns of the group Dead or Alive. Phil Collins wrapped up his commitments as front man and percussionist for Genesis and collaborative work with Eric Clapton in 1984, then commenced work on his third album, No Jacket Required.  It was released in February 1985, and had hits on the charts in July.  The name of the album was inspired by an incident where he was not allowed into The Pump Room restaurant in Chicago because he did not have the proper dress code jacket.  His friend, vocalist Robert Plant, did have the correct attire and was let in.  After he relayed the story in appearances with late night hosts David Letterman and Johnny Carson, restaurant management sent Phil a complementary sport jacket and apology letter, inviting him to come back wearing “whatever he wanted.”Unlike previous albums Collins decided to make this third solo album more upbeat with several dance-oriented singles.  Collins was also able to recruit a number of musicians to the effort, including former Genesis bandmate Peter Gabriel and Police front man Sting. The result was a huge commercial success, reaching number 1 on the US albums chart for seven consecutive weeks and on the UK albums chart for five.  The four singles released all went into the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 charts, with two topping the charts.  It was a critical success as well, bringing home three Grammy awards including “Album of the Year.”  Collins would move from a successful musician to a celebrity on the strength of this album, which would be his highest selling solo effort.Rob brings us this album for our podcastOnly You Know and I KnowRob starts us with a deeper cut co-written by Phil Collins and Darryl Stuermer.  Stuermer played bass for Genesis tours, and lead guitar for Collins' solo tours.  The lyrics contain a number of contradictions.  “When I ask you, what you see in me you say, 'Our love is blind.'”Don't Lose My NumberWhile this song was not released as a single in the UK, it went to number 4 on the US charts.  The lyrics were created in a stream-of-consciousness improvisation session, and Collins himself doesn't really know what they mean.  The video is a comedic look at the decision process on theming the video, with Collins in multiple parodies of other videos popular at the time.Inside OutThis track has a feel similar to some of the slower Genesis pieces.  The lyrics  describe a person who faces a crowd of people telling him what to say and what to do without regard to what is authentically himself.  Collins uses a combination of drum machine and drum kit on this song.We Said Hello GoodbyeThis song was not originally on the album, but was a B-side to the single release of "Take Me Home" and "Don't Lose My Number" as well as a bonus track on the CD.  The lyrics discuss leaving an old home and moving to a new one, but the emotions may reflect things left behind in life more broadly. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main Theme from the motion picture “Back to the Future”Marty McFly made his journey back from 1985 to interact with his 1955 parents in a tricked out DeLorean  for this iconic picture released in 1985. STAFF PICKS:You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) by Dead or Alive  We're a bit concerned about Wayne as he abandons his punk and hard rock sensibilities to bring us this danceable hit.  Dead or Alive were a foursome from Liverpool, England.  Lead singer Pete Burns would later be on the TV reality show “Celebrity Big Brother.”The Confessor by Joe WalshBruce brings us the title song from Walsh's seventh studio album.  It is heavier and darker than many of Walsh's singles.  “If you look at your reflection at the bottom of the well, what you see is only on the surface.  When you try to see the meaning hidden underneath the measure of the depth can be deceiving.  The bottom has a rocky reputation.”  Raspberry Beret by Prince and the Revolution Lynch features a song about young romance and a summer fling.  Although this song was released after Prince's success with “Purple Rain,” Prince still played most of the instruments, making the song primarily a solo effort.  It is off off the album “Around the World In a Day,” and reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.And She Was by Talking Heads Rob finishes the staff picks with a song penned by David Byrne from the Talking Heads, off the album “Little Creatures.”  It is an unusual song about a girl levitating over everything, and the guy who loves her and wishes she would come down to the ground.  It reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Fundance by Stanley Jordan Finger tapping jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan would set a record when his album “Magic Touch” spent 51 weeks at the top of the Billboard jazz charts.

In this episode, Sasha and Stella welcome Calvin Lunt, whose life journey encompasses a remarkable exploration of identity, the challenges of addiction and recovery, and a commitment to personal growth and spiritual wellness.Growing up, Calvin was essentially a feminine gay boy, but never particularly gender dysphoric as a child. He became a dancer and later a drag queen. You'll hear him share about the impact of his experiences as a mixed-raced kid from a working class family with a very chaotic upbringing. From experiencing shame-inducing events to undergoing a pendulum swing between extreme identities, Calvin digs deep into his complex relationship with his sexuality and his body. He also discusses how his role as a social media influencer with a significant following and exposure to the camera spotlight also impacted his sense of self. Additionally, his involvement in the gay party scene led him down a path of heavy drinking and drug use, further impacting his search for identity. At the age of 25, Calvin took a surprising turn in his journey by embracing gender transition. Two years later, influenced by his pursuit of sobriety and a realization that certain aspects of his identity were founded on falsehoods, he chose to detransition. Presently, Calvin works as a wellness coach, drawing from his encounters with spiritual practitioners across different parts of the world and his personal journey of recovery and healing. His training encompasses a diverse range of experiences and perspectives. And his story illuminates the profound journey of self-discovery, transformation, and healing.Links:Find Calvin on Instagram @calvinluntBecoming A Woman to Become A Man (Calvin's Podcast)https://open.spotify.com/show/5SYWRgcEvFnO0IHw5PBLFW?si=ed7578460935453d Beauty School Cop Outs (MTV Show)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3364728/ Pete Burns' Life in Pictureshttps://www.adelaidenow.com.au/entertainment/celebrity/pete-burns-life-in-pictures/image-gallery/36584e9eb07297799204e00637e87a11If you liked this episode, more episodes you might find interesting:Episode 3 - Feminine Boy to Gay Man: A conversation with Arty Mortyhttps://gender-a-wider-lens.captivate.fm/episode/feminine-boy-to-gay-man-a-conversation-with-arty-morty Episode 8 - TransGenerational Wisdom: a Conversation with Buck Angelhttps://gender-a-wider-lens.captivate.fm/episode/8-transgenerational-wisdom-a-conversation-with-buck-angel Episode 12 - Identity vs. Role Confusion in Adolescencehttps://gender-a-wider-lens.captivate.fm/episode/12-identity-vs-role-confusion-in-adolescence Episode 73 - Shame Narcissism and the Transition Fantasy w Joe Burgo

It was the end of an era as the final Dead Or Alive single produced by Stock Aitken Waterman was released. And although "I'll Save You All My Kisses" wasn't the biggest of hits, that song and the story of what came next for SAW's first number one act is given the in-depth treatment in this episode. In an archival interview with DJ Sveta, the late Pete Burns talks about the conclusion of his time at PWL — and his return there in 1993. Producer Barry Stone (of Jewels & Stone and The Alias) shares his memories of working with Dead Or Alive on their remake of "Rebel Rebel" and the Nukleopatra album. Also this episode, Bananarama's next big hit came in the form of the Europop-influenced "Love In The First Degree", while there are a couple of lesser known tracks to cover: the 1987 PWL remix of "A Walk In The Park" by Nick Straker, which Pete Hammond tells us about, and Edwin Starr's "Whatever Makes Our Love Grow".

What did he really think about working with all those bands? And what happened to producer Pete Ware, who worked with SAW on some of those early tracks? Aber das ist tatsächlich sehr, sehr spannend. Am Ende sprechen wir darüber, was Kunst heute noch darf, was eine Kunstfigur sagen darf, wie politisch unkorrekt Comedy noch sein kann. Eine schwierige, aber sauspannende Unterhaltung.

We started Aural Fixation's Cycle 4 by paying homage to Mother Robyn, with no idea of the extent we would truly be dancing on our own over the next few months. We found solace with queer giants like Queen, Janelle Monáe and Cher, and explored iconic queer tracks in a streak of mini episodes. We also recorded mostly 600km apart, with technical difficulties, corrupt memory cards and deleted vocal tracks just adding to the general 2020-ness of it all. But dolls – we soldiered. It’s with relief and well, a surprise, that we reach the finish line, and there’s no one we would rather share our traditional Q&A episode with than @mynameisnotsusanthony aka Anthony from Brisbane aka deep friend and stan of the podtina. This time, Anthony helps us answer questions from other listeners, as we tumble down a rabbit hole populated with Celine Dion’s back, non-binary disco diva Sylvester and Dannii Minogue’s, well, stanniis. Join Drew, Andy and Anthony for an hour of queer pop gold, as we traverse the transgressive homoerotica of Pete Burns, the sexy stripped carcass of Robbie Williams and, of course, again, Madonna’s career. Oh, and stick around for the bonus segment at the end – something about having brunch with RuPaul? Don’t forget to rate, review and subscribe to Aural Fixation wherever you find your podcasts. This episode contains the odd swear word! Nothing harsh or offensive.I got Francesco Mellina in my Barberchair and spoke about his incredibly adventurous life. He left Italy at 16, travelled, always dreamed of coming to Liverpool as a young boy, and decided to call it his home after only spending a short time here. He took his style inspiration from the 50's classic look, he managed 'Dead or Alive' the 1980's English Pop band, fronted by the mega eccentric Pete Burns. Listen to Francesco reveal his life story to me in this great episode of the podcast. I met Francesco properly about six months after seeing him around the city for years, I always knew that he must have had an interesting story to tell, I was right! Francesco was amongst many other things, a professional gig photographer mainly in Liverpool during the late 1970's. He released a book in 2014 called 'Revealed' he took this opportunity to share some of his amazing photography, not only of the massive bands that played in Liverpool but of the people that went to these gigs. His photography is candid, raw and makes you feel like you are at the gig. Francesco will be releasing a new book within the next few months and will be looking for pledgers on Kickstarter to get his second project off the ground. I will definitely be pledging for a copy of this new book. You can find Francesco on instagram @francescomellinaphotography and find his book at Waterstones.

Party Favorz is wrapping up our Back to the 80's edition with the final induction into the Diva Hall of Fame with the gender-bending and ultra-influential Dead or Alive. Dead or Alive was an English pop band formed in 1980 in Liverpool; finding success in the mid-1980s, releasing seven singles that made the Top 40 UK and three albums on the Top 30 UK. They were the first band under the production team of Stock Aitken Waterman to have a number-one single. At the peak of their success, their lineup consisted of Pete Burns (vocals), Mike Percy (bass), Steve Coy (drums) and Tim Lever (keyboards); they have released seven studio albums and five compilation albums. Two of the band's singles reached the U.S. Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 -- "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" (No. 11 in 1985) and "Brand New Lover" (No. 15 in 1986). "You Spin Me Round" peaked at number one for two weeks in 1985 in the UK, then charted again in 2003 and 2006 following Burns's appearance on the television reality show Celebrity Big Brother.[vague] It also became the first of two singles to top the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. In December 2016, Billboard magazine ranked them as the 96th most successful "dance artist" of all-time. As of 2017 Dead or Alive has sold over 30 million albums and 28 million singles worldwide.[5] The band was discontinued following Pete Burns' death in 2016. ³ As a GenX child of the 80's, I can honestly say that Dead or Alive was the shit! Beyond the two singles mentioned above, songs like "Lover Come Back To Me," "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me a Doctor)," "Something In My House," and "Come Home With Me Baby" were floor-filling staples at the time of their release. Fueled by the production team of Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW), Dead or Alive generated some of the most beloved Hi-NRG dance tracks of the era. Sadly, lead singer Pete Burns died of cardiac arrest in 2016 at the age of 57. As part of the era of big-hair and excess, the influence Dead or Alive had on dance music, as well as gender-fluidity, cannot be understated. It is with great love and admiration that Party Favorz inducts Dead or Alive into the Diva Hall of Fame as well as our Legacy artists edition. Notably, they were the first act to score a number-one single under the legendary production team of Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW). At the height of their fame, the band's lineup included Pete Burns on vocals, Mike Percy on bass, Steve Coy on drums, and Tim Lever on keyboards. Over their career, they released seven studio albums and five compilation albums. Two of their singles even cracked the U.S. Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100: "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" reached No. 11 in 1985, and "Brand New Lover" climbed to No. 15 in 1986. The iconic "You Spin Me Round" not only topped the UK charts for two weeks but also enjoyed renewed attention in 2003 and 2006 after Pete Burns appeared on the reality show Celebrity Big Brother. As a Gen-Xer who grew up in the '80s, I can confidently say that Dead or Alive was a cultural powerhouse. Besides their chart-topping singles, tracks like "Lover Come Back to Me," "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me a Doctor)," "Something in My House," and "Come Home With Me Baby" were staples that filled dance floors during their heyday. Under the guidance of Stock Aitken Waterman, Dead or Alive produced some of the most unforgettable Hi-NRG dance tracks of that era. Regrettably, the band's charismatic lead singer, Pete Burns, passed away from cardiac arrest in 2016 at the age of 57. Dead or Alive wasn't just about music; their impact extended to promoting gender fluidity during an era known for its excess and big hair. The band's influence on both dance music and social norms is immeasurable. With immense respect and admiration, Party Favorz proudly inducts Dead or Alive into our Diva Hall of Fame, as well as into our Legacy Dance Tribute series. Until the next time...ENJOY! The latest episode of the podcast which asks: have you got crabs? In this edition, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, we decided to give you the opportunity to watch our selected episode of Pops along with us (providing you keep a finger on the pause button, as we're over five times longer). It's just come out on BBC4, giving you an invaluable opportunity to tut to yourself and say; "God, they didn't even mention that Richard Skinner keeps saying "It's the way you tell them" to Simon Bates, the thick twats." Yes, we're smack in the middle of the Eighties, and a mere nine days away from Live Aid - and no-one realises yet what a massive fault-line it's going to create in Popland, when the dinosaurs come marching back and cram everything around them into their gaping maws. Least of all us, as we're too busy skulking around in a post sixth-form haze, sitting through a Saturday detention due to Tipp-Ex-related obscenities, and pitching a Pants Tent to George Michael in Barry Island Butlins.  Musicwise, however, this episode veers all over the shop, from Pete Burns taking the last stand for Pop Weirdness to Tears For Fears poncing about in Montreux to Paul Weller in his Pants to Oompah Reggae to Mick Hucknall annoying people trying to play pool to Roland Gift singing like he's got a hot bit of potato in his mouth to Ian Astbury dressing up like someone who reads palms in a caravan off Blackpool Pier. It's actually better than expected, although the No.1 is depressingly rammel. And as luck would have it, one of us - who was a Hip Young Cockleslinger at the Barry and District Times - has pulled out his scrapbook and treats us to his original reviews.  Neil Kulkarni and Simon Price join Al Needham for a solid pick at the scab of 1985, veering off on the usual tangents, which include having to go to school with the Topless Lovelies, the correct procedures of cock-drawing, trying to dress like Paul Weller and ending up looking like Eric Morecombe, Quincy Punks, and the Treacherous Steph of Basingstoke. Naturally, swearing is deployed. Often. This week I am talking to Stuart Saint. Star of stage across the globe and director of many shows at Leicester Square Theatre. Stuart's life spans from working with the Moscow State Circus to choreography for 80's high energy icon Hazell Dean. Moving form from musical theatre to the noughties Electro scene , working alongside the likes of Pete Burns of Dead or Alive, Stuart has many stories to make your eyelashes curl. His journey through severe health issues leading to the creation of his musical 'Princess' and his new one man venture 'Embrace the Hound' is a fascinating and extremely raw slice of a one man's struggle against his own demons. I decided not to cut this as I feel it would destroy the flow and it's a one piece special all by itself. Episode 8: Dead Or Alive - Mad, Bad, and Dangerous To Know (1987) - Part 1 This episode finds Brian and Sarah waxing nostalgic about a band whose lead singer recently passed away. The band is Dead or Alive, and the singer was, of course, the sensational Pete Burns. Up for discussion is the band's third album, "Mad, Bad, and Dangerous to Know," from 1987. Part 1: Background Brian goes into the history of the band and its many members during the early years, focusing on one in particular-- much to Sarah's annoyance. Sarah responds with some information on the production company responsible for this album's sound-- the trio known as Stock Aitken Waterman, who were behind Dead or Alive's biggest hit, "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" in 1985, as well as a slew of other 80s chart toppers. Part 2: Personal History Did Sarah actually own a store-bought copy of this cassette, or was this one of those "special" versions given to her by a friend? What obsolete practice did Brian engage in to get a copy of the first single? Part 3: Track by Track Each song on the album's first side is discussed, track by track. What is Brian's theory about the types of Dead or Alive songs? Which song's video shocked Sarah? Find out which songs they agree are hits and which, if any, are misses. This week Chris, M, and Skip (Josh is out again) talk about all the trailer-y goodness that came out Red Dead Redemption 2, Logan, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2. There's the dead guy with lunch meat on his ass and his dode in a can of tuna; the vagrant lady with the skull wand; and the ass-residing-in pearlfish. We also geek out about Star Wars theories. Oh, and RIP to Pete Burns who gets sent off in style by the death whistle. Thanks for listening! Enjoy.
