Ecclesiastes 12:8We seem to accept cynicism and doubt in all professions except preaching. There seems to be an unwritten law that says, “Thou shalt not doubt, struggle, or rebel.” But the truth is, pastors are human too. They need the same grace as everyone else who has questions.

IT WAS A little after 6 a.m. on June 14, 1907. Dawn was just brightening the decks of the passenger steamer Alliance, docked at the pier in Astoria, when John Bowlsby saw his prey step aboard. He fingered the big .44 in his pocket and tried to stay out of sight, waiting for a chance to make his move. His chance came almost immediately. The marked man was moving away from the crowd of people, and soon he stood in a spot where Bowlsby felt he could get in a good shot without risking hitting any bystanders. Carefully he steadied the big revolver against the side of a deckhouse — and pulled the trigger. Bowlsby's target, a fellow North Bend man named Cleve Jennings, died in a hospital eight hours later. Meanwhile, with his head held high, a triumphant John Bowlsby quietly submitted to arrest and handed over his revolver. Hard as it is for a modern person to believe, this cold-blooded assassination met with widespread approval. It was about as close to a pure example of “The Unwritten Law” in action as Oregon would ever see. “It was the outcome of one man alienating the affections of another man's wife and was the result of a manhunt in which the hunter finally found his game,” wrote the Morning Oregonian's Astoria correspondent the next day. Punk rock mainstays Unwritten Law should have been given Australian citizenship by now.Since first hitting our shores in 1996 the band have only toured the US more times, solidifying the love affair that has one so far as to Unwritten Law having one of their members live in this country full time.Best known and loved as part of the Warped Tour Festivals, Unwritten Law have struck the perfect blending of punk and hardcore, almost making the form of music an art form. And so it is Unwritten Law are returning to Australia once more, playing at Hotter Than Hell Festival dates as well as a select number of headlining gigs. Is Australia ready? We should be, but if there's one thing Unwritten Law have instilled in us over the years, it is to never expect anything from them. The band's resident Aussie, guitarist Scotty McLaughlin joined HEAVY to talk more."This is the shortest tour we've done in ten years," he laughed. "Usually we do a month here, but this is the quickest little thing we've done in a long time."We mention the Hotter Than Hell line up and the fact it almost has a Warped Tour kind of vibe about it."It does," he nodded. "I was looking up old tour posters from the 90s, and it's the same bands for the most part (laughs). It does have that old feel to it."In the full interview Scotty talks more about Hotter Than Hell, playing with other bands like Regurgitator, Less Than Jake, Jebediah, and The Bennies, playing their Black album in full and problems that come with doing something like that, their own headlining shows and how they will be different to the festival shows, what to expect from Unwritten Law live and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Roy Silverstein is the owner and chief engineer at Rarefied Recording in San Diego, CA. Originally from the Chicago area, Roy started his audio journey as a teenager, playing in basement bands and experimenting with 4 tracks. He quickly became obsessed with record making and the technical aspects of audio. This led him to the University of Miami where he studied Electrical Engineering with an audio emphasis; a special program that combined a full B.S.E.E. with a focus on audio applications. After college, Roy joined the Audio Systems team at Qualcomm, Inc. in San Diego and also started a home recording project studio called The Habitat.  While working on technical audio challenges for Qualcomm by day, Roy spent his nights and weekends refining his recording and mixing skills for both bands of his own and others. In time, the confines and limitations of the home studio became frustrating so Roy bought a property and began the process of building out a proper recording studio. With the help of studio designer Wes Lachot and in conjunction with master builder, Tony Brett, and wiring guru, Thom Canova, Rarefied Recording was born in June of 2013.  News of the studio spread very organically in the music community of San Diego and after a couple years, Roy went full time with Rarefied and hasn't looked back. In this one, Cody talks to Rick DeVoe. From 1994 to 2018, he promoted and managed bands like Pennywise, Unwritten Law, The Offspring and Blink 182. The bands weren't the ubiquitous names they are today, they were local bands. Punk rockers from California, still trying to make a name for themselves. Until Rick had an idea: What if he got their music into surf videos? They could play at video premieres, events and competitions. The first time this idea was put into effect was in 1994, with director Taylor Steele's “Good Times.” Taylor's videos featured guys like Kelly Slater, Shane Dorian and Rob Machado, and the sound of punk went right along with their styles of surfing. Eventually, with the help of guys like Rob Morrow — the founder of Morrow Snowboards — Rick found that that punk sound fit nicely into snowboard culture as well. He found that, at the time, there was a common language of anti-establishment and punk rock mentality that ran through surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding. In the early 90s, Rick brought punk bands to the King of the Hill competition in Thompson Pass twice. The first time, it was Pennywise and The Offspring. The second time, it was Pennywise again, but this time with Blink 182. He admits they were all out of their element in the mountains, but when they took the stage they were right back in their element, rocking a crowd. Before all of that, though, they were on a plane — Rick, the bands and their entourages. There were about 20 to 25 of them and they had flown from LAX to Anchorage, then they hopped on a smaller plane that took them to Valdez. This moment, in that small plane, is one that Rick will remember for the rest of his life. How some of the most influential punk rockers of this generation were buzzing along, headed to some of the most iconic mountains in the world. Thank you to Loft 100 Studios in Carlsbad, California for letting Rick use their studio to record.

Bankruptcy law and laws that govern corporate restructures play an important role in our economy. How a business moves forward after declaring bankruptcy is determined by these laws and the judges who uphold them – but how this all works can be somewhat of a mystery to many people. Doug Baird is the author of the new book ‘The Unwritten Law of Corporate Reorganizations,' which explains these laws and how they impact our modern economy. Doug and Greg discuss the history of bankruptcy laws (this was an important topic to the Founding Fathers!) and how the first large businesses in the U.S. used them. Baird is a professor of law at the University of Chicago and focuses a lot of his work on bankruptcy law. He's written one of the foremost textbooks on the subject, The Elements of Bankruptcy Law, which is one of the most heavily used texts on the subject. Episode Quotes:US has always been a debtor nation18:00: We've always been a debtor nation. And indeed, if you look at debates over the Bill of Rights, I think people who aren't lawyers or aren't familiar with this history would be surprised that a big issue about the Bill of Rights was basically protecting debtors. One fundamental principle of bankruptcy07:58: Bankruptcy takes non-bankruptcy rights as it finds them. And it doesn't create new substantive rights. If you're a debtor in bankruptcy, you have to obey the law just like anyone else. What bankruptcy judges shouldn't do08:45: Bankruptcy judges shouldn't invent new substantive rights. They shouldn't give you a right; you never had before. But that's different. These substantive rights are different than the rules that govern the bargaining, you know, these meta rules. What are the conditions and the norms of the bargaining environment? And, you know, it's not a question of the deal, but rather who gets a seat at the table and how we figure out the agenda and all these other things. The relative priority rule 47:41: Relative priority says, "Look, we have a company; we need a new capital structure." But it's not a day of reckoning. It's like an exchange offer. There's no reason to cash out interests, even if they'd be out the money in a day of reckoning because it's not a day of reckoning. Show Links:Recommended Resources:Jerome FrankWilliam O. Mickey Avalon's life story plays out like an episode of VH1′s ‘Behind The Music,” marred by personal tragedy, triumphs and immense pain. Avalon's back-story begins on the streets of Hollywood, California. Raised by his heroin-addicted father, he began selling pot at a young age, a trade he acquired from his mother. In an attempt to clean up his act, Mickey converted to Orthodox Judaism in his late teens, an effort that didn't last due to constant family tragedy, such as his father's death in a tragic drunk driving accident. By his early 20s, Mickey had married, had a daughter, and moved out of California, relocating to Portland, Oregon. The serine surroundings of the Pacific Northwest couldn't hide Mickey from his past for long, as his drug addled Hollywood lifestyle caught up with him in the form of an uncontrollable heroin addiction. As his life neared rock bottom, Mickey found himself broke, divorced, and turning to prostitution, just to support his smack habit. With a desire to once again get his life back on track, Avalon moved in with his sister, and the pair set out on the road to recovery. Tragedy struck again when his sister relapsed, and died from a heroin overdose. After the deaths of both his father and sister, Mickey decided that he wanted more out of life, moved back to Los Angeles, and chose to make one final attempt to clean up his act. Shortly after his return, Mickey was befriended by ex-MTV VJ Simon Rex (aka Dirt Nasty), who encouraged Avalon to pursue his passion of hip-hop and even collaborated with him on some tracks. At the time, Avalon was staying in a sober living facility and had a strict curfew, so Dirt Nasty began passing out Mickey's demo at Hollywood clubs, which helped Mickey develop a following among fans of the Los Angeles nightclub scene. As Mickey's popularity grew, he began to sell out clubs throughout California with his legendary live show. Soon after Interscope Records took notice of the guerilla promotions tactics and signed Avalon to the label in 2005. Through Interscope, Avalon released his now classic self-titled debut album, which showcased his unique rhyming style and indulgent lyrics. Inspired by his experiences on the streets with drugs and prostitution, the raw honesty of his songs immediately resonated with audiences. Fan favorites “Jane Fonda,” “Mr. Right” and “My Dick” quickly spread across the internet and mainstream radio, turning Mickey Avalon into a household name. Avalon quickly took to the road and was performing sold-out shows alongside the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Travis Barker and DJ AM, Snoop Dogg, Stephen Marley and Slightly Stoopid. Mickey's contagious demeanor and unique writing style has made him a hot commodity in the music industry as hip-hop artist Young Jeezy and producer Jermaine Dupri jumped at the chance to collaborate with him for a Boost Mobile commercial. Avalon then joined forces with rock acts the Happy Mondays, and Unwritten Law, with whom he co-wrote the radio hit “Shoulda Known Better”. His music has been featured in countless movies and television series including the HBO's series Hung, the animated series American Dad, the Duke Nukem Forever video game, Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay and most recently in the trailers for the Cameron Diaz film “Bad Teacher.” --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/dadcastco/support

They riff on low budget horror films, Ed Wood, Vampira, the unsettling ghost sightings Ace has had, and among other things, why The Damned's Dave Vanian is the sexiest man on earth.More from Pleasant Gehmanwww.pleasantgehman.comInstagram: @princessofhollywoodwww.facebook.com/pleasant.gehmanwww.twitter.com/PleasantGehman1This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts

Guitarist extraordinaire Ace Von Johnson has played with so many bands it's hard to keep count. Just some of them are glam-metal lords Faster Pussycat, the industrial Neon Coven and a plethora of punk combos including Unwritten Law, U.S. Bombs, Madcap, Cheap Sex and infamous New York  hardcore icons Murphy's Law. He's been with LA Guns since 2018, and they've just released a new album called “Checkered Past”  Aside from music, Ace is also a voice actor and canine advocate: he adores pit bulls.
