Question: which part of Alnwick Castle was once considered the finest of its kind in the world?Answer: it was the Victorian Kitchens, which were created in the 1850s to be an architectural, culinary and technological marvel! In this episode of the Alnwick Castle Podcast, we explore some of the history of the castle kitchens - from the original medieval kitchen area to the developments of the Victorian period. You will hear reports from newspapers of the time, find out about the underground tunnels that delivered food, and hear about a few of the people who worked in these spaces. The Kitchen spaces have changed over time. In the 20th century, a school, a training college and St Cloud State University have all used the Great Kitchen and the larder rooms nearby. Last year, a long-term project began to rediscover the history of this area within Alnwick Castle - look out for next month's episode to hear more about that! This episode was recorded in various castle locations, so you may hear the sound levels change slightly as it is playing.Bon appetit!

In this episode, we have on Tanner Pruett discusses his coaching journey and how it has evolved over time. Tanner played baseball at Modesto Junior College in CA and Crown College in MN. He began his coaching career at Starters Sports Training and went on to coach at St Cloud State University, Tread Athletics and is currently a pitching instructor at Mash Baseball and a volunteer pitching coach at North Central University. In this episode we discuss the importance of allowing athletes to explore and find their own movement solutions, rather than focusing on perfect mechanics. Tanner also discusses how his coaching approach aligns with ecological dynamics and the Constraint Led Approach. He highlights the value of incorporating real game-like situations, such as facing live batters, into training sessions. We discuss how coaches can use biomechanics to guide an athletes search process to find more functional movement solutions. The conversation also explores the balance between exploration and consistency in training, as well as the role of constraints in pitching practice. In this episode Greg has an exciting and informative conversation with Dr. Janet Tilstra, PhD CCC-SLP. During their conversation, they discuss Dr. Tilstra's article, From Speech Helper to Ally. This article recognizes the need for developing a greater understanding of the psychological effects and emotions associated with communication disorders in order to encourage professionals in the field to incorporate counselling strategies in their clinical interactions. This article identifies a stuttering paradigm shift from a clinical focus to ally: a clinician changes her own perceptions of speech fluency and encourages others to re-examine theirs. Dr. Tilstra is a speech-language pathologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at St Cloud State University, St Cloud, Minnesota (USA). She completed her undergraduate and Master's degree in speech-language pathology at the University of Iowa and PhD in educational psychology at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Tilstra teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on stuttering, language development/disorders and research methods. She is an active clinical supervisor and passionate ally dedicated to amplifying the voices of people living with communication differences and disorders. She enjoys mentoring students, consulting with non-profit agencies, and designing innovative training models. Enjoy their conversation.

Feven Gerezgiher reports: An alleged hate crime in the town called Cold Spring, located 20 miles outside of St Cloud, has returned attention to longstanding racial divides in central Minnesota. A multiracial family says it was racial bias that motivated the man who harassed them for months before he drove a car into their house in July.St Cloud State University's Christopher Lehman said the incident reminded him of an event in 1917, when a lynch mob drove a black man out of St. Cloud for being in an interracial relationship. “What happened in Cold Spring could certainly happen as a continuation of those feelings that have always been there among people and have just never been confronted or addressed by their families or by the city at large,” said Lehman. Central Minnesota's early ties to slavery are strong, but not common knowledge.Lehman authored the book “Slavery's Reach: Southern Slaveholders in the North Star State.” He says in the mid-1800s, central Minnesota was a destination for slaveholders looking to invest in real estate and escape summer heat. “The slaveholders who are investing in Minnesota have political control over St. Cloud and over central Minnesota in general,” Lehman said of the time. “So much so that central Minnesota becomes known as a political stronghold for the slaveholding class.”Lehman said that influence continued in the area as European immigrants adopted pro-South and pro-slavery politics long after southerners departed. This worked to discourage Black people from moving to St. Cloud for nearly half a century, until the 1960s when government institutions wanted to diversify the local workforce.According to Lehman, in recent years central Minnesota has begun to address its past, both by creating a park named after the state's first slaves and by hosting community conversations.

It’s probably the biggest wish that we all have for our fellow humans. Peace on Earth. As a matter of fact, if you asked a random sampling of people what they’d want if granted one wish, that’s an answer you’d get a lot. Why then, if so many people want world peace, is it so hard to obtain?   Religion, politics, certain philosophies and movements tend to want to take us back to “the good old days”. There is a tendency for people to romanticize how good it used to be. The motto "Make America Great Again", while sounding benign, can be taken this way. When exactly was it so great? I mean, I believe we ARE great and constantly getting BETTER, but by no means are we or were we perfect. Our history is riddled with strife as we took this journey. Based on the way minorities were treated, slavery, gender inequality, and other societal woes, we should be focused forward, not backward, right?  It is akin to wanting to revert back to Sharia Law in the middle east. Why work back and toward putting people down when we should lift them up?   Can we achieve peace on earth with religious and political extremism? Do I need to take off my rose coloredglasses and accept that people, despite everything, are NOT really good at heart?  Roya Akhavan is a PHD and a Professor at St Cloud State University and author of: Peace for Our Planet: a new approach.  To learn more about Rosa go to: https://bahaiteachings.org/author/roya-akhavan-2 To learn more about Desiree Duffy go to: http://blackchateauenterprises.com

Business classics are still around and popular, books by successful CEOs are always popular (for a while, at least), and books that try to show a new way to succeed in business and management skills will always be relevant to people working to build skills. Welcome back to Linking Our Libraries! This week we are going to talk about the leadership competency that sounds like Adulting: Accountability. Check out our full shownotes page here. Who is joining us this week? Rhonda Huisman, doctoral candidate and Dean of the University Library at St Cloud State University! We hear people talking about “adulting" online and in person. When you think about it, this means being accountable. And that’s kind of terrifying. Being accountable means taking responsibility for results - positive and negative. It’s great to take responsibility for the good things that happen in your library – everyone can join in celebrating together! It is much less fun to be accountable when your program is a disaster, people are complaining about your books, the computers explode, and the ceiling falls in with water damage. Leadership means standing up, being accountable, and then helping everyone else to get back on track. Things will not always go as planned. It’s okay. Leaders will accept responsibility, and start working on strategies to move forward. You can easily think of any number of leaders you have seen at work or in the news, who refuse to acknowledge they make mistakes or are involved in any workplace problems. These people are not real leaders; and everyone can see it. No one wants to work with someone who constantly tries to shift blame and hog credit.
