VGK lost in Colorado Monday night 3-2 in a physical preseason game. The Golden Knights started Logan Thompson for the first time in six months. L.T. gave up two goals on 12 shots. One was a turnaround wrister by Ryan Johansen on the power play. The other goal scored by Oskar Olausson off a Michael Amadio turnover. Thompson was replaced by Jiri Patera midway through the game. Patera gave up one goal off another turnover, this one by Nic Hague, who gave up the puck to Curtis McDermott of the Avalanche. We talk about highs and lows in last night's game for VGK. The VGK rookies went winless over the five-day rookie camp, losing to Anaheim, the Kings, and Colorado. The finale against the Avs was decided in OT and VGK's rookies fell 4-3. Brendan Brisson scored another goal, his second of the weekend, in the loss. Patrick Guay and Tomas Uronen also added goals in the loss. As VGK Rookies prepared for this weekend's games, Brendon Brisson drew attention Thursday by showing up wearing former Misfit Reilly Smith's number 19 on his jersey. Granted Brisson has worn that number throughout his young career and the University of Michigan, but is it too soon for any player to wear the VGK great's number? Brisson explained that he spoke to a current Golden Knights player before reaching out to Smith, who was traded to Pittsburgh after winning the Cup, and he received Smith's blessing to wear the No. 19 jersey. Former Golden Knights defenseman Nick Holden retired after 12 years in the NHL earlier this week. He was then named to the VGK Development Staff, where he will focus on working with AHL Silver Knights defensemen. The last blueliners that VGK developed to play full-time for the team were in 2018 - with former Chicago Wolves Shea Theodore, Nic Hague and Zach Whitecloud. Holden played three seasons for VGK. Chris Gawlik talked about the addition of Maxine Comtois, who signed a Professional Tryout Contract this week. He feels Comtois is a "diamond in the rough" and is a strong finisher in front of the net. Comtois is just 24 years old and last played for Anaheim. VGK was very efficient in 5v5 last season. The Golden Knights are hoping the trend carries over this season. Did we overreact about the lack of power play scoring by VGK last season? Perhaps. VGK scored on 20% of its power play opportunities during the regular season. That improved to 22% in the playoffs. VGK was actually on average with the rest of the NHL, 21.3%. The Bruce Cassidy system is working, but the Golden Knights struggled somewhat on the power play. Perhaps those struggles were overblown. We also discuss Gary Bettman and Conor McDavid's ideas of extending overtime periods. They each say OTs should be extended 5-10 minutes in length. This past season about 70% of the games that went past regulation were decided in overtime. They didn't extend to shootouts. And we talk about Chris and family's visit with the Stanley Cup. Frank Saravalli, NHL Insider from the Daily Faceoff, told the Oilers Now podcast that Nolan Patrick wasn't as injured as VGK led us to believe. Amid the departure of Reilly Smith and Jonathan Marchessault moving to the top line, this will be the first time in seven seasons that William Karlsson will not be opening a campaign with his Misfit friends by his side. That could prompt VGK and Bruce Cassidy to move Karlsson to a newly formed third line with Paul Cotter and Michael Amadio for starters or other players could move onto that line. 21 months later, we ask who is winning the Jack Eichel trade? Eichel was traded to VGK from Buffalo in exchange for Alex Tuch and Payton Krebs, plus each team received draft picks. VGK captain Mark Stone said he played most of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final vs Florida with a broken left wrsit. Stone told Pat McAfee that someone took a whack at his wrist in the first period of the game and he wound up with a fractured left wrist. Stone went on to tally a hat trick in what was the closeout game. He scored his final goal on an empty netter on his third attempt. McAfee also made good on his promise to donate $250,000 to Stone's charity of choice if VGK won the Cup. The money will go to the local organization Cure For The Kids. Our Chris Gawlik has done it again! He has VGK up in arms at the thought of Jonathan Marchessault being traded if the team cannot come to contract terms with the Conn Smythe winner sometime this season. Marchessault's contract expires at the end of the season and so far there have not been any discussions between his agent and the Golden Knights. We figure he would want a contract of about $7-million and term. Gawlik's story about the possibility of Marchessault being traded has been appearing everywhere virally. The quickest a Conn Smythe Award Winner has been traded was when Mike Vernon was traded by the Red Wings 72 days after winning the award and the Stanley Cup. Wayne Gretzky was traded from Edmonton to L.A. 75 days after winning the Conn Smythe, so anything is possible. Jack Eichel said on the Missin Curfew podcast last week that the Wives and Girlfriends (WAGS) of VGK players got a little ahead of themselves when they started to plan for a victory celebration before Game 5 of the Western Conference Final against Dallas. He said planning was already starting for the players and where they would celebrate. "They were saying "are we gonna do this or that after the game." It might have been a distraction as VGK lost to Dallas 4-2 and the series shifted back to Dallas. "That stuff kinda bothers me. Let's focus on winning" Eichel added. He said when the Golden Knights were ready to wrap up the Stanley Cup series against Florida in Game 5, he told the team: "I don't want to hear a word about what's gonna happen after this game until Game Five is over." He told the team to worry about taking care of business and then they could celebrate with a win. According to an interview on TVA, a French TV network, Jonathan Marchessault said there were often disagreements and a couple of shouting matches on the bench with head coach Bruce Cassidy. The Conn Smythe winner said "It hasn't always been sunshine and rainbows between us.' Marchessault added that they yelled at each other on the bench during games, during the playoffs. "But I think he wanted the best of me and we managed to be able to work together," according to the Original Misfit. We talked about a game in which we saw Cassidy bench Marchessault for a period or so against the Seattle Kraken. Marchessault also said there have yet to be discussions for a new contract with VGK - as his expires at the end of next season. We discuss the Locked On poll of top teams in the salary cap era that won Stanley Cups. It has caused a lot of social media conversations. Tony voted in the poll and ranked VGK 5th behind Colorado, the 2020 & '21 Tampa Bay teams and the 2018 Caps. Chris feels a fifth place ranking fits also, but he feels his Chicago Blackhawks from 2010, '13, and '15 deserve some respect. Most fans cited recency bias in the poll. Appearing on the Cam and Strick podcast this week, VGK head coach Bruce Cassidy said Jack Eichel winning the Stanley Cup should elevate his game and career. Cassidy said Eichel's two-way game improved a lot this past season. Eichel was told by Cassidy that he would play fewer minutes before the season, due to Cassidy's system and a system that rolls four lines. Eichel gave up a lot of his minutes and his offensive game to become a better defender. Cassidy added that Eichel needs to improve in some areas, including the faceoff circle where he won just 45% of his draws, if he wants to win the Selke Award. Eichel also might earn some minutes this season on the penalty kill. Cassidy also said he 'did cartwheels" when his former employer, Boston, was eliminated in the playoffs. Mark Stone told NHL.com late last week that he and his teammates are itching to get back in the gym and back on the ice as they look to repeat as Stanley Cup Champions. Stone said he's been enjoying the Cup celebration, but feels it is time to get back to work. He said a lot of guys who have won the Cup before say winning the coveted Trophy is addicting, so he feels it. Stone is looking to stay healthy for the first time in three seasons, as he has had back injuries and surgeries that have taken him out of action.
