Gleeman and The Geek - An Unauthorized Minnesota Twins Podcast
Aaron and John talk about the Twins being swept at home by the White Sox, Target Field attendance cratering, Pablo López returning to the rotation, Byron Buxton and Luke Keaschall shining no matter what, and the results of The Athletic's Twins fan survey.
Host Michael Rand starts with a bleak night during a bleak stretch for the Twins. They had a pitifully small crowd at Target Field. The woeful White Sox drubbed them 12-3. David Festa was shut down for the year. And 90 losses grows more likely every day. 10:00: Are the Vikings headed for a regression? 15:00: Randy Johnson on Gophers football. 29:00: A big-time recruit for Gophers women's basketball.
Send us a textThe Minnesota Twins hosted the San Diego Padres for a three-game set at Target Field in Minneapolis. The guys come away with a different perspective on Taj Bradley, and appreciate Rocco's shift in management style since the trade deadline. David is still furious due to games being broadcast by 3rd party providers, and Dan has a relaxing trip for work to a very hot San Antonio. Send us a textAt home against the homeless Athletics, the Minnesota Twins lose all three contests at Target Field to continue a stretch of bad baseball played by what is now a very young team. David sees some hope in the play of Brooks Lee but is disappointed at other young players' performances. Dan is pleased to see Joe Ryan and Bailey Ober giving the team their all. David muses about a favorite song and wishes that the Pohlads had a love for baseball in their heart. The guys discuss the various realignment proposals that have recently circulated, and they look around at a violent (baseball-related) act in the minor leagues. Welcome to Episode 101 of Tablesetters! Today, we're joined by Declan Goff, the executive producer for Purple Daily and #MNTwins at SKOR North. If you follow Minnesota sport,s you already know his voice and his work. Declan has been covering the Vikings and Twins for years, helping drive some of the most engaging sports talk in the Twin Cities. In this episode, we break down one of the most surprising stories of the summer. On August 13, the Pohlad family announced they would not be selling the Twins after all. Many outside Minnesota assumed a sale was inevitable, but instead, the Pohlads are staying in control while bringing in two minority investors. Declan shares his perspective on whether this move signals real change in payroll, player development, and the team's philosophy, or if it looks more like a financial maneuver that lets ownership keep things steady. That story also ties directly into the team's long-term security in Minnesota. Target Field's lease currently runs through 2039, with an option to extend to 2059 if lawmakers approve a continuation of the stadium sales tax. When the legislature declined to extend the tax this summer, it left the issue unresolved. With attendance slipping, the question of stability is pressing. We ask Declan whether relocation could ever become a legitimate concern for the Twins, or if that fear is being overstated. From there, we dig into the reset at the trade deadline, where Minnesota moved ten Major League players, including Carlos Correa and Jhoan Duran. Derek Falvey called it a reload rather than a teardown, but was this one of the most dramatic resets in recent franchise history? Declan offers his insight into how fans should view this moment. We also talk about clubhouse culture, leadership, and the future core. From Pablo López's call for consistency, to the arrivals of Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait, to the emergence of Luke Keaschall, we examine who can carry the next era of Twins baseball and whether this roster can build an identity that lasts. Financial realities loom large as well. Payroll projections suggest Minnesota could be working near the 100 million dollar mark by 2026, potentially the lowest in baseball. With division rivals trending upward, is contending in the Central still realistic, or does it point to more years of retooling? Other key questions include: which of the deadline acquisitions could impact the roster as soon as 2026, how secure Rocco Baldelli is in his role, whether fans should embrace the draft lottery, and what Byron Buxton's public support for ownership reveals about the disconnect between the clubhouse and the fan base. We close by asking Declan how his own history as a Twins fan shapes the way he sees this reset. After years of division titles, heartbreak, and now another rebuild, does hope remain for another renaissance, or has the weight of ownership decisions changed what it feels like to root for this team? Declan brings a unique blend of passion and sharp perspective that makes Minnesota sports relatable and real. On Purple Daily and #MNTwins at SKOR North, his timing, insight, and authenticity connect with fans in a way that feels true to the market. Follow him on Twitter/X @DexsTweets for smart, real-time reactions that cut to the heart of the story.
Send us a textThe Minnesota Twins drop 3 of 4 to the Detroit Tigers at Target Field. The boys try to stay positive knowing the rest of this season is a lost cause. David loves Rocco's new piggie-back pitcher management, and Dan wants to know how this team will rebuild the bullpen this offseason. David asks the question no one wants to answer: Will the Twins trade Joe Ryan, Bailey Ober, and Pablo Lopez this offseason? On Wednesday afternoon, the Metropolitan Council will review a plan by Metro Transit to end the Northstar Commuter Rail service and transition it to a bus line. The train currently runs between Target Field in Minneapolis through the northwest metro and all the way to Sherburne County, a 40-mile route. Ridership during the pandemic plunged and never fully recovered. If the Met Council adopts the proposal, the Northstar Commuter Rail could end in January. For more on what this would mean for public transit, Minnesota Now guest host Chris Farrell talks with Eric Lind, the director of the Accessibility Observatory at the Center for Transportation Studies at the University of Minnesota.

What a weekend it was to be at Target Field!Twins ace Joe Ryan got the 2-1 pitcher's duel win over National League All-Star starter and Cy Young candidate Paul Skenes in front of a sellout crowd, followed by a one-hour concert from still-jacked 50-year-old Nelly in front of a still-amped throng. While Happy Hour host John Gaskins attended that, his Nobody's Listening Anyway co-host Matt Zimmer had the fortune the next day of witnessing Byron Buxton hit a 427-foot home run to complete the cycle on Byron Buxton Bobblehead Day.These awesome experiences, plus Buxton's appearances in Monday's Home Run Derby and Tuesday's MLB All-Star game, lead off a midsummer's daydream full of baseball and football conversation from the Gateway Lounge in Sioux Falls. Is Buxton one of the very best players in all of baseball? Can we enjoy this joyride he is on or is it still bittersweet considering so much of his talent has been squandered via injuries?Meanwhile, the Sioux Falls Canaries have six players in their league's All-Star game next week, with two of them up-and-coming local talents from Augustana (Jordan Barth) and USF (Josh Rehwaldt), the latter who Zimmer things should have gotten a call to join an MLB operation by now. While baseball is in midseason form, Alabama coach and USF player/coaching alumnus Kalen DeBoer stopped in Sioux Falls last week for a few speaking engagements before heading to Atlanta for SEC Media Days this week. Zimmer walks through his takeaways, including the connective tissue of DeBoer's 67-3 tear while head coach at USF to year two leading Fresno State, Washington, and now the Crimson Tide.Meanwhile, you can watch and hear Happy Hour's one-on-one with DeBoer from last May here.

David wants to know what the floor and ceiling is for Brooks Lee, and if we'll see him demoted when Keaschall is ready to return to the majors.
