Minnesota is right in the thick of summer sports, with the Twins and the Lynx both wrapping up the first halves of their seasons. On his bobblehead night on Saturday, Twins star Byron Buxton completed the first cycle in Target Field history. In the WNBA, Hopkins native Paige Bueckers of the Dallas Wings faced off against Caitlin Clark and the Fever in Indiana on Sunday. Minnesota Now sports contributors Wally Langfellow and Eric Nelson joined Minnesota Now with the latest sport news.
You can see it and you can smell it. Wildfire smoke is in the air in Minnesota for a third day. An air quality alert is in place for the northern half of the state. We talk to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency about how long we could see smoky skies. The burglary trial for DFL state Sen. Nicole Mitchell begins today. We have the latest on the case. Plus, we talk to a Winona Health, a rural Minnesota health administrator, about how Medicaid cuts will impact their operations. We hear from a state lawmaker and law enforcement on a new initiative to make the area around the state capitol safe. And a Minnesota Twins player made Target Field history. Our sports contributors Wally and Eric tell us about it.
Send us a textThe Minnesota Twins take 2 of 3 against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Target Field. The boys talk through the series and as expected much of the talk focuses on Twins All-Stars Byron Buxton and Joe Ryan. The guys lament not being at Target field for Buxton's historic cycle, and they both criticize Willi Castro for making Friday's game closer than it ought to have been. David wants to know if Joe Ryan can say that he outpitched Paul Skenes, while Dan wonders what Twins fans need to see in the last three years of Correa's contract for it to feel worth it. Send us a textThe Minnesota Twins take 2 of 3 from the Chicago Cubs at Target Field. Dan joins David in person in his Minneapolis studio and the boys discuss their days at the ballpark for the Cubs series. Dan feels like it's time for Rocco to let SWR see a lineup a third time through, and David has decided the Twins should keep Harrison Bader for 2026. David thinks MLB players should wear cameras so fans could watch at-bats from their perspective, while Dan argues that's asking too much. Star Tribune columnist Patrick Reusse joins host Michael Rand for a look back at the weekend in sports, which included an entertaining three-game series at Target Field. The Twins won two of three from the Rays and Byron Buxton is an All-Star, though the news beyond that isn't too rosy for Minnesota. Plus the Lynx are 17-2 and could be on the verge of adding another very good player to their roster. And print deadlines aren't what they used to be, but the Wild are cooperating by not doing much of anything in free agency.
Send us a textThe Minnesota Twins take 2 of 3 from Tampa Bay Rays at Target Field in Minneapolis. Dan has an interesting dream about Joe Mauer, and David tries his best to interpret it. Byron Buxton is living his dream as he'll be playing in Atlanta as an All-Star. Dan appreciates Rocco's versatility in his use of pinch hitters and runners throughout the series, while David is furious Rocco didn't let Louis Varland pitch the 10th in game 3. Dan wants to know if this team is good again, while David wonders if it's time to bring up our resident Canadian, Eddie Julien. Thanks for listening, and as always, go Twins! After three years of violence during the Fourth of July in Minneapolis, law enforcement is putting in place additional safety measures during the holiday weekend. And it may rain on your Fourth of July parade. We get a detailed forecast from MPR meteorologist Sven Sundgaard. Plus, we check in with Iranian Minnesotans, who are concerned about the safety of loved ones back home. A legal battle is unfolding in federal court that could impact the future of electric vehicle infrastructure in our state. And we go “Out to Lunch” to a Twins game at Target Field with sports contributors Wally Langfellow and Eric Nelson!
Bump and Stacy are joined by The Seattle Times' Adam Jude from a soggy Target Field as they discuss the Mariners nice stretch of play on their current road trip. On The Timeline, what's the first you would do after getting selected in the NBA Draft? In Hype Train, is Cal Raleigh MLB's first half MVP?
Chad was at Target Field ready to enjoy a ballgame with listeners, but the weather changed that and he came back for an hour of a show. We discussed several issues brought by texters through Text-a-Topic and Chad addressed President Trump and others within his administration criticizing the media, particularly CNN, for doing their jobs and not simply parroting what we were told by Trump about the success of the Iran bombing.
Twins on-field reporter Audra Martin joins Korzo with talk about what she's seeing and hearing at Target Field as the Twins continue to struggle through a losing streak.
Jacob Misiorowski was asked on last week's podcast what he could do for an encore to his great debut, and he mused, "Six innings, no-hit?" Well, guess what? Misiorowski was even better the second time around, working six perfect innings in a productive week of road baseball for the Brewers, which also included some offensive fireworks. Host JR Radcliffe is joined by special guest Spencer Michaelis to discuss the majority of the week, which including a narrow win at Wrigley and a series win at Target Field. What does the new Garrett Mitchell injury mean for this team (and specifically hot-hitting Isaac Collins)? What's a good timeline for Brandon Woodruff? What are some of the craziest components of Misiorowski's six perfect innings to open in Minnesota? In Three Up Three Down (42:15), a fan climbs the net for a bat, a bad call turns favorable and a Miz stat that really pops. In Remembrew When (1:02:15), we don't go back very far to find the last time a player drove in eight runs in a game, like Christian Yelich did Friday. Finally, the take of the week (1:06:15) explores an error in Major League Baseball's statkeeping. Then, JR chats with relief pitcher Rob Zastryzny (1:16:15) on his unusual upbringing (born in Edmonton, Canada, and grew up in Texas), the lack of run support at Missouri, winning a ring with the Cubs in 2016, his circuitous journey back to Milwaukee and more. Send us a textAt home against the rival Brewers, the Minnesota Twins drop all three games over a weekend series at Target Field, continuing a tailspin that looks a whole lot like the one the team endured at the end of last season. David laments just how often we've watched Jonah Bride pitch, while Dan offers a theory as to why Jake Bauers pitched as poorly as he did for the Brewers in Game 1. Dan also has a two-faced reading of Brooks Lee's series, and David heaps the praise on the one Twins player who deserves it right now. They also ponder whether the team should just bring back Eddie Julien and Jose Miranda now, considering how bad the offense has been anyway. This week, i do an archaelogical dig into 160 years of baseball history in Minnesota. In many ways, Minnesota was an early leader in team sports being played before large crowds, when the Dakota and Ojibwe tribes would play native lacrosse games, as far back as the 1600's, long before European settlers arrived. As for baseball, their timeline stretches back to 1857, when citizens from the town of Nininger, establish the first baseball team in state history. Soon after the conclusion of the American Civil War, various teams begin to sprout up in the Land Of 10,000 Lakes, most notably in Minneapolis-St. Paul, as well as many outlier towns like Red Wing, Fairbault, Minnehaha, St. Croix and Hastings, riding the wave of the young sport's growth and popularity. 160 years later, the region's baseball history continues to be written by the Minnesota Twins, who bring the Major League brand to the state in 1961, after Calvin Griffith and the Washington Senators relocate to the Twin-Cities. I also present the history and construction of their current Home ballpark. Target Field, which stands as a testament to the Twins vision of providing a cathedral, that is not only on the cutting edge of baseball stadium aesthetics and functionality, but also for sustainable practices. Demonstrating a commitment to enviromental responsibility, and providing an inspiration to the Twins fans, to be champions for the very planet that sustains us all. #NinningerNine #NorthStarBaseBallClub #IgnatiusDonnelly #CaptainRolinOllin #VermillionClubOfHastings #MinneapolisNine #RedWingCrescentClub #SaxonNine #OlympicNine #BanJohnson #CharlesComiskey #LexingtonPark #AthleticPark #NicolletPark #MetropolitanStadium #HubertHumphreyMetroDome #TargetField #RodCarew #HarmonKillebrew #MudcatGrant #TonyOliva #LymonBostick #KentHrbek #KirbyPucket #JoeMauer #MikeKelly
