Imagine that it's afternoon, and you are pulled over by a police officer because a tail light is out, which you didn't realize. He is pleasant when he comes to the door and you think you're going to be given a warning. Then he stops and frowns. He asks you to get out of the car and has you perform a field sobriety test. You submit to a breathalyzer and find yourself in the back of the police car being arrested for a DWI because of an elevated blood alcohol concentration. The problem is, you haven't had any alcohol to drink today. Or yesterday for that matter. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.14.507986v1?rss=1 Authors: Makani, A., Akhavan, A., Shahbazi, F., Noruzi, M., Zare, M. Abstract: The effects of aging on the brain can be studied by examining the changes in complexity of brain signals and fluid cognitive abilities. This paper is a relatively large-scale study in which the complexity of the resting-state MEG (rsMEG) signal was investigated in 602 healthy participants (298 females and 304 males) aged 18 to 87. In order to quantify the brain signals' complexity, the multiscale entropy is applied. This study investigates the relationship between age and fluid intelligence with brain complexity and the variations of the complexity asymmetry between the left-right brain hemispheres across the life span. In the analysis of the brain signals, the gender difference was considered. The results showed that the complexity of rsMEG decreases across the lifespan. However, the complexity difference between the left-right brain hemispheres positively correlates with age. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that fluid intelligence and age have a positive correlation. Finally, the frequency analysis revealed a significant increase in the relative power of low and high gamma rhythms in females compared to males in all age groups. On this week's episode of Woman Inc., I sat down with Tala Akhavan, COO of Pietra, a platform that makes it possible to launch the brand you've always dreamt of. Tala, a former Uber executive, joined the creator economy platform with the mission to democratize access for female entrepreneurship via the platform's capabilities.     As a first time mother, Tala talked about the struggle of wanting to give her all to motherhood as well as her professional trajectory. While giving birth in the height of the pandemic, she made the uncharacteristic choice to not return to her secure job at Uber when her maternity leave ended. Leaving to become a full-time, stay-at-home mom, Tala experienced first hand that current workplace models and policies are not structured to support women who seek fulfillment in both areas.    There has been a spike in female entrepreneurship coming out of the pandemic, but at present, there is little transparency across markets to launch a product in a financially feasible and time efficient manner. Tala discusses her role as a COO who followers a value-first philosophy and how she thinks through major decisions.  After the recording stopped, Tala told me something that I believe is incredibly powerful. She told me that when she was offered the role at Pietra, she was actually offered the same role at a different company for double the salary. She turned it down because they weren't as accommodating to her musts of being able to be a present mom. I share this, with her blessing, because I believe that is the definition of being in your worth, and as Tala mentions, holding the line. Make sure to tune in to hear the full story and subscribe to Woman Inc. so that you never miss an episode. Now, let's get over to my conversation with Tala. By:  Jenna Todey, Host of Woman Inc.

Don't blow it by making their experience worse.“If the expected behavior is convenience, then not only it's not freaky, it's what they're hoping and expecting you to do and they reward you with that with more activity and more loyalty over time.” - JoshCDP can power personalization and segmentation efforts. CDP's are important in helping manage privacy issues, etc.“When customers opt into giving you data, if they never see the net benefit of that and it only benefits your business, then the customers aren't going to keep giving you data.” - BrianThe writing has been on the wall, regulatory changes are coming in customer privacy. “Rethinking Materialism from a Feminine Leadership Perspective", by Dr Roya Akhavan

As the world goes through an unprecedented new phase of economic upheaval, a deeper analysis of materialism as the root cause of the extremes of wealth and poverty has taken on new urgency. Such an analysis involves two fundamental questions. What is the difference between "materialism," which is hazardous, and "material prosperity," which is a worthy individual and social goal? What is the most effective mode of leadership for moving society beyond materialism and facilitating the achievement of true material prosperity? It may be argued that the best mode of leadership in pursuit of shared material prosperity would be one that reflects compassion, caring, nurturing, communal behaviour, and effective communication, all of which have traditionally been associated with the feminine aspects of human society. Participants are invited to reimagine new leadership models in the context of a nascent awareness of the need to balance the feminine and the masculine in all areas of human endeavour, including the creation of a more equitable economic system. Roya Akhavan is a member of the Baha'i Faith. She currently serves as Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at the Department of Mass Communications, St. Cloud State University. Dr. Akhavan is a frequent speaker on global issues at national and international forums and on radio and television programmes. She has lived and worked in four different cultures: Persian, American, Japanese, and Chinese. Her most recent publication is a book entitled, Peace for Our Planet: A New Approach. Abstract: Neurocognitive impairment is present in cirrhosis and may be more severe in cirrhosis with the overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE). Liver transplantation (LT) may reverse the impaired brain function. MRI of resting-state functional connectivity can help unravel the underlying mechanisms that lead to these cognitive deficits and recovery. Sixty-four cirrhotic patients (28 with OHE; 36 without) and 32 healthy controls were recruited for resting-state fMRI. The patients were scanned before and after LT. We evaluated pre- and postsurgical neurocognitive performance in cirrhotic patients using psychomotor tests, i.e. number connection test (NCT) and digit symbol test (DST). Network-based statistics found significant disrupted connectivity in both groups of cirrhosis with OHE and without compared to controls. However, the presurgical connectivity disruption in patients with OHE was included in a greater number of connections than those without (65 vs. 17). The decrease in FC for both OHE and non-OHE patient groups was reversed to the level of controls after LT. An additional hyperconnected network (i.e., higher than controls) was observed in OHE patients after LT (p=0.009). Regarding the neural-behavior relationship, the functional network that predicted cognitive performance in healthy individuals, showed no correlation in presurgical cirrhotic patients. Such an impaired neural-behavior relationship was re-established after LT for non-OHE patients but not for OHE. OHE patients displayed abnormal hyperconnectivity and persistently impaired neural-behavior relationship after LT. Our results suggest that patients with OHE may undergo a different trajectory of postsurgical neurofunctional recovery in comparison to those without, which needs further clarification in the future study. It’s probably the biggest wish that we all have for our fellow humans. Peace on Earth. As a matter of fact, if you asked a random sampling of people what they’d want if granted one wish, that’s an answer you’d get a lot. Why then, if so many people want world peace, is it so hard to obtain?   Religion, politics, certain philosophies and movements tend to want to take us back to “the good old days”. There is a tendency for people to romanticize how good it used to be. The motto "Make America Great Again", while sounding benign, can be taken this way. When exactly was it so great? I mean, I believe we ARE great and constantly getting BETTER, but by no means are we or were we perfect. Our history is riddled with strife as we took this journey. Based on the way minorities were treated, slavery, gender inequality, and other societal woes, we should be focused forward, not backward, right?  It is akin to wanting to revert back to Sharia Law in the middle east. Why work back and toward putting people down when we should lift them up?   Can we achieve peace on earth with religious and political extremism? Do I need to take off my rose coloredglasses and accept that people, despite everything, are NOT really good at heart?  Roya Akhavan is a PHD and a Professor at St Cloud State University and author of: Peace for Our Planet: a new approach.  To learn more about Rosa go to: https://bahaiteachings.org/author/roya-akhavan-2 To learn more about Desiree Duffy go to: http://blackchateauenterprises.com

Timing is how the ever so humble Lisa Kron explains how she revolutionized theater, first with Well, and then with Fun Home. Both of these plays went to Broadway and re-invented how we think about what qualifies as a “Broadway show.” Since Donald Trump was elected, Kron has become involved in activism. She discovered that protests require better chants, and what the right sound can offer. Then, Catie Lazarus speaks with Director Desiree Akhavan about shooting sex scenes in The Miseducation of Cameron Post, which debuted at Sundance last year and won the Grand Jury Prize. Akhavan’s latest television series The Bisexual is available on Hulu, and she is currently working on her first book. This episode of Employee of Month with Catie Lazarus was recorded live at Sundance Film Festival. Thanks to Russ & Daughters for sponsoring this episode.   Learn more about your ad choices. This week on TIFF Long Take, Geoff sits down with independent filmmaker Desiree Akhavan. Following her acclaimed 2014 debut, Appropriate Behavior, Akhavan’s latest is an adaptation of Emily. M Danforth’s novel The Miseducation of Cameron Post. The film, which stars Chloë Grace Moretz and Sasha Lane, won the Grand Jury Prize for US Drama at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Akhavan is also an actress, appearing in projects like Girl’s and Creep 2.   Akhavan talks about how she approached the adaptation process, why having a hit film at Sundance didn’t make the financing of her future projects any easier, and how she adapted her original vision of The Miseducation of Cameron Post script to make it work with a smaller budget.   She also talks about why Chloë Grace Moretz’s interest in joining the cast surprised her, why, despite glowing reviews and festival awards, it took so long to sell the film, and why she finds making TV more difficult than making movies.
