My guest today is the American videogame designer and writer, Teddy Dief. Born in Illinois, they graduated from Columbia University with a degree in music, computer science, and Japanese. Then while studying for an MFA in filmmaking and game design at USC's School of Cinematic Arts, they worked on Pirates of the Caribbean Online, and as a designer for the Kinect at Xbox. In 2013, my guest joined the founding team of indie studio Heart Machine as a designer for Hyper Light Drifter. Three years later they became the creative director of Square Enix Montreal. When that project was cancelled, my guest returned to the world of independent development, working as creative director of We Are OFK, an episodic game about a fictional band that was recently nominated for a Peabody Award. My guest is also the co-founder of Glitch City, a Los Angeles-based collective of game-makers and independent artists. Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. WE ARE OFK is an episodic visual novel by Team OFK that pulls together a lot of really interesting elements. It's not only got it's own virtual band with an EP of great electronic pop, but contains some of the most genuinely written conversations you'd expect to overhear from that cool group of twenty somethings in the bar. Director/Writer, actor and OFK Vocalist Teddy Dief (HYPER LIGHT DRIFTER) and Co-Writer Claire Jia (Nora from Queens, Fresh Off The Boat) share the creative story of making this game, why you might be able to catch OFK on stage very soon and why making complicated queer characters is important. If you're a regular listener, you may remember us expressing careful optimism at the news that Chloé Zhao was set to direct an entry to the MCU. Well, Eternals is finally here and you can consider our hopes dashed. Two special returning guests are joining Anita on this episode of the podcast: game designer, director, and musician, Teddy Dief; and CEO of Sweet Baby Inc, Kim Belair. This week the podcast is taking a step away from October's spookier fare so that we can discuss the latest Bond movie, No Time To Die, with returning special guest, game designer, director, and musician, Teddy Dief. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga and co-written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the 25th entry to the franchise is also the last that will star Daniel Craig as the titular, not-so-secret-identity, super spy. While it can be argued (and will be on this podcast) that Daniel Craig's turn as Bond has been a divergence for the franchise from the start, No Time To Die promises to be something radically different from a film series built around male power fantasies. Is it? Great Scott! We're firing up our flux capacitors and heading back in time to talk about 1985's Back to the Future. Recent listeners will remember our special guest from our last episode—game designer, director, musician, and friend of the podcast, Teddy Dief. Chosen by our Patrons from a group of time travel films, Back to the Future (produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Robert Zemeckis) is far more problematic than many of us remembered. Listen in to our discussion as we interrogate how a movie so culturally iconic and beloved presents so many issues. My guest on today's show is Teddy Dief. As well as having an incredibly enjoyable name to say out loud, Teddy is also a writer, game designer, Squarebowl founder and the creative director of Square Enix Montreal. We talk about high stakes Duck Hunt battles, being all in on Nintendo, getting an early introduction to game design via Nintendo Power VHS tapes, whether or not fitness is a game and, much to my personal delight, his time as a member of the acapella group The Clef Hangers. We also hit on the scratch and sniff cards of Earthbound, how he learned responsibility from the Sony Playstation, the impact of Final Fantasy 7, how Battlestar Galactica made him want to make games, the development of Hyper Light Drifter and why he cherishes the magic of Squarebowl. "There's a world where I can go and tell my secrets to." With the whole cast assembled, Goldie Bartlett introduces our first special guest, Teddy Dief, who helped develop Hyper Light Drifter, co-founded Glitch City, and hosts his own podcast on the Idle Thumbs Network, Playscape LA. Teddy joins the team at Nu Sentral to explore the cinematic worlds and role-playing systems of the escape rooms at Breakout Nu. Then Stephanie, Jey, Shang Lun, and Doug peel off to get sweet and salty about the blend of story and puzzle in "Materia Medica," a Chinese medicine-themed escape room. Clearly feeling the effects of four full days of escaping, this episode culminates in a feverish jam session where we brainstorm dozens of escape room ideas.
We have a very special episode for you this week, friends: The inaugural Game Hugs Live, recorded on-stage at PAX Australia 2017! Joining our host Jason Imms on the stage was Square Enix Montreal creative director Teddy Dief(pronounced “deef,” despite Jason’s horrendous mispronunciations), discussing life as an indie, Glitch City LA, the anxieties of success, and moving away from a lifelong goal of working at Naughty Dog to take a risk on the Kickstarter-funded Hyper Light Drifter.

In final episode of the series, Teddy talks with comic artist and programmer Tyler J Hutchison, about art and code mindsets, choosing constraints, getting off the computer, and more. Teddy talks about burnout and protecting your time, and says a reluctant goodbye from his new home in Montreal.
Composer Austin Wintory explains his outlook on success, craft, and endlessly challenging oneself to innovate, and responds to what it’s like to win a BAFTA Award for his work on Journey. Teddy takes a vacation and wonders what it takes to be able to “turn it off, and back on”.
We're back again with another episode of the Feedback Force podcast! This time with an ultra super secret guest (Okay, it's Teddy Dief, we're bad at keeping secrets here) Make sure you head over to the forums for podcast discussion! http://pbpnetwork.forumatic.com/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=371
Mysterious co-creator of Frog Fractions, Rachel Sala apparates into the studio to talk to Teddy about keeping secrets, creating weird things, and what it’s really like to be a woman in the games industry. Teddy is leaving LA, and talks about what matters - what remains after the hype subsides from a big event.
Game designer and writer Patrick Miller drops wisdom on Teddy about fighting games, eSports, and weird career paths. Teddy tries to rest, now that Hyper Light Drifter support is slowing down, but what does rest mean??
Teddy speaks with the person he has spoken most to over the last couple years. Alx Preston, the creator of Hyper Light Drifter, sits down with his old pal to talk about fine art, running a company, and being forever unsatisfied. Teddy opens up about his career-long impatience and unrealistic goals, and how he likes it that way.
Teddy gets serious with Brendon Chung (aka Blendo Games) about working solo, how he keeps a routine, and pushing to push out of his comfort zone. After a weekend of crunch work, Teddy attempts to summarize all of Los Angeles in five minutes.
We welcome current writer, developer, and previous co-designer and co-developer of Hyper Light Drifter Teddy Dief to the show to talk about his thoughts on the aesthetics, narrative, and, yes, politics of this masterful indie gem.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/no-cartridge-audio/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
