Great Scott, Slackers!Travel back to 1985, the absolute sweet spot of Gen X goodness. Holy cow, 1985 was pretty freaking good when it comes to TV, movies, and music!Television: Who ruled Thursday nights? Which new shows instantly became appointment viewing, and which now-iconic series launched that year?Box Office: The highest-grossing films of 1985 delivered time-traveling DeLoreans, Saturday detention, and one very Italian stallion with not one, but two huge hits. Billboard Hot 100: From synth-pop anthems to power ballads and surprising one-hit wonders, these are songs that I can clearly remember blasting from my transistor radio while mowing the lawn.Looking back it was a pretty glorious year. Anyone else have their first "official" date in 1985? I know I did!

Strap in and charge up the Mr Fusion, because this week on Born To Watch, the boys head back, forward and sideways through time with our full Back to the Future Part 2 (1989) Review. Whitey, G Man and Will settle into the DeLorean for one of the most ambitious sequels of the 1980s, breaking down timelines, hoverboards, self-lacing Nikes and all the glorious 80s optimism jammed into Robert Zemeckis' wild ride. The episode kicks off with the crew riffing on 1989 as a powerhouse movie year, then quickly dives into how Back to the Future Part 2 faced enormous expectations. With a to be continued tease at the end of the original, fans were primed, and the pressure was real. As the boys say, sequels rarely outshine their predecessors, but every now and then you get an Empire Strikes Back or a T2. So where does this one land?Whitey shares how the film was a childhood favourite, the one he rewatched the most, and how time has shifted his appreciation back to the original. Gow reveals he saw it at the cinema on release and has clocked well over 15 viewings since, instantly transported by Alan Silvestri's iconic score. Will talks about how the franchise has simply always been there, one of those movies that defined growing up.From there, the episode fires through the good, the bad and the very strange. There's deep love for the hoverboard, the power-lace Nikes, and that brilliant rooftop confrontation where Marty lures Biff over the edge before swooping up in the DeLorean. The crew gives full credit to the groundbreaking split-screen effects, the energy of Michael J. Fox juggling multiple characters, and the perfect dual performance from Fox and Christopher Lloyd, who are operating at peak one-two punch level. They also dig into the weird bits the film never fully explains. Could Old Biff actually operate the DeLorean? Why does he get sick travelling through time when no one else ever has? Why do Jennifer and Jennifer faint from seeing each other, but Biff does not? How does Marty not realise Hill Valley 1985 has turned into a dystopian biker slum the moment he steps out of the car? From Jaws 19 to the brilliant Jaws VHS window cameo, from Indiana Jones nods to manure trucks, the boys unpack every Easter egg this film throws at you. And of course, there's a big chat about whether Biff Tannen's alternate 1985 persona is really just 80s Donald Trump in a green tracksuit. (Spoiler, yes.)The episode also dives into box office numbers, casting trivia, Elizabeth Shue stepping in as Jennifer, and some cracking tangents, including Huey Lewis, yacht rock, Stranger Things, The Little Mermaid, and even John Farnham fronting LRB.By the time the boys reach question time, they've covered everything from the butterfly effect through to whether a single rich bloke can really break the fabric of time. It's pure Born To Watch chaos, big laughs and deep nostalgia for one of the great sequels of our generation. If you love time travel, manure trucks and three blokes talking absolute cinematic nonsense, make sure you follow Born To Watch on Spotify and Apple. Drop us a five-star review, send us a voicemail at borntowatch.com.au and buckle up for the next kickass credit song from the House Band. Great Scott! Online documents indicate that Marie Feagins, the former superintendent of Memphis Shelby County Schools, is preparing to run for mayor of Shelby County. Sounds familiar because over a month ago, Jake's trusted sources revealed that very same thing to him on our airwaves. Also on the show: Jasmine Crockett was called out for calling out Republicans who took donations from Jeffrey Epstein, but she got the wrong Jeffrey Epstein. We also give you the latest Memphis Safe Task Force data, and our listeners weigh in on if they would vote for Dr. Feagins. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Great Scott! It's the end of the road Marty! Or I thought we didn't need roads... wait a minute, we're on a train track! Heading straight towards the end of season 3, with our franchise of the year. Doc and Marty are very much back, but this time in cowboy hats and Nee-Kays. Cap'n Pop and The Corndog watch the finale to the Back to the Future franchise and they discuss if it sticks the landing or if it's a fiery train crashing into the Eastwood Ravine.P.S. - This movie's Easter Eggs went crazy, and as a tip of the hat, we have an Easter Egg ourselves for this one because lightning strikes precisely 40 years later on the Just play It Podcast. Great Scott! Back to the Future is the heartwarming tale of a teenage slacker, a wild-haired scientist, and a DeLorean with more horsepower than common sense. When Marty McFly accidentally zaps himself from 1985 to 1955, he must dodge his horny teenage mom, fix his parents' love life, and somehow get back to the future—all while Doc Brown turns Hill Valley High into a test site for time-traveling pyrotechnics. It's got skateboards, flux capacitors, Libyan terrorists, and more "Whoa, wait a minute, Doc" moments than Einstein can handle This week on Totally 80's and 90's Recall, Dave, Rob, and Kurt fire up the podcast and hit 88 miles per hour to break down the cinematic magic of Back to the Future. From Biff's punchable face to Chuck Berry's accidental inspiration, we're talking all the iconic lines, legendary scenes, and scientific inaccuracies that made this time-traveling adventure a pop culture lightning bolt. Today, I am joined by old friend and fellow MassArt alum Ben Sisto to discuss his acclaimed documentary, Who Let The Dogs Out (2019), ahead of his upcoming screening with a Q&A at Alamo Drafthouse in Boston. We talk about SIM (Studio for Interrelated Media at MassArt), a surprise guest at Fort Thunder, Providence and delaying projects during the pandemic! Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Baha Men classic with Ben for a Q & A at the Alamo Drafthouse in the Seaport on Tuesday, July 22nd. Who Let the Dogs Out (Hodgee Films, 2019) Only Boston Screening! Tuesday July 22 Alamo Drafthouse Cinema 60 Seaport Blvd., Boston MA, 02210 In celebration of the 25th anniversary of Baha Men's global pop sensation, Who Let the Dogs Out, OPEN is presenting screenings of Who Let the Dogs Out, a documentary film following artist Ben Sisto from Seattle to the UK as he attempts to gently nudge-back against the concept of individual authorship in favor of a view that art is a collective process. Produced by Hodgee Films, Who Let the Dogs Out made its debut at SXSW (2019), was a hit at Hot Docs (Toronto), and was later adapted into an episode of the popular podcast 99% Invisible. In addition to the Boston screening, the film will play at the Providence Public Library alongside Sisto's collection of some 300 pieces of research materials and ephemera. The Boston screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Who Let the Dogs Out writer Ben Sisto and critic Oscar Goff of The Boston Hassle. Some kind words: "…niftily balances a tightrope equation of “how much is this a white paper and how much is this an entertaining movie,” — Observer You'll never hear that damn song the same way again, that's for certain." – POV Magazine It's all just very confusing." –A/V Club About Ben: Ben Sisto is an artist who lives in Providence, RI with his family, including a dog called Andie. He is the world's leading expert (unchallenged) on Who Let the Dogs Out. Back in the 2000s, Ben lived in Boston where he organized many concerts, parties, and flea markets at places like Mass Art, Great Scott, and The Milky Way. I Think This Is Great! with Clay N. We've released well over 300 episodes over the last 6+ years and this is the very first time that we've tried to do an episode on a film that we've already recorded an episode on. Thankfully we had Nate Stone on back in July of 2020 and minutes before we were about to record the other day, Nate informed us that we had already recorded an episode on Back to the Future for it's 35th anniversary 5 years ago. So...we decided to record how we were feeling about the mishap and then re-releasing what we said about the film 5 years ago. We will be covering Back to the Future Part II next week and Back to the Future Part III the week after that, and it looks like we haven't recorded those yet! Enjoy the re-released episode...

Anniversary to the Future! Marty and Doc celebrate important dates for two of their movies. Join Enjoy Stuff as we compare two different eras of the legendary trilogy. Back to the Future parts I and III are having birthdays this year. So we look at the parallels of two of our favorite films. News Kermit the Frog gives an inspirational commencement speech at the University of Maryland Indy is returning to theaters, and this time he's bringing his Dad for Father's day The CIA once used a Star Wars fansite to spy. That alone sounds interesting enough to check it out on YouTube. Shua powered through all the Mission: Impossible movies to prepare for the “Final Reckoning” in theaters. It was a fun, spy, Tom-Cruise-Running, full-fueled ride. Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays explores the mind-bending chronal perils of time travel with Rian Johnson's 2012 Looper. Time travel may not be the career you're looking for. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Time Travel! Forty years ago we experienced the release of a movie that would become legend. Back to the Future was a tremendous success for Robert Zemeckis, Michael J. Fox, and Christopher Lloyd. (But maybe not Biff, so much) Of course, movie success demands sequels, so a few years later we got more. The trilogy ended in the old west with the third installment which is celebrating 35 years. The BTTF movies have many parallels, so we decided to find a bunch of them and compare the first and third movies. Join in on the fun and see how many you've spotted. Did you spot any more parallels? Great Scott...600 episodes?! To mark the occasion, I'm on a trip to 221B Baker Street with my favorite radio adventures of Sherlock Holmes. In this super-sized Sherlock special, we'll hear John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson in "A Scandal in Bohemia." Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are Holmes and Watson in "The Notorious Canary Trainer" (originally aired on Mutual on April 23, 1945) and "The Speckled Band" (originally aired on Mutual on November 12, 1945), and then Bruce is joined by Tom Conway as Holmes in "The Adventure of the Tolling Bell" (originally aired on ABC on April 7, 1947). My personal favorite Holmes and Watson - John Stanley and Alfred Shirley - headline "The Laughing Lemur of Hightower Heath" (originally aired on Mutual on October 26, 1947), "The Cadaver in the Roman Toga" (originally aired on Mutual on November 9, 1947), "The Stolen Naval Treaty" (originally aired on Mutual on November 23, 1947), and "The Case of the Sudden Senility" (originally aired on Mutual on January 11, 1948). And finally, it's - appropriately enough - "The Final Problem," with Gielgud, Richardson, and special guest star Orson Welles as Professor Moriarty. In the mood for more Holmes and Watson? Click here for our spotlight show on Edith Meiser, the woman who brought Holmes to radio and penned his adventures for years. And here's a collection of mysteries featuring Holmes and Watson battling seemingly supernatural foes.
