Join me by the fire for a soulful and deep conversation with Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory, whose work on Journey, Flow, The Banner Saga, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, and the new Towerborne has redefined what music can do in games. In this episode of Bonfire Conversations, we talk about childhood, creativity, meeting your heroes, memoirs, curiosity, and the emotional layers of composing for games. Austin shares his personal stories, creative philosophies, and a deep love for his craft.⚠️ A quick note: we had a few internet hiccups during the recording, so the video is a bit stuttery in places, but the audio is clear and the heart of the conversation shines through.Bonfire Conversations is available on YouTube and all the major podcast streaming services:https://li.sten.to/bdrq39ecTowerborne is out on Steam, and Xbox Series X|S.0:00 - Introduction2:46 - Meeting your heroes & learning from them14:58 - Childhood, environment, and creative influences26:29 - Drawing emotions from memories for music30:08 - The hardest part of the creative process35:58 - Questions for story creators44:51 - Penny for Your Thoughts: Quickfire Q&A45:02 - What DAW he uses45:15 - Soundtrack of his life49:45 - Non-musical inspiration54:24 - Changing his mind on important topics1:00:18 - Conclusion#Austinwintory #gamemusic #journeygame #towerborne #gamecomposer #creativity #podcast #interview

The Holidays are nearing their end, so lets not continue a trend. Instead of a top 10 again and again, we will look into the future and pretend to be wise men. The gaming is light, and movies alright, lets spend a short while, and talk with artistic style. OK, no more rhyming, we have some light news for you all this week, Sony and War Thunder have some heat, Insomniac stands tall and GTA Hacker gets sentenced. Meanwhile Peaches is out of season at the Oscars, Scream 7 loses its sails, and Aquaman swims slowly to a win. Plus my most anticipated in 2024.

It's everyone's favorite rhythm fighting game that doesn't exist yet, ‘Rhythm Rumble', back for more discussion in this week's NiceThinking Episode. Ellen learns a new word, Mark rants about Unity's PlayerPrefs, and Stephen admits that he still hasn't learned to take good notes. The main problems with the old prototype: not rhythmic enough and too simple. The beats the player had to match were up to the sixteenth note (quarter beat) which left players not understanding which beat they were playing to, and an impression of the game feeling sluggish Some thoughts from the discussion -Use beat patterns rather than make people keep the beat -Being able to store (and playback) beats to conjure special moves -Give the instruments personality to the fighting moves they can make -Make the game into a metaphor, give it personality - these beats might control instruments, which control rock-em-sock-em robots, rather than making the avatars hit each other with a very expensive bass clarinet. After nine years of releasing a weekly podcast featuring interviews of developers of videogames of all shapes and sizes, it's now time to look inward to see how The Sausage Factory is made… http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/sausage/TSF_Episode400.mp3 Music is taken from Forced (the game featured in the first episode), The Banner Saga 3 (from episode 200), and The Source of Madness (from Episode 401) 1. Morituri te Salutant - Theme of FORCED2. The True Hero Comes Reluctantly - Banner Saga 33. Dungeon of Forgotten - The Source of Madness The Sausage Factory 400 was edited by Chris O'Regan The Sausage Factory is an interview-based podcast that lifts the lid on the makers of videogames. It examines the way in which games are made by asking the very people who create them, though the questions asked aren't just about game design, they also cover how developers made their start and what inspires them as creators. Split into two halves, the first segment delves into what makes the developers tick by asking about how they started, what and who inspires them and what games they are currently playing, whereas the second part of the show covers the game that they are currently working on and the thought processes behind its development. So, if you really want to hear about a game's gestation in full and frank detail then you have found the right podcast.

Welcome to the first episode of Storytelling Breakdown. Without any further delay, our team would like to welcome you to our pop culture deep dive podcast leaving no story untold. Our lives are defined by the stories that are poured into us. That can be (comic) books we read, shows we binge, games we can spend hours playing, and movies we can't stop talking about. There's so much to storytelling in so many mediums and our exploration starts now. We'll begin with one of fiction's greatest villains, who often speaks to an audience like he's the star of his own show. The white face, colorful suit, and terrifying grin of the Joker have stood up to eighty years of interpretation and our deep dive serves as a belated happy birthday. The Banner Saga is the subject of this episode's Spotlight portion and we'll hear more from Caleb Meyer.Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. On Sound of Gaming we celebrate the greatest music from the best video games, but what about the almost hits? The should've-beens? The has-beens? What happens to the music when a game gets cancelled, a character is changed or a game is taken off the shelves? Today Sound of Gaming is dedicated to Lost Masterpieces - music that could have been heard by millions of players but instead has been lost to the whims of history and the creative process, with never before heard gems from composers like Joris de Man, The Flight and Jim Guthrie. The BAFTA winning composer Austin Wintory - well known for his work on games like Journey, Abzu and the Banner Saga - talks to Jessica today not about his hits, but about the 'ones that got away', music he's written for pitches that didn't make it and games that didn't see the light of day. Plus music from games such as Alien: Isolation, Chrono Trigger and Borderlands 3 that didn't find its way into the game, plus a lost gem of a game score by composer Michael Nyman and other treats you just don't hear enough. Austin Wintory - Crude Gum Joris de Man - Knights (unreleased) Raison Varner - General Traunt Sketch (Borderlands 3 - unreleased) Austin Wintory- Death Arisen Austin Wintory - Squares Austin Wintory - A Guessing Game Austin Wintory - Oases Michael Nyman - Enemy Zero (Enemy Zero) The Flight - The Space Jockey (Alien Isolation - unreleased) Yasunori Mitsuda - The Singing Mountain (Chrono Trigger - unreleased) Frank Ilfman - Akiro (Akiro - unreleased) Chris Hülsbeck - The Great Giana Sisters Suite (excerpt) Austin Wintory - Whiskers and Beams Austin Wintory - The Call (Journey) Hitoshi Sakimoto - Staff Roll (Vagrant Story) Jim Guthrie - You, Me and the Sun Swallowing Sea (Below - unreleased) King George's Hall, Blackburn Presented by Tom McKinney
AUSTIN WINTORY has built his career on exploring and curiosity. He began his obsession with composing back when he was ten years old, when he discovered Jerry Goldsmith's scores to Patton and A Patch of Blue. He has composed music for video games such as the multi-award winning Journey from ThatGameCompany, for Stoic Studio's THE BANNER SAGA, and Squid Studio's ABZU AND Ubisofts ASSASSIN'S CREED: SYNDICATE. Additionally, he has written over 50 original scores for film including his first, the Sundance-Festival-winning CAPTAIN ABU RAED. Outside of games, Austin also maintains a busy concert composing schedule, with regular appearances throughout the world. Austin Wintory's most recent original score is for the interactive murder mystery game, ERICA, developed by Flavourworks and released by Sony Entertainment. In the game, you become Erica, a brave young lady plagued with nightmares of your father's murder. With the traumatic events that have haunted you as a child dragged back into the light of the present day via grisly new clues, it's up to you to unearth the shocking truth behind this devastating tragedy. Every choice you make influences how the game develops, with multiple endings awaiting you at the finale of the emotional branching narrative. In this episode, Austin Wintory takes us beneath the murder-mystery of ERICA to reveal some of the intricate details of creating an original score for this extremely interactive game. He shares how key themes are combined and contrasted, throughout the game, based on the players choices and the resulting atmospheric and even narrative effects. Austin Wintory also unveils how he came to utilize Delphic maxims as lyrics within his score.ANNOTATED TRACKS / SEGMENTS02:49 - Introduction and background04:44 - Main Theme/ Know Thyself07:01 - The Aria for Delphi08:50 - A Lost Home09:48 - They are Going to Lie to You13:46 - Another World Beneath17:21 - Respect the OracleSOUNDTRACKThe original soundtrack for Erica was released by Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe on August 20, 2019 and is available digitally on Amazon.com and iTunes. Get your gaming pants on because it's time for another huge episode of GGSP! This week we review the weird and whacky take on the classic game of pool in Pool Panic, and the epic tactical RPG of The Banner Saga 3! Plus, more of your questions answered at the Ask SP desk, and your weekly Scoop of gaming news!
Today is the day The Banner Saga 3 releases on PS4, Xbox One, PC and the Switch. This is the final game in the turn-based trilogy from Stoic Studio featuring devs from Bioware. Austin has been diving into this game from The Banner Saga 1 and has completed the entire game with his full review. This series was a blast and we can't wait to share it with you. We also play an up to 9 player shared screen game called Runbow. This game involves platforming in which colors change to make platforms literally disappear. It's a blast to play with friends with tons of game modes. In our news, we talk about all the money made with Fortnite and Microsoft, what happened after the PT port got cancelled and the new Spiderman trailer. We also talk about all the new changes in No Man's Sky for their next update called Next. Finally, we have a really exciting discussion topic this week on game length and replayability. Josef Feres, director of A Way Out, talked about how he's tired of people judging a game by its length. We discuss if there should be an ideal length for a game and why replayability is important in a game. With so many games out there, sometimes it's important to stick with a few. Octopath Traveler is finally here and we carry through with our save into the game world itself. This game is long and it will be quite the journey but I think we're ready. Brett tries out the new Pokemon Go like game called The Walking Dead: Our World. It's similar in vein to Pokemon Go with a bit more time-gating. Finally, Austin is playing through The Banner Saga 2 in prep for The Banner Saga 3 at the end of July. In our news we talk about some of the major enhancements to Warframe, Shroud getting banned from PUBG for a month and the major updates to Fortnite with Season 5. Finally, our discussion has us looking back on the first half of 2018 with our top 3 games thus far. Then we look forward into the rest of 2018. There is a storm of new games coming and the crew shares their most anticipated games. Dane Batzel joins us again from Game Night Dallas for the podcast! The Banner Saga released over 4 years ago but has finally been released on the Switch. Naturally, we decide to jump in and see what this franchise is all about before the release of The Banner Saga 3 this month. We also play some Fortnite and find the mysterious launch of Season 5 to catch our interest. Turns out a rocket created a rift in the sky and who knows what will come out of that. But it's growing… This week in news, Life is Strange 2 was announced as well as a Halo TV series with Showtime. In addition, Sony is having some woes when they won't allow crossplay like everyone else. Overwatch also revealed their new hero...a hamster? We talk about what Hammond is all about. Finally, our discussion is all about video game streaming. Not Twitch streaming, actual game streaming versus downloaded content. Xbox hinted at it, Playstation already does it and the PC is looking into it. What will we see come our way in the next few years with streaming? We've got the latest war shooter announcements, OnRush impressions, reviews of Axiom Verge and The Banner Saga. The post BRB UK 294: The Switch Boys appeared first on BigRedBarrel.
Ahoy matey! The open sea, pirate simulator adventure game has arrived from the fine folks at Rare. We got our hands on it and share our initial impressions surrounding this shared world pirate game. We find buried treasure, chickens and skeletons all over. We also play the survival game Kona that we first encountered at PAX South 2017. Devan of course can't stop playing the Switch and he also jumps into a game called The Bridge. Is it worth jumping into? Listen to find out! In our news, Nintendo had their Spring nindies announcements with games like Banner Saga 3, West of Loathing and Light Fall coming soon to the Switch. Riot, Twitch and Blizzard are also working to minimize toxic behavior in video games and Atari unveils the name of the Ataribox: Atari VCS. Our discussion this week is on all the cooperative games coming out this year. We have a slew of them coming our way and it got us thinking: is this good or bad? We've been wanting good co-op games for years but now that we're getting our hands on them we're noticing some of their pitfalls such as finding friends to play with, matching skill levels and keeping us interested for a long period of time. In 2014, Stoic Games released their Kickstarter indie darling The Banner Saga to massive success. Hailed as "The Oregon Trail, but with fighting and a Norse apocalypse," The Banner Saga went on to generate a sequel as well as a third installment that recently found success on Kickstarter. The high-stakes, turn-based RPG took players on a journey through a hand-painted world full of mystery and intrigue, where it felt like one wrong move could unravel tenuous alliances or get people killed.
