That remarkable outcome is exactly what one family reported after experiencing the immersive environment created by Burble Creativity.Jay Goth, CEO of Burble Creativity, has joined forces with inventor Taylor Cole to bring to life a new form of storytelling called "minimally defined immersive storytelling." In this approach, children step into a multisensory tent where lights, sounds, and sparse narrative cues combine to unleash their imagination. "When you're done, each one of them will have their own specific version of that story, which is really cool and very, very new and unique," Jay explained. The tent's multisensory environment has proven especially beneficial for neurodivergent children, particularly those on the autism spectrum. Jay shared a powerful example: "Her child had never slept through the night. And after her story time's telling session, the kid actually slept through the night for the first time in his life. That was remarkable."Motivated by the product's potential to do good, Jay brought his deep entrepreneurial and angel investing experience to Burble. He saw not only an opportunity to make a positive social impact, but also to build a sustainable business around it. Jay and the Burble team made a conscious decision to raise capital through regulation crowdfunding rather than traditional venture capital."I wanted to go directly to the community through a crowdfunding program," Jay said. "So that the members of the community could actively be involved in the development of the company as partial owners."Burble Creativity is currently raising funds through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign, allowing anyone to invest and become part of the mission to bring this therapeutic storytelling experience to more families. Interested supporters can visit s4g.biz/Burble to learn more about the campaign.Jay's vision for Burble is about more than business. It's about creating tools that foster peace, imagination, and healing for children who experience the world differently. For me, hosting this episode was not just a pleasure—it was a glimpse into a brighter, more inclusive future.tl;dr:Jay Goth explains Burble's innovative storytelling tent, helping neurodivergent children engage imagination and find calm.He shares the tent's success with autistic children, including one who slept through the night for the first time.Jay discusses his path from angel investing to becoming CEO of Burble to promote conscious capitalism. He reveals his superpower: recognizing and nurturing others' superpowers through deep listening and mentorship.Jay encourages community investment via crowdfunding to support Burble's mission and social impact. How to Develop Empowering Others As a SuperpowerJay Goth's superpower is his ability to see the potential in others and help them realize it. Reflecting on his career, Jay said, “My superpower is really understanding the superpower in others.” He explained that his passion lies in identifying what drives people and finding ways to support them in achieving their goals. One touching story Jay shared exemplifies how he uses this superpower. While working in investor relations, he mentored a colleague, Chris Rosgen, helping him develop a strong reputation in the industry as a “real bulldog.” Chris thrived under Jay's mentorship, growing into a respected leader. Jay's guidance left a lasting impact, and the experience remains a cherished memory.Jay also highlighted the importance of listening to others as a key to identifying their strengths. “We have two ears and one mouth for a reason,” he said, emphasizing the need to understand people's passions and help them channel those into their success.Tips for Developing This Superpower:Listen Actively: Focus on understanding someone's passions and goals instead of planning your next response.Identify Strengths: Pay attention to what excites and motivates people to uncover their unique talents.Mentor with Purpose: Provide guidance and support to help others grow into their potential.Encourage Self-Belief: Help people see their own strengths and develop confidence in their abilities.By following Jay's example and advice, you can make identifying and nurturing potential a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. The featured radio show presents a unique holiday anthology, combining elements of mystery, nostalgia, and the supernatural, delivered through captivating storytelling and immersive soundscapes. Setting the stage for a chilling yet festive atmosphere, the show invites listeners to embrace the spectral charm of the season while enjoying an eclectic mix of narratives revolving around familial bonds, unexpected occurrences, and the perennial question of fate versus free will. The first story begins with a festive backdrop of holiday travelers contending with a severe snowstorm. A couple, Joan and Skip Bartram, embark on a long-awaited journey to visit family for Christmas after being away for years. As their excitement builds for a family reunion, they take an unmarked detour down a desolate highway, unaware that the road leads them to an eerie ghost town devoid of people. The unexpected adventure unfolds with their car crashing, prompting them to seek refuge in an ominous hotel that becomes a vessel of suspense and mystery. As the atmosphere grows increasingly tense and surreal, they encounter a seemingly kind but enigmatic local woman, Mrs. McGinnis, whose behavior hints at something darker stirring within the town's haunting silence.Transitioning into the second half of the show, the narratives shift to more intimate, character-driven tales. With the simplistic charm of holiday gatherings and the somber tones of realization and reflection, a deeper exploration of familial ties emerges. The characters grapple with their pasts, past decisions, and the sometimes burdensome weight of expectations, all under the looming shadow of Christmas. A distinctive thread emerges through the stories as characters ponder the nature of their existence, their roles within their families, and the supernatural forces at work that seem to dictate their destinies. The classic elements of mystery—secret legacies, inexplicable sightings, and the question of generational curses—play out through richly drawn interactions, leading to poignant moments of revelation. As unforeseen consequences unwind, characters draw closer to their truths, discovering what truly matters as they navigate the complexities of their fates. In a powerful thematic conclusion, the final narrative emphasizes notions of redemption, sacrifice, and the cyclical nature of giving and accepting love. By weaving through chilling circumstances and existential reflections, listeners are left to ponder the connections that bind us, the memories we cherish, and the bonds that linger beyond the grave. The show ultimately invites an introspective look at the essence of the holiday spirit, reminding us of the bittersweet truths of life, love, and loss while leaving listeners with a lingering sense of mystery and wonder. The multifaceted storytelling style employed throughout the radio show serves as a reminder of the rich tapestry of human experience during the holidays, juxtaposing warmth and light against cold and darkness. In the end, the enigmatic nature of fate and familial ties encapsulates the essence of the season—reminding all that the unknown may hold hidden gifts, even in the most chilling of circumstances.

I interviewed All I Know About Teacher Li director Zhuzmo at Venice Immersive 2024. Due to the sensitivities of the topic of Chinese censorship, then the director Zhuzmo has requested that he remain anonymous. I did an interview face to face with them in Venice, got a transcript, and then fed the text back into a text-to-speech AI at Eleven Labs in order to mask his voice. See more context in the rough transcript below. All I Know About Teacher Li also happened to top the unofficial Venice Immersive 2024 Survey results that I did in collaboration with XR Must for both the Top 5 as well as for the Audience Favorites. I found last year's survey results to be really useful in organizing the order of discussing pieces in our critic's roundtable, but also helping to understand the audience's reaction to the selection. Last year there were 50 respondents, and this year there were 82 respondents who on average saw 21.9 experiences each. Here's a list of the Most Seen experiences from Venice Immersive 2024, which is sort of a proxy for popularity and buzz, but also throughput. The next result is the audience favorites (no limit), which is calculated by how many people listed it as a favorite relative to how many saw it. This tends to have the most robust overview of the entire selection, and is also an interesting calibration process to see what you personally liked vs what might have been favored by the zeitgeist.  Finally the top 5 ranking usually is a proxy for seeing which projects might have been in the running for a jury prize, but there was a lot more variance this year, which was reflected in the range of projects that people were predicting to be a prize winner. The top prize from the jury was awarded to Ito Meikyu, which was ranked 10th by the audience. The second place from the jury went to Oto's Planet, which was ranked 5th. And then the third place from the jury went to Impulse: Playing with Reality, which was ranked 2nd. I find it increasingly difficult to predict what will resonate with the jury as even the audience favorites can vary widely from my own personal favorites. Again what resonates with you may not resonate with others, and there are so many other qualities and nuances of each project that can't be reduced down to numbers. Nonetheless, I found last year's survey results to be quite an interesting cross section and sometimes confirms an intuition and many other times can be surprising. Either way, it's additional data to help make sense of the selection and the industry. Here's my top 10 that I published after finishing watching all of the pieces on Wednesday, August 28th. I about watched 1/3 of the pieces ahead of the festival, 1/3 on the press preview, and the remaining 1/3 on the press & industry day and the first day bookings are available. Also, the essence of each project can't be reduced down to numbers, which is a big motivation that I have to record over 30 hours of coverage for Venice Immersive 2024 over the course of 5 days in order to unpack more of the design process, experiential design tradeoffs, and some of my own embodied experiences and impressions. #1416: Preview of Venice Immersive 2024 Innovations in Immersive Storytelling & Art Installations with Curators #1417: Kicking Off Venice Immersive Converge with Translating "Riven" Classic Point-and-Click Adventure to Open World VR Puzzler #1418: Award-Winning Animators Experiment with Sandbox Social VR "Garden Alchemy" Research Project #1419: Creating a Four-Sided Pepper's Ghost Pyramid Illusion with "Telos I" Dance Piece #1420: Experimental Documentary "Mammary Mountain" Captures Oral Histories of Breast Cancer Journeys #1421: Interactive Mixed Reality Doc on ADHD "Impulse: Playing With Reality" Takes Home Immersive Achievement Prize at Venice Immersive 2024 #1422: A Simple Silence Wraps Up Craig Quintero's Trilogy Exploring Spatial Transformations & Immersive Encounters

The 8th edition of the Venice Immersive 2024 will be kicking off on August 28th, which will be featuring over 28 hours of immersive storytelling and immersive art content across over 70 different projects. This year there area a lot more immersive installations representing over a third out of the total number of on-site projects (18 out of the 52). There's eight mixed reality projects, a couple of projects featuring haptics, and one that prominently featuring AI character interactions. There are also 20 VRChat worlds in the Worlds Gallery along with 3 VRChat worlds in competition with 1 project that's using Resonite social VR platform. I had a chance to catch up with the co-curators Liz Rosenthal and Michel Reilhac again this year to get a sneak peak of the 26 projects in competition as well as 9 of the projects within the Best of Selection (note we talk about 10 Best of experiences, but it was announced just this morning that the Apple Vision Pro experience Adventure was pulled from the festival after attendees who had it booked received a message from Vivaticket saying, "we regret to inform you that the immersive experience Adventure for which you made a reservation has been cancelled" ). We also talk about how there's going to be a private think tank on September 1st looking at LBE distribution challenges and opportunities. Be sure to check out their previous report titled "Think Tank: Immediate Options to Address the Pressing Needs of Immersive Distribution." 17 out of the 20 VRChat worlds in the Worlds Gallery are already currently publicly available, and the three that are not are Concrete: Pale Sands, SNR Labs Test Facility, and Sanctum (though this one will be available after the festival run). Each of these are featuring some volumetric and holographic shaders that VJs are using in the VRChat clubbing scene, which I covered extensively in my previous three episodes, particularly in #1415 talking with two VRChat VJs and a DJ about the evolution of volumetric effects in music shows. But also check out #1413 where I talk with the SNR Labs team and in #1414 about how dancer SoftlySteph used the holographic shader tech that's demonstrated in the SNR Labs Test Facility experience. Below is a cheat sheet of the Venice Immersive 2024 experiences ordered by length. Note that the Free UR Head is actually closer to 55 minutes, and that Adventure is no longer in the Best of Selection. Also included is a copy of the map for where the experiences are located with some quality of life improvements that I made so that the text is all horizontal and a bit easier to read. I also have a version of the Venice Immersive experience map with the length of the experience embedded to make it easier for when you may be in standby mode. Here are links to the Best of Experiences that are publicly available: Museum Alive Immersive With David Attenborough [Apple Vision Pro], Nightmara: Episode 3, The 7th Guest VR, Riven, Astra, 40 Dias Sem O Sol (40 Days Without The Sun), & What If…? - An Immersive Story [Apple Vision Pro]. And here's the links to the VRChat worlds that are featured in the Venice Immersive Worlds Gallery. 17 of the 20 are currently publicly available. Sanctum should be available once the festival starts, and there aren't currently plans or availability dates for replayable versions of Concrete: Pale Sands or SNR Labs: Test Facility as of the publication of this episode. The official Venice Immersive Hub in VRChat will be launching on August 28th with in-world portals to each of these worlds. 1 MormoVerse˸ Under the pillow 2.1 Finishing Touch - Art Studio & Gallery 2.2 VRC Museum 2.3 Phatta 3 Liminal Dreams˸ The Poolrooms 4 Endless Residents Super Ultra Deluxe Edition 5 Magnetize 6.1 Magic AI-Art˸ Dimensions 6.2 Exoplanet Journey 7 SUKU 8.1 Chromatic Frequency 8.2 Sanctum 8.3 Overview Effect Experience 9.1 Smew Brushǃ 9.2 ․⁄ complication 9.

Have you ever found yourself in the presence of someone you love dearly and had nothing to say? The silence, not indicative of your care for the other, nor of your desire to connect with them, and yet there were no words you could grasp to articulate the depth or quality of your connection to them. Or, have you found yourself in the same looped pattern of conversation with someone you love? Feeling as though you were treading the same path repeatedly, and it was simply exhausting? Or, even worse, it was deteriorating your connection. We all crave connection. But sometimes we need help getting there. Topaz Adizes offers a guide to having the conversations that can lead to that connection in his latest book, 12 Questions for Love: A Guide to Intimate Conversations and Deeper Relationships. ILM Immersive & Marvel Studios is releasing What If...?: An Immersive Story exclusively on Apple Vision Pro tomorrow, and I had a chance to take an early look and speak with producer and executive producer Shereif Fattouh as well as technical art director Indira Guerrieri about the process of creating this experience. It's mostly an immersive story with light interactions, but you can't actually die and so it's more about immersing yourself into these worlds with first-person embodiment and exploring around 10 different gesture-based interactions in nearly 50 different interactive moments across the 40 to 45-minute experience. There's also some disembodied moments where you're watching 3D movie cinematics on shards of glass floating in the environment, and so they're also really leaning into how good 3D movies look on the Apple Vision Pro within this experience. Overall, it's blending lots of elements together that feels like something new and a new genre of immersive storytelling that's building upon existing IP, and giving new opportunities to engage with these character's stories as well as their worlds. This is also the first Unreal Engine experience releasing on the Apple Vision Pro store, and so Fattouh told me that ILM Immersive has been making private modifications to get things working. There are features like mixed reality passthrough that are not available yet in Unreal Engine 5.4 yet. Agile Lens' Alex Coulombe told me, "The Epic Games XR team is small so I would I err on the side of assuming no major Vision Pro updates coming soon from Epic. To have the current features working it still requires a source build of Unreal Engine 5.4 (the Epic Games Launcher doesn't work) and current features include fully immersive mode, hand tracking / gesture recognition, forward and deferred rendering." So hopefully we'll get more on this soon from Epic Games, but at least we know it's possible and we'll start to see more Unreal Engine experiences on the Apple Vision Pro soon. Voices of VR Podcast – Designing for Virtual Reality

One of the most common ways to describe the experience of VR is through the lens of presence, and in this episode I'm going to do a deep dive into the existing academic literature of presence in order to more fully contextualize my approach to it. This is my Storycon 2022 keynote where I elaborate on my elemental approach to presence as well as my thoughts on experiential design and immersive storytelling. I use the four archetypal elements to break down presence into four primary components where fire represents active presence, air represents mental and social presence, water represents emotional presence, and earth represents embodied and environmental presence. And I use the lens of quality, context, character, and story to explore the fundamental components of experiential design. I started to develop my approach to presence through a number of Voices of VR podcast interviews in the fall and winter of 2016, and I was then introduced to the work of Dustin Chertoff, whose presence work from 2008-2010 draws upon the field of experiential marketing. He similarly boils presence down into the components of Active Presence, Cognitive Presence, Relational Presence, Affective Presence, and Sensory Presence. When I interviewed Chertoff in February 2017, we agreed that our approaches to presence were functionally identical. I then went on to present my preliminary ideas on presence at a Silicon Valley Virtual Reality conference keynote in March 2017, and I've continued to develop these ideas over the past 5-7 years. I gave this Storycon Keynote on May 5, 2022, which happened to be the 8th-year anniversary of the Voices of VR podcast. Now two years later, I'm celebrating my 10-year Voices of VR podcast anniversary in part by airing this talk as well as a few others. I consistently refer folks to it as one of my more fully-formed and rigorous elaborations that I've given of my elemental theory of presence. I not only contextualize it with Chertoff's work, but also with the broader body of academic presence research and it's history. I would often find there were would be different presence theories talking about some of the same concepts, but using different terminology. In this talk, I take an archetypal approach that synthesizes these different frameworks through an archetypal lens. At times it can be a bit laborious reciting an archetypal complex of keywords, and there are definitely sections of this talk that are probably better off read than spoken. So I'd highly recommend also checking out the video version as well as the PDF of the slides, and/or the fully-annotated transcript in the shownotes that includes the embedded slides and linked citations. That all being said, be warned that this is still probably way too dense for an hour-long talk, as it's more like an entire semester's worth of material. It's also probably closer to a Ph.D. defense than a synthesized book or practical handbook that's ready for prime time. As with many other aspects of XR, many theoretical aspects are still developing, emerging, boundaries being pushed, and rules being broken. So it's in that spirit that this is my latest fully-formed iteration of these ideas. This talk also leans more into the theoretical parts, and some of the more practical applications often come within the context of individual interviews where the context is a lot more bounded to a specific situation, experience, or story. Be sure to check out my 30+ hours of coverage from Venice 2023 as an example for how I've put these ideas into practice. It's been through many invited lectures and keynotes around the world where I've been able to develop these ideas by engaging with audiences and interviewing thousands of creators over the past decade. At some point, I'm still hoping to go through a more formal write-up of these ideas to give them even more rigor, and perhaps potentially even go through a more formalized peer-review process. But as of now,

His chart-topping shows American Scandal, American History Tellers and History Daily reach millions every month, using immersive sound design, a rich original score, and meticulous research to bring moving, character-driven stories that demonstrate “history is human.” His newest podcast is American Criminal, a “true crime podcast that tells the stories of the most infamous criminals in the history of the United States, revealing the men and women who cheated, lied, and murdered in their own twisted pursuit of the American dream.” Graham is the CEO and founder of Airship, a podcast publishing company. He is a podcast producer, sound designer and composer who has worked on Dirty John, Dr. Death, Bad Batch and others, reaching hundreds of millions of listeners. If you liked this episode, you'll love Sound Judgment Season 1, Episode 8, How Top Hosts Hook Their Listeners in 60 Seconds or Less. Takeaways from my conversation with Lindsay: In several of its shows, including American History Tellers, American Scandal, History Daily and Business Wars, Wondery employs a format that's always been controversial. They call it “immersive storytelling.” It relies on a single narrator to voice all or most of the characters in an episode. It also employs fictionalized reenactments. As Lindsay says – some people hate this. “I can't do anything about it,” he says, “cause that's the show.” He also says, “I can't help those people who want it to be different than it is.” And that's the lesson: Choose what your show IS and lean into it. YOUR people will love it. If you do your job well, some people may, in fact, hate it. That's OK. It's not for them. When they conduct historical research, Lindsay and his writers aren't just cataloging facts. They're on a treasure hunt to learn how the characters felt and how people in their lives felt about them. Those emotions make the historical world feel real, increase the stakes, and keep listeners glued to their headphones. This isn't your father's history class. Here's a tip for anyone leading a team: Create editorial guidelines and share them with everyone – writers, producers, sound designers, and engineers. Guidelines are great for onboarding newcomers. They also help make sure everyone is on the same page. Originally, Lindsay made a narrative podcast out of the American History Tellers guidelines; that's a memorable way to get this information across. Whatever you do, remember that editorial guidelines are living documents – keep them up to date. Lindsay calls himself a champion thinker, but an “apprentice do-er.” Self-doubt and perfectionism gets in his way, as they did with his long-delayed introduction of the subscription service Into History. Once he stopped overthinking and started taking one step after another, introducing this new product turned out to be easier than he thought. Why do our relationships only reach a certain depth? Why can we only achieve a certain level of conversation or emotional awareness within these relationships? How can we dig deeper to establish fulfilling relationships? In this episode of the Happiness Happens podcast, Topaz Adizes, an Emmy award-winning writer, director, and experienced design architect joins me for a conversation on the power of human connection. Topaz's work boasts a revered collection of accolades, including selections to prestigious platforms such as Cannes, Sundance, IDFA, and South by Southwest. His productions have seen features in prominent outlets such as the New Yorker Magazine, Vanity Fair, and the New York Times, earning him an Emmy for New Approaches to Documentary and two World Press Photo Awards for Immersive Storytelling and Interactive Documentary.  Topaz is the founder and executive director of the experiential design studio, The Skin Deep. This unique venture uses its digital channels to provide what Topaz refers to as "digital doses of humanity." Utilizing methodologies from card games to conducting face-to-face interactions, the project offers a distinctive way for people to approach communication and relationships.  In our discussion, Topaz touched on his new book, "The 12 Questions for Love," emphasizing the power of asking well-structured questions to facilitate a deeper understanding of each other within a relationship. According to him, the two most powerful questions from his book include, "what pain in me do you wish you could heal?" and "what experience do you wish we never had?". In the face of the common habit of seeking answers, Topaz advises his readers and listeners to instead focus on creating better questions. By focusing on the question, we set ourselves up for conversations that are more empowering, constructive, and provide a stronger sense of agency. Humans are incredible beings capable of adaptation, and as we continue to adapt to the changing ways of our society, we can reshape our outlook and feelings towards each other. The vision of Topaz echoes throughout our conversation, reminding us of the undeniable power that well-crafted questions possess. Climate Education for YouthClimate education has the potential to drive the public towards climate science literacy, an individual's understanding of their influence on climate and climate's influence on them and society. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a climate-literate person: understands the essential principles of Earth's climate system, knows how to assess scientifically credible information about climate, communicates about climate and climate change in a meaningful way, andis able to make informed and responsible decisions with regard to actions that may affect climate.Climate change education is more than just science education; it is an interdisciplinary topic that involves understanding the relationship between climate change, history, economics, social studies, and more. A robust and interdisciplinary climate education provides an understanding of the large-scale social transformation necessary to increase climate resiliency and implement effective solutions.Empowering Future Solution Makers Climate education can provide younger generations with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that are necessary to make more environmentally informed decisions. By equipping students with a thorough understanding of climate science and illuminating the scientific process utilized by climate scientists, students become armed to critically assess climate discourse and solutions. Moreover, climate education fosters a sense of agency: youth may grow up to vote for climate positive policies, pursue careers that strive towards climate solutions, have a more eco-conscious lifestyle, or facilitate constructive conversations with family members and friends. Implementing effective climate solutions relies on an informed public, and climate education provides youth with a starting point to act as agents of positive change amidst our planetary emergency. Additionally, climate education can provide youth with the tools necessary to alleviate and cope with climate anxiety. A 2021 Lancet Study asked 10,000 young people between the ages of 16–25 in ten countries what they felt about climate change, and found that more than 50% of young people reported experiencing sadness, anxiety, anger, powerlessness, helplessness, and guilt. Effective climate education will not only help youth understand the causes and impacts of climate change, but it will also provide young people with insight on how they can contribute to solutions and exercise their own agency to make meaningful changes. Further, climate education can provide coping strategies by fostering hope and highlighting the collective efforts being made to address climate change. Barriers to Effective Climate Education According to an article from Science, data from 1500 public middle- and high-school science teachers from all 50 US states found that the median teacher devotes only one to two hours to climate change instruction. Climate confusion among U.S. teachers further contributes to this educational gap within American education, and limited training and scientific consensus among teachers leads to mixed messages. For example, the research published in Science found that of the teachers who teach climate change, “31% report sending explicitly contradictory messages, emphasizing both the scientific consensus that recent global warming is due to human activity and that many scientists believe recent increases in temperature are due to natural causes.” Progress in climate science and scientific consensus have outpaced teachers' training. Additionally, teachers may face political threats and external pressures from parents or administration to avoid climate instruction. Teachers' lack of knowledge on climate science and exclusion of climate instruction is further compounded by variations in learning standards and requirements. Climate education within the US faces challenges due to the absence of consensus on the inclusion of climate change in educational curricula and the absence of national science standards on the subject. In 2013, the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were developed and recommended that human-made climate change be taught in all science classes beginning in fifth grade. However, these standards remain voluntary, and 44 states have used the NGSS or created standards based on them. Since 2007, The Campaign for Environmental Literacy has continued to organize stakeholders and push for passage of the Climate Change Education Act, leading to the subsequent efforts to reintroduce and pass the bill four times since then. Despite these efforts, federal grants to fund climate change education projects have been miniscule and initiatives inCongress to support climate change education have been unsuccessful. New Jersey became a pioneer in climate education in 2020, becoming the first state to mandate the teaching of climate change beginning in kindergarten. Notably, New Jersey has taken an interdisciplinary approach to climate education as students are learning about climate change in ceramics and physical education classes. Making Climate Change Education Accessible and Engaging for YouthOutside of the traditional classroom setting, many environmental organizations, activists, content creators, and informal education institutions like museums or zoos provide opportunities for students to engage in climate education. Collectively, these actors play critical roles as environmental educators who bridge the educational gaps related to climate change and increase climate literacy amongst young people. In an era dominated by digital communication, media serves as a dynamic and influential tool in climate education initiatives. In a survey conducted by the EdWeek Research Center, social media emerged as the third most frequently mentioned source of information on climate change amongst teenagers. Young people consume climate-related media through various social media platforms, like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Environmental educators understand that leveraging various forms of media allows them to create engaging, relatable, and inspiring climate education for today's youth. While leveraging these platforms to educate youth and the wider public on climate change, storytelling remains a central element. Media-driven climate education empowers environmental educators to effectively break down barriers and make climate science more accessible, relatable, and inspiring for youth of all ages. Who is Suzie Hicks?Suzie Hicks is an award-winning filmmaker, author and television host specializing in environmental communication for kids of all ages. Karen Palmer is the Storyteller from the Future. She's an award-winning international artist and TED Speaker who is at the forefront of immersive storytelling, futurism, and tech.  She creates immersive film experiences that watch you back using artificial intelligence and facial recognition. Karen has been the opening keynote speaker at AT&T Shape Conference, MIT, Wired for Wonder Festival Australia, and TEDx Australia at the Sydney Opera House. She's exhibited around the world, including NYC Armoury Arts Week, Museum of Modern Art Peru, PHI Centre Montreal, and more. Her art has also been featured in publications like Wired, Fast Company, and The Guardian, where they hailed her work as "leapfrogging over VR." Her latest project is Consensus Gentium which had its world debut at SXSW this past March where Karen also won the SXSW 2023 Film & TV Jury Award in the XR Experience Category. Consensus Gentium is a powerful exploration of the implications of A.I. technology. Experienced on a mobile device, Consensus Gentium taps into the intimacy and authenticity of your smartphone features to create a realistic experience. Set in a near future, it is an emotionally responsive film that integrates cutting-edge facial detection and A.I. to transport audiences on a unique quest to discover what could happen if we succumb to unchecked surveillance.  Karen and I first met at SXSW this past March and then saw each other again at Ars Electronica this September, and I couldn't be more excited to have her come from the future to speak to the Creativity Squared community.  In this episode, you'll learn more about Karen and her latest project Consensus Gentium in addition to her social justice approach to her work that explores A.I. bias and unchecked surveillance. You'll understand why she sees it necessary to democratize A.I., how you can experience the future today through her “reality simulators,” and how she uses immersive art to make you conscious of your subconscious behavior.  Don't miss this glimpse into the future! Two of my favorite experiences at Venice Immersive this year were from Taiwan, All That Remains and The Man Who Couldn't Leave, which took the top jure prize this year. Red Tail was another animated piece from Taiwan that was selected for competition. Taiwan has consistently had a really strong showing of immersive stories at Venice Immersive over the past number of years, which is somewhat surprising given that the country only has 27 million residents. I sat down with Grace Lee, the Director of Content & Culture Technology Department, Taiwan Creative Content Agency, and Sebox Hong of the Kaohsiung Film Festival in order to unpack more of what's happening within the Taiwanese Immersive Storytelling community and how the government is encouraging citizens to share their stories and cultural identity through the latest immersive technologies.
