    Ivy Insights

The Feminist Frequency Radio podcast is an important and thought-provoking show that delves into the intersections of feminism and pop culture. Led by hosts Anita Sarkeesian, Carolyn Petit, and Ebony Aster, the podcast explores a wide range of media, including film, TV shows, books, and video games, from a feminist lens. The discussions are engaging and intelligent, shedding light on societal issues and providing valuable insights into the representation of gender in popular media.

One of the best aspects of this podcast is the diversity of perspectives brought by each host. Anita Sarkeesian rose to prominence with her YouTube series "Tropes vs. Women in Video Games," and her expertise in analyzing the portrayal of women in media shines through in the podcast. Carolyn Petit's background as a former game reviewer adds depth to their discussions on gaming. Ebony Aster provides a unique perspective as a queer black woman, bringing intersectionality to the forefront of their conversations. This combination creates dynamic and enriching dialogue that offers multiple angles for analysis.

Another positive aspect is the willingness of the hosts to critique media while still appreciating it. They recognize that it is possible to enjoy something while also acknowledging its flaws and problematic aspects. The podcast encourages listeners to engage critically with popular culture rather than simply consuming it mindlessly.

However, one criticism would be the lack of coverage on video games in recent episodes. Some long-time listeners express disappointment over the shift away from video game reviews and discussions that were once a significant part of the show's content. While occasional episodes do touch upon games, there is a desire for more consistent coverage within this medium.

In conclusion, The Feminist Frequency Radio podcast offers insightful and entertaining analysis of pop culture through a feminist lens. The hosts bring diverse perspectives to each episode, fostering thoughtful conversations about media representation and societal issues. While some fans miss the previous emphasis on video game content, overall this podcast provides valuable insights into how feminism relates to various forms of media.

A.C. and Kat are back from their first semester at Shiz University for winter break, and we just had to talk about Jon M. Chu's blockbuster Broadway adaptation of Wicked: Part One. Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in the story before the story we all know from The Wizard of Oz, this is a tale that was originally published as a novel by Gregory Maguire in 1995. On its face it's a movie about accepting yourself when you don't fit in, but it's much more so about the way marginalized communities are threatened by authoritarian governments and the complicit neighbors who don't want to "rock the boat." We were impressed by its portrayal of class consciousness and the added nuance brought by casting a Black actress in the role of Elphaba. We dug into Fran Rubel Kuzui's 1992 film Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starring Perry alongside Kristy Swanson and Donald Sutherland.
