Today our text in this week of reflections on how God works through our senses and perceptions comes from 1 Peter 2:1-10. Today also marks “All Saints Day” in the church calendar and lectionary: a day to remember that we belong to a church that spans the ages, standing on the shoulders of the faith of the saints who have gone before us. As the old hymn, “O for a Thousand Tongues” put it, “To God all glory, praise, and love be now and ever given by saints below and saints above, the Church in earth and heaven” May God bless you as you hear his word to the saints—even us—today. Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. As you journey on, go with the blessing of God: Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping, That awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep rest in his peace. May Almighty God bless, preserve, and keep us, this day and forevermore. Amen.

Join Rev. Andy for week 7 of our Songs of Summer series, where we look at hymns/songs of our Christian Faith, their composers and surroundings.
For more than two centuries, the hymn placed first in the Methodist hymnbook was “O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing.” Written by Charles Wesley and originally titled “For the Anniversary Day of One’s Conversion,” the song was composed to commemorate the radical renewal sparked by his faith in Jesus. It has eighteen stanzas proclaiming the glory of God’s goodness to those who repent and follow Christ. Such faith is worth celebrating—and worth sharing. In 2 Timothy 2, Paul encourages Timothy to remain steadfast in his faith and to persevere in sharing it. He noted, “This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal” (vv. 8-9). Rather than second-guess his choices, Paul reminds Timothy to remember the good news message: “Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David” (v. 8), came not to rule but to serve and ultimately to die for the sins of the world so that we may have peace with God. Death didn’t win. Jesus rose from the grave. And just as it set free those who believe, the message itself isn’t bound. “God’s word is not chained,” said Paul (v. 9), not even from places where death seems to have won: prison cells, hospital beds, gravesides. In Jesus, there is hope for all people. That’s news worth celebrating!

This week we look at the conversion anniversary hymn of Charles Wesley. "O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing" is a beautifully poetic look into the heart of a man deeply changed by God's saving grace. My hope is that when we look closely at the words of this song, we will see our own salvation in as beautiful a light as Mr. Wesley remembered his.Link to the song from Indelible Grace Music and other resources Link to the song by Nathan Drake and Reawaken Hymns and other resourcesSupport the show www.thebrightforever.com

Chancel Choir | O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing
Joshua McClure joins Elisabeth and James for a discussion on worship, mentors, and darkest fears…
The evening service for Homecoming Sunday at Brainerd Baptist Church was blessed with extended music both congregational singing and specials. The congregation joined together in singing "O For a Thousand Tongues," His Name is Wonderful," Glory to His Name," and "He Keeps Me Singing." The choir selections were "This is My Story," "Something About That Name," "Jesus, Name I Love," "Blessed Be the Name of the Lord," and "Precious Name of Jesus." A Men's Quartet also sang two selections. Brother McIntyre's message on the voices we hear primarily came from Isaiah. We are born into a world of voices. As a young boy Brother McIntyre remembers the voice of his mother. He then revealed what the "J" in J. Ralph McIntyre stands for. His mother used that name when calling him if he was in trouble. Above all we need to hear the voice of Jesus who tells us He will give us rest, will give us salvation, and tells us to not let our heart be troubled. Homecoming Sunday concluded with the congregation holding hands and singing "Bless Be the Tie That Binds."

Because we are whole people, called to gratitude and called to action, we will encounter forces on our journey that are not life affirming. God stands against such injustice, and so do we because we are a whole people who follow the way of righteousness, the way of Jesus. Recently I was reading the text of “Oh For a Thousand Tongues to Sing” and this line jumped out at me: “He breaks the power of cancelled sin, He makes the prisoner free” . The word “cancelled” has always passed me by unnoticed and, for the first time I saw that statement for what it was actually pointing out: that Christ released us from our sin AND from the obsession with continuous rehashing of forgiven sins. This led me to ponder why we're always trying to prove our fitness to God. Are we trying to add to our redemption? Perhaps display our superiority over His other children? Maybe we don't know why, and yet we all have this desire to construct our obedience and holiness in alignment with what we think looks like virtue. Maybe it means we make lavish promises about our dedication to Him, constructing spiritual to do lists. Maybe it means we sit down to pray and spend the whole time commiserating with God about all the times we've messed up. Maybe it means endlessly scrutinizing our spiritual gifts and their negative counterparts. However it shows up in our lives, the root of it is self centeredness masked as humility. In today's episode, we discuss the simplicity of what we've actually been called to: simple submission to His will in this moment.

So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is a leading city of the district of Macedonia and a Roman colony. We remained in this city some days. And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to the riverside, where we supposed there was a place of prayer, and we sat down and spoke to the women who had come together. One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. Epistle Reading – Revelation 21:9-14, 21-27 Then came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues and spoke to me, saying, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.” And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. . . . And the twelve gates were twelve pearls, each of the gates made of a single pearl, and the street of the city was pure gold, transparent as glass. And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life. The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the sixteenth chapter. [Jesus said:] “In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” Grace Bell Choir – Oh for a Thousand Tongues to Sing (8:00 a.m.)

Thanks for praying and worshiping with me today. As always, our Scripture readings and general order come from the Book of Common Prayer (1979) Daily Office. In the Church calendar, it is Ordinary Time, Proper 25. We'll begin with a sung version of the opening sentences (I was glad when they said to me...). After a prayer of confession, we'll read Psalm 1 followed by the Gloria Patri. Our Gospel reading is Matthew 22:34-46. After the Apostles' Creed, the Lord's Prayer, and the Collect of the Day, we'll sing, "O, for a Thousand Tongues" by Charles Wesley. Then we'll enter a time of guided prayer.
