Rockshow Episode 212 The Pogues special guest Nate PalanNathan “Nate” Palan is a versatile musician, composer, and music enthusiast based in Brooklyn, New York. Originally from southern Wisconsin, he has cultivated a diverse career in the music industry over the past two decades. The Pogues were a Celtic punk band formed in London in 1982, blending traditional Irish folk music with the raw energy of punk rock. The band was founded by Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy, and Jem Finer, and their name is derived from the Irish phrase “póg mo thóin” (meaning “kiss my arse”).Musical Style and ImpactThe Pogues became known for their mix of traditional Irish instruments (like the tin whistle, accordion, and banjo) with punk's rebellious energy. Their lyrics often told gritty, poetic tales of life, love, drinking, and Irish identity.Key Albums & SongsRed Roses for Me (1984) – Their debut album, featuring early classics like “Streams of Whiskey.”Rum Sodomy & the Lash (1985) – Produced by Elvis Costello, this album included “A Pair of Brown Eyes” and “The Old Main Drag.”If I Should Fall from Grace with God (1988) – Their most successful album, featuring “Fairytale of New York” (a Christmas classic featuring Kirsty MacColl) and “Thousands Are Sailing.”Peace and Love (1989) and Hell's Ditch (1990) – Continued their unique sound, with hits like “Misty Morning, Albert Bridge.”Band Turmoil & Lineup ChangesShane MacGowan, the band's charismatic but troubled frontman, was fired in 1991 due to alcohol and drug issues. The band continued with different singers, including Joe Strummer (The Clash), but they disbanded in 1996. They reunited in 2001 and played sporadically until 2014.LegacyThe Pogues influenced countless folk-punk bands, from Dropkick Murphys to Flogging Molly. Their music remains a staple of Irish culture, and “Fairytale of New York” is still one of the most beloved holiday songs.Shane MacGowan's PassingShane MacGowan passed away in November 2023, marking the end of an era. Despite their ups and downs, The Pogues' music continues to inspire and resonate with fans worldwide.#ThePogues #CelticPunk#IrishFolk #FolkPunk#PunkRock #ShaneMacGowan#FairytaleOfNewYork#RumSodomyAndTheLash#CelticMusichttps://www.facebook.com/share/12GhRB4QuoZ/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://www.instagram.com/dark_streets_official?igsh=dXhwNXFkdzIyYnA5https://www.darkstreetsnyc.comhttps://youtu.be/j9jbdgZidu8?si=E2KUw98_dxZ-WA8whttp://www.pogues.com/https://www.instagram.com/thepoguesofficial?igsh=MTR6Z2s2eXRwa2hsNw==https://www.facebook.com/share/1ACvbA4GCX/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://x.com/poguesofficial?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lg

After Ireland, no country was more affected by the Great Famine than the USA. Millions of Irish people emigrated to the United States during and after the Great Famine. This is their story. Through this podcast you will follow them on voyages across the Atlantic before looking at several Irish communities from the Five Points Slum in New York to the Rocky Mountains. From persecuted Irish miners in the Pennsylvanian Coalfields to deeply racist Irish prospectors in the Californian Goldrush the Irish story in America is fascinating and complex... I am very grateful to Martin Nutty, Ryan McCormick, Laura Pasek, Lisa O'Sullivan and Ronan McGreechin for their recordings. CeltiSode 2010!Happy (Belated) St. Patrick's Day, Everyone!!First off, let me please humbly apologize for the HUGE delay that this episode has weathered. Thank you so much for your patience! I truly hope you find the show well worth the wait. :):) Whether you hear this on St. Paddy's itself or tune in during any other time of the year, I hope this day brings nothing but joy to you and yours, and that you enjoy this slightly super-sized episode as much as I do. (And that's after listening to it a million times during its arrangement, so that's saying something! ;D)This show is chock-full of fantastic music, made by some unbelievably skilled & gifted musicians! Some of this is work I've collected over many, many years (through places like myriad renaissance festivals, Thistle & Shamrock shows, and a good few Celtic festivals), while other pieces were acquired more recently; explicitly for play on this show. Celtic music has been a part of my heart for as long as I can remember, and I hope its soulfulness, passion and playfulness always will. :)Finding and playing the best of pod-safe Celtic music for you seems a superb way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day (musically speaking)- but for me, this music can make any day of the year an occasion. Plus, what a gift! I have found more phenomenal music in searching for pieces for this podcast than I can count! What a delight to've found sublime chanteuses like Maria Dunn, Beth Patterson and the ladies of Maidens IV!! And what a blessing to be able to share such personal favorites as The Rogues & Lothlorien, as well as a more recent favorite; the enthralling, enchanting power of Omnia! Each of these pieces hold their own magic and beauty, whether it be sweet & lilting or raucous and irreverent. And don't just relegate this lovely brand of tune-age to St. Paddy's! Celtic music goes beautifully at pubs, renaissance fairs, faerie-themed events, barn dances, and all kinds of events where merry-making is called for- even funerals on occasion- so keep it in mind the next time you go out with family & friends!Whether you're Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Manx or Scots-Irish (like yours truly), if you're English, German, Italian, Asian, Greek, Indian, American, Black Irish or French, may the luck of the Irish always be with you, and may you find your own pot of gold in pleasures big and small on this clover-filled, merrily-jigging day! (Just be careful with the Guinness, Harp Lager & Goldschläger, please! We want you around to celebrate the NEXT St. Paddy's, too! ;D)Now let me pick my fiddle back up again, and have a merry St. Pat's!! (Or whatever day you choose to celebrate it on. ;))Track List1. Dougie Maclean - Caledonia2. Anne Roos - Considine's Grove3. Will Kriski - Kerry's Jig 4. Great Big Sea - Company of Fools 5.
