Rockshow Episode 212 The Pogues special guest Nate PalanNathan “Nate” Palan is a versatile musician, composer, and music enthusiast based in Brooklyn, New York. Originally from southern Wisconsin, he has cultivated a diverse career in the music industry over the past two decades. The Pogues were a Celtic punk band formed in London in 1982, blending traditional Irish folk music with the raw energy of punk rock. The band was founded by Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy, and Jem Finer, and their name is derived from the Irish phrase “póg mo thóin” (meaning “kiss my arse”).Musical Style and ImpactThe Pogues became known for their mix of traditional Irish instruments (like the tin whistle, accordion, and banjo) with punk's rebellious energy. Their lyrics often told gritty, poetic tales of life, love, drinking, and Irish identity.Key Albums & SongsRed Roses for Me (1984) – Their debut album, featuring early classics like “Streams of Whiskey.”Rum Sodomy & the Lash (1985) – Produced by Elvis Costello, this album included “A Pair of Brown Eyes” and “The Old Main Drag.”If I Should Fall from Grace with God (1988) – Their most successful album, featuring “Fairytale of New York” (a Christmas classic featuring Kirsty MacColl) and “Thousands Are Sailing.”Peace and Love (1989) and Hell's Ditch (1990) – Continued their unique sound, with hits like “Misty Morning, Albert Bridge.”Band Turmoil & Lineup ChangesShane MacGowan, the band's charismatic but troubled frontman, was fired in 1991 due to alcohol and drug issues. The band continued with different singers, including Joe Strummer (The Clash), but they disbanded in 1996. They reunited in 2001 and played sporadically until 2014.LegacyThe Pogues influenced countless folk-punk bands, from Dropkick Murphys to Flogging Molly. Their music remains a staple of Irish culture, and “Fairytale of New York” is still one of the most beloved holiday songs.Shane MacGowan's PassingShane MacGowan passed away in November 2023, marking the end of an era. Despite their ups and downs, The Pogues' music continues to inspire and resonate with fans worldwide.#ThePogues #CelticPunk#IrishFolk #FolkPunk#PunkRock #ShaneMacGowan#FairytaleOfNewYork#RumSodomyAndTheLash#CelticMusichttps://www.facebook.com/share/12GhRB4QuoZ/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://www.instagram.com/dark_streets_official?igsh=dXhwNXFkdzIyYnA5https://www.darkstreetsnyc.comhttps://youtu.be/j9jbdgZidu8?si=E2KUw98_dxZ-WA8whttp://www.pogues.com/https://www.instagram.com/thepoguesofficial?igsh=MTR6Z2s2eXRwa2hsNw==https://www.facebook.com/share/1ACvbA4GCX/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://x.com/poguesofficial?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lg

With a string of accolades under her belt including being a BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Finalist, UKE Magazine Breakthrough Artist winner, and participant in the English Folk Expo Mentor Scheme, Amelia's star is on the rise. Her music, often likened to the likes of Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, and Nick Drake, effortlessly blends folk and jazz influences into beguiling original compositions. Join Graham Coath as he uncovers the magic behind Amelia Coburn's unique musical journey, offering listeners an intimate glimpse into the mind of an emerging folk and jazz sensation. Amelia: You know, I think a lot of the times when I'm writing, I'm trying to find idioms and metaphors. And I was writing the song "Seesaw," and I just came across... I thought it was quite a well-known phrase. I just typed in, like, you know, moon phrases, and I came across "Between the Moon and the Milkman," and I was like, I really like that because it can evoke a lot of different things. It can mean physically between that time, but also like that space at nighttime, for me, is quite... I find it really interesting because a lot of the songs were written at nighttime. 0:01 - Introduction by Graham Coath 0:03 - Graham Coath expresses excitement about the upcoming discussion on a fantastic album with guest Amelia Coburn. 0:08 - Introduction of guest Amelia Coburn. 0:20 - Graham Coath introduces the music interlude from Analogue Trash. 0:35 - Analogue Trash music interlude. 1:01 - Graham Coath comments on the energetic nature of the music and its suitability for the podcast's timing. 1:10 - Graham Coath praises Amelia Coburn's album, "Between the Moon and the Milkman," as one of the most important albums in the last five years. 1:21 - Discussion about the origin of the album title and its significance to Amelia Coburn's creative process. 3:01 - Conversation about the challenges of genre classification and pigeonholing in the music industry. 4:07 - Comparison between Amelia Coburn's musical influences and her unexpected similarity to Kirsty MacColl. 5:28 - Discussion about Amelia Coburn's admiration for Neil Hannon and his influence on her songwriting. 6:05 - Conversation about the songwriting process, including the role of dissonance and experimentation with chords. 7:26 - Amelia Coburn's approach to writing lyrics and the importance of melody over lyrics. 9:18 - Discussion on the pronunciation and enunciation of lyrics, influenced by Amelia Coburn's background. 10:42 - Graham Coath highlights Amelia Coburn's ability to blend pop and folk elements in her music. 11:52 - Discussion about the duration of time taken to write and compile the album. 13:45 - Amelia Coburn's experience of working with producer Bill Ryder-Jones and their shared musical influences. 16:21 - Surprise and gratitude expressed by Amelia Coburn regarding the success and positive reception of the album. 17:53 - Mention of Paul Heaton's acknowledgment of the album, indicating potential future opportunities. 18:50 - Discussion about upcoming festival appearances and plans for touring with a band. 19:33 - Graham Coath offers suggestions and support for Amelia Coburn's future musical endeavors.

I look forward to each episode. My wife and play it in the car and at home. This is John McCann, on stage at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle Irish Pub in Pittsburgh, on July 15. John is a regular there, and my family, friends and I always enjoy his shows. John is helping to teach our 11 year old son how to properly clap along to what our late friend, Terry Griffith, described, in jest, as annoying Irish audience participation songs. Our son doesn't have the timing down yet but he is getting better. His favorite is Whiskey in the Jar. Casey Deely joined John on stage for a couple of songs that night. There are plenty more shows to go to before Summer ends, so if you want more photos just let me know. And if you ever find yourself in Pittsburgh, my wife and I will gladly introduce you to our favorite irish pub." Sophie Wildman - Gurung emailed: "Dear Marc, I thought I'd write as I've been listening to your podcast this afternoon as I tie up the first plants in my new garden in Somerset (UK) in holes kindly dug by my magical friend Bangles (Woodland Folk). It was Bangles who first introduced me to your podcast shortly after we first met last November. We met when I was then living in Wells and he was busking 'Troika' by Sergei Prokofiev which was the peice of music I had been looking for, to fit in with 'I believe in Father Christmas' by Greg Lake, that I had been working on. Since then we have been jamming together regularly (mainly folk), often at his spot in the woods, sometimes around the folk nights nearby, with him on his fiddle and me on folk harp (22 strings) and singing. You recently played a recording he'd sent in of some crows so I thought I'd send in one he did of me playing a verse from 'Longlife and Sucess to the Farmer' (quite appropriate for this time of year and my afternoons activities although as an advocate of 'no - dig gardening' I'm not a fan of ploughs,) accompanied by probably the same crows  -  warning us if there are walkers nearby. Maybe with a bit more practise we'll get 'I believed in Father Christmas' together to send you, fingers crossed in time for Christmas! Really enjoying your podcasts, thank you. I've been a fan of Celtic music as long as I can remember. My family is originally from Cornwall which may have something to do with it and obviously lots of music for lever harp (which I've been playing since I was 10) is Celtic. So long may the podcast continue, play on! Kind regards" Woodland Folk sent some pictures and wrote: "Heard bout Ur scifirish on band camp.... inspired... One of the first videos I saw online when I had a skylark(not a violin or fiddle but I respect it greatly for teaching me the tentative mechanics),an Irish man with a fiddle on his knee, looking into the camera said "it's love".... Wisdom many could learn from..." woodland folk sent another photo: "I feel I have been out of the loop, looking forward to making up for this by listening back to a few old faithful episodes (man of the house/2 hour fiddle episode and all...) and a few new ones on a 9 hour coach trip to moffat in Scotland,to see my son who is now a strapping, baritone 17 yrs..... Time is an odd thing.... I tentatively tryed a little Fahey in wells yesterday, though simple with few embellishments....in a way the simplest tunes are the hardest to play,Irish washerwoman or silver spear are deceptive and pretty...... I find Music the grandest analogy for life..."

Jude Rogers – writer, broadcaster, old pal of the pod - first heard Kirsty MacColl when she was nine and felt a connection ever since. She's just written the sleevenotes for ‘See That Girl', the best, most diverse and exquisitely packaged compilation of her music ever assembled, an eight CD box-set of singles, rarities, unheard songs, live and Glastonbury appearances, demos, BBC sessions and collaborations, along with an entire unreleased album. As Jude points out she wasn't overlooked, but all the things you applauded about her made her very hard to market. She wouldn't play the game. She refused to be fashionable. She was funny and honest and wrote about an unvarnished, real world which robbed her of a sense of mystery, and a lot of her songs were about fallibility and failure. Among the highlights here …   … a long-running lyric thread that began with There's a Guy Works Down The Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis.   … why what she wrote about men (and women) was so original. … her strained relationship with her father. … what Johnny Marr admired about her and the power of her “Elysian chorus”. ... why you'll never find another song like ‘Autumnsoupgirl'. … how she and Dave Robinson's hairdresser launched Tracey Ullman's career. … and David Hepworth's inspired idea for ‘In These Shoes?', the West End Kirsty MacColl musical. Order the 8CD box set ‘See That Girl' here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/See-That-Girl-1979-2000-8CD/dp/B0C9GCDZSTTickets for Word In Your Ear live at 21Soho in London on November 27th here: https://www.tickettext.co.uk/ZOthfatjxiSubscribe to Word In Your Ear on Patreon for early - and ad-free! - access to all of our content: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. The South African shot to fame in 2009 after winning the 800 metres at the World Championships in Berlin. Her performance was so astonishing it was met with questions about her sex and gender, with some asking publicly if she was really a woman. Caster's career, for all its highs, has been defined by a battle between her and the sport's governing body World Athletics about her right to compete. Caster joins Emma to discuss her career as she releases her new book A Race to be Myself. Kirsty MacColl wrote and sang some of the most iconic pop songs of the eighties and nineties. She tends to be remembered best for Fairytale of New York, and for her untimely death in 2000. However, as a comprehensive new box set of her work, See That Girl, demonstrates, her influence and importance as an artist extends far beyond this. Music journalist Jude Rogers wrote an essay for the box set, and joins Emma in studio. This morning, we'll have the first King's Speech in more than 70 years. In this morning's speech, the King is expected to include around 20 bills, focusing on criminal sentencing and smoking, among other things. A bill to change the leasehold system is also expected to be included. The BBC's Iain Watson gives us a run through of what to expect and Jo Darbyshire from the National Leasehold Campaign joins Emma to discuss why they want the leasehold system to be scrapped. Even if you don't recognize his name, you should know the music Dave Robinson has brought into the world. As co-founder of Britain's Stiff Records, Robinson signed (and in some cases managed) Elvis Costello (whom he also helped rename), Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Ian Dury, the Damned, the Pogues, Kirsty MacColl, Tracey Ullman and Madness (whose videos he directed). When Island Records bought Stiff and hired Robinson as president, he propelled Frankie Goes to Hollywood and a posthumous Bob Marley into the sales stratosphere. Earlier he had Van Morrison as a flatmate and tour-managed Jimi Hendrix. Now he's managing and has produced the new album from the British band Hardwicke Circus. This Irish force of nature, one of the music industry's great storytellers, will give you Reasons to be Cheerful.

Argentínumenn vona margir að heimsmeistaratitillinn í knattspyrnu efli þjóðinni dáð. Þá var viðhaldið þeirri venju að leika Fairytale of New York í síðasta þætti fyrir jólahátíðina. Þetta lag ensk-írsku hljómsveitarinnar The Pogues og Kirsty MacColl fjallar um brostnar vonir og ást sem snúist hefur upp í andhverfu sína. MacColl og Shane MacGowan fara á kostum í túlkun sinni í laginu sem seint verður kallað hefðbundið jólalag.

It finally happened! When Jon started this podcast seven years ago, at or near the top of his dream guest wishlist was producer Steve Lillywhite, one of his absolute favorites. Steve was so cool and generous with his time that we're releasing this in two parts. In part one we get straight into it discussing Steve's work with Travis, Morrissey, the Killers, Marshall Crenshaw, Big Country, Simple Minds, U2, Peter Gabriel, the Pogues, the Rolling Stones and Johnny Thunders. There are also side conversations on the late, great Kirsty MacColl, the famous gated drum sound Steve had a hand in creating and much more. Stay tuned for part 2 which is equally as good and will be out later this week. It's a dream come true, enjoy! www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
