Chapter 16 - A Journey in the Dark‘The road that I speak of leads to the Mines of Moria,' said Gandalf. Only Gimli lifted up his head; a smouldering fire was in his eyes. On all the others a dread fell at the mention of that name. Even to the hobbits it was a legend of vague fear.Q1 - What do you think of Moria…it seems darker than I expected.Turning to the others he said: ‘While I am searching, will you each make ready to enter the Mines? For here I fear we must say farewell to our good beast of burden. You must lay aside much of the stuff that we brought against bitter weather: you will not need it inside, nor, I hope, when we come through and journey on down into the South. Instead each of us must take a share of what the pony carried, especially the food and the water-skins.' ‘But you can't leave poor old Bill behind in this forsaken place, Mr. Gandalf!' cried Sam, angry and distressed. ‘I won't have it, and that's flat. After he has come so far and all!' ‘I am sorry, Sam,' said the wizard. ‘But when the Door opens I do not think you will be able to drag your Bill inside, into the long dark of Moria. You will have to choose between Bill and your master.' ‘He'd follow Mr. Frodo into a dragon's den, if I led him,' protested Sam. ‘It'd be nothing short of murder to turn him loose with all these wolves about.' ‘It will be short of murder, I hope,' said Gandalf. He laid his hand on the pony's head, and spoke in a low voice. ‘Go with words of guard and guiding on you,' he said. ‘You are a wise beast, and have learned much in Rivendell. Make your ways to places where you can find grass, and so come in time to Elrond's house, or wherever you wish to go. ‘There, Sam! He will have quite as much chance of escaping wolves and getting home as we have.'Q2 - Was there magic in what Gandalf said?Q3 - What do you think of the wolves that came on them?Q4 - What do you think of them getting into Moria?Q5 - I missed it, but did Bill the pony die?Chapter 17 - The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm‘It is grim reading,' he said. ‘I fear their end was cruel. Listen! We cannot get out. We cannot get out. They have taken the Bridge and second hall. Fra´r and Lo´ni and Na´li fell there. Then there are four lines smeared so that I can only read went 5 days ago. The last lines run the pool is up to the wall at Westgate. The Watcher in the Water took O´ in. We cannot get out. The end comes, and then drums, drums in the deep. I wonder what that means. The last thing written is in a trailing scrawl of elf-letters: they are coming. There is nothing more.' Gandalf paused and stood in silent thought.Q1 - This is such a creepy section.Q2 - What do you think of this whole chapters tone? What it was could not be seen: it was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, of man-shape maybe, yet greater; and a power and terror seemed to be in it and to go before it.Q3 - What do you think of the Balrog? The Balrog reached the bridge. Gandalf stood in the middle of the span, leaning on the staff in his left hand, but in his other hand Glamdring gleamed, cold and white. His enemy halted again, facing him, and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings. It raised the whip, and the thongs whined and cracked. Fire came from its nostrils. But Gandalf stood firm. With a bound the Balrog leaped full upon the bridge. Its whip whirled and hissed. ‘He cannot stand alone!' cried Aragorn suddenly and ran back along the bridge. ‘Elendil!' he shouted. ‘I am with you, Gandalf!' ‘Gondor!' cried Boromir and leaped after him.Q4 - I love that Aragorn and Boromir stood to try to fight with Gandalf. With a terrible cry the Balrog fell forward, and its shadow plunged down and vanished. But even as it fell it swung its whip, and the thongs lashed and curled about the wizard's knees, dragging him to the brink. He staggered and fell, grasped vainly at the stone, and slid into the abyss. ‘Fly, you fools!' he cried, and was gone.Q5 - It wasnt Gandalf's choice?Chapter 18 - LothlorianQ1 - What do you think of Lothlorian?Q2 - What do you think about the elves that live their and their laws with dwarves? At the hill's foot Frodo found Aragorn, standing still and silent as a tree; but in his hand was a small golden bloom of elanor, and a light was in his eyes. He was wrapped in some fair memory: and as Frodo looked at him he knew that he beheld things as they once had been in this same place. For the grim years were removed from the face of Aragorn, and he seemed clothed in white, a young lord tall and fair; and he spoke words in the Elvish tongue to one whom Frodo could not see. Arwen vanimelda, nama´rie¨! he said, and then he drew a breath, and returning out of his thought he looked at Frodo and smiled. ‘Here is the heart of Elvendom on earth,' he said, ‘and here my heart dwells ever, unless there be a light beyond the dark roads that we still must tread, you and I. Come with me!' And taking Frodo's hand in his, he left the hill of Cerin Amroth and came there never again as living man.Q3 - What is going on here?

“If Elves indeed still dwell here in this darkening world.” We're back! For a special festive episode where we explore the symbolism of gift giving in Lothlorien. Every member of the Fellowship is given a parting gift by the Lady of the Light. Does she know what will befall them all? What do her gifts symbolise and how do they shape the narrative as the Fellowship cracks at the Falls of Rauros? From Galadriel's gift of the Light of Eärendil, we take a whistle stop tour through the history of Elvendom on Middle Earth. We discuss the Eldar, the people of the stars, those born under the night skies in the First Age of Beleriand. The ones who chose to stay in the dark realm of Middle Earth rather than follow the call to go to the undying lands. It's a beautiful choice. To stay in the land of decay, decomposition and disintegration. And the choice is an astonishing one when you yourself are immortal. We honour the choice to stay and fade with every passing season. We live in a society which would have us turn always towards the light, to distract from the deadening expanse of the landscape. But there is something soul making in our choice to dissolve with the fading light. As soon as we trust in winter, we can trust in the return of the spring. May this Solstice bless you all with the shimmering dark. “May it be a light for you in dark places, where all other lights go out.” If you'd love to geek out with us, reach out to fortheshire.pod@gmail.com or follow us on @fortheshire.pod on Instagram. The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring concludes in such a beautiful way. Sam and Frodo, Merry and Pippin, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, and then of course, the tragedies of Boromir and Gandalf. The 7 who remain of the fellowship must go their separate ways. And while the movie tells us time and time again that Frodo must do this alone, Sam comes with him. J.R.R. Tolkien chose to hinge his works on certain beautiful truths that seem evident in the world around him, and explained the sadness and sorrow, and the goodness and beauty, in ways that no fictional writers have been able to do since. What an absolute beast. It can't be overstated how much good he has done for the world. Peter Jackson tries and largely succeeds in living up to Tolkien's high, high standards in this film. In this Book Nook mini series we dive into the great fantasy series by J.R.R. Tolkien. We are tackling it book by book so each episode will cover half a paperback volume. Journey with us through one of the greatest works of Christian imagination in a century that is all the more relevant today. Part Two covers the second half of The Fellowship of the Ring, from Rivendell to the Breaking of the Fellowship. We follow our heroes through the darkness of the Mines of Moria, the mystical sanctuary of Lothlorien, and the race down the river from the pursuit of the enemy. What does the Ring teach us about temptation? How does evil use deception to achieve its ends? Does victory lie in using the Ring and taking power into our own hands? Join the journey with us!
Galadriel tells the Company that she cannot see Gandalf from afar unless he is within the borders of Lothlorien. This is an implied limitation on a much more astonishing ability which is never explored in detail, but maybe we can tease out a few things from the text on what exactly Galadriel can and can't see, and how and why as well. Exploration is the shortest of the three legs of RPGs and doesn't get the love that combat or social encounters do at most tables. However, with a little planning, and learning how to run a hexcrawl or prepare some mysteries and histories, exploration can be a lot of fun for your entire table. Ten withered outstretched fingersreaching into the darknesspalms searching for the pull of the Ring.He waits in the darkrelentlessly holding on.I lift my soft, sensitive, loving skinto meet the ragged worn surfaceof his hopeless hands. At first he doesn't notice the changingforce of palm to palm.I wrap my fingersaround the gnarled mountainsof his knuckles. Cling to himand the parts of methat I have also cast adrift. Meet us on the slopes of the Misty Mountains, get carried away in the slipstream and into the current of Dream. We didn't know where this episode would take us. But of course, we ended up in the liminal. The eagle flying between the solar light of consciousness and the first sliver of the young moon. The hairs on the back of necks rising in the space between the lifting fog and the starless sky. The hesitation between being repulsed and reaching out in awe. We explore two dreams, one of Frodo's and one of a listener's. We look for what is at threat of being lost. Where we can listen to inner guidance to point us to what we already know. How we can let our fingertips plunge ever deeper into the fertile soil of the Dreamworld. You can listen to the Dream Nidra from Lothlorien here. Welcome to this dream incubation Nidra. If you are new to Dreamwork, setting the intention to dream is important. In Yoga Nidra, this intention is called a Sankalpa. Asking for a dream is an invitation to your unconscious to guide you deeper and deeper in. Do whatever you love to do to make yourself comfortable, ready for sleep. Have a notebook by your bed so you can pour your dream language into it when you awake. I prefer to voice record my dreams, so have my phone nearby as well. This Nidra invites a Middle Earthern dream but you may end up elsewhere. Trust that your unconscious will guide you to whatever it longs to show you. We rewind way back to before the band started and hear how some of the founding members first met one another. We learn how Sunburned's precursor band – Shit Spangled Banner – formed, released a tape, and broke up. Thurston Moore provides narrative exposition about the wider music scene that partially informed Sunburned's formation. We get a third-eye tour of the band's incubator – an illegal loft space in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston. Finally, we hear about several early band members and how all their eccentricities ultimately drove the band's jamming. Here's an amazing and extremely early glimpse of Sunburned playing live in late 1997. You can see many of the musicians described in this episode! Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Ned's choice of topic: Ralph Bakshi's animated film adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. A heavily promoted effort at the time due it being both the first ever version of Tolkien's work done for film as well as due to Bakshi's notable reputation as the most well known American animator since Walt Disney and Chuck Jones, the 1978 movie was a reasonable success but not a smash, and the fact that it was only the first half of a planned two-film sequence – but not marketed as such – led to confused audiences and an upset Tolkien reader fanbase. At once a surprisingly faithful if still heavily redacted version of the book and a very unusual mix of animation styles that grew out of Bakshi's earlier movies, the film has retained a cult following since, and the resulting contrast with the later Peter Jackson movies has proven illuminating to both. What makes the sequences like the Flight to the Ford both compelling viewing and something of a slog? Which voice actors bring a notable depth to their characters along with the script and animation efforts – and which ones end up undercutting their characters completely? How does the shifting between particular animation styles, even within scenes, both act as intriguing experiment aiming to solve particular problems and yet also a confusing mess? And what is up with that incredibly generic musical score?SHOW NOTES.Jared's doodle. Jackson riffed on this scene for a reason. And Jared did bake a cake for Megaphonic's Kitchen Party! Not a GOOD moment…The Shadow of the Past sequence, with the quick cuts of the seasons, Gandalf being crabby and stagy, Frodo's agape reaction to the Ring being tossed into the fire and so forth.Gandalf meets Saruman – or Aruman, depending on the line. Orthanc's design and Saruman's MANY COLORS! included. The hobbits first encounter the Nazgul, and it's a truly creepy moment.Ah yes the Balrog. We agree with the title of this clip.Aside from the opening credits, the prologue sequence is really impressive as we note. But yeah that one Elves bit.Our episode on Peter Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring. And our orc episode.Gollum being Gollum. And almost being redeemed towards the end of this clip. (Per Jared's comparison, here's Quentin Crisp on Letterman.)Grima petting Theoden. Can't put it any plainer.Sam, Sam, Sam. Where to begin? So many examples. And then there's that ‘moment.'Aragorn takes a tumble. Helm's Deep here is not exactly Jackson's.That's one big skull in Moria. Meantime, is Rivendell a lamasery? If you REALLY want to hear the soundtrack… But yes, just listen to Rosenman's Star Trek IV soundtrack instead as Jared suggests. The heroic ending! Sorta. Maybe. If you squint.Support By-The-Bywater and Megaphonic FM on Patreon!

We conclude our discussion about the first of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films by "Tolkien" about the differences between Rivendell and Lothlorien elves and other non-essential issues. We've run out of breakfast items, but thankfully there's plenty of lembas bread to sustain us on our quest to make our podcast longer than he actual film. Many apologies, "normal" service will be resumed next month...

In this second installment of the Wade Center Podcast's six-part series on The Lord of the Rings," Drs. Crystal and David C. Downing, along with Producer Aaron M. Hill, dare to delve too deep into the darkening world that is Book II. Follow along as Crystal, Aaron, and David deem the doom of Sauron's ring and discuss the themes, character development, and consequential chapters of the latter half of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy, The Fellowship of the Ring.
This is a recording of the fourth lecture in a five-part series on Tolkien. In this episode we discuss Tolkien's knowledge of Sacred Geometry, the crisis posed by Scholasticism, the treachery of images (with a nod to Magritte), and how our tendency to think in duality has the propensity to lead us into deception - even deceiving ourselves. There exists (even in Tolkien's mind) a bit of confusion about which towers the title of the work is referencing. In a letter to Rayner Unwin (the publisher) from Aug 17, 1953 (Letters #140), Tolkien wrote: "The Two Towers" gets as near as possible to finding a title to cover the widely divergent Books 3 and 4; and can be left ambiguous - it might refer to Isengard and Barad-dûr, or to Minas Tirith and Barad-dur; or Isengard and Cirith Ungol." I opt for the relationship between Minas Tirith and Minas Morgul (Barad-dur). Nota Bene: The poet and aesthetic philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge introduced the term "suspension of disbelief" in 1817 and suggested that if a writer could infuse a "human interest and a semblance of truth" into a fantastic tale, the reader would suspend judgement concerning the implausibility of the narrative. Also, Plato uses the term "Thaumatapoioi" (wondrous creations, "shadow puppets") in his great dialogue, "The Republic". Tolkien's image of the Ring has much in common with Plato's Thaumatapoioi and with the Ring of Gyges which makes one invisible. For Plato, as for Tolkien, the images must lead us to see the really real, the Good, Illuvatar - but taken in themselves they are like Lothlorien in their beauty but must be allowed to fade away. Lastly, wrt names in the novel - this from Behind the Name: Frodo: Derived from Old English froda meaning "wise". Samwise Gamgee: Means "simple, half wise" from Old English sam "half" and wis "wise". Meriadoc (Merry): From an old Breton name composed of the elements mer "sea" and iatoc "forehead". Conan Meriadeg was the legendary founder of Brittany. Peregrine (Pippin): From the Late Latin name Peregrinus, which meant "traveller". (Frankish name of unknown meaning. It possibly means "awe-inspiring" from Frankish bib- "to tremble". This was the name of three majordomos of Austrasia including Pépin III the Short, who became the first Carolingian king of the Franks. He was the father of Charlemagne.)
It's Maia vs. Maia in a steel cage death match: Gandalf vs. the Balrog, fire vs. flame, small elderly guy vs. giant devil guy. Results ensue! Then the gang escapes to Lothlorien, where Gimil tells the elves he wants to poop on them. Yep.
In this episode Andrew and Don discuss the mysterious micro warband. Join them as they build a micro warband army using the Isengard faction, the best in the business. In the All that is Gold Does not Glitter segment, the guys answer a listener question about their favorite un-competitive lists and how to improve the Lothlorien faction. Last but not least, Andrew steps up to the plate with the longest segment yet for our narrative short story.
The end of the Lord of the Rings is very different in the novel than in the movie trilogy. In this video I give a synopsis of what Peter Jackson left out and discuss some of the themes present in the original story.
