The Music That Made WE volume 5 continues with our first collaboration; this one with Rex Halligan of #ShirtlessHistory to discuss Irish history (1740 to 1920s) as best can be abbreviated with the format. Rex is a sexy historian based in New York, where he also co-produces Fire and Fury Burlesque. He began his Shirtless History series informally (and still only whenever the mood strikes) during the pandemic, covering topics often (but not limited to!) on the topic of emerald isle. We get a crash course in a friendly, concise way, and with tunes that represent the pride and tumultuous times leading just before the Troubles (come back next year for that one; it'll be a doozy). This soundtrack includes mainstays of Irish popular music like Flogging Molly, Wolfe Tones, and Sinead O'Connor plus some deeper cuts and takes on traditional melodies. + Stick around for Viktor's hidden bonus track. Rockshow Episode 212 The Pogues special guest Nate PalanNathan “Nate” Palan is a versatile musician, composer, and music enthusiast based in Brooklyn, New York. Originally from southern Wisconsin, he has cultivated a diverse career in the music industry over the past two decades. The Pogues were a Celtic punk band formed in London in 1982, blending traditional Irish folk music with the raw energy of punk rock. The band was founded by Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy, and Jem Finer, and their name is derived from the Irish phrase “póg mo thóin” (meaning “kiss my arse”).Musical Style and ImpactThe Pogues became known for their mix of traditional Irish instruments (like the tin whistle, accordion, and banjo) with punk's rebellious energy. Their lyrics often told gritty, poetic tales of life, love, drinking, and Irish identity.Key Albums & SongsRed Roses for Me (1984) – Their debut album, featuring early classics like “Streams of Whiskey.”Rum Sodomy & the Lash (1985) – Produced by Elvis Costello, this album included “A Pair of Brown Eyes” and “The Old Main Drag.”If I Should Fall from Grace with God (1988) – Their most successful album, featuring “Fairytale of New York” (a Christmas classic featuring Kirsty MacColl) and “Thousands Are Sailing.”Peace and Love (1989) and Hell's Ditch (1990) – Continued their unique sound, with hits like “Misty Morning, Albert Bridge.”Band Turmoil & Lineup ChangesShane MacGowan, the band's charismatic but troubled frontman, was fired in 1991 due to alcohol and drug issues. The band continued with different singers, including Joe Strummer (The Clash), but they disbanded in 1996. They reunited in 2001 and played sporadically until 2014.LegacyThe Pogues influenced countless folk-punk bands, from Dropkick Murphys to Flogging Molly. Their music remains a staple of Irish culture, and “Fairytale of New York” is still one of the most beloved holiday songs.Shane MacGowan's PassingShane MacGowan passed away in November 2023, marking the end of an era. Despite their ups and downs, The Pogues' music continues to inspire and resonate with fans worldwide.#ThePogues #CelticPunk#IrishFolk #FolkPunk#PunkRock #ShaneMacGowan#FairytaleOfNewYork#RumSodomyAndTheLash#CelticMusichttps://www.facebook.com/share/12GhRB4QuoZ/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://www.instagram.com/dark_streets_official?igsh=dXhwNXFkdzIyYnA5https://www.darkstreetsnyc.comhttps://youtu.be/j9jbdgZidu8?si=E2KUw98_dxZ-WA8whttp://www.pogues.com/https://www.instagram.com/thepoguesofficial?igsh=MTR6Z2s2eXRwa2hsNw==https://www.facebook.com/share/1ACvbA4GCX/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://x.com/poguesofficial?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lg

About Leah Martin-BrownEven before picking up her first guitar at age 11, Leah Martin-Brown knew she was destined to become a musician.Born in Brisbane, Queensland and raised in the beautiful beach town Burleigh Heads, Leah would play anywhere there was a stage- oftentimes begging family friends who owned bars and restaurants to let her set up and play a few tunes. By the time she was 16, Leah was writing, recording and performing her original music all over the Gold Coast and surrounding areas- regularly being booked for locally run festivals, youth events and the occasional nightclub with her newly named project 'Lilly Rouge'.Leah finished high school and was accepted into the 'Bachelor of Popular Music' program at Griffith University which she graduated from in 2011. Still knowing that she desperately wanted to continue writing and performing music but not quite sure how to support herself doing so, Leah moved down to Melbourne in Victoria and began working on a Master of Music Education at Melbourne University. While she did not fall in love with teaching, she found new life within the vibrant Melbourne music scene, inspiring her to immediately change her hair colour to her signature red and, also, to defer her Degree and begin fully focusing on her band- 'Lilly Rouge'.September 2012 saw Leah return to her home state of Queensland to begin writing and recording with Brisbane based Producer, Stuart Stuart (The Veronica's, Sheppard). The two co-wrote over 30 tracks, most of which were released on 'Lilly Rouge" records. This set Leah and her band up for two Australian National tours, support slots for 'Everclear', 'Presidents of the United States' and 'The Getaway Plan' and a set at 2013's 'Big Day Out' Festival. This caught the eyes and ears of Los Angeles, CA based A&R Company- A&R Worldwide. They invited Leah to California to work on some new music with Producer, Brian Howes (Airbourne, Skillet, Hinder, Nickelback) and showcase at music industry event 'Musexpo'. It was at this point that Leah disbanded Lilly Rouge and created 'Evol Walks'.Leah spent the next 5 years extensively playing shows in her new home of Los Angeles, CA as well as touring through Australia, West Coast USA and parts of Europe, releasing 2 EPs and several singles with the band.In 2020, Leah relocated to Stockholm, Sweden where, as well as writing and recording new music, she was given the opportunity to work and record an album with legendary Producer & Songwriter Robert ‘Mutt' Lange and acclaimed songwriter & producer Tony Nilsson. In 2024, Leah Martin-Brown spends the bulk of her time in Los Angeles, CA but is consistently travelling the world writing, recording and playing wherever she can.She has shared the stage with Dreamtheatre, Flogging Molly, Nita Strauss, Glen Sobel, Johnny Depp and Joe Perry and many more.

Listening Lyrics had a great conversation with Rick Meagher (pictured)! The blend of traditional Irish sounds and personal expression that he brings to his music with One Eyed Reilly is special. It's always exciting to hear from someone so passionate about their craft, especially in a genre as rich and storied as Irish music. Rick shared some insights into the band's approach to Irish folk in his original compositions. One Eyed Reilly blends well-crafted original songs with modern Celtic rock, Americana, and wildly energetic, occasionally over-caffeinated versions of traditional Irish classics but even more so the original songs this band generates. Live performances are a whirlwind of Irish-themed originals, with a cheeky sprinkle of covers by Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, and even the odd bit of Bob Dylan or the Grateful Dead—because why not throw some rootsy rock in with your pint of Guinness? It's like an Irish pub jam session with a rock 'n' roll attitude—just with more fiddles and less actual eye-patches than you'd expect!
If you don't know who Me First & The Gimmes are by now, then you either have little taste in music and/or a sense of adventure, or you don't listen to music at all.If you have been figuratively touched by these fun loving punk reprobates then you will already know that the band only recently visited these shores on a blitzkrieg tour, and you will also likely not be surprised to hear that everybody's favourite punk covers band are about to board the plane from the U.S of A for a return visit dubbed The Band Of The Long Weekend Tour.Except it goes for more like two weeks.Armed with their latest release - a tribute to the late Billy Thorpe with Most People I Know - Me First & The Gimmes are set to once more decimate Australian crowds, and, according to frontman Spike Slawson, can't wait to experience our good old Australian hospitality once more. With less than seven days to the first Brisbane show on October 30, we start by asking if he is packed and ready to go."Getting there," he smiled. "I always leave it to the last minute, but we're getting there. Preparing ourselves mentally and emotionally and infrastructurally it's always a challenge, but somehow we always make do. And the flight keeps getting shorter and shorter! I think they hit some kind of slipstream or… I dunno."Talk turns to the name of the tour and the fact that Me First & The Gimmes are anything but predictable, both as people and in the sonic realm."We like to put our fans and facilitators at a disadvantage," he joked. "I think it's… it's not a strategic thing as much as it is just a sort of troll. Our shows are an hour and a half long troll and at first we try to set the bar high for ourselves by really alienating our potential allies until the point where they are actually expressing their displeasure audibly. Booing. We like to bring them to about that point before we start to reel them back in. When it really kicked in was recently - two or three years ago - and it was still during lockdown so it was a crazy tour, but we were on a bill with the Violent Femmes and Flogging Molly as well as a band from New York called Thick. All the other bands played originals, or at least mostly originals, so, as with most bands that play originals, they are the heroes of their own stories. They're very earnest, and they're very serious about their music. They may be smiling but it's a serious moment they're sharing with you. Whereas for us, we understood right off the bat that we were the heels of the bill. Just as we are the heels of any bill that we're on. Interestingly enough, the nights when you alienate the crowd the most, those are the nights where you end up selling the most t-shirts. Isn't that funny?"In the full interview, Spike reminisced about their previous performances in Australia and their upcoming return. He expressed his love for classical pop music and punk music, particularly the Ramones and the Buzzcocks, revealing that his band's covers would likely come from outsider pop or weirdo pop, which was prevalent in the 1970s. He also discussed his admiration for the music of the 1970s, despite its sometimes jarring themes. We spoke about support band, Dwarves, and how this coming tour will differ from recent shows, places where Me First & The Gimme Gimmes WOULDN'T play and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Inspired by early punk and new wave, Adam Greenspan's journey through the vast soundscapes of the late 80s, to industrial and alt 90s, marked a lifelong immersion in music. With over 25 years in the industry, his career ignited with the engineering of Faith No More's "Album of the Year." Later, a serendipitous connection with fellow producer Nick Launay led to fruitful collaborations, shaping albums for luminaries such as Arcade Fire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Supergrass, The Cribs, and Refused. Greenspan's recent productions have garnered critical acclaim, notably securing a 2019 Mercury Prize shortlist for IDLES' "Joy as an Act of Resistance" and a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album with Thomas Dybdal's "All These Things." His return to IDLES resulted in a UK #1 album with "Ultra Mono," highlighting his enduring impact on contemporary music. Continuing to shape sonic landscapes, Greenspan's recent projects include works with Bloc Party and Flogging Molly. His approach is characterized by close collaboration with artists, aiming to distill a sound and style uniquely theirs while encouraging them to explore new territories. Emphasizing the visceral impact of music and its ability to evoke emotion and movement, Greenspan rejects formulas in favor of capturing genuine artistic expression. Transcript: bit.ly/AIAe054-1VOLORES' debut album, AGES, explores universal themes of life, love, and death through dark indie rock, stylish post-punk motifs, and disarmingly frank lyricism. The Colorado-based couple – Flogging Molly bassist Nathen Maxwell and his singer-songwriter wife Shelby – lightheartedly dub their singular sound “mountain goth.”Organic, haunting, and relentlessly authentic, VOLORES' broad appeal lies in its raw channeling of the mortal condition, including mental health struggles, that they've not only experienced, but experienced together. Simple, yet effortlessly beautiful, AGES celebrates the shared musical passions that brought the Maxwells together – from Leonard Cohen and Elliot Smith to The Cure and Interpol – through unfiltered expressions that cast deeply personal shadows in plain sight, coated only in intuitive melody and elegant songcraft.VOLORES (voloresband.com)

In this festive episode of the Punks in Pubs Podcast, host Liam Bird takes a nostalgic trip back to 2018, revisiting Episode 29 with special guest Dave King, the mastermind behind Flogging Molly. As the holiday spirit fills the air, Liam and Dave unwrap stories about Punk Rock, reminisce about Dave's musical hero Ronnie Drew of The Dubliners, and delve into Dave's unexpected journey from Ireland to L.A., where he found himself facing the challenges of being an illegal immigrant.Amidst the laughter and anecdotes, the episode takes a poignant turn as Dave shares a heartbreaking story about the eight years he spent in America, unable to see his mother. Of course, it wouldn't be a Punks in Pubs episode without diving deep into the world of Flogging Molly. The duo talks about the band's iconic Salty Dog Cruise. Because no conversation is complete without a bit of controversy, they even touch on some political topics. So, grab a seat, crack open a cold one, and join Liam and Dave for this festive journey filled with punk tales, Christmas cheer, and a touch of heartwarming nostalgia. Thirty years ago, I popped in If I Should Fall From Grace with God by the London-Irish punk band the Pogues, and my life changed forever. I was 17, socially awkward, and a bit of a loner, but discovering the Pogues opened a whole world for me. Finding their brand of traditional Irish music blended with punk rock was like discovering a new home—comfortable yet dangerous, familiar yet mysterious. So it is such a tremendous honor to welcome Pogues founding member and accordion player James Fearnley to For Songs. James, hailing from outside Manchester, England, joined the band at the beginning, enlisted because if he could play the piano, surely he could play the accordion. I spoke with James via Zoom from his L.A. home. We tackle a few obligatory Pogues questions but spend most of our time discussing James' latest venture, The Walker Roaders (https://walkerroaders.com/). The Walker Roaders, which released their first record in August 2019, are a Celtic punk supergroup, featuring not only James from the Pogues, but Ted Hutt from Flogging Molly and Marc Orrell from the Dropkick Murphys. We talk about the band's songwriting prowess, lessons James has picked up from being around amazing artists like Shane MacGowan, Jem Finer, Joe Strummer, among others. Yeah, you're gonna wanna listen to this one. So sit back, grab a pint (or two) and welcome James Fearnley to For Songs.

Accordion Noir Radio - Ruthlessly pursuing the belief that the accordion is just another instrument.

This week we present another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This band is a true treasure from the Great White North that plays mean power chords and punch-you-in-the-mouth rock n' roll! The lead singer and guitarist is a swaggering rock n' roll force to be reckoned with… Twenty-Seven years into their career at this point, but most Americans don't know him or his amazing band. That is a travesty. Guess who's back??? Say his name and say it loud like it's a hit song… DANKO JONES!!!This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. We are starting with Part 2 of a 2-part episode because Kevin just wanted to do so… It's his show and he's an idiot, so let him have it.
