In this episode, I sit down with Grammy winning producer and engineer Kevin Killen. We first interviewed Kevin in episodes 46 and 47, where he talks about his career in recording studios from Dublin to NYC, and working with Peter Gabriel, Kate bush, U2, Elvis Costello, and a host of others. If you haven't already, go check ‘em out. Since then, Kevin has moved to his personal studio, and is teaching as an adjunct professor at the NYU Clive Davis Institute and Steinhardt School. He's also been busy working with the likes of Tony Levin and Cara Dillon, and recording drum sample packs for Toontrack at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios. Listen in as he catches us up on all of it.

And the multi-award-winning folk musician Cara Dillon shares how her love of home and how telling stories through music has helped her connect to family members she never even met. All that, plus the Inheritance Tracks of musician, comedian and the lyricist who brought us Matilda the Musical – Tim Minchin. Presenters: Huw Stephens and Kiri Pritchard-McLean

Two adaptations of Rhinoceros by Eugène Ionesco open this month, one in Belfast and a Welsh language adaptation in Cardiff. The adaptors Patrick J O'Reilly and Manon Steffan Ros both join Kathy Clugston to discuss how this 1950s play about the rise of Fascism speaks to audiences now. Singer Cara Dillon is known globally for her interpretations of traditional Irish songs. As she performs at the Belfast International Arts Festival, she explains why she's taking a new direction with her upcoming album, the first time she's released an album of original songs. In the first of Front Row's interviews with the authors shortlisted for this year's Booker Prize, Paul Lynch talks about Prophet Song, his dystopian novel which imagines a future in which Ireland is in the grips of an oppressive regime. And as Glasgow Museums say that they are unable to locate a sculpture by the French artist Auguste Rodin, arts correspondent Jan Patience explains that it may not be the only major work of art that's gone missing. On Monday 25th May – Spring Bank Holiday in the UK – we staged the Folk on Foot Front Room Festival 2 with an astonishing line up of artists. The show lasted for eight hours – but we have distilled it down to two hours of highlights, featuring: Cara Dillon and Sam Lakeman, Chris Wood, Duncan Chisholm, Eliza Carthy, Frank Turner and Jess Guise, Gwilym Bowen Rhys, John Smith, Johnny Flynn, Kate Rusby and Damien O’Kane, Kathryn Tickell, Kitty Macfarlane, O’Hooley and Tidow, Richard Thompson and Zara Phillips, Rioghnach Connolly and Ellis Davies – all playing from their front rooms (and gardens). Plus the online premiere of a behind the scenes film of the Unthanks on their recent “unaccompanied” tour. It was a remarkable and emotional day which raised loads of money for musicians who can’t work during the lockdown – enjoy!

My Top Irish & Celtic Music Playlist is newly updated on Spotify. For the past couple months, I've accidentally published episodes with explicit language. As soon as I recognized my error, I fixed the files on our host server. Unfortunately, many platforms host files on their own servers instead of Libsyn's. This inspired a change in how I release shows. In the future, Apple Podcasts will be the only clean podcast. Explicit language may show up on Spotify or Stitcher or other podcatchers that don't pull the file directly from Libsyn each time. But if you listen on Apple Pocasts or even our free app, they will be clean if I catch it soon enough. Second, some folks have asked why many older shows don't appear in the app. Apple Podcasts only allows the most-recent 300 episodes to appear. So again, if you want better access to all of the shows, go get our free app on iTunes or Amazon. Finally, I've been advertising on Facebook for a few years now to promote the podcast and attract new folks. I would love your help in doing more. I recently asked The Selkie Girls to record one for the Women of Irish & Celtic Music. It was a huge success. I'd love to get some testimonials from you that can be turned into 30 second ads. You can join us with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts and videos. 2019 is the Celtic Invasion of Star Wars. 2020 is the Origins of Celtic Invasions. You can find out more about these two exciting trips. Join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! I don’t know about you. But I am not a fan of corporate influence. Certainly not in politics, but also not in the music I create and share. That’s one of the reasons that the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast supports independent Celtic musicians. I want to help the artists who don’t have a record label or a giant production company behind them. They are doing everything themselves. Just like we are. Your support of this podcast helps with that mission. This show is listener supported. Instead of trying to find advertisers, I've decided to let your generosity fund the creation, production, and promotion of the show. You'll get episodes before regular listeners, discounts on merch, and when we hit a milestone, you get extra special episodes, including a bonus episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast that will come out next month. I want to thank our newest patrons of the podcast: Howard M., Bob H., Martin K., Glenn N., Jay M., Robert L., Maggie H., Mike C., John D., Stefan J., Kylie D.. Thanks also to Mary M. who raised her pledge. And finally, I want to give a huge thanks to Marianne Ludwig. She is one of the all new Celtic Legends. This tier is newly updated. Celtic Legends pledge a minimum of $25 per month. You see, when you pledge on Patreon, you can pledge per episode, but you can also set a maximum amount you're willing to donate to the podcast per month. If you're a Song Henger, you can pledge $5 per episode and limit it to four episodes (5 is the rare maximum I ever release in a month). But you can also limit it to one or two episodes and pay just $5 or $10 per month. As a Celtic Legend, you can pledge $25 per episode and then limit your maximum amount per month to $25. At the beginning of every month, I will read your name and all of our Celtic Legends to the community in thanks. You can become a generous Patron of the Podcast at http://patreon.com/celticpodcast I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? You can send a written comment along with a picture of what you're doing while listening. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Donald Willms emailed: Hi Mark, I found myself laying under the prairie stars with your voice and tunes tickling my ears. My sister and I pulled into the Indian Head Campground after dark while driving through Saskatchewan. I was about to pull out my tent but couldn’t bring myself to put a nylon veil between my eyelids and the endless heavens. If only the wee eye in my phone could capture the enormous beauty before me as the crescent moon rises and comet dust blazes fiery streaks above. Cheers! These words may have to suffice…" Charles Morley in Alabama replied to the Celtic Music Magazine email: "Really appreciate your site and messages, Marc. You do a great service to the ITM community. Don't have much of a chance to listen regularly but you present the best of a wide-ranging genre of music that would otherwise be impossible to track down and experience. News of new music (CDs etc.) is priceless, especially for the American audience. Keep up the good work!" Mike O'Byrne emailed: "Hi Marc, I thought about the podcast this Saturday as I was making a static line parachute jump with the Phantom Airborne Brigade, a group of former and current military parachutists who get together every month at Zephyrhills, Florida. Nothing like having some good music as you float down under that big round chute. I’m still replaying your Memorial Day Special, one of your best IMHO. If you know of any other Celtic music-loving former military airborne folks, send them our way. Age is no limitation. I am 74." Ross McMath emailed: "Hello, I listen to the podcast every day at work. In moments when a great reel or tune is being played it provides my whole being with joy. I copy all my favourite songs to be added to a few playlists I have going on Spotify (Celtic and Soft Celtic) - there are over 160 songs on the playlist already with more in line to be added. Thank you so much for all your efforts in finding and producing all this amazing music for an under-listened to but fantastic genre. Kind regards, Ross"
The multi award winning singer Cara Dillon comes from the small town of Dungiven in Northern Ireland. It is a place steeped in myth and legend with a powerful musical tradition. As Cara and her husband and musical collaborator Sam Lakeman take Matthew on a walk through the countryside around the town, she tells stories of a lost princess and a powerful chieftain and his tiny but tough Scottish bodyguards. She also introduces Matthew to the local well which is reputed to be able to cure warts. Standing on an iron bridge over the River Roe, Cara sings “The Winding River Roe” with the water rippling by in the background. Then they climb the local mountain known as “The Hill of Thieves” which is also the inspiration for one of Cara’s songs. As the rain begins to fall, they take refuge in a local sibin where Cara and Sam perform “The Leaving Song” about the living wakes held by families before their children emigrated to the United States.
Macbeth is on at the National Theatre, The Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Opera House, and there will be at least 15 more Macbeths at theatres and festivals around the country this year. Rufus Norris, director of the National's production, and Kit Monkman, who has made the latest film version, discuss why Shakespeare's play has such urgent appeal today. The British Council has been in the news because Moscow has shut down its activities in Russia. But what does the Council actually do? Alastair Niven, who was for four years Director of Literature at the British Council, explains its work, significance and why it sometimes falls foul of certain regimes. As music superstar partners Beyoncé and Jay-Z announce details of their new joint tour, Front Row decided to examine the delights and drawbacks when artists, who are couples, hit the road together. John talks to comedian Francesca Martinez and her touring partner actor Kevin Hely, and married musical duo Cara Dillon and Sam Lakeman.

TODAY'S SHOW IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY... THE CELTIC INVASION OF THE ISLE OF SKYE I'm going to Scotland in 2018, and I want you to join me. We will experience the Isle of Skye, where the Bonnie Prince Charlie fled with the aid of Flora MacDonald after the defeat of the Jacobite Rising of 1745. The Isle of Skye is the largest and northernmost of the major islands in the Inner Hebrides. Some call it one of the most-beautiful islands in the world. Subscribe to the mailing list to join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ NOTES * Helping you celebrate Celtic culture through music. My name is Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic and Geek musician and podcaster. This podcast is dedicated to the indie Celtic musicians. I want to ask you to support these artists. Share the show with your friends. And find more episodes at celticmusicpodcast.com. You can also support this podcast on Patreon. Special thanks to our newest Patrons of the Podcast: Sean Mac Aodha, Kas, and our new Celtic Superstar, Hunter Melville. Years ago, a traditional Irish musician sat me down and told this autoharp-playing Renaissance festival musician what Celtic music really was. He gave me a list of popular trad musicians I should listen to. And I found some awesome bands in his list. That meeting was an important moment in my life. Because I did not see Celtic music the way he did. His definition narrowly defined traditional Irish music. For me, Celtic music is vast and growing. It encompasses the traditional songs and tunes as well as the contemporary arrangements that are more accessible to the average listener, like Celtic rock and even Celtic New Age. So when I started the Celtic Music Magazine and later the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. One of my goals was to share my definition of Celtic music as well as to help independent Celtic musicians. So this week I'm gonna share songs and tunes that I think will be a great intro to someone getting started with Celtic music. I picked some of my favorite bands and tunes. I got a little of input as well from my Patrons of the Podcast. Without my Patrons support this show would not have happened. This is in fact the first of two 2-hour shows that you get because we hit a big milestone on Patreon. Head on over to Patreon.com/celticpodcast if you want to show your support and get more two-hour specials. Let's get on with the music! CELTIC PODCAST NEWS VOTE IN THE CELTIC TOP 20. Singer-songwriter RJ Thompson released his highly anticipated fifth EP last month. The musician who hails from Newcastle has been writing and performing for over ten years, but has only just achieved one of his childhood dreams - to perform at the Royal Albert Hall. RJ is currently on tour with the legendary Jools Holland and is delighted to be supporting him on five of his UK dates, including shows at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, Manchester’s O2 Apollo, Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena, and London’s Royal Albert Hall. The tour also coincides with RJ’s new EP release and he is looking forward to playing his new material to a live audience. House Upon The Hill features five tracks including No Man’s Land, Numbers, Born Alone, Cannery Row and title track House Upon The Hill, and was produced by Adam Sinclair and recorded in Blast Recording Studios and Loft Music Studios in Newcastle. The EP has been a project in the making as it has taken RJ a good year or so to complete it. House Upon The Hill reflects RJ’s different musical styles as he fuses folk, jazz and contemporary pop to create a mixture of soulful and catchy hits. Prior to its release, RJ released the quirky, fun Numbers in May and the more minimalist and starkly honest title track House Upon The Hill at the beginning of November, which were both well received. The talented multi-instrumentalist has toured with the likes of Gabriella Cilmi, Sandi Thom, The Proclaimers, John Mayall, Midge Ure (UK & German tours), Ultravox, Deacon Blue, John Martyn, Joe Brooks, David Ford, and Cara Dillon, although RJ has no plans for touring in 2015 yet. To keep up to date with RJ go to www.rjthompsonmusic.com or www.facebook.com/rjthompsonmusic House Upon The Hill is available to download from iTunes, Google Play and Amazon MP3.

CeltiSode 2010!Happy (Belated) St. Patrick's Day, Everyone!!First off, let me please humbly apologize for the HUGE delay that this episode has weathered. Thank you so much for your patience! I truly hope you find the show well worth the wait. :):) Whether you hear this on St. Paddy's itself or tune in during any other time of the year, I hope this day brings nothing but joy to you and yours, and that you enjoy this slightly super-sized episode as much as I do. (And that's after listening to it a million times during its arrangement, so that's saying something! ;D)This show is chock-full of fantastic music, made by some unbelievably skilled & gifted musicians! Some of this is work I've collected over many, many years (through places like myriad renaissance festivals, Thistle & Shamrock shows, and a good few Celtic festivals), while other pieces were acquired more recently; explicitly for play on this show. Celtic music has been a part of my heart for as long as I can remember, and I hope its soulfulness, passion and playfulness always will. :)Finding and playing the best of pod-safe Celtic music for you seems a superb way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day (musically speaking)- but for me, this music can make any day of the year an occasion. Plus, what a gift! I have found more phenomenal music in searching for pieces for this podcast than I can count! What a delight to've found sublime chanteuses like Maria Dunn, Beth Patterson and the ladies of Maidens IV!! And what a blessing to be able to share such personal favorites as The Rogues & Lothlorien, as well as a more recent favorite; the enthralling, enchanting power of Omnia! Each of these pieces hold their own magic and beauty, whether it be sweet & lilting or raucous and irreverent. And don't just relegate this lovely brand of tune-age to St. Paddy's! Celtic music goes beautifully at pubs, renaissance fairs, faerie-themed events, barn dances, and all kinds of events where merry-making is called for- even funerals on occasion- so keep it in mind the next time you go out with family & friends!Whether you're Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Manx or Scots-Irish (like yours truly), if you're English, German, Italian, Asian, Greek, Indian, American, Black Irish or French, may the luck of the Irish always be with you, and may you find your own pot of gold in pleasures big and small on this clover-filled, merrily-jigging day! (Just be careful with the Guinness, Harp Lager & Goldschläger, please! We want you around to celebrate the NEXT St. Paddy's, too! ;D)Now let me pick my fiddle back up again, and have a merry St. Pat's!! (Or whatever day you choose to celebrate it on. ;))Track List1. (Although other parts of the world still identify strongly with their Celtic roots, such as Caledonia in Spain, Newfoundland in Canada, Brittany in France, as well as much of the American south; especially those in and around the Appalachian & Rocky ountains.)Don't believe me? Listen to some of the folk music from these areas (including much of old as well as new American Country- from Bluegrass on), and see if you don't hear a Celtic lilt to many of fiddle tunes & melodies! It was a sad weekend as many of us bade farewell to Senator Edward Kennedy. He will be missed my so many. It was a beautiful send off though. I wrote a short piece for Facebook on the day after I heard the news about my own personal feelings about this giant of a man. It was truly one of the great honours of my life to be in the same room with a man who changed the world for the better. The Podcast of the show is up a little late this week but if you managed to catch the show on ICR I hope you enjoyed the music. For those of you who wait for the archive stream on JigTime or the podcast, then I think you are in for a treat. Music on the show from Colin Hay, Cara Dillon, Bela Fleck and more. Don't forget next week is Show number 50. So join me as I celebrate the music of my Facebook friends. So you can expect music from Ciaran Tourish, John Doyle, Pauline Scanlon, Sharon Shannon and many more.
