It seems like every day, a Private Client or subscriber to our newsletter asks me about El Salvador. I can't say I necessarily blame them; with everything Bukele has done, from turning around the violent crime situation to legalizing Bitcoin, there are plenty of reasons for expats to take an interest in the direction of this emerging Latin American country. But having not been to El Salvador myself for twenty-some-odd years, I decided to take a long weekend trip down there to meet up with a few business contacts and check out how things had progressed since I had last hitchhiked through it as a much younger man. This episode is my full report from the trip and my thoughts on El Salvador's potential for expats. TODAY'S EL SALVADOR TRIP REPORT: Hear about the good (I'm still thinking about the pupusas!), the bat (that's not a typo…), and the ugly of my hotel and Airbnb stays in El Salvador. Listen in for the inside scoop on some of the quite frankly terrible things I learned about El Salvador for expats, which mostly centers around the unfavourable tax situation. What about the visas? Tune in as I discuss all the available options for expats to live legally in El Salvador. Is Bukele really going to be giving out 5,000 “free passports,” as he proclaimed in a tweet? Hear what my El Salvadoran insiders had to say. How does the proposed $1 million “Freedom Visa” stack up to other regional citizenship-by-investment programs? Hear my thoughts on this pricey offer. What about company structures? I dissect whether El Salvador could be a viable option for forming offshore companies. How does El Salvador's banking system stack up to its neighbours? Discover what I learned about finance in the nation. Lastly, hear my final analysis of whether El Salvador could serve as a potential Plan-B destination for expats. DON'T MISS THIS YEAR'S EXPAT MONEY SUMMIT! Whether you're brand new to the expat world or fully along the way to crafting your Plan-B, the Expat Money Summit is a can't-miss event. This event is fully online from Oct. 7-11 and features experts on second passports and residencies, offshore wealth protection, international real estate, insights on geopolitics, and so much more. Eddie tells the story of how he met with fellow singer and Country entertainer Tjaye Martin after his good friend Kelvin Henderson england/bristol/somerset/8605867.stm ; www.alancackett.com had introduced her to Eddie, and how Eddie, via an agent friend, arranged for Tjaye to perform solo at the Sheraton Abu dhabi in 1989 for a season. Following this, Eddie and Tjaye performed as a duo at the Sheraton for a 5 year period playing in front of an International audience as well as some select people from the UAE. Eddie remembered well a certain Egyptian born army Colonal always immaculately dressed and present at one of the performences and made sure that Eddie was well supplied with several rounds of Jack Daniels, on one occasion,no less than 18 shots were provided for Eddie conveniantely situated at the bar of the Hotel. Artists performing at the Hotel were forbidden to sit at any guest tables and opted for the Hotel bar instead! On another occasion Eddie and Tjaye were bekonned to Sheik Muhamed's table, something that they'd normally not be allowed to do,but it was not protokol to turn down such an offer from a Sheik of course. The Sheik duly invited Eddie and Tjaye to perform at his Birthday party on their night off from playing the Sheraton, the address Liberty Tower Penthouse. There was a very wide door entrance to the Penthouse, on the dooor a Welcome Tjaye and Eddie notice, they were gariousciously received by the Sheik who was dressed in country and Western style clothing, 40 other invited guests were also present. The Sheik approached Eddie saying I think your favorite drink is Brandy? A full bottle was then provided to Eddie, and Jack Daniles bottle to Tjaye Martin. Just some of Eddie's recollections and stand out memories of seasons in the sun at the Sheraton. Eddie who had at one stage been the landlord of the Horseshoe Inn in Bath, had left the pub after a ten year stint, his wife Pat who remained great friends split up in the early 80's. Eddies rise to fame and musical popularity carried on when he started to write his own songs when in Colorado on a visit and meeting Arleen a 'very special lady' and became good friends with Eddie, he had written about 15 songs whilst in Colorado. Eddie goes on to tell several memorable stories of his ventures in the USA. Eddie and Tjaye embarked on a 4 week visit to the US playing and singing as they travelled around starting in New Orleans and driving to Arizona eventually clocking up 5,000 miles in their hire car. Visiting a ghost town named Stein, meeting and befriending Jerry Reed a well known Country and Western singer. https://en,mwikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Reed and once back in the UK, being invited by Jerry to perform at the renowned Jamborree in the Hill's,an American Country music institution. https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamboree_in_the_hills in front of an audience of circa 40,000 spectators. It dosent end there, Eddie tells the story of being invited onto the Marty Robin's TV show, Marty , an established songwriter and performer of country style music, was an acclaimed performer who had his own television show. Marty had big hits in the late 50's and early 60's with songs such as 'El Paso' and 'White Sport coat and a Pink Carnation' https://youtu.be/KAO7vs_Q9is; https://youtu.be/zD8MnvyAi61 Marty intended to record two of Eddie's self penned songs and invited Eddie to attend the recordings in Nashville, sadly Marty died shortly afterwards. Finally , Eddie recalled many great occasions and fun memories of his good friend Nigel Robinson once back in the UK. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bernie-aird/message

On Episode 117, I catch up with country singer-songwriter Tennessee Jet to talk about his excellent new album, The Country, due out Friday, September 04. As the title suggests, it's a sprawling ode to American music with road-weary ramblers, lonesome highway ballads, and rewarding pit stops on the superhighway we call American Country music. The Oklahoma songwriter is no stranger to life on the road and those memories, recollections, and thoughts are the genesis and genius behind The Country's raw beauty and harsh realities. During this interview, we talk about the writing of this album, the inspiration behind songs like the gorgeous album closer "Sparklin' Burnin' Fuse," his growth as a songwriter, reinterpreting songs like "Pancho & Lefty" & "She Talks to Angels," co-writing and collaborating with the likes of Cody Jinks, jazz bandleader Brian Newman (Lady Gaga), Paul Cauthen, & Elizabeth Cook, discovering Bob Dylan, protest songs, and why women songwriters & artists are leading the charge in country music with substance. This episode's presenting partner is Desert Door Texas Sotol. The small South American nation of Uruguay is best known for its grass-fed beef and Atlantic beaches. But the country of 3.5 million people has another distinction: It seems to have dodged the worst of the Covid-19 outbreak despite being nestled between hotspot countries. The country has seen just 1,000 or so cases since the pandemic began, and only 33 deaths. Ken Parks reports the reasons may have as much to do with its policies from years past, as its present day virus response.

Paraguay /ˈpær əˌgwaɪ/ in South America has ranked as the world's happiest country in the 2019 Global Emotions Report. The Global Emotions Report is a survey meant to track the emotional state of people worldwide. It gives country leaders insight into the well-being of the general populace that is not solely based on income and economic factors. The study was conducted by American analytics company Gallup, Inc. wherein researchers interviewed over 151,000 individuals from 143 countries. Participants were asked how they felt and what experiences they had the day before. The questions are based on Gallup's Positive and Negative Experience Indexes, which gauge the good and bad daily experiences of the participants. Paraguay scored 85 in Gallup's Positive Experience Index, making it the happiest country in the world. Joining Paraguay at the top of the list are Panama, Guatemala, Mexico, and El Salvador, which are all Latin American countries. The result comes despite records of violence and high levels of poverty in these countries. The report suggests that the happiest countries tend to focus more on the positive experiences in life. A Mexican psychologist confirms this, saying that family-centric Latin Americans use their families as inspiration to get through challenges. In contrast, Chad, an African country, got the highest Negative Experience score in the survey. Gallup explained that Chad's ranking was due to the political instability and displacement currently experienced by its people. Other conflict-ridden countries also had high negative scores. Researchers noted that worry and sadness, as well as anger and physical pain, might have led to this result.

Country radio is never far away from the news these days. Whether it's because of a lack of female artists or because a lot of the songs sound the same on there, social media is continually awash with chatter about it.The top 60 Country chart is particularly weird this week and James explores some of the oddities surrounding it and poses the question, ultimately, does anybody actually need Country radio anymore?

Brazil is a country where spectacular displays of wealth coexist with barefaced poverty, making it one of the most unequal nations in the Americas. In 2010 Alex Cuadros was hired by Bloomberg News to report on the rise of Brazilian billionaires, an elite group whose growing riches mirrored the ascendancy of their country as a global economic powerhouse. Cuadros will explain how many of these fortunes were made thanks to influence peddling and whether the recent well-publicized corruption scandals that rocked the country could be a signal of strengthening institutions. João Augusto de Castro Neves will offer his insights about the political and economic crisis engulfing Brazil. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
My guest today, on the Steve Jobs inspired Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who is moving forward into his future by keeping true to his past. Based in Waynesville Ohio, he is an American Country music artist, who has released a long list of chart topping hits in the world of traditional country music, and delights audiences across America with his brand of infectious honest to god country. And its with little surprise that he is travelling the highways and byways, as this is a passion that has been with him since the early days. As he says "I knew that music was what I wanted to do from an early age. We just were country people who loved country life. I remember in study hall, I would get out my guitar and we'd go pick and sing" But what makes this guy even more interesting, is he does all this whilst still being a farmer and barn designer/builder by trade. Yes he manages to to makes an honest, blue collar living at the same time as playing over 100 events/shows each year, all over the country. How he fits in the two I have no idea, but we will find out during the show. He credits much of that philosophy to the work ethic and morals that were instilled in him by his parents. He says “I grew up on a 110 acre farm. We always had plenty of livestock, horses, and cattle – plenty of chores and things to do. We didn't have a whole lot of money growing up, but we never went hungry or had any wants. I know what it's like to go through hard times, but by the same token, I wouldn't trade the way I was raised for nothing. It made me decide and realize that in life, you get what you put into it.” Along with his band he is certainly doing just that all over America. with music as he says that is "Country, the way country music was meant to be" So with a foot firmly planted in the worlds of Hank Williams, Hank Snow, and the Ryman Theatre legends, what does he think of the new style of country music being released today? And if he could go back in time and record with anyone, who would he choose? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Mr Richard Lynch
The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro have been tainted by protests, economic slowdown, and a massive political scandal. In this episode we take a look at Brazil's boom and bust as told through the prism of the country's elite. Alex Cuadros is the author of "Brazillionaires: Wealth, Power, Decadence, and Hope in an American Country." He tells how a commodities boom gave rise to larger-than-life Brazilian billionaires including mining mogul Eike Batista, soybean farmer-turned-senator Blairo Maggi, and beer-and-burger-king Jorge Paulo Lemann. He tells us why 'Brazillionaires' sometimes argue over their place on public wealth rankings, what happened when Batista's Porsche went missing, and how Brazil's billionaires favor dead bugs in their decorating.

I long ago came to the realization that there is no form of music that I don't like. There are artists (Rhianna) and songs (Brown-Eyed Girl) that, I quite frankly can't stand and would love to rid the world of. There are genres of music (Turkish chant, Yiddish folk, American Country) that I just don't "get" because they really don't speak to me and probably weren't meant to. It's not that I hate this music, it may annoy me at times, particularly when I'm in the mood for something else, but otherwise I have no real strong feelings about it whatsoever ... as a genre of music. I think my goal for the next few years is going to be to learn to love those few remaining genres of music. I've found all it takes is a little education. For example, being a middle-aged, middle-American, suburban dweller, until recently I had never been a really big fan of reggae. I was thoroughly convinced that there were only one recycled reggae song called "I Shot the Buffalo Soldier and Stood Up for My Rights." Surprisingly, it only took one hour listening to a Reggae show on a community radio station out of North Yorkshire, UK where a very knowledgeable and passionate disc jockey (Clearchannel take note) opened my eyes to the fact that reggae as a genre is as widespread and diverse as rock and roll, and some of it was absolutely killer. This led to a three week immersion through every list of reggae songs and artists I could find, discovering the likes of The Skatalites, Ijahman Levi, Buju Banton, U-Roy, Mutabaruka and a slew of others. If you have never immersed yourself in an unfamiliar musical genre with the help of a an expert guide in this manner, I highly recommed it. This week's guests, Indyca, are one of our few local "reggae-ish" groups. As with many great Indiana artists, their particular flavor of the genre is a musical crossroads, combining the loose backbeat of reggae and infuse it with elements of jam band, rock, dubstep, and even heavy metal at times. This diverse musical background, while seeming somewhat incongruous at first is brought together by a group of musicians who are equally versed in the technical side of their craft, but still have an excellent ear and open mind for what what works, what doesn't work, and how to push the edges of experimentation just a little in order to create something new and distinctly their own. Definitely looking forward to hearing how this translates in a studio environment. Indyca can be found here: | | All of this evening's tracks were recorded live at by Malcolm Johnson and can be obtained on their . Bassist Bryan Dougherty also plays in ... which is completely different. For people who aspire to be know-it-alls when it comes to music, I found this article which goes in to depth on "." It also turned me on to a lot of artists I didn't know. Indyca is proudly sponsored by and ... and loosely associated with ... not that we in any way condone mixing those three things. For those not overly knowledgeable about "the culture" ... I found this article which discuses "." Who says my show isn't educational?

CeltiSode 2010!Happy (Belated) St. Patrick's Day, Everyone!!First off, let me please humbly apologize for the HUGE delay that this episode has weathered. Thank you so much for your patience! I truly hope you find the show well worth the wait. :):) Whether you hear this on St. Paddy's itself or tune in during any other time of the year, I hope this day brings nothing but joy to you and yours, and that you enjoy this slightly super-sized episode as much as I do. (And that's after listening to it a million times during its arrangement, so that's saying something! ;D)This show is chock-full of fantastic music, made by some unbelievably skilled & gifted musicians! Some of this is work I've collected over many, many years (through places like myriad renaissance festivals, Thistle & Shamrock shows, and a good few Celtic festivals), while other pieces were acquired more recently; explicitly for play on this show. Celtic music has been a part of my heart for as long as I can remember, and I hope its soulfulness, passion and playfulness always will. :)Finding and playing the best of pod-safe Celtic music for you seems a superb way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day (musically speaking)- but for me, this music can make any day of the year an occasion. Plus, what a gift! I have found more phenomenal music in searching for pieces for this podcast than I can count! What a delight to've found sublime chanteuses like Maria Dunn, Beth Patterson and the ladies of Maidens IV!! And what a blessing to be able to share such personal favorites as The Rogues & Lothlorien, as well as a more recent favorite; the enthralling, enchanting power of Omnia! Each of these pieces hold their own magic and beauty, whether it be sweet & lilting or raucous and irreverent. And don't just relegate this lovely brand of tune-age to St. Paddy's! Celtic music goes beautifully at pubs, renaissance fairs, faerie-themed events, barn dances, and all kinds of events where merry-making is called for- even funerals on occasion- so keep it in mind the next time you go out with family & friends!Whether you're Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Manx or Scots-Irish (like yours truly), if you're English, German, Italian, Asian, Greek, Indian, American, Black Irish or French, may the luck of the Irish always be with you, and may you find your own pot of gold in pleasures big and small on this clover-filled, merrily-jigging day! (Just be careful with the Guinness, Harp Lager & Goldschläger, please! We want you around to celebrate the NEXT St. Paddy's, too! ;D)Now let me pick my fiddle back up again, and have a merry St. Pat's!! (Or whatever day you choose to celebrate it on. ;))Track List1. (Although other parts of the world still identify strongly with their Celtic roots, such as Caledonia in Spain, Newfoundland in Canada, Brittany in France, as well as much of the American south; especially those in and around the Appalachian & Rocky ountains.)Don't believe me? Listen to some of the folk music from these areas (including much of old as well as new American Country- from Bluegrass on), and see if you don't hear a Celtic lilt to many of fiddle tunes & melodies! The third annual American Country Awards program was a huge hit for the FOX network last month. The two-hour show from the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas saw Luke Bryan take home nine awards. Performances were packed into the show from co-hosts Trace Adkins and Kristin Chenoweth, plus tons of other hot country acts. Kelly Lynn headed out to the red carpet to chat with the artists before the big night.
On today’s Cooking Issues, Dave and Nastassia answer your e-mails and take calls from both sides of the Atlantic. Listen to learn the rich history of American country ham, the magical properties of sodium alginate, how to build your own vacuum pump, and the centrifugal secrets of Dave’s Banana Justino. This episode is brought to you by Edwards of Surry, Virginia. Image: American Country Ham from S. Wallace Edwards & Sons
Pat's!! (Or whatever day you choose to celebrate it on. ;))Track List:1. The great thing about being a journalist in Nashville is you get to meet so many talented people on their way to greater things. A strong character coupled with a good talent are always the final determinants in who succeeds over time. All-American country singer Ansel Brown comes straight out of Charlotte, North Carolina with both. Find out more in this CyberCountry Minute.
