In celebration of the Pogues' 'Fairytale of New York' EP, we take a detailed look at how their classic Christmas single came together. The Pogues originally formed in London in 1982 by Shane MacGowan, Spider Stacy and Jem Finer. MacGowan had gotten his start playing in the punk band, the Nipple Erectors, and when that band broke up, he began playing in an Irish traditional music style. Gradually, he brought in James Fearnley, Cait O'Riordan and John Hasler to become a sextet. Andrew Ranken replaced John Hasler as they signed with Stiff Records. Their debut album, Red Roses for Me, was released in 1984. For their second album, they added Philip Chevron on guitar and hired Elvis Costello as their producer. Rum Sodomy & the Lash was released in 1985, and they continued working with Costello for the Poguetry in Motion EP, released in 1986. At this point, Cait O'Riordan left the band and they updated the lineup to include Darryl Hunt and Terry Woods. They signed to Island Records and hired Steve Lillywhite to produce their third album. If I Should Fall from Grace with God was eventually released in 1988 and included the Christmas single, “Fairytale of New York.”  In this episode, Steve Lillywhite describes working with the Pogues at this pivotal time in their career when they were expanding the lineup and becoming more ambitious with their song structures and arrangements. Despite not having experience recording a traditional folk band, Lillywhite proved to be the right producer for the Pogues at this moment. His input and confidence in the studio led to them splicing two sections of “Fairytale of New York” together and also enlisting his wife Kirsty MacColl to sing the female part in the song. Jem Finer talks about his initial writing process for the song and how he wrote two potential Christmas ideas that his wife Marcia dismissed as being far too sentimental. Her input led to him rethinking the song and writing about a down on their luck couple, inspired by people who lived in their neighborhood in London. Finer describes how Shane MacGowan then took the song and moved the setting to New York City and added some key lines that were taken from real conversations. James Fearnley describes the thrill of recording the opening section with just piano and voice and how he practiced repeatedly to be able to get that part right. He talks about how the song deserved an ambitious string arrangement and so he worked out some ideas on a synthesizer before bringing in Fiachra Trench to help with the orchestration. By taking inspiration from film scores like Ennio Morricone's Once Upon a Time in America and Leonard Bernstein's On the Waterfront, Fearnley talks about wanting to bring a cinematic sound to match the classic American story that was being told. From the song's long gestation period of a few years, to Steve Lillywhite bringing the tapes home and casually asking Kirsty MacColl to sing on it, to the inspiration behind the classic “I could've been someone”  line, to the initial disappointment of getting to number 2 in the charts, to the perfect sparring duet partners in Shane and Kirsty, to the anti-Christmas Christmas song that has become timeless, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

An Open Letter to My Unionist NeighboursA Chairde,I want to respectfully reach out to my unionist neighbours at this time of ongoing change on our island and continuous turbulence and conflict in parts of our world. We should count our blessings. Imperfect though it might be we have peace and the ability to work out our difficulties peacefully. This ability to find solutions is frustrated by the British government refusing at this time to permit us to exercise our right to self-determination. So, London continues to interfere in our affairs. In my view, and history supports this view, London will never govern us in Irelands interest. It never has. And it never will. How could it? It serves different national interests.Sometimes these coincide with the attitudes of political unionism. But when they don't political unionism and its attitudes are set to one side by London. This has happened again and again. Betrayal has been followed by betrayal after betrayal. London is only loyal to the unionists when it suits its interests. Those are not my words. These are the words of unionist leaders. I do not think these leaders serve the interests of my unionist neighbours. Certainly not on social or economic issues or the daunting challenges of growing our peace process into a prosperity process. Or a new rights based citizen centred society. Of course, my unionist neighbours are entitled to vote for these parties or anyone else if that is their wish, and political unionism clearly has a deep rooted commitment to the Union with Britain. It used to have things its own way. Maybe some of its leaders still believe that is the case but it isn't. They have lost their electoral majority. The Union is now very conditional and in the upcoming period there will be a referendum to decide the future. The extent of constitutional and institutional change is for the people of the island of Ireland to decide – democratically and without outside interference. The Good Friday Agreement makes clear that constitutional change requires consent, freely given and expressed in referendums North and South. So, political unionism will have its say. But so will the rest of us. On the basis of equality. All the unionist parties have agreed to abide by the outcome of this referendum. This ongoing continuum of change is about shaping a new Ireland, an agreed Ireland, and a new relationship with Britain that enhances our personal and community relationships, strengthens society, makes conflict a memory, ends sectarianism and creates real opportunities to improve the daily lives of citizens. It is about reconciliation and accommodation. It is about the North as a part of the island of Ireland again taking its place as a full member in the European Union. The Good Friday Agreement will provide the best framework of protections for everyone including and especially my unionist neighbours. The Agreement which was democratically supported in referendums North and South and is an all-island international agreement, already provides future protection for citizens. The Agreement guarantees that future governance arrangements will be “exercised with rigorous impartiality on behalf of all the people in the diversity of their identities and traditions and shall be founded on the principles of full respect for, and equality of, civil, political, social and cultural rights, of freedom from discrimination for all citizens, and of parity of esteem and of just and equal treatment for the identity, ethos, and aspirations of both communities; recognise the birthright of all the people of Northern Ireland to identify themselves and be accepted as Irish or British, or both, as they may so choose, and accordingly confirm that their right to hold both British and Irish citizenship is accepted by both Governments and would not be affected by any future change in the status of Northern Ireland.”

In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by legendary producer Steve Lillywhite — the Grammy-winning studio mastermind behind iconic records by U2, The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, The Smiths, The Killers, Peter Gabriel, and many more. Steve talks about the release of a brand-new 4-track EP featuring a completely unreleased live version of "Fairytale of New York" — recorded at Glasgow Barrowlands in December 1987. This historic performance captures the first time The Pogues ever played the song live, and the first time Kirsty MacColl performed it onstage with the band. The EP is released on 12 December. Recorded by Steve himself — producer of the original version and then-husband of Kirsty MacColl — the Barrowlands tape offers a rare window into the early live life of what has become the UK's favourite Christmas song for over a decade. Originally charting at No. 2 in 1987, "Fairytale of New York" has returned to the UK Top 20 every year since 2005. Steve reflects on the making of the classic track, the energy of that unforgettable night in Glasgow, and key moments from across his remarkable career. O come all ye faithful and join the lads as they say pogue mahone to Christmas, with that most un-Christmassy of Christmas carols "Fairytale of New York." As they attempt (and fail) to find the true meaning of Christmas, the fellows examine the multi-year process that went into the making of this unlikely holiday classic, debate which Pogues album marked their peak, and examine the life and legacy of the late, great Shane MacGowan. Patrick Rieger sent pictures from PITTSBURGH: "Hi Marc, Thank you so much for so many years of the podcast, Marc, and the invitation to share pictures of Irish musicians we are enjoying this Summer. I look forward to each episode. My wife and play it in the car and at home. This is John McCann, on stage at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle Irish Pub in Pittsburgh, on July 15. John is a regular there, and my family, friends and I always enjoy his shows. John is helping to teach our 11 year old son how to properly clap along to what our late friend, Terry Griffith, described, in jest, as annoying Irish audience participation songs. Our son doesn't have the timing down yet but he is getting better. His favorite is Whiskey in the Jar. Casey Deely joined John on stage for a couple of songs that night. There are plenty more shows to go to before Summer ends, so if you want more photos just let me know. And if you ever find yourself in Pittsburgh, my wife and I will gladly introduce you to our favorite irish pub." Sophie Wildman - Gurung emailed: "Dear Marc, I thought I'd write as I've been listening to your podcast this afternoon as I tie up the first plants in my new garden in Somerset (UK) in holes kindly dug by my magical friend Bangles (Woodland Folk). It was Bangles who first introduced me to your podcast shortly after we first met last November. We met when I was then living in Wells and he was busking 'Troika' by Sergei Prokofiev which was the peice of music I had been looking for, to fit in with 'I believe in Father Christmas' by Greg Lake, that I had been working on. Since then we have been jamming together regularly (mainly folk), often at his spot in the woods, sometimes around the folk nights nearby, with him on his fiddle and me on folk harp (22 strings) and singing. You recently played a recording he'd sent in of some crows so I thought I'd send in one he did of me playing a verse from 'Longlife and Sucess to the Farmer' (quite appropriate for this time of year and my afternoons activities although as an advocate of 'no - dig gardening' I'm not a fan of ploughs,) accompanied by probably the same crows  -  warning us if there are walkers nearby. Maybe with a bit more practise we'll get 'I believed in Father Christmas' together to send you, fingers crossed in time for Christmas! Really enjoying your podcasts, thank you. I've been a fan of Celtic music as long as I can remember. My family is originally from Cornwall which may have something to do with it and obviously lots of music for lever harp (which I've been playing since I was 10) is Celtic. So long may the podcast continue, play on! Kind regards" Woodland Folk sent some pictures and wrote: "Heard bout Ur scifirish on band camp.... inspired... One of the first videos I saw online when I had a skylark(not a violin or fiddle but I respect it greatly for teaching me the tentative mechanics),an Irish man with a fiddle on his knee, looking into the camera said "it's love".... Wisdom many could learn from..." woodland folk sent another photo: "I feel I have been out of the loop, looking forward to making up for this by listening back to a few old faithful episodes (man of the house/2 hour fiddle episode and all...) and a few new ones on a 9 hour coach trip to moffat in Scotland,to see my son who is now a strapping, baritone 17 yrs..... Time is an odd thing.... I tentatively tryed a little Fahey in wells yesterday, though simple with few embellishments....in a way the simplest tunes are the hardest to play,Irish washerwoman or silver spear are deceptive and pretty...... I find Music the grandest analogy for life..."

1987 is a pretty bleak Christmas. The year is marked by disasters. The British economy is wrecked. It is a time when everyone could use some yuletide joy. Challenged by their producer, Elvis Costello, to write a Christmas hit, the Irish-Anglo punk band The Pogues believe they are the ones to provide some egg-nog infused nourishment to the people. Fairytale of New York is what founding member, Jem Finer, and lead singer, Shane MacGowan come up with which will eventually be considered a holiday hallmark - but despite its title, it is no traditional winter warmer. The song descends from nostalgia and euphoria to vitriol and melancholy in the space of four and a half minutes. Fairytale of New York will eventually be certified 4x Platinum in the UK. Christmas fans will go on proudly singing those stinging lyrics. And yet, years later a dark cloud settles over the song's legacy... Hosts from across the Pantheon network talk about holiday songs - good, bad, and sometimes very odd. One host finds "Wonderful Christmastime" triggering; another found a gem by Loretta Lynn called "To Heck With Old Santa Claus." "The Chanukah Song" also gets a deconstruction, as does "Christmas In Hollis" and "Fairytale Of New York" a rare down-on-your-luck Christmas song. Another surprise: A chestnut from Weird Al Yankovic.https://www.songfacts.com/https://www.facebook.com/songfactshttps://twitter.com/Songfactshttp://pantheonpodcasts.com/https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by  Corey O'Flanaganhttps://twitter.com/ofe1818https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/corey@songfacts.com Songfacts Podcast Spotify Playlisthttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IThMW5yB8XnFh5cS2gTxR?si=KAhiqWRcSIy5uxb2sZPFTA This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts.
