The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
In this thought-provoking "Pause to Ponder" episode of The Counter Narrative Podcast, Charles delves deep into the rich tapestry of Afro-Irish heritage, a journey sparked by his own mixed ancestry and the intriguing question: Is the term "Black Irish" rooted in reality or merely a myth? He embarks on a historical exploration, unraveling the origins and evolutions of this complex identity. From the legendary tales of the Spanish Armada to the vibrant stories of contemporary Afro-Irish figures like Phil Lynott, Paul McGrath, and Ruth Negga, this episode illuminates the contributions that have woven the intricate social and cultural fabric of Ireland today. Join me as I celebrate diversity, challenge perceptions, and uncover the nuanced stories of the Afro-Irish community, shedding light on a lesser-known aspect of Ireland's diverse identity. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thecounternarrative/support
Leon Diop & Brianna Fitzsimons: This landmark publication in Irish history is a celebration of Black Irish identity. Featuring profiles of Black Irish public figures from the worlds of pop culture, politics, sport, business & the arts.
Leon Diop and Briana Fitzsimons have got a new book Black & Irish, which is full of stories about incredible black Irish people. The pair joined Alison to share some great stories, where the book came from and how Briana made the choice to raise children in Ireland. For the full chat, press the play button on this page.
In Part 1 of "Black Paddywhackery", we learned about the origins of the Irish people, and asked why so many Americans self-identify as "Black Irish", believing themselves descended from survivors of the Spanish Armada which wrecked off the west coast of Ireland. Having shown the flaws in this folk history, in Part 2 of "Black Paddywhackery" we explore the true origins of those who call themselves "Black Irish".
A curious number of Southern Appalachians like to refer to themselves or extended family members as being "Black Irish". There are Facebook discussion groups catering to Appalachian Americans (with tens of thousands of members), and almost weekly an "expert" pops up assuring other members that the "Black Irish" are a thing, and that thing is usually this: "Loads of Irish people have black eyes, dark hair and skin. They come from Spanish sailors stranded on Irish coasts during the naval retreat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. These sailors intermarried with local Irish girls." This oft-repeated folk history - and the assertion that large sections of the native Irish population are dark in complexion due to this - is utter claptrap.
What is the experience of being black and Irish? And how does it differ from the white experience? A Town Hall organised by Black & Irish tomorrow aims to hear from people about their lived experience, and talk about the changes needed in Ireland to better the black experience. Andrea was joined by Briana Fitzsimons, Managing Director of Black & Irish, Leon Diop, Founder of the Black & Irish and Longford County Councillor Uruemu Adejinmi and listeners to discuss…

Join us at patreon.com/tortoiseshack In this Reboot Republic, Rory talks to Blessing Dada, about her story of child hood trauma, activism, racism and her ideas for allyship and vision for equality and community. Born and raised in Dublin, Blezzing is Black-Irish and a passionate activist for mental health awareness and a champion for social justice. She is an award-winning writer and SeeChange Ambassador. Blessing tells of growing up in Ireland, and the every day racism she experiences in Ireland including medical racism, being shouted at on a bus recently to 'go back to where you came from', but also how we need to adopt an intersectional approach to ensure solidarity includes all voices, and respond to the far right with conversations grounded in empathy and collective action to address housing, health, homelessness, education and inequality. It's a call for us all to have uncomfortable conversations, take action, join us on Saturday for the Gathering of Solidarity in Dublin, and continue after on a journey creating an inclusive equal Ireland.
On this episode we heard from Sonia, who along with her Kenyan born boyfriend is leaving Ireland because of the racism he's been subject to in the last six months. There was war over some of the horrible rhetoric we heard.

Xona was born in Lagos but calls Mullingar home, and has now made London his address. He tells the story of how he changed his name to his middle name Jordan, when he came as a ten year old, to Ireland, and started school. Then, he wanted to fit in and to be the same as all the other children but today, as a confident Black Irish performing artist, he has returned to using his birth name. Xona shares with love the story of how his mother, a single mum, made sacrifices, and worked hard, to create a better life for her children in Ireland.
