BJ, Verla and Steve welcomed in Jay Bernardo, the marketing director at Bezier Games and content creator at Cardboard East! BJ is a big fan of Jay's wonderfully eclectic and deep diving content about the Asian board gaming scene and it was a thrill to get him on the show. Before diving into some games, Jay talked about his journey in board gaming and how the Cardboard East channel came to be. We get some inside gumbo scoop about the Tokyo Game Market and the Korean Board Gaming scene! Next up, it was time to talk about some spicy hot games: Last Penguin Seers Catalog Bonsai and some bonus lagniappe — Rebel Princess strategy! Lastly, it was time for the ENVIE game. Last week, they figured out Logan's game pretty quickly. Can they make it two successful ENVIE games in a row?! Make sure you check out www.youtube.com/cardboardeast — like and subscribe to Jay's excellent channel! Don't forget -- tickets are still on sale for Southern Board Game Fest 2025 in Lafayette, Louisiana the weekend of March 29: www.southerngamefest.com Come join the Krewe and play some games -- you might even see some special Gumbo guests there! Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Please join us on the Boardgames To Go discord server where you can chat online with other podcast listeners. Opener: Hammer of the Scots Ken Tidwell @Ken Tidwell If you entered the hobby as I did pre-2000, you didn't have BGG, podcasts, YouTube, or even a good way to buy games online. You often didn't have English rules in the box for what games you had in your small collection. But what you did have is The Game Cabinet. This was probably the very first boardgame website that ever existed. It was created by Silicon Valley boardgamer Ken Tidwell, who was at the leading edge of the hobby and the Internet. Thanks to Ken's website we had our first access to game reviews, letters columns, information about where to buy games, and online versions of Mike Siggins' famous boardgame zine, Sumo (fullname Sumo's Karaoke Club). I cannot properly convey how important and influential this website was to those of us getting started. Although it was a website, it was presented as an online magazine with numerous "issues" as it was periodically updated with a batch of fresh content. Its last issue was published in 2000. But it's still online! Go visit it at gamecabinet.com. As an oldtimer myself, I've wanted to get Ken on my podcast for many years. Finally I managed to do it. I was delighted and surprised to have Ken tell the story of The Game Cabinet...but it turned out not to be a story stuck in the past. We definitely spend a good chunk of time talking about those early days, but when Ken disappeared online over two decades ago he didn't stop playing games. Not only that, he maintained his fascination with the leading edge of creativity in game design. In a nutshell, he's no curmudgeon like me! He's still got an enormous collection, goes to conventions, plays lots of games, is fascinated with the innovations of the Tokyo Game Market...and even Kickstarter. He's on a number of Discord servers and stays plugged in. He's even up on the indie RPG world that I keep hearing about, too. Closer: Considering what's most important to me in this hobby for 2024...and practicing it in the last quarter of 2023 -Mark
We just returned from a whirlwind two-week visit to Japan, and visions of fantastic food and strange (to us) board games still swirl around in our head. What is the board game scene there like? What was it like shopping for games whose titles and descriptions we couldn't read, but whose art was so, so pretty? We teamed up with Monique and Naveen of Before You Play, who happened to tour Japan at the same time we did, to relive our amazing adventures. Timeline: 3:54 - Naveen's game pick: Let's Go! To Japan. 9:48 - Monique's game pick: Hanamikoji. 15:11 - Christina's game pick: Rumble Nation. 19:03 - Christina's topic: attending the Tokyo Game Market. 34:58 - Naveen's topic: Japanese vs. Western board games. 46:56 - Monique's topic: Japanese-themed games -- just how accurately thematic are they?

Important Macross news! Mark will ruthlessly exploit any and all chances to mention Macross, and so he shoehorns in a quote from a Macross property so he can talk about Macross. He can then mention his mention of Macross in the episode description, in a move called Meta-cross. Perhaps it would be inevitable that there would be juvenile comments about the components in Catan: Starfarers. This is, after all, the gaming series that brought us endless unfunny remarks about wood and sheep. Perhaps the sculptors for the pieces knew what they were doing and, in turn, laughing at us. I suppose we must be thankful that Klaus Teuber remained high-minded--one shudders to imagine what the satirical outlook of, say, Vlaada Chvatil would have done with the same material.Games Played Last Week: -Street Masters: Aftershock 2m18s (Adam & Brady Sadler, Blacklist Games, 2019)-Big City: 20th Anniversary Jumbo Edition! 4m51s (Franz-Benno Delonge, Mercury Games, 2019)-Wavelength 7m46s (Alex Hague, Justin Vickers, & Wolfgang Warsch, Palm Court, 2019)-Warfighter: The Private Military Contractor Card Game 10m32s (Dan Verssen, DVG Games, 2019)-The Shipwreck Arcana 15m42s (Kevin Bishop, Meromorph Games, 2017)-Yggdrasil Chronicles 17m26s (Cédric Lefebvre, Ludonaute, 2019)News (and why it doesn't matter):-Tokyo Game Market 21m39s-Matagot Makes Pronoun Progress 22m00s-Spycon (Where Everyone Is a Spy) 23m46s-Warhammer Underworlds Digital 24m33s-Airship City in English 26m00s-Expanding Spheres of Influence 27m00s-Flotilla 29m07sFeature Game: Catan: Starfarers 30m08s (Klaus Teuber, KOSMOS, 2019)
